    Thank you for these facts, Gregg. I actually have heard them before, so here are five new ones:
    1. Sweden used to be a superpower. The Swedish Empire was at its height in 1658.
    2. The Swedish Diplomat Raul Wallenberg saved hundreds of Jews from the Nazis during WWII. Based in Budapest he gave them Swedish citizenship and flew them to Sweden.
    3. 60 years ago, Swedish car manufacturer Volvo gave up the patent for their invention of the three-point safety belt, making it available to all vehicle manufacturers to use for free. It´s regarded to have saved millions of lives.
    4. Developing computer games has become one of Sweden’s largest industries. Exporting equally as Swedish iron ore and Swedish paper pulp industries. Approx. 25 billion kronor in 2020.
    5. Swedish furniture company IKEAs catalogue used to be the most widely circulated books on the planet. With 203 million copies distributed at its peak in 2017, Ikea's yearly catalogue sits beside the Bible, the Quran, and the "Harry Potter" series as the most popular books in the world. Now they are going digital.

    There is seven elements of the periodic table that is only found in the Stockholm archipelago. Yttrium (Y), Ytterbium (Yb), Terbium (Tb), Erbium (Er), Skandium (SC), Holmium (Ho) and Thulium (Tm) was found in the Ytterby mine in Resarö. It's where most elements been found in the entire world. Does it counts as seven things you didn't know? 😉

      Not exactly true. While they were first discovered in the Ytterby mine, they can all be found globally and a few of them are actually quite abundant! It is cool however that four of the elements are named after the mine and the other three named after Scandinavia, Stockholm and Thule (northern lands in mythology).

    A fact that I don’t think is very known is that Sweden has been very involved in crash safety for children, working to get high safety requirements that currently apply to children in cars in Sweden and many other countries. The Swedish research institute VTI together with NTF, SIS, Folksam and Volvo is the creators of the complimentary ”Plus test”, which test car seats a few tests extra than the current EU standards (ECE R 44). The Plus test is used in the Swedish market. The test measures the forces subjected to a child's neck in a frontal collision.

      The phone book? It was printed between 1880 and 2016 and every household, every company and every phone booth had one or several current copies. In 1880 it was just a few hundred copies for the Stockholm area, since the phone was a new invention (patented by Bell in 1876) but already in 1909 there were 260.000 copies handed out. The number of copies increased every year, for more than 100 years, until 2012 when it was being phased out. The phone book was handed out for free to your door once every year. For some areas, like Stockholm, there were several versions handed out since every phone number didn’t fit to one book.

    Speaking about Volvo i believe they were the first, or one of the first, car brands to introduce seatbelts. Don´t know wich year exactly but i´m pretty sure it was the Volvo 120-series or "amazon" as it´s commonly known, produced from 1956 to 1970. Still one of the best looking Volvo models imo.

  • @Ami-zi6si
    @Ami-zi6si 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Late to the game but knew 3 of the facts so my 3 facts about sweden that you probably dont know:
    - during the viking era while norwegians and danes tended to travel westward and southwards and thus are oftentimes the wellknown vikings, swedes tended to travel eastwards and southeast with trade connections going so far east as central asia, they set up tradeposts in modernday western russia, and because of the swedish vikings and tradeposts is actually where russia gets its name from today from an old word meaning roughly "the ones who row".
    - Staying in a historical line one of the first kings in sweden we have historical evidence for was "Magnus ladulås" who got his nickname ladulås (barn lock) because he instated a law that said that while the swedish kings (and possibly aristocracy, cant 100% remember) had previously been entitled to nightroom and food for them their servants, soldiers, and mounts, from whoever he chose to visit in the country, which could bancrupt unfortunate peasants, now the farmers had a right to refuse. Practically putting a lock on their barn.
    - the diffrence in time between all men being allowed to vote in sweden and all women (so everyone) being allowed to vote in sweden was only 2 years, tho because of the length of election cycles this was practically a 4 year gap or a 6 year gap if you count between when all men were legislated right to vote and when women could vote in a government election. This is because pretty much as soon as the men of the common class gained majority in the government, so after the first election where all men were allowed to vote they also instated a right to vote for women. The whole story is quite fascinating tho as the right for all men to vote actually happened after some liberal younger men of the voting class elected in a few men into the government who wouldnt even have been allowed to vote in the election themselves.
    A couple of bonus facts cause I cant help myself:
    - at one point in history moose almost went extinct in sweden due to a rise in poaching caused by famine coinciding with guns becomming commonly used in hunting.
    - while sweden is a kingdom it has atleast one "republic" that operates within it as part of the country. The "republic of jämtland" was started in the late 20th century as a cultural project and protest in response to some controversial legislature going on at the time, while the "republic" holds no political power it has its own flag, crest, anthem, president, and a yearly celebration/music festival in Östersund where the president holds a yearly speech. A couple of years ago the president wven named the trainer of the local fotball team minister of sports and made an anouncement of a "national slogan" based of of the trainer and fotballteams motto of "we never give up" (tho ofc that was phrased in jamtlandish, the dialect/regional language of jämtland). And alot of Jamtlandish people lean hard into the republic thing and hold alot of national pride towards the region itself rather than or compared to sweden as a whole. This "republic" might arguably mean sweden should be termed an empire, the argument against that however is that the republic holds no particular political power of its own if one dicounts the fact the the republic itself does line up prefectly with jämtlands (och härjedalens) län.
