Horse of the Year Zenyatta was purchased at auction for 60k and ended up winning over 7 million at the track and to this day is the only filly to win the Breeders Classic against the males. She was 19 for 20 and also won the Ladies Breeders division the year before making her the only horse to win two different Breeders cup races.
He died a few years ago. His handlers said he was a wonderful horse who was a pleasure to be around. They said he would be greatly missed So at least someone loved him..
Then some horse in 2013 nobody wanted was bought back for a “mere” $300,000 and later became a Triple Crown winner (American Pharoah)...you just never know with these horses :)

He's so beautiful l don't wanna sound rude but for all the people hating at this horse cause he's bad at racing, do you even care how the horse is feeling? He's a beautiful stud And a real horse lover doesn't care about money, love is not for sale, and friendship either. He's a beautiful horse, l really like him, 16m is a lot, but l think, even not all the money in the world... can buy a horsemanship or love or friendship.
Marit unfortunately the racing industry sees horses as a business tool and nothing more. I agree that he is beautiful but in their eyes if he is a dud on the track then bung him in stud. He did foal two good racehorses though so can't fault him there
Marit He's beautiful but that's about it. He's a dud as a stud and will never produce what he sold for. This was a competition between two people that dislike each other. This 16 million was a joke!
People get hung up on the race track appeal, but look at the hang time in that boy's hocks! Beautiful smooth, short, elastic top line, with flat knees and animation up front all at once. He's a moving fool if ya ask me. And he's chromed up to boot! He could be trained in dressage, nice hunt seat equitation, and more I'm certain. Plus, the mark of a good stud is if he out sire's himself!! I know a few quarter horses (My neck of the woods) like Reminic, Impressive (which I own a granddaughter of) and Sir Colonel that always out produced themselves, and that's what brings the mares and money around. Plus, for instance, Reminic was nothin to look at, even homely, and made killer working horses that were beautiful on top of it!
Northern Dancer: 18-14-2-2, defeated by Quadrangle and Roman Brother in the Belmont Stakes (1964) after he won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. He is the father of Nijinsky, the last British Triple Crowned (1970) and grand grand sire of the mare Treve, winner in the Prix de L'Arc de triumphe 2013-2014.
I agree. The supernatural miracle of the perfect horse will NEVER happen again. Secretariat is in a league of his own. You can't repeat perfection. You just never expect that it could exist. To me...he is the greatest creature that ever lived. No human can come close to the perfect "10". Secretariat is beyond words...And he is still the most beautiful horse I have ever seen.
I wonder if they started testing these horses? I worked a sale in the early 1990s, the standardbred sale, and I remember the yearlings were rippling with muscles. It was a common practice to inject them with steroids and give them more weight, incredible muscle mass for that age, and when the coat was shiny, they looked amazing. They look much older than they were. I would hope that they don't do that anymore. It's not that it hurts the horse, and the funny part is if every horse is going through the same thing, it's not really giving you an advantage, it is only making the playing field equal. But if none of them did it, it would be just as good, and people would be seeing what they are really getting. They must've change this by now but I don't know it's been a lot of years
@MsFlowP He actually was a failure on the racetrack. He raced three times, came in third once and fourth twice. He was plagued by injuries and never ran as well on the track as he did at the time of this sale. He is currently standing stud at Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds in Ocala, FL. His stud fee is only $5,000. Despite the fact that he was a failed racehorse and is clearly not worth much as a sire - that fee is very low for a TB stallion - he will likely never be at risk of slaughter.
Such a shame he was a failure on the track- then again, I always love it when the horses that cost less win. Still, beautiful horse. I hope he can sire good racers.
he was purchased by Coolmore Stud, and is probably one of their biggest regrets, as he only started 3 times in his "career" and was retired after failing to hit the board in his third start. He stands at stud now in Ocala for $5,000 per foal.
16 million for a horse that never won a race and whos foals are pretty damn useless. Getting a horse with secretariat and other fancy horses bloodlines isnt difficult, we have an ex racer who we dont know much about her racing career, she always came 2nd and when i researched her it turned out she had descended from Northern dancer!
Well DUH! Horses do NOT come with a guarantee! They are not machines. A lot of things have to come together to get a winner.....THAT is why there is only one in each race, or championship. So take the risk, or not.
I remember my boss back 25 years ago, he was at a dairy barn that had a cow giving birth to a Holstein cow, if the calf was a bull, it was already sold for $250,000!
Most modern thoroughbreds have Northern Dancer in their pedigrees. Rare to find a horse without Northern Dancer in their blood. Because of Storm Cat and AP Indy, Secretariat is in a lot of pedigrees too.
Interesting to read that Secretariat had a larger than normal heart- a freakishly fast greyhound, the Irish Mick the Miller also on his death was found to have a much larger than usual heart. The English National winner steeplechaser Red Rum who won three times- his heart size was unknown- but a big heart has to help [in all senses of the word!]
Pssssh, thank you for your uplifting views of the world. Sweetie MOST thoroughbreds with good lines (race horses) go on to compete in other sports, like eventing, cross country, or even Polo. It is very rare that a young off the track horse is slaughtered.
It doesn't matter if this horse isn't the fastest. This horses build is one of a kind and what you should base your horse buying when buying a thoroughbred. My dad showed them.
Amen to that. Not all racing bred horses are face material. A friend of mine has a daughter of Red Light Green Light (quarter horse) that is way too tied in at the shoulders and couldn't hold her head high of she wanted to. Despite being slow, that thing can turn on a dime. She's 14 hands of good attitude, so a ten year old does playdays and showed Tiki, the mare, at the county fair the last couple years. Tiki is far from the winner's circle, but she's still a good horse.
That was a crazy pissing match between Shiekh Mohammed's people and Coolmore. Still mindboggling to this day. Thanks so much for sharing all these awesome videos of yours! They are all fun to watch. Are you going to have some videos of the Fasig-Tipton sale tomorrow? I can't wait to see how much Stardom Bound will go for.
Some horses just need the love and companionship to fulfill there true potential, only certain trainer's are as just worthy to gain a horses confidence and respect and to to reach the qualities that a trainer so much admirers and aspires for the horse to reach. Rip Vincent O'Brien there will never be a trainer on this god giving earth that will ever be able to get inside a horse's head, as pleasant and gracious as you so much where you were miles ahead of everyone and anyone when it came to spotting the horses very known qualities, and the reason why ireland are held in high esteem. Thank you.
So i guess they just need another $15,989,560.00 to get their money back after retiring after losing all 3 career starts. (total winnings $10,440) Currently at stud $5000 fee.
Fungus does not bring down a price by a zero. Fungus does not reduce a yearling from 600k to 60k. You don't know what you're talking about. They got lucky on the purchase of a lifetime; God bless her, I hope she produces a winner someday. Maybe this in utero MdO will be the one.
julie hertz funny my horse, sugar , is not a racer but she jumps. she is a little appaloosa mare and can jump 6 ft. I bout her for 100 bucks and we have won nothing but the blue ribbons
Your little appy mare can jump 6ft? Hmmm. The tallest jumps at the Olympics, the Grand National and Grand Prix jumping are 5'3". If Sugar can top 6ft I would think you could sell her for a fortune to the Grand Prix group.
Yeah no she is like 15 hands and I would never sell my little baby I have never jumped 6 feet on her but I have seen her do it she is better than the other two warm bloods we have
@gilliangirl1 I think you'd also be surprised to learn that standardbreds are very common in slaughterhouses - they are often sold to the Amish, who drop them off at kill auctions when they go lame or become ill. The AQHA is notoriously pro-slaughter as are many of its members, and as it is the breed registry with the largest number of registered horses per year by a large margin over the Jockey Club, I wonder how many of their culls wind up in slaughterhouses?
Yeah I took a look inside the quarterhorse journal once & was stunned by the number of 11, 12, 13 year olds that died. Something wrong there for sure...
@gilliangirl1 Ferdinand is the exception, not the rule. He was sent to stud in Japan and when he became unpopular, the Japanese attempted to place him in a riding club. When that failed, they sold him to slaughter without contacting his former owners first. I think you'd be shocked to find out how many OTTBs actually DON'T go to slaughter. I think you'd be surprised to learn that there are a number of racetracks in the US that outright ban trainers that sell horses for slaughter.
Nice looking horse. But, If that was me having 16 million, I'd rather build a stable and wide area of land, buy some decent breeds and hire people to breed them for me :))
Do people actually realize that Secretariat is a kind of his own... he actually had lungs larger than and average horse's which is what allowed him to be so extraordinary...
i hate how the 2 or 3 people that were bidding on the horse probly didnt even want it but once they hit 7 million they kapt going just to see who would give up first
It isn't about the horses physic (it should be) buyers are more interested in there pedigree but sometimes it doesn't matter how good of a physic or pedigree it has what matters the most is if it wants to try as a racehorse, if it doesn't have any interest in racing well that's what can happen unfortunately.
Exactly, I ride a thoroughbred who has a beautiful pedigree, and was worth so much, but when they got him out on a race track he was crap. The pedigree doesn't mean they are good. The thoroughbred I ride, despite his pedigree, works as a school horse!
Thomas Milliken I've never understood the obsession people have with pedigree myself. I knew someone who used to to own racehorses, he has since passed on but he was always said that the horse's build was more important than the pedigree, as he put it '"papers don't make champions". He owned a few winners in his time, one of which was regarded as a dud pedigree wise, though was an amazing stayer that won most of it's starts and never came anything less than 3rd.
Alexander has a father who was a famous writer. Bush has a dad who was a president. So, 2 champion horses have generations that will be champion horses Other horses will not.
@xXxOutlawEmoxXx Horses don't really get sent to the slaughter house anymore. He was a fast horse but 16 mill is way too much, it wasn't that he wasn't good I think he hurt his back or something and is at stud now.
Secretariat, to me, is the greatest creature that ever lived. Greater than you & me. THE perfect "10" of nature. Confidence, intelligence, supernatural speed and beauty. I can't think of ANYONE who had it all. Only 1 athlete in history ever speeded UP an entire race to break a track record. Just ONE HORSE. And more than once. It defied the laws of nature. NO one talked about Forego when he raced against Sec. He came in FOURTH. Everyone talked about Sham. Forego isn't a legend.Just in your mind.
once again this horse is a fourth generation of Secretariat, the race horse that still holds the world record, if you are not old enough to remember this, then pick up a book and read about this amazing horse....I'm just say'n, Or watch the movie
I understand what you mean. However, no horse has duplicated what he did in 1973. Only 11 horses in 140 TC races have won the TC. Although he still holds all 3 Triple Crown track records even 40 years later, what we witnessed at the Belmont on June 9, 1973 will never happen again. The world record set by winning by 31 lengths has never been matched even by a human. It is the only supernatural event witnessed by millions.
just saying, they throw away amazing foals, mares and stallions of all breeds and colors nearly every year, thoasands upon thousands of horses, and pigs, and cattle, go to slaughter...but, he does look like he'd make a good show jumper.
Forestry ex. Magical Masquerade (Unbridled) Forestry is a son of Sire of Sires Storm Cat . His Dam is a non producing mare. She herself only hit the board 3 times out of 11 for $45k. I'm not sure what the big deal was, either. Maybe they were thinking stud fees with the storm cat/unbridled top and bottom?
Yeah I agree with you. If anyone had that much money laying around, I wouldn't spend it on one horse. This horse was already going to a good stable before someone was betting that high. It's so dumb, but oh well.
he has a 25 foot stride and runs 45 miles per hour.look that up..its unheard of.and his bloodlines are super.....thats why hes 16 million dollars...if you knew about thoroughbreds then you wouldnt write stupid comments =)
@barboro1 Hi curious about why you mention not mouth shanking 2 yr olds- i.e young horses. I Hot Walk part time and always , if they aren't worked that day , just walked and no Tranq , the chain is put in the mouth. I am told to distract an otherwise overly frisky walking session in the shedrow. They spend the entire time chewing on it.Would be interested in hearing your view in more detail. Mouth too tender at that age ? Thanks
I wish I could buy every horse that ever went to an auction, I think I'd buy all the kill buyer's horses, I don't think these beautiful animals should be slaughtered and turned to glue.
Anna is an equestrian 16 Million dollar horse turned to glue... Do you even beleave the crap you come up with or do you just type and laugh like you didn't do it?
Horses are an investment. An incredibly expensive investment, such as this one. You're not going to dump a horse you literally spent millions on at a slaughter house first chance you get.
Horse Racing is Animal Cruelty. Horse were not meant to run like that. I turned my back on this Abuse after I saw how many horses Were dying live on TV for the simple pleasure of gamblers and those with too much who do not use it to help they use it to hurt.
You said it Linda Marie I agree with you 100 % BAN RACING IN ALL ITS CRUELTY AND ABUSE and the unfair murders of thousands of innocent horses every year.
Linda Maria de la Rosa k sorry but horses... are meant to run like that lol, there's nothing unnatural to a horse about running. it's the most natural thing they do, and race horses LOVE to run, you can't hold them back. I've owned horses who can't be held back from galloping. I don't disagree that it's a cruel business and they do horrible things but saying horses weren't meant to run is absolutely ridiculous.
Rosie Froese I agree that horses are born to run but not to be exploited and used for money hungry humans entertainment . The racing industry is diligent of keeping their dirty little secrets hidden from the publics eyes and a large percentage of gulible or just plain ignorant people fall for their cover up but then their a people who are well informed of what corruption and animal cruelty that is hidden away from the publics eyes. The racing industry would lead people to believe that it is a prestigious industry who care deeply about the welfare of their horses , but in reality it's only real concern is it's revenue earning not the poor animals that give their lives to race and breed to keep their industry thriving . People see the lavish lifestyles of some of the horses and are misleaded into believing that all the Thoroughbreds horses that are bred for the racing industry live in that manner , but sadly more horses are sent off to the sale yards , feed lots or for private sales then the few lucky horses that actually live out their lives in luxury. I love watching horses in their finest hour running free not having an axe ( figuratively speaking ) held above their heads wether or not that they are fast enough to meet the requirements of becoming a profitable racing horse whose potential earnings far out weigh the actual horses life .
@Kyletb06 Yes I know he's pure racehorse, Arabians, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Akhal Tekes, Appendix Horses, and Standardbreds are all pure racehorses, I think you mean he is pure Thoroughbred which yes he is, someone told me he wasn't and I was stupid enough to believe them, for about 5 minutes.
Even if he didn’t have a stellar racing career (smart horse, if you ask me) he still had stud services. Yes, I hear his offspring aren’t stellar racers either, but with that gorgeous confirmation his babies could easily become top HUNTER JUMPERs, EVENTERs….polo ponies, barrel racers, pleasure riding horses… they are all worthy. Top event / show horses can go for the 100,000 - 1M range, easily and IMHO all horses are worth their weight in gold
+Michael. RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ I understand where your coming from but there are other ways to calm a highly strung nervous horse down and there is no need to write in capitals! We all have different methods to help horses cope with stress.
The story quietly going 'round after this sale is that it was all a publicity stunt cooked up for fun and headlines. That the "winner" of the auction had actually purchased the colt privately a day or two before he went through the ring. It was decided by a group to put the colt through the sale, get a phony bidding war going, running the price up to an astronomical level, the private purchaser then "winning" the in the end. It was never acknowledged publicly that is what happened but it makes more sense than paying 16 mil for a colt anyone with half an eyeball knows is not worth anywhere near that figure. If it was headlines they were after - and I'm sure it was - they got 'em. All these years later and people still talk about The Green Monkey and scratch their heads in puzzlement.
Highly doubt that story as the Bidding team that won was Demi O'Byrne on behalf of Coolmore and they underbidders were the Maktoum family , at this time i don't think both Parties were even talking to each other , as Darley Vs Coolmore was in full flow
horsehalters2 “go buy a real horse” what the fuck does that even mean.. it’s fucking breathing, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it’s a damn horse to me.. unless you don’t have eyes
What do you mean a real horse??? If I had all the money in the world I would by all the horse that need help and put them in a giant grassy pasture and just have them to love forever!!!!😊😊😊
If we had $16 Million we would buy Genie, not Green Monkey! (see the Congratulations Genie video response) But Genie is already ours, and she is not for sale :-)

The history of this horse bloodline is just amazing. And only the bidders knew about this.

Jessica Springsteen bought (or daddy Bruce) bought Olympic Gold Medalist Vindicat. Sale price is estimated between $5-8M.
They made some breeder a very happy and rich man.
I think you'd be surprised to learn that there are a number of racetracks in the US that outright ban trainers that sell horses for slaughter.
god how fast can that man speak?
+Equestrianess and what is he saying ? !!
+iTube22100 idk? do you?
Certainly I don't not being English mother tongue. if you are, and you don't understand, that's comforts me !! :)
+iTube22100 dont worry, I dont think anyone can understand xd
Faster than that horse can run apparently
the lifestyle of the rich and famous.....
Total rubbish like many of the anti horse racing brigade.
Rich are not fools
not all of them are the same
Nice looking horse. But, If that was me having 16 million, I'd rather build a stable and wide area of land, buy some decent breeds and hire people to breed them for me :))
The buyer has all that. This horse was for decoration. Enuf said.
I think this might be at Keenland racetrack, but this is a Fasig-Tipton sale
He is very healthy big & strong looking
MONEY MONEY WHILE THE NOISE UPSETS THE BIG COLT WHO IS FIDGETING AND PAWING THE GROUND TELLING HIS LAD GET ME OUT OF HERE .
What a gorgeous colt and very spirited. But holy crap 16 million for a horse? Must be nice to have that kind of money to spend on a horse.
She's a marr
Sorry, pls excuse my typo. I meant mare.
Oh, my apologies. I thought it was a colt. Even more astonishing that a mare would sell for that price.
Do people actually realize that Secretariat is a kind of his own... he actually had lungs larger than and average horse's which is what allowed him to be so extraordinary...
That's a really stunning animal I must say ;)
Judging by the sectionals he done the day of the sale he was a superstar , A back injury prevented him from ever showing his true potential
it would be awful nice if somebody would tell the auctioneer that there's a R in the word dollars!!
i hate how the 2 or 3 people that were bidding on the horse probly didnt even want it but once they hit 7 million they kapt going just to see who would give up first
He's a beauty!
He is now at stud in Flordia
It isn't about the horses physic (it should be) buyers are more interested in there pedigree but sometimes it doesn't matter how good of a physic or pedigree it has what matters the most is if it wants to try as a racehorse, if it doesn't have any interest in racing well that's what can happen unfortunately.
Exactly, I ride a thoroughbred who has a beautiful pedigree, and was worth so much, but when they got him out on a race track he was crap. The pedigree doesn't mean they are good. The thoroughbred I ride, despite his pedigree, works as a school horse!
Thomas Milliken
I've never understood the obsession people have with pedigree myself.
The owners of this horse won the Kentucky, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes all in one day without breaking a sweat.
The owners never won either. Also, those races are 6 weeks apart. 😅
why would anyone pay $16 million for a horse That's INSANE
Because they can. The ones bidding don't blink at 16 million
@xXxOutlawEmoxXx
Horses don't really get sent to the slaughter house anymore. He was a fast horse but 16 mill is way too much, it wasn't that he wasn't good I think he hurt his back or something and is at stud now.
Totilas was sold for 15 millions euros. That's more...
A proven stallion is one thing. An unbroken yearling is another...
Saartje05 you need to know what you looking for. Good Judges Are rare
Saartje05 15.. that sucks jajajaj
Toys like this make me wish I had become a money fleecing corrupt politician instead of an honest nobody...
once again this horse is a fourth generation of Secretariat, the race horse that still holds the world record, if you are not old enough to remember this, then pick up a book and read about this amazing horse....I'm just say'n, Or watch the movie
He's Beautiful!
A horse is a horse, is a horse.
16 million dollars would settle 160 families at least
Or, better yet, go adopt a horse. there are millions in need
horsehalters2 ikr
These are not horses for adoption. They have a job to do
The horses that are up for adoption don't have the bloodline or the ability to even come close to such thoroughbreds.
The new owners will make a fortune in stud fees. Good looking horse!
A fortune he's standing at stud fir 5000 dollars
Linda P Do you know the true story of this colt ?failed on the track , failed at stud.
He died half way through his first crop.
@Stage Door Johnny no he didn't. He had like 8 years at stud.
This horse had "luck" that he was the object 2 of the world's biggest and most powerful racing stables, rivals, argued about.
he's beautiful....
Yeah I agree with you. If anyone had that much money laying around, I wouldn't spend it on one horse. This horse was already going to a good stable before someone was betting that high. It's so dumb, but oh well.
Does it poop gold or something?
It only managed to race 3 times and earned $10,000
A very smart and lucky horse. He didn't run fast so they would put him at stud early.
Now he gets to breed 3200 mares.
He probably destroyed his growth plates in that time trial.
One hell of a tax write-off ! ! !
Can I have permission to use this audio commercially?
OMG I'm sure that old man can hits busta rhymes easily 🤘😎💰
He's a beauty...looks more like a grand prix jumper than a pure race horse. Maybe he'll sire some good competitors in the jumping ring.
how can i talk like that?
Lol! Southern accent plus auctioneer schooling.
Well Secretariat was worth more than that!
THEdowntowndoll __is there school like that lol
he has a 25 foot stride and runs 45 miles per hour.look that up..its unheard of.and his bloodlines are super.....thats why hes 16 million dollars...if you knew about thoroughbreds then you wouldnt write stupid comments =)
U can't buy love
honey, for 16 million i giving you all the love you need ;)
Not bad we bought our horse for 10k and he won us 240k to date
This colt was purchased for $3,,500,000 By the Irishmen, the tried to sale it to Sh. RASHID for $ 20,000,000, but Sh. RASHID stop.at $15,500,000
.
Wow. A pretty face goes along way!
that horse is washing out because the bidding's going on forever. can't believe they went that high. that's just nuts.
Precious.
why aren't you posting anymore
I hope she is ok...
Ok I am so sorry!
I got so much exams rn!
I will post in a few......IDK how much time.
But in little ok? Thanks!
Ok cool! Nice seeing you again
Lukas The Impish Human :D Nice seeing you too!
@barboro1
Hi
curious about why you mention not mouth shanking 2 yr olds- i.e young horses.
Anna's Horsefilledworld they're not turned into glue??? Who pays hundreds of thousands dollars than just kills a horse.
Anna is an equestrian 16 Million dollar horse turned to glue... Do you even beleave the crap you come up with or do you just type and laugh like you didn't do it?
@@thepotatojuicer8245 There hooves and bones ARE used for glue, the rest for meat.
the horse is like: "this milimseveninlimidilididudel guy needs some help"
That poor handler... horse lost his mind!
That poor horse... handler has lost his mind
Horses are an investment. An incredibly expensive investment, such as this one. You're not going to dump a horse you literally spent millions on at a slaughter house first chance you get.
no meat buys there lol
Lmao...I no right..I'm suprised😂😂😂😂
I love Zenyatta but having a descendent of a great horse as Secretariat...what an honour!
Secretariat is in a majority of the bloodlines. I've owned 9 TB's and all but 2 had Secretariat. Not a big deal
Cry all ya want. It isn't happening. Laughing my ass off at those who cry about horse racing. lmao!
Linda Maria de la Rosa ge
Rich people with to much time on there hands.
Horse racing and horse auctions end in death. Don't go to the races
this isn't true at all. Next time do your research before you comment.
ABlacksB I have. Maybe you should.
Maynard Runkle Im actually vegan. And I don't mean actions on their own.
Brooklyn Lionvalley I didn't fucking respond to you
Brooklyn Lionvalley I was a
talking to Maynard Runkle don't get involved in something you can't finish
There is no way in hell I'd spend that much money on a damn horse!
so did nobody see the chain he had in his mouth! so bloody uncomfortable! no wonder he never did any good! poor horse!
+Michael. RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ How do you know when I was born! You obviously don't know how to look after one !!!!!!!
+Michael. RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ I have horses myself and would never put a chain in his mouth, why do you do this then? Michael!
+Michael. RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ I have horses myself and would never put a chain in his mouth, why do you do this then? Michael!
+Michael. RODRIGUEZ RODRIGUEZ I understand where your coming from but there are other ways to calm a highly strung nervous horse down and there is no need to write in capitals! We all have different methods to help horses cope with stress.
Don't be so sensitive. He got to eat better food than us :p
lets face it does it really matter what they cost. To us horsey owners are horses are worth the world to us!! its what they mean to us that matters! x
that horse's back was too long and he wasn't even pretty and yet he went for $16 million. people are stupid. go buy a real horse
What? That is an absolutely perfect thoroughbred.
