    : : : Neck and Fingerboard : : :
    After staring at my neck for months and months while I worked on the body, I decided to recut a new neck from a nicer piece of wood than the one seen in Part 03. It paid off. After the neck was cut, sanded and slightly modified, I installed the truss rod, glued in the fillet strip to cover it, and got to applying my fingerboard. (Which was cut, rough radiused and slotted with CNC but not filmed)
    My method for the glue up was to install two small indexing pins into the neck to locate/center the fret board and also stop it from sliding around. Then, I applied a light to slightly-more-than-light slathering of Titebond glue to the surface and used hand clamps and large rubber bands to apply as much even pressure as I could manage.
    The result was pretty decent. It was slightly better on my tester neck, but nothing I can't work around. A few small bubbles/gaps in the glue line and I nicked the mahogany once or twice while I was scraping it flush. All in all, a result.. after months of inactivity.
    Also, while poring over photos of the original, I spied another chance to add a little flourish and possibly some extra authenticity to the neck build... just for some needless, extra complication.
    Big thanks to Doug Short for our seemingly unending collaboration on this build. Check out his build and lots more info here: dsgb.net

    Fantastic dedication. It looks superb. I love the way the fingerboard contrasts with the mahogany.

    I love these videos. About how much did this project cost you? Also, do you have a parts list? I'm thinking about following your videos and building one myself.

      I stopped keeping track after about $1600. But that included a lot of tools and things I didn't own... also training in CNC and rental costs. There is a Red Special forum on FB with a lot of information. I have a blog there with some helpful stuff, but there are people with a LOT more knowledge than me. But it's been a hell of a ride! I recommend it if you can do it.

    Hi. Congrats. Amazing Job. What is the fretboard thickness? 7mm?

    The two dot inlay will be on the 7th fret, not the 9th fret

    Hi Luke, how did you get the 2 degree angle on the neck? Am thinking about making a jig of some sort and planing / routing?

      Well, I cheated and used CNC. But in the end I still need to do some fine tuning to make everything work. Not sure how you're making yours, but I'm positive there are youtube tutorials to aid you.

    Did you opt for 6 mm or 6.35 mm inlays? I'm up to this in my build.... finally!

    • @Lukeyourself
      @Lukeyourself  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought both, but used mostly the 6.35mm (1/4") inlays. Mine were slightly different colors, and I used the smaller ones at 24.

      @@Lukeyourself Thanks so much. I'll do the same! I'm so excited to finally start this project. Thanks again for this inspiring series and the detailed descriptions. This and Doug's thread are the blueprint for my entire build!

    Hi, tell me what wood is the Fingerboard? greetings from Argentina

      Hello in Argentina! The fingerboard was made from European/white oak, then grain filled and painted black, per Brian's original.
