The point where CyberBill comes in with the line ‘locating Bill Potts...accessing Bill Potts...I am Bill Potts’ is one of the most bone-chilling moments in New Who and it is absolutely perfect
I am one of those lucky gits that got to experience the Series 10 finale episodes at broadcast without having seen the trailers (somehow), and I can absolutely confirm that the Simm Master reveal as intended was phenomenal and completely caught me off guard, as did the Mondasian Cybermen! Definitely one of the best series finales of all time for me.
I think I’m one of the few people that thinks the ‘trilogy’ of WEAT/TDF/TUAT is absolutely stellar all the way through. It’s an incredible deconstruction of the doctors character seeing him cocky and overconfident at the start like you said, and then by the end of tdf he’s so sick of losing people that he wants to die. Moffat really went out with a bang, I’ll defend all three of these episodes forever
I haven’t seen TUAT in quite a while, I think I’ll watch it and make a video on it after I’ve finished TDF. Make this a three-part video rather than two parts
I can agree on the first two, but TUAT was an insult to the character and memory of the first Doctor and, I believe, pretty weak overall with it's story. But I'm glad you enjoy it.
I do agree with how well executed the reveal of Bill being converted was. I wasn't a huge fan of Bill, but even I thought "Christ, that's dark" when it gets revealed she's been turned into a cloth-covered cadaver.
John Simm as Mr Razor is my favourite thing in this episode. I got to ask him about Mr Razor and he said that he was originally going to have a much higher voice, sort of like Borat, but looking at the mask, he wanted a deeper voice. Also I was cosplaying Razor and he said "The bad tea" when we had our photo together.
It is one of the best episodes. I love Capaldi as the Doctor - he's such a phenomenal actor. What happened to Bill gutted me, but it was absolutely brilliant.
I love these 2 episodes, they have everything in them , story, characters , humour and sadness. I really feel bill doesn't get enough love. I think her , bill and calpaldis team are the best team to be in the TARDIS. And calpaldi was phenomenal in these episodes. He's such a damn good actor. He's my favourite doctor. Looking forward to your next video.
I’m not someone who hates Clara, but Bill was a real breath of fresh air after three series of her. Series 10 felt so exciting and new to me, and this finale really convinced me it was my favourite series ever
speaking of the Simm Master reveal, I've introduced my girlfriend to Doctor Who (we've just got to season 4 of nuwho), so reveals like these will actually work provided I don't spoil anything and man am I looking forward to her reaction

As someone who saw this with no spoilers, the Mondas reveal followed shortly after by the Sill reveal was almost heart attack inducing just from the excitement of it.
also, I absolutely agree with everything you've said, the characters, the writing, the fact that the og mondasian Cybermen are the scariest (Literally cloth on their heads are the scariest, helped by the fact you know there's a rotting face under there), and frankly the music is also iconic - one of my favourite things in mediums like this is musical foreshadowing, e.g. in Utopia, This is Gallifrey plays over Professor Yana, in "Melody Pond" you can hear parts of it just subtly and in parts of the episode before the Master's reveal, you can hear The Master Vainglorious over Razor. When it comes to reasons why things happen in narrative, I always took Simm returning to Missy as like, a symbolism of a relapse? I know a lot of people thought he just returned to add some spice and was otherwise pointless but he was also an especially cruel Master, and the goatee was also more of the past Masters too. This is absolutely a fantastic episode and my favourite of Twelve's run! (also I'm new to your channel, why do you just have a random cutout of Rian Johnson's face on your wall?)
Personally my top 3 episodes are (if you'll let me count two parters as one): World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls Heaven Sent and The Angels take Manhattan Heaven Sent gets a lot of love already (and rightfully so), but BOY is it refreshing to see World Enough and Time get the love it so very much deserves, looking forward to part 2!
This episode is what made me a fan. My first experience with Doctor Who was "The Runaway Bride" I loved David Tennant's character but never thought much about the show. But watching this was amazing. Seeing the Cyberman for the first time, people mid conversion just hitting a "Pain" button just being put on mute; and then that ending. "I am Bill Potts." and the single tear. Simply amazing!
Great video!! I got to admit, when I heard that the Mondasian Cyberman were coming back, my first thought was why on Earth would they do that? But, I was blown away by how good the episode was. This episode is definitely up there with my favourite New Who episodes!!
I came to dr who after this episode aired and watched this on streaming as part of a binge. The reveal that razor was John simm was so shocking and surprising and wonderful for me (since I didn’t see any promo content for it beforehand). Maybe I’m dumb for not seeing through the prosthetics and makeup, but I’ll take being dumb for how great the reveal was
The Doctor hasn't had a positive send off with a companion since Martha. Martha left and got to live a life. but Donna forgot, he lost the Ponds, Clara died and then Bill died. Thus whenever a companion returns they have to come up with a convoluted way of bringing them back meaning that episodes like The Children of Time where multiple companions meet can't really happen which is sad.
Excellent video! WEAT was the episode that redeemed the Cybermen for me. It brought back the body horror and the creepiness that they used to have. They're at their greatest in ROTC/AOS, but this episode is on par. Loved the design of the Mondasian Cybermen as well! - Corey
I love WEAT, one of my favourite episodes too, but I think I love even more the Under the Lake/Before the Flood 2 parter, no one talks about it and I think it's just an amazing forgotten episode, that's too bad

You're right about the "light-hearted" music at the beginning of the story. It's rare that Murray Gold goes wrong but his attempts at levity occasionally fail. The score to Mummy on the Orient Express is atrocious & undermines the threat levels. Another great video.
11:57 I didn't clock that it was him until he started dropping lines like "Oh, you really have been here before," and "You would never be so self-destructive," when he's talking to Missy at the end, and even then I only clocked it because I knew he was in the episode - curse you, BBC marketing.
I’m torn on this idea. I love Series 10 and would obviously love to see more stories with that team and that setup, but it’s so good as a self-contained series that I’m almost glad it was only those few episodes. A bit like Eccleston’s series, it gives you exactly what you need and leaves you wanting more. But I agree that it would’ve made the return of Heather more impactful.
@@Joe_Brennan_ I think the return of Heather was as impactful as it could get. And I love it when the show sets something up and I've forgotten all about it when they actually pull it. In this case I'd completely forgotten about Heather, I was shocked and surprised and then delighted when she showed up, because of course that's exactly what she would do, isn't it?
There are a few episodes that are really outstanding and practically perfect in every way they try to be. I just really love everything this episode tries to be, and think the execution is fantastic
It also adds a lot of depth to Simm's Master that he was able to play his role as Razor so well for years, giving more credibility to Missy's capacity for change. You can't fake compassion if you really don't know it at all.
Have to say that despite knowing the Simm Master would be in it I didn't recognise him until the end reveal, much better Master reveal than Timeflight it must be said. This episode is beautiful, the best villains at their peak, the amazing drama, dark tone, and probably my favourite Doctor of the revival (tied between Capaldi and Eccleston)
The Doctor isn’t in it much, but when he was in it, he was superb. I’m so glad this episode gifted us with a moment where Peter Capaldi says “My name is Doctor Who”. He’s even better in The Doctor Falls

I agree with you that the parasitic Christmas special ends up slightly detracting from the ep (very slightly) robbing Peter's last line being "I hoped there'd be stars", that had me almost crying! haha

It was the perfect sendoff to Peter's character interpretation (Laughter, Adventure and Kindness) and One's speech about good and evil and the Doctor of War's True Meaning were beautiful. And of course, the farewells of Clara, Bill and Nardole combined with 12's regeneration speech was beautiful!
ahh incredible video !! world enough is definitely one of my fave episodes of all time, it’s just brimming with amazing ideas (time dilation, missy as the doctor, creepy hospital horror stuff) & is super dark which is when the show is at its best in my opinion. u just earned a new subscriber 😅
I was honestly unimpressed with series 10 the first time I watched it (I have since come around on it more), but when me and my brother first sat down to watch this episode with absolotuely no expectations (we had not seen the trailer) we were completely blown away. Being lifelong fans of the classic series the reveal was unbeleivable. I thought then and still now that this episode is the best since season 4. I'm so glad we hadn't seen the trailer. The reveals were so cool.
I would have probably had World Enough and Time as a two partner itself, Could have have it practically a Doctor light episode as Bill just waits and slowly figures out what’s going on. As in more Doctor light that it already is
I wasnt enjoying doctor who when this episode came out, I definitely fell off the hype train in the big gap between series 9 and 10. As a result I didn't see any trailers or promotional material so the cybermen and master reveal was completely unexpected. At the time I thought it was bad and stupid, upon many rewatches its now one of my favourites too. Series 10 as a whole is regarded a lot higher by me now than it was at the time of release
I'm glad you're able to enjoy it now, despite burn-out at the time. It's a shame there are probably a lot of people like you who gave up on the show and missed this great series
Joe Brennan in a way I treat it the same as classic who, I wasn’t watching properly / at all at the the time and I can watch it fondly with hindsight and as escapism from current who
It is, indeed, a brilliant episode with some of the best cinematography I've ever seen on Doctor Who. It just crackles with ideas and well-written character scripting and fine acting. It sets up a trilogy which carries The Doctor through an emotional wringer of failure to the point where he an't go on, but finds redemption in a need to save the life of just one man. I just loved the whole thing.
one thing i noticed when watching this video is that missy goes in the lift to rescue bill first and stands in the middle. that moment was about her. she wanted to be good, she wanted to save bill to prove she could be good. she betrayed her past self who converted bill into a cyberman. i believe she regretted it and wanted to make it right to bill the only way she knew how, revenge.
This episode is just exceptional and is definitely my favourite story of all time but also kinda depresses me - it just shows how good capaldis era could’ve been had the writing been there
I really enjoy Capaldi’s era, but the writing could’ve done with being a bit more consistent. I think, on the whole, Series 10 is really great. It had this really nice refreshing vibe. I might do a little look back on the series as a whole further down the road
Joe Brennan please don’t misinterpret that as me saying I don’t like his era by any means.. I love capaldis era! But, he is not my favourite doctor when he quite easily could’ve been both my favourite and probably the best doctor we ever had
I don't agree one second, about that stuff of Twelve's ''bad'' or ''lazy writing''. For me it's the most perfect era of them all, with an incredible evolution of the character and fantastic stories of real 'sck !... 'Bad'' & ''lazy writing'' are what we can see now (if you can do that without vomit !) since Chibnall is driving the Who-Fantom-Train right in the wall (maybe thinking he'll go thru it ?!)...

For me despite it's flaws and there are a fair bit of them it's Planet Of The Spiders. Hits the right emotional beats and the ending arc suits the Doctor's regeneration perfectly for me.
Dam i remember i was quite young when this episode came out and it scared me so much it took 5 years to build up the courage to watch it again. Luckily imdidnt know it was a simm or Cybermen story before watching.

I knew The Saxon Master was returning, and I was looking to see when he would appear in the episode, and I still didn't recognize he was Razor. Crazy stuff.
Fantastic episode, even if incredibly dark. Certainly the best of S10 and in my top 10. Before this ep, I thought the original cybermen were the lamest-looking monsters ever in Who - obviously just extras in sacks. But after seeing this episode, they are the creepiest most horrifying monsters ever. (My favourite episode, however, is Hell Bent - visually gorgeous and full of lovely dialogue that's loaded but you don't know which one of them has lost their memory until the reveal at the end.)
Yes, this is an excellent episode. I like it soooo much more than its conclusion in the following episode, as I do kind of wish they were turning them into something other than Cybermen... but that's another discussion.
To be fair, Bill does point out that a people calling themselves "time lords" can't possibly be as beyond gender and it's associated stereotypes as much as the Doctor claims
@@Joe_Brennan_ I'm on the fence, I think the joke is fine, especially clever as a stealth Christmas trope (embarrassed by your un-PC older relatives during the holidays), but it's repeated a couple times too many, and so for lots of people overrides all the nice scenes the first Doc is given.

Fuck me, for the longest time I thought that was James Dreyfus and wondered why Joe would have that knobs face on his wall, this makes so much more sense
Doctor's worst long running moral + logical failing is his ridiculous pursuit of good + reform in the Master, against all evidence. Never done at worse cost than here. So it's an outstandingly imperfect moment for him, and episode. Doctor who? This is to the biggest mass murderer in his whole experience. Even to try, even to feel + want anything else towards the Master than revenge + punishment, is a moral betrayal of a former 1/3 of the universe, Traken, Nyssa's dad, Tegan's Aunt Vanessa
I’m a big fan of Spare Parts, I’m shocked I didn’t mention it here actually. It ticks the same boxes as this story when it comes to the horrific nature of Mondasian Cybermen. Both fantastic stories.
....As for chibnall? well he just changes his tune any time the popularity poll swings against him. Its a shame that since Moffat made all cybermen come from different places, we can't get the mondasian, horrific designs sometime, and get the cybusmen other times, and the futuristic ones....but then, whatever the loud crowd calls for, you can bet Chibbers will try and write it lol.
Ahh. you just earned a subby, mate. Now, the thing that baffles me forever is, WEAT goes out of its way to be absolutely chilling, and overdoes the human/hospital cyberman body horror....Yet you will find "alot" of people, esp on TH-cam going "ahhh dis episode is soo forgettable, moffat sux balls" or "Rise Of The Cybermen did it better", but actually, this is more about nostalgia, and liking certain doctors or characters. I have actually called Moffatt out alot during certain parts of his time, and he's no Robert Holmes, but, theres a very good reason Spare Parts and World Enough And Time get the critics choice...Its because they pull no punches on horror. its in your face, it disturbs you, and it doesnt apologise. Theres alot of great cybermen designs and maybe even better written stories than the s10 finale, but no RTD cybermen episode comes close to being as chilling....and honestly, *they were never meant to be.* Moffat is an artist, he has a vision, controversial or crowd pleasing, and he went ahead with it, and thats to be respected.

On the subject of The Master's reveal. Razor has such a ridiculous accent, it was jarring, I was relieved when it turned out that it was supposed to be put on

I have really mixed feelings on these two. I thought that World Enough and Time was fantastic, but I really didn't like The Doctor Falls, and found it such a massive dissappointment.

@@michaeltaylor4375 I am fine with the extreme body horror. The cybs are fine but nothing special. The script I find is ok. The pacing is also ok. The music isn’t what it used to be. The characters were ok too. I don’t have a problem with it. I just don’t think it’s anywhere near other episodes that outclass it in many many ways

i love this episode but hated the second part with the flying Mondasian Cybermen. the only bit i didn't like was the regeneration tease at the beginning, because we knew the Doctor would regenerate at the end of the Christmas special.

Thus whenever a companion returns they have to come up with a convoluted way of bringing them back meaning that episodes like The Children of Time where multiple companions meet can't really happen which is sad.
Excellent video! WEAT was the episode that redeemed the Cybermen for me. It brought back the body horror and the creepiness that they used to have. They're at their greatest in ROTC/AOS, but this episode is on par. Loved the design of the Mondasian Cybermen as well! - Corey

I love WEAT, one of my favourite episodes too, but I think I love even more the Under the Lake/Before the Flood 2 parter, no one talks about it and I think it's just an amazing forgotten episode, that's too bad

You're right about the "light-hearted" music at the beginning of the story. It's rare that Murray Gold goes wrong but his attempts at levity occasionally fail. The score to Mummy on the Orient Express is atrocious & undermines the threat levels.

11:57 I didn't clock that it was him until he started dropping lines like "Oh, you really have been here before," and "You would never be so self-destructive," when he's talking to Missy at the end, and even then I only clocked it because I knew he was in the episode - curse you, BBC marketing.

I would love these episodes even more if there was another series between The Pilot and World Enough And Time
I’m torn on this idea. I love Series 10 and would obviously love to see more stories with that team and that setup, but it’s so good as a self-contained series that I’m almost glad it was only those few episodes. A bit like Eccleston’s series, it gives you exactly what you need and leaves you wanting more. But I agree that it would’ve made the return of Heather more impactful.
@@Joe_Brennan_ I think the return of Heather was as impactful as it could get. And I love it when the show sets something up and I've forgotten all about it when they actually pull it. In this case I'd completely forgotten about Heather, I was shocked and surprised and then delighted when she showed up, because of course that's exactly what she would do, isn't it?
this episode became my favorite as soon as I saw it. its so hard to compare the best of the best though.
There are a few episodes that are really outstanding and practically perfect in every way they try to be. I just really love everything this episode tries to be, and think the execution is fantastic
It also adds a lot of depth to Simm's Master that he was able to play his role as Razor so well for years, giving more credibility to Missy's capacity for change. You can't fake compassion if you really don't know it at all.
Have to say that despite knowing the Simm Master would be in it I didn't recognise him until the end reveal, much better Master reveal than Timeflight it must be said. This episode is beautiful, the best villains at their peak, the amazing drama, dark tone, and probably my favourite Doctor of the revival (tied between Capaldi and Eccleston)
The Doctor isn’t in it much, but when he was in it, he was superb. I’m so glad this episode gifted us with a moment where Peter Capaldi says “My name is Doctor Who”. He’s even better in The Doctor Falls

I agree with you that the parasitic Christmas special ends up slightly detracting from the ep (very slightly) robbing Peter's last line being "I hoped there'd be stars", that had me almost crying! haha

It was the perfect sendoff to Peter's character interpretation (Laughter, Adventure and Kindness) and One's speech about good and evil and the Doctor of War's True Meaning were beautiful. And of course, the farewells of Clara, Bill and Nardole combined with 12's regeneration speech was beautiful!
ahh incredible video !! world enough is definitely one of my fave episodes of all time, it’s just brimming with amazing ideas (time dilation, missy as the doctor, creepy hospital horror stuff) & is super dark which is when the show is at its best in my opinion. u just earned a new subscriber 😅

I doubt that I will ever love an episode more than the girl in the fireplace.
Girl in the Fireplace is pretty good, and I love the shock reveal at the end (why the repair droids wanted Reinette).
I was honestly unimpressed with series 10 the first time I watched it (I have since come around on it more), but when me and my brother first sat down to watch this episode with absolotuely no expectations (we had not seen the trailer) we were completely blown away. Being lifelong fans of the classic series the reveal was unbeleivable. I thought then and still now that this episode is the best since season 4. I'm so glad we hadn't seen the trailer. The reveals were so cool.

I wasnt enjoying doctor who when this episode came out, I definitely fell off the hype train in the big gap between series 9 and 10. As a result I didn't see any trailers or promotional material so the cybermen and master reveal was completely unexpected. At the time I thought it was bad and stupid, upon many rewatches its now one of my favourites too. Series 10 as a whole is regarded a lot higher by me now than it was at the time of release
I'm glad you're able to enjoy it now, despite burn-out at the time. It's a shame there are probably a lot of people like you who gave up on the show and missed this great series
Joe Brennan in a way I treat it the same as classic who, I wasn’t watching properly / at all at the the time and I can watch it fondly with hindsight and as escapism from current who
I was lucky enough to not have seen any trailers for this episode so I was mind blown by the master and cyberman reveal
It is, indeed, a brilliant episode with some of the best cinematography I've ever seen on Doctor Who. It just crackles with ideas and well-written character scripting and fine acting. It sets up a trilogy which carries The Doctor through an emotional wringer of failure to the point where he an't go on, but finds redemption in a need to save the life of just one man. I just loved the whole thing.
one thing i noticed when watching this video is that missy goes in the lift to rescue bill first and stands in the middle. that moment was about her. she wanted to be good, she wanted to save bill to prove she could be good. she betrayed her past self who converted bill into a cyberman. i believe she regretted it and wanted to make it right to bill the only way she knew how, revenge.
This episode is just exceptional and is definitely my favourite story of all time but also kinda depresses me - it just shows how good capaldis era could’ve been had the writing been there
I really enjoy Capaldi’s era, but the writing could’ve done with being a bit more consistent. I think, on the whole, Series 10 is really great. It had this really nice refreshing vibe. I might do a little look back on the series as a whole further down the road

I don't agree one second, about that stuff of Twelve's ''bad'' or ''lazy writing''. For me it's the most perfect era of them all, with an incredible evolution of the character and fantastic stories of real 'sck !...

For me despite it's flaws and there are a fair bit of them it's Planet Of The Spiders. Hits the right emotional beats and the ending arc suits the Doctor's regeneration perfectly for me.

Dam i remember i was quite young when this episode came out and it scared me so much it took 5 years to build up the courage to watch it again. Luckily imdidnt know it was a simm or Cybermen story before watching.

This is definitely one of those “watch it standalone” as I do feel it’s biggest issue is it’s a lot of what we’ve seen before.
The smacked bottom line, though, was a call back to an actual 1st Doctor line.

Fantastic episode, even if incredibly dark. Certainly the best of S10 and in my top 10. Before this ep, I thought the original cybermen were the lamest-looking monsters ever in Who - obviously just extras in sacks. But after seeing this episode, they are the creepiest most horrifying monsters ever.
(My favourite episode, however, is Hell Bent - visually gorgeous and full of lovely dialogue that's loaded but you don't know which one of them has lost their memory until the reveal at the end.)
It is called a "Cold Open" because there is no warning given to help you "warm up" to the story.

Yes, this is an excellent episode. I like it soooo much more than its conclusion in the following episode, as I do kind of wish they were turning them into something other than Cybermen... but that's another discussion.
To be fair, Bill does point out that a people calling themselves "time lords" can't possibly be as beyond gender and it's associated stereotypes as much as the Doctor claims

@@Joe_Brennan_ I'm on the fence, I think the joke is fine, especially clever as a stealth Christmas trope (embarrassed by your un-PC older relatives during the holidays), but it's repeated a couple times too many, and so for lots of people overrides all the nice scenes the first Doc is given.

I’m a big fan of Spare Parts, I’m shocked I didn’t mention it here actually. It ticks the same boxes as this story when it comes to the horrific nature of Mondasian Cybermen. Both fantastic stories.
....As for chibnall? well he just changes his tune any time the popularity poll swings against him. Its a shame that since Moffat made all cybermen come from different places, we can't get the mondasian, horrific designs sometime, and get the cybusmen other times, and the futuristic ones....but then, whatever the loud crowd calls for, you can bet Chibbers will try and write it lol.

Ahh. you just earned a subby, mate. Now, the thing that baffles me forever is, WEAT goes out of its way to be absolutely chilling, and overdoes the human/hospital cyberman body horror....Yet you will find "alot" of people, esp on TH-cam going "ahhh dis episode is soo forgettable, moffat sux balls" or "Rise Of The Cybermen did it better", but actually, this is more about nostalgia, and liking certain doctors or characters. I have actually called Moffatt out alot during certain parts of his time, and he's no Robert Holmes, but, theres a very good reason Spare Parts and World Enough And Time get the critics choice...Its because they pull no punches on horror. its in your face, it disturbs you, and it doesnt apologise. Theres alot of great cybermen designs and maybe even better written stories than the s10 finale, but no RTD cybermen episode comes close to being as chilling....and honestly, *they were never meant to be.* Moffat is an artist, he has a vision, controversial or crowd pleasing, and he went ahead with it, and thats to be respected.

Season 10 was amazing. Moffat's best in my opinion.
I have really mixed feelings on these two. I thought that World Enough and Time was fantastic, but I really didn't like The Doctor Falls, and found it such a massive dissappointment.

World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls / Twice Upon a Time WOULD be a perfect trilogy but each episode has like 2-3 scenes that hold it back.
I don’t think it’s better then some other stories like silence in the library, bad wolf and a lot of others

@@michaeltaylor4375 I am fine with the extreme body horror. The cybs are fine but nothing special. The script I find is ok. The pacing is also ok. The music isn’t what it used to be. The characters were ok too. I don’t have a problem with it. I just don’t think it’s anywhere near other episodes that outclass it in many many ways

i love this episode but hated the second part with the flying Mondasian Cybermen. the only bit i didn't like was the regeneration tease at the beginning, because we knew the Doctor would regenerate at the end of the Christmas special.
