I was definitely going to buy Basic until I saw that it’s not waterproof! It’s difficult here in the UK with constant rains, can’t read in bath or on the beach. So, got new paper white instead!
Great review, absolutely agree. I lost my Paperwhite earlier this year and replaced it with the basic due to cost. Glad I did as I like the basic better. I love the form factor of the basic and I find the fonts a lot crisper than the Paperwhite. The only thing I wish (which is minor) was that the basic was waterproof like the paperwhite.
I'm still using my old basic Gen 4 Kindle from 2011. It is annoying that it doesn't link to the Kindle Store anymore, though. The micro usb is mildly annoying, and the battery life is good but nowhere near a newer Kindle. I'm considering upgrading, but I'm afraid I'll miss the clicky physical buttons too much.
I think the paperwhite is worth it because of 2 things - the warm light (essential for night reading) and the page turn animations. That makes a big difference for me.
I love your videos! Found your channel when I was looking to buy a Kindle. Got the new Kindle Paperwhite Signature and I LOVE IT! But for my kids I'm planning to get the Kindle 11, for all the good reasons you just mentioned. Thank you for high quality videos, I enjoyed them very much!
Great video. I have gone from the 2020 Oasis to the 2022 Kindle basic. Love the new form factor (the size in particular). Thankfully I was able to gift my Kindle to my daughter who was about to buy one. I want to stay with that 6" size and that weight.
I have the new Basic and the Paperwhite. I started the previous year with the old basic and while I loved it, the dpi was okay, after a while my eyes started getting tired. I then bought the 2018 paperwhite and loved it. But the new basic and the current Paperwhite are great. I am a Kindle enthusiast and while I really only need one, it doesn't hurt to have a backup. But like you said, the basic base Kindle is really all most people need. I'd be perfectly okay with just the base model. I don't use the amber night time mode on the Paperwhite and as far as waterproofing goes, well I have gotten a few raindrops on the basic Kindle and it was just fine. I actually think that the text looks slightly sharper on the basic Kindle since there is no layer of glass distorting the text.
Isn't it a bit schizophrenic? "I have the new Basic and the Paperwhite. I started the previous year with the old basic and while I loved it, the dpi was okay, after a while my eyes started getting tired. I then bought the 2018 paperwhite and loved it. @@retkvi One of the reasons I decided to try the Kindle eReader was because reading on a tablet made my eyes seem more tired after reading awhile. The previous basic Kindle helped but the dpi was 186 (or close to that) so it helped, but the new basic Kindle and the Paperwhite have 300 dpi and the text is clearer and less strain on the eyes when reading. If you have great vision then having a lower dpi may not bother you.
@@hokey-os3rx Recently i bought my first ereader the kindle paperwhite 2 and its ok, dont know if it is to heavy on my eyes, Im shortsighted and troughout the time it gets wors slightly, but I dont see any pixelation at all, perhaps the 300dpi would be much crispier, but also this resolution is sufficient for my needs. Only thing that I should sort out is the light, more natural for my eyes is light that comes on to the screen not from it, so I would preffer a good lamp. And I noticed in pitch black when the backlighting is turned to zero, it still is backlit, not much but it can be seen. Perhaps I would go after this one for the 2022 basic model, I dont get that flush screen from the latest paperwhites, it doesnt seem so natural, but it is a bigger screen and waterproof, so thats a thing to consider.

Best review of the Kindle Basic, or any device, I've seen recently. Concise, articulate, relevant information for everyday users, and very nicely filmed. New subscriber to your channel. Thanks Steven!
I loved everything about it because I purchased Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition | 32 GB with a 6.8" display in January 2022. Sadly, yesterday, my Kindle screen froze and showed a low battery. Nothing works; hard reset, recharging, changing charging cables and all. Had a chat with Amazon customer support, and apparently, it's a hardware fault, and I was offered 15% off to purchase a new device. The offer is valid for purchasing any model from Amazon. I decided to go with this Kindle 2022 11th Gen release. I don't want to spend extra on Kindle Paperwhite, so I will keep things basic and simple with this model.
Just a note: on Kindles the light is not going at your face. The leds are lighting from the sides of bezel and special layer is bending the light onto the screen, not your face. In essence, it's the same as you using the lamp.
I just bought a Basic to replace my dead Voyager and couldn’t be more pleased! I like the side and I never used the page turning buttons anyway. I did add a case to get the screen off function more easy. Brilliant! Thanks for the concise review!
Love your lighting. My kindle paperwhite would be coming today. I had the baseline one for 3 years now. So excited for the new device. Still difficult to explain to my wife why do I need new one when I already have one.
Thanks for this (very concise) review! My older version PW is on its last legs so I'm tossing up which model to get next. I'm really glad I came across your video as I don't really care about the warm light feature and the base model seems to have a better screen resolution than the model I have now for way less money than the new PW. Much appreciated :)
The paper white signature is an excellent upgrade. Warm backlight, auto adjust, and wireless charging (for those rare occasions when you actually need to charge). I upgraded from the paper white from a couple years back to the current one and my only drawback is the slightly increased size doesn't fit my Hand as well. Though, I had my last one for 3+ years and likely its just a "ill get more familiar with this one in time".
I have the Paperwhite Signature and just bought the Basic. I use the Basic way more because of the form factor. The only thing I don’t like is that stuff gets stuck under the bezel in the Basic.
In 2021 I got the 8gb paperwhite kids during prime day. Main reasons were free case, waterproof, usbc, warm light, and no ads. Paperwhite still has a larger screen so less page flips. I won't upgrade or downgrade until this thing breaks. Happy to see the basic has usbc now!
I’m coming from the base kindle 7th gen and decided to go with the paperwhite. The lights are pretty important to me because I’m doing most of my reading at night when my partner is asleep, I don’t want to bother them but I don’t want a blaring blue light in my face while I’m winding down either. I also really wanted the water resistance of the paperwhite because I’m outside a lot, I take a lot of baths, etc. It was a super close call, it took a lot to justify the price difference for two features but in the end (after much coaxing from my partner) I decided I wanted the one that was a better fit for my life.
I love me Kindle Paperwhite, I prefer the larger screen due to sight and there for less page turning, I also think the warm light is a great feature. I’ve seen that the Paperwhite is faster so… there you go. Have a great year.
I have the previous basic edition and the new paper white edition. My issue is the amount of scratches the paperwhite screen has gained over the 5 months that I have had it. It is a purchase I regret. I attempted to use a screen protector but it degrades the crispness of the words. Because of this I have reverted to my old faithful basic. If I have to upgrade again I will purchase the new basic. And I'm not sure why I have not been seeing complaints about this issue.

This basically made my decision easy. My voyage broke and this seems like the most reasonable one to replace it. Thank you for an informative video that wasn’t 20 minutes long!!
I got the 10th gen (upgrading from my 6th gen) and the store called me saying it was out of stock and as the mistake was theirs they would send me an 11th gen! I'm now checking videos about it, and yeah, I'm pretty happy with the (unintentional) change, lol.
Great review. Love my Basic. It’s excellent. I really have no regrets and it’s become my preferred reading device. I hate to admit it but it’s even more enjoyable to read than paper.
You have the OLD/PREVIOUS generation of the Paperwhite. The 2021 Paperwhite has USB C and smaller bezzles. The Kindle that you bought/upgraded was the 2022 updated Kindle Basic.
Thanks, Steve! Now I’m almost glad I lost my paperwhite 😂 Thinking of which one to get next. Weight is super important and that page update speed was quite annoying. I do read in bed a lot though so was thinking of paperwhite with the warm light. However, the one you picked seems like a very reasonable option. I didn’t know it existed!
I converted to the basic model after having to exchange my paper white 3x and I’ve never looked back. I actually prefer the plasticy feel rather than that rubberized feel from the paper white. It’s small but oh so powerful!!!
I wish I had considered the weight aspect when I went for the new Paperwhite. It's too heavy, too big, the screen is reflective and is a fingerprint magnet. I'm getting rid of it and getting this base model.
I have recently done exactly the same thing. Moved from Kindle PW 2018 to latest base Kindle. All the same reasons too. USB-C, thinner bezels, lighter, much more responsive. I also think it is slightly clearer to read due to the lack of additional glass panel that created the flush display on the PW.
@@alessandrosoliman48 Hi. I would go for the newer base model for all the reasons that I mentioned in my earlier comment. USB-C charging, smaller, lighter, thinner bezels, more responsive etc
I’d like to buy one (kindle) but I’m not sure between the paper white and this one ….I don’t have much money 💰 but still I want a good product that also allows me to connect to Goodreads and let me read even at night I’m worried about two things: the size And the fact that the screen is not flat what do you think?
I love the size because I want the smallest and lightest device possible. The screen not being flat isn’t ideal but hasn’t bothered me. Currently charging through Prescott’s complete works and this device is holding up nicely.
Really comes down to if your going to read in *dim* light than the basic is fine. But to read in the actual dark, for me the PW's warm dimming function is essential.
I upgraded to paperwhite. 4 LED’s vs 17 LED’s is a big difference in reading. Plus I found the indent on the base Kindle’s screens the flat edge to edge much more comfortable. True. The base is lighter. And as I get older I need larger print. So less page turns if I have a larger kindle screen
The only cons are a lack of Warm Light and waterproofing. They're the only reasons why I ended up going for the latest Kindle Paperwhite, otherwise, this represents great value for money.
I still use my kindle voyage which I think is the best version they've ever come out with. The page advance buttons are amazing and have a great feel. I don't mind the mini usb because all my hunting gear electronics like my dog's GPS collar still use it.
Do these all have adverts or are some without them? Is it a pain or not something that bothers? Is there a price difference for with and without ads? Thanks for the review :)
Why would you prefer light from outside over light from the screen. That's super weird bro.The nice thing about light from the screen is that you can lay in bed with the brightness set 1 to 5% and read in the dark. Also Kobo Libra masterrace
And I think that's the point of the Paperwhite. At least that I know off that has light. Not sure if the basic one has itz too. But having light is a good thing
Great video, totally agree with you, Kindles don't need big 20 minutes-long reviews. I think people usually give more a overview of all feattures tham a propper review. That said, thanks for your thoughs, i agreed with mostly, if not all. But i find really interesting how a very especific featture can make one make a choice between this or papperwhite. I have a 8gen Kindle, tha basic on one without the 300ppi resolution and backlight. I used to read a lot in my, but as the years passed i was dropping because a lot of ebooks (here in Brazil) cost the same as the physical copy and because the kindle is so little and have no protection to accidental touches on screen, it bothered me a lot. So i found my hand is too big to it and, as my day was becoming busier, more i craved for the backlight because i simply don't have where put a reading lamp at home. So i finaly decided to change. And looking into several reviews i discovery that papperwhite has a featture that prevent you to turn pages acidentaly. So i coud actually touch the screen, givin me a better ergonomy. I also like the bezels for the exacly same reason. If the kindle have big bazzels, i can have better ergonomy for my hand. I also like bigger screens so, to me, a papperwhite wil be a win, even i'm being with you on the fact mostly ppl really don't need anything beyond basic 11gen kindle. So, to help people in the coments, take a look into the especific feattures, because, mostly them don't make difference for mostly ppl. But sometimes, a very simple featture can change your experience a lot, for better
does the kindle 11 have a folder system? like can i save notes to a folder? and if yes, can i do a folder inside a folder? like on windows folder system
Using a 2017 model. Until know it has worked fine. Has fallen so many times and works fine. I don't use it with any kind of case and the plastic resit the hits. Love the kindle, I read books abd many times fall asleep with it just to find it at the morning under my bed 😂😂😂😂😂
It's been solid for me. I've been reading a couple hours a day for the past too weeks and only used 30%. Could probably get a month out of this no problem with my reading habits.
Thank you for this production. I own the Voyage* model, which is perfectly sized. I would love to see a new version of that device* with it being water resistant and featuring a USB-C charging port. As feedback for you, I would prefer you leaving in the natural pauses between your sentences, even if this is against the latest TH-cam creators trend and adding a few additional seconds to your uploads.
Only thing that makes me mad about these is I want one, but they are just as much or more expensive than the full blown HD Fire Tablets that can actually do things and have HD displays and etc. this basically has a calculator display and stupid pricey for what it is.
That base model is basically the 2015 Paperwhite (except for the USB-C and thinner bezels)….Ok , so, really just the Display. New Paperwhite is great though…except being a tad bit more reflective. However, I hear the text looks a bit better on the base model, since it’s missing the top glass layer.
This model should have bluetooth for audiobooks as near as I can determine. My 7th gen paperwhite and earlier certainly does not. please chime in if it does not,

I still use my kindle voyage which I think is the best version they've ever come out with. The page advance buttons are amazing and have a great feel. I don't mind the mini usb because all my hunting gear electronics like my dog's GPS collar still use it.
Kindles can now read EPUB files without needing to be converted into any other type of file.
wow no size comparison?
For scanned pdf copies of books , which kindle would be a better choice?
By better i mean less scrolling while reading.
Do these all have adverts or are some without them? Is it a pain or not something that bothers? Is there a price difference for with and without ads? Thanks for the review :)
Kindle e-readers don't have "back light" only front light.
I have the latest SE Paperwhite. My new Kindle 11 just came in. Will update soon!
My conclusion is, you gotta just try it out and see what size you like. It’s all purely personal preference
@@MoneyR236 which one do you prefer and why if you don't mind?
Thoughts after a year? @@MoneyR236
Great video and no background music playing yahoo!! You remind me so much of David Bromstad! You could be brothers.
Thank you! This helped me make the decision I’ve been fighting back and forth about!
I just put a new battery in my original kindle that has the keyboard on the bottom. I think version 1 to 3 it is. Not sure anymore
Does this kindle have access to goodreads?
Does this kindle 11 supports all book formats as kindle paperwhite?
One of the best comments I’ve received all year. Thank you!
Hey Steven, thanks for the review. BTW - great sound :) Boom mic or lavalier?
Nooo you can send epub in this model!! Amazon is trying to leave behing the mobi format
Good review on the Kindle. Your outerwear also caught my attention. Would you mind letting me know where you got it?😂

Thank you for the video. I have Pocketbook Touch HD 3 and I am thinking to upgrade to Kindle Paperwhite SE.
Does it support epub or not? I'm confused. What about mobi?
What mic do you use cos it’s damn good
I love to use Calibre to transfer and format ebooks for my kindle. It feels like old school iTunes.
does the kindle 11 have a folder system? like can i save notes to a folder? and if yes, can i do a folder inside a folder? like on windows folder system
Im thinking about upgrading from a 10th gen to a 11th is it worth it?
Just for the USB-C alone!
Thanks for letting us know about standard books website
I was in conflict between this or oasis and I picked the standard kindle as the osis has features I don’t need
Loved my oasis but basic kindle is the right size and weight, thanks for the concise video
Awesome video brother. ❤
Where did you get that denim shirt? I need it lol

@@_stevenfoster thanks! Price is insane though haha
Using a 2017 model. Until know it has worked fine. Has fallen so many times and works fine. I don't use it with any kind of case and the plastic resit the hits.
Love the kindle, I read books abd many times fall asleep with it just to find it at the morning under my bed 😂😂😂😂😂
can I put pdfs from my laptop to kindle?
Why do they call it Paperwhite when the background defaults to an irritating yellow?
Maybe to simulate a really old book
@@lbgstzockt8493 Does a really old book have yellow light that shines in your eyes?
Yepp. It should be Kidney Paperyellow! 😀
Great video! Do you still go with no cover? Is the screen scratch resistant? That would be my only fear.
If I'm throwing it in my backpack I use an old iPad mini sleeve that mostly fits. Otherwise it's on my desk or bedside and no case is needed.
Kindles aren't backlit. They use front lighting to keep strain from your eyes.... just saying.
Does anyone know if the backlight can be turned off in the Kindle basic? I worry that it might be too bright when reading in the dark.
It can be minimixed in the setting.
What do you think about the battery life? I have seen a lot of different answers. Keep up the good work❤️
It's been solid for me. I've been reading a couple hours a day for the past too weeks and only used 30%. Could probably get a month out of this no problem with my reading habits.
Can you turn the backlight completely off?
Yes.
@@_stevenfoster 👍
Thank you for this production. I own the Voyage* model, which is perfectly sized. I would love to see a new version of that device* with it being water resistant and featuring a USB-C charging port. As feedback for you, I would prefer you leaving in the natural pauses between your sentences, even if this is against the latest TH-cam creators trend and adding a few additional seconds to your uploads.
Great video, keep going. To the point
Only thing that makes me mad about these is I want one, but they are just as much or more expensive than the full blown HD Fire Tablets that can actually do things and have HD displays and etc. this basically has a calculator display and stupid pricey for what it is.
I like your vibe amigo.
Iread it does support epub using the email send
I have the pw and the basic and I think I like the basic more, except for when I read manga
My 7th gen paperwhite and earlier certainly does not. please chime in if it does not,
@@geraldhenrickson7472 No... you're right. I forgot about that...mostly b/c I don't use it.
New paperwhite is the GOAT
Hooray for choices! I prefer the ppi quality of the Paperwhite over the Basic. My eyes can really tell the difference.
I'm loving minds can't put it down
I like my 2018 paper white
