Good Paper really is underestimated for the endresult. Lightfastness yes but if you mainly working in a sketchbook or coloring book, it's not number one priority in my opinion. Since the 100 Crayola Box is the biggest Set I own, I like to use them as undercoat and detail on top with ballpoint pen or higher standard colored Pencils, which I usually have in smaller Sets available.
Same !!!! I have been yelling this forever ….. I do all of my undrlayers with crayola and then burnish or finish with artist grade. It has saved me soooooo much money.
How in the world did you get the Crayola side to look so good?!?!? Thats crazy!! You know I LOVE the Caran d'Ache Luminance but i expect them to give good results, but dang you made the Crayolas look good!!! 🙌🏼💜✌🏼🎉

I love that it's not all "get the expensive pencils if you want to be good" in your videos.
Not only are you showing that good results can come out of cheaper supplies, you're also hitting the nail on the head with the info about lightfastness.
Fact is you don't really need it if you're not selling your work, but so many art supply reviews completely gloss over the point.

Welcome! I so agree, there is something magnetic and inspirational about her videos as well as her interaction with supporters in general. I watch and enjoy every video, even when it’s something that doesn’t necessarily apply to my interests. She’s so entertaining, and I find myself inspired to try something new or beyond my perceived skill level. There are very few TH-camrs who can do that.
I think us all in Australia use 90210 as a reference for USA 🤭

I have to give it to Crayola, though. They quite literally have democratized artwork for so many people. For many people even the 24 count pencil or crayon sets were the gateways into a hobby or passion that they might not have sought out otherwise due to the cost of pro supplies being out of financial reach or just being so darn intimidating.

Truly stunning artwork!! I love how you show that even with Crayola, you can still achieve a nice result. I always have Crayola in my collection and I do use them too. Sometimes there are benefits to using a hard pencil such as Crayola. Caran d'Ache aren't generally used amongst us ordinary colorists, I don't own any of them because I just can't afford them on my widow's pension, and why spend that much money on a pencil that is just going to be used in a coloring book. @@16taysia don't say that! There's no rules in art. I don't believe that there's talent. Everyone starts out as a beginner and then gets more experienced, and there's no time limit for how long that takes. Make art everyday and you'll get better. I have MS and my hands are shaky, but I don't let that stop me. Just keep moving forward on your art journey 😊

Luckily nowadays there's lots of pencils set with a cheap price but great quality. Deli pencils for exemple works and feels like artist quality pencils minus the lighfastness, wich is not relevant for coloring book.
The quality of your videos is *chef's kiss*. Great job with the editing, people don't realise how much time that takes hey. The eye looks awesome on both sides, shows your skills as an artist, especially with how good you managed to make the cheaper side look!
Like I always say: While yes you can make art with anything and you don't need expensive materials to do it, the materials do matter a lot! Especially the paper! Once I tried different papers the quality of my art improved so much it was incredible!

75 thumbs up. As someone who got back into drawing in my 40s, I agree 100% with that encouragement around 8:00. First, the pancakes look delicious. Realism isn't where I've gone, but I will say that the nicer stuff is more fun to use, even if beautiful art can be made with the other. One of my favorite drawings that I've done was done with the Crayolas. Nicer paper and nicer pencils are nicer.
I need to get out my prismacolors and colour something! Love your eye, it's amazing on both sides. It is true, that someone with talent can make beautiful artworks with the most meager of supplies. Proof right here in this video. Buying the most expensive art tools does not an artist make. Skill is key. I love my prismas and they'll do me fine, i also have spectrum noirs and inktense pencils, spoilt for choice luckily. Still learning and mostly colouring in stamped images. I also love my copic markers and mix them with every other alcohol pen available. Colouring makes me feel so.... 'zen'... very at peace. Please keep inspiring us all! Thanks Sarah!

Although I can understand why you might love the more expensive brand, I'm not an artist, and I can't see that they would ever be right me. That's just too much for me to pay for colored pencils. It made me tear up when you talked about starting your art journey after 10 or 15 years away because SAME. I’ve come so far and it’s sincerely all thanks to you and Chris Cheng and a handful of other TH-camrs making colored pencil art accessible to those of us looking for inspiration. You should be so proud that you became exactly what you were aspiring to be and even more, behind so many of our creative stories now too.

Beautiful results on both sides! Realism has never been my strong suit, I definitely lean more towards a cartoony or graphic novel style because proportions matter less and I feel a little more free with it, so this and any other realism is always very impressive to me! The casing and hand pressure needed for crayola are why I unfortunately had to cave and order some new pencils, because I have horrible joints it was hurting my wrist too much to keep coloring which was awful. They arrive tonight, so I'm looking forward to putting on a playlist of you and some other artists and finally getting back to coloring :)
The Crayola hurt my hands too and I don't have joints problems. So it's not just you. I barely use them anymore because of that.

Out of boredom I picked up a coloring book for adults and some really old and cheap pencils a little over 5 years ago. I was limited in the variety of colors (it was a cheap pack of 12), but to my surprise I created really nice pictures with them.
After that I got hooked and bought more books and more pencils for a bigger color range. Its enjoyable to work with inexpensive supplies. Thanks to your videos I want to dive into painting with warter/alcohol blendable pencils soon.
I love your channel since you dont just show your art works or advertisements, you are honest and very enjoyable when it comes to art with pencils.

Good points mentioned here. I have seen excellent artists use cheap material and paper to produce astounding work. I follow an artist that has used Kraft paper, acrylics and color pencils and the results are awesome. I have also seen others who brag about having the most expensive artist tools and paper and what they show is trash. It all depends on how you are willing to explore and exploit the materials you have at hand. It also depends on the use you will give your final art: sold? Get the best for your clients is the option. If your work will just sit inside a coloring book, binder, it may not be the best idea to invest in a full set. Sets of 12 or 24 will allow you to experiment expensive tools if the budget is somehow tight. Thank you for this video as it totally goes to the main point of an artist’s journey.

What the hell? The Crayola looks almost exactly the same. That's crazy. You made a good point about the pencils fighting against you; that's how I've always felt too with some supplies before.
I have actually given this same advice when teaching knitting or crochet. Investing in a single set of quality knitting needles or a single crochet hook and nice quality yarn (acrylic is fine - if you aren't allergic, but get the good stuff) is worth it, even if you are just trying fiber crafts. Your videos going over paper choice and the qualities of different pencils are great resources for people who are just starting because you explain the differences, and what additional investment could benefit you. Those videos can be referred to again as people grow in the hobby, and even if they want to progress from being more satisfied with their coloring pages to *gulp*, starting with a blank page and an idea. The blog pages you pair with them are even more useful as a reference.
yep my clover amour hooks just made my life easier. I only have a couple but they're in my most used sizes. If you want to love what you are doing you need to love using the supplies you are using as well.

Sarah this eye turned out STUNNING. I mean, I am blown away by the crayola side non the less the caran d'ache side. And I completely relate to the feeling of having your supplies work with you vs working against you, and how much that can help when you are trying to encourage yourself as an artist. Like, maybe a supply isn't 100% worth the cost over a cheaper option, but having the right tool for the job means less stress and headache and it's hard to put a price on how important that can be to your artistic journey. Ooooor maybe I'm just making an excuse so I can finally get these pencils, hahaha! Your videos are so well put together, and I loved this one. Have a great weekend!

I think you hit the nail on the head why so many people give up on creative endeavors when they get cheap supplies. And it's because they often have to fight and struggle, more or less strongarm the supplies into working as opposed to the supplies working with them, especially when they don't know what else they can do such as having better paper or higher quality tools.
Even though they still came out very nicely in comparison, if I had to go I'd still gow tih Caran d'Ache for the ease of use and the fact that you don't need to fight to get them to work as nicely compared to the Crayola where they were far less forgiving if you made mistakes.

When I saw the cover picture for this video, not knowing whose video it was, I totally thought it was a photo! Beautifully done, especially the lashes!
I remember when I first got out of college I tried to save money and bought cheaper supplies. Arches paper being one of the more expensive brands I thought to save money I would start buying it. I could not make a decent piece of art to save my life ! I felt that somehow I was some kind of hack who had masqueraded as an artist all through college! The surface you pick for your artwork is most important! Changing papers finding quality not only ensures that your artwork will last but will make sure that you’ll be able to create it in the first place! I feel this is even more true for watercolor than it is for color pencils but in both it evens out. Thanks for the video and good luck!

8:30 I couldn’t agree more. Whether it’s visual arts, cooking, crafts, technical stuff (like the electronics hobby I’m turning into a career), or something else, good tools and supplies won’t give you more talent, but they don’t get in the way or hold you back the way bad tools and supplies can. The frustration with bad tools and supplies absolutely can, IMHO, cause some people to give up.
This is why I HATE the attitude (common in my home country, USA) that you give kids cheap crap to use. It was an eye opener, when we moved to Switzerland when I was 12, to see a country where kids use artist-grade (or close to it) art supplies. Here, nearly all writing and art supplies in schools are Caran d’Ache. Even though Cd’A makes some entry level (by Swiss standards) colored pencils, they gave us Prismalo and Supracolor ones. For other things, like the crayons, Cd’A doesn’t even make cheap versions, so kids here commonly use Neocolor crayons. (Kids here wouldn’t even recognize a Crayola crayon.)
So, for blending Crayola pencils, I've found that a normal pink eraser tip (the wedge or the one for the one of a #2) lightly covered in the color itself (rub onto scratch paper, and erase, without rolling up bits of eraser) or coated with construction paper fibers blends them very well with very little transfer or removal of the pigment.
I learned that budget colored pencils like Crayola could work well when you sharpen them with a good quality sharperner. Surprisingly it brought out the pigment way better than decent quality sharperner.
My game changer coloured pencils are the prismacolour scholar pencils. I had heard good things so I thought to give them a shot, and wow. They're creamy and soft, the burnish beautifully and they melt in solvent. And they're also really inexpensive, they're not lightfast, but for drawing for fun or doing prints, they're just lovely.
I find Artist Loft Pencils work out great!! You save money and still get a great product!! They are sold at Michael's in the US!! Burnishing is a art form!! Watching you a bit of me and another gives me a great product!!!

Thank you for pointing out that you can get good results with them but it will be more difficult, I find that's the conclusion that's sometimes missed when professional artists show that crayola can give great results. Yes, they can, but you have to work harder and you have to have really good skills. Quality supplies not only give you the advertised benefits of light fastness and layering/blending abilities, they also give you a straight-up easier time of it.
Yes! I've been using my colorless blenders to blend cheap pencils. I was always sus of using any oil based product for blending as it stains the paper over time, whereas the alcohol evaporates and voila nice blend.
I think it's important to remember that you simply will not get the same results if you use cheap supplies. Quality paper. Quality pencils. It's totally changed my adult coloring. I'm no artist by any stretch of the imagination. I color for relaxation and i find it's a wonderful outlet for my creativity and when i have experimented with budget pencils i just don't enjoy the process as much and the results, at least my results, are noticable. I also crochet and using quality yarn was so much more pleasurable and made a better finished project.

I remember your polls, I thought it was interesting that the first one I saw you asked us to choose between 300 Crayola or 30 Luminance ( I honestly answered crayola) then the next one was between 1000 Crayola or 100 Luminance ( to which I honestly answered the Luminance). I found it funny but also practical that for me I know 1000 of anything would be quite overwhelming and would most likely in the long run discourage me...👍 just ordered the 120 Crayola set last night and have picked up the colors of the world set as well. I figured that they'll be good for travel coloring and just mucking around with. Thankyou for sharing your thoughts, time and incredible talent 👍
honestly the skill of the person using them also comes in to play as well i'm not very good at blending and layering so the Crayola's are the one i love to use

Could you do Staedler verssus Crayola? Staedler are common in the UK and pretty cheap under £20 for a box of 144
I love Crayola pencils; I've used them for many years and have never been disappointed in the least. I own all the other brands everyone is familiar with and have no complaints about any of them, either. I'm not a professional artist, so am not dependant on lightfastness. In my opinion, from using many brands at many price points, some brands are over-priced just to get buyers to think those pencils must be so much better. They aren't. That is a trick used in all types of consumer sales.
I think whoever started the baby oil thing was just trying to mess with us, because it is completely illogical to put any oil product on paper.
I think, the Carand'Ache Luminance, are more vibrant than the Crayola side. By the way, wonderful drawing!!!

Thanks Sarah and Shane - loved the way the eye turned out. I think that you have to have patience to use cheaper products, which I don’t! I do have some cheap Fabre castell pencils and I use them when I just want to colour in without blending or making beautiful pages ( I tend to do this when I am not well) and keep my more expensive supplies for when I am serious, if that makes sense. 😏 Can’t wait to get the swatching pack! But then, all that swatching! 🤣
Yes paper is the most important thing ever. Even for watercolors. You have have midgrade watercolor and make them look amazing if you have the right paper.

I used crayolas a lot when i first started doing art as a hobby and I loved them a lot with their range of vibrant colours, but i will agree improving your art supplies if you are getting serious about it is a must. I am impressed with how crayola held its own but looking at the picture close up you can easily tell the difference in quality
I would like to see more of a fair comparison at one point. Like Crayola versus other starting supplies, then the most expensive compared together. We all know the more expensive is going to win. Though I do like that you made it where beginner artists don't have to go threw different supplies to get smooth results. Your coloring is always amazing.

To my untrained eye, i never would have been able to tell the difference between the two sides of that drawing if I didn't know to begin with! I will have to try out the alcohol trick with my Crayolas next time I break them out.

I didn't know you are supposed use this type of liquid with your drawings and I have no idea how to use it. the ones made by cheaper pencils look very good. the ones made by the expensive ones look truly beautiful. you are very talented. but when I looked the prices for adult pencils the prices are astronomical. The ones you were using weren't even most expensive and they sill had a hefty price. some brands were even more expensive. but the things you were able to do with them is amazing
I bought a set of 120 Castle Arts soft touch pencils and wasn't very happy with them at all. I was so mad at myself for buying them because the reason I got them instead of Prismacolor pencils is because I'm cheap lol and wanted to save myself some money! I got the Castle Arts ones that came in the case so they were $60, so a little less than half the price of a set of 150 Prismacolor pencils. So anyway, when my hubby saw how disappointed I was, he bought me a set of the Prismacolor pencils! And I stand by the Prismacolor brand but now I'm wondering if the reason I was so disappointed with the Castle Arts soft touch pencils is because of the paper quality I was using them on! I had a few coloring books that I bought on Amazon and I heard that Amazon quality of paper is not very good. And I just tried a small little spot with a Prismacolor pencil on the coloring book, but even the Prismacolor one didn't do too well on that coloring book! So maybe it is just the low quality of the paper that the coloring book is printed on. I ordered 2 Johanna Basford coloring books that will be delivered today so I am going to try the Castle Arts soft touch on one of those coloring pages and see if it makes a difference! I will get to the bottom of this today!
I thought I was bad at colour theory until I used a few better acrylic paints. The cheap craft ones use so many pigments that it makes them almost impossible to shift predictably. Fighting with poor supplies will turn you off art faster than anything else.
I should really do more color pencil drawings. I really love coloring but since my coloring skills have improved, it’s gotten a lot longer to color. Oh well, guess that’s the trade off of getting better at art
I found this too. But then, it reaches a point and you get faster again.
Crayola isn’t bad necessarily. It’s not high quality artist grade, but it’s good if you just want easy and basic coloring. It’s also a brand most children started out with that inspired them to be creative and move on to bigger and better things. Crayola is actually my guilty pleasure when I don’t want to spend too much time on a piece .
A quick tip to finding the color you want: Look at the color of the *core* of the pencil, not the color on the barrel.
Thank you about for saying about using alcohol and mineral spirits. This is what I was taught 47 years ago, when I was young and my hands were good.
And Of course, Lightfastness is very important if you want to keep an specific drawing for a lifetime, even if you're not going to sell it.
It always looks awesome, whatever you do! And obviously it is a nicer experience when you do not have to fight against your supplies. However, I think it should always be encouraged that practise and experience and talent and dedication will make you a better artist ... not the more expensive supplies. I have seen artists drawing with just ONE pen ... and the result was breathtaking. Or street artists with normal paint. Many cannot afford these expensive materials, however, they should NOT be discouraged by this! In fact, would not spend too much money on materials, as my "art level" does not justify it in my opinion. 🤔
fun fact... there's more then 120 crayola pencils. they are in separate packs. neon and metallic... miscellaneous colors. :)
I would also never trade my Caran D' Ache Luminance for anything cheaper! except: Polychromos, Derwent Lightfast and all the other high quality Pencils (but they don't count as a trade in!!)😄

paper is def the most important thing for most mediums! my advice to other people and to myself, use the best paper you can afford for what you are doing. even cheap watercoluors will turn out ok on good paper 😀

Next you should try to make an art piece with only a small basic set of prismacolors/ caran dash/...(Abt 15 basic pencil colours) It'll take quite some skill and layering but it's an awesome way to show that you don't need the biggest set and 800 different colours to make great art!
My first ever Crayola challenge was only using 12 pencils- but doing it with a nicer set would be fun!
Beat way to get a sharp point from any sharpener is to turn the sharpener, not the pencil
