As the original owner of a 2004 Grand Cherokee in this same exterior/interior colors V-8 engined, mine has 187,000 on the original drivetrain. More the accuator motors go bad rather than the blend doors. Tail lights start eating up light bulbs because the brass strips that touch the bulb and that overheats the taillight plastic starts to melt and you get connection issues. Yes, I had t o warranty swap out about 4 right front brake calipers because they began dragging. Open up that driver side door wire boot and add a longer piece of wire to those that have become broken due to constant bending that broke them.
Yup everything I have Repaired on my 02 limited with the 4.0. Only thing I would add is the leaking oil pan/gasket (at least the 4.0) and in northern salt states like mine not only does the sunroof drains become brittle and need replaced but the edge of the sunroof opening becomes rusty (no real rott any where else) and causes it to leak through the roof (seen it a couple times) so I sanded it and patched it. You will notice bubbles in the paint on the edging when it's open. Then it leaks only with a hard rain down the visor.
Also the Crankshaft position sensor. Mine was bad and left me stranded for an hour one time. The mount had broken and wasnt connected well so I replaced it and the jeep hasn't shut off ever since
Nice video. I'm aware of some of these problems, had/have some of them. Will watch for the others. This is a model for how to make this type of video. Straightforward, to the point, good video, etc. Some other videos I've seen where they just ramble on and on, repeating things like 10 times, just awful.
I bought a 2004 laredo new and its been going good and I only have 2 problems that you said... the radiator fan and the speakers... I guess you could add the actuators, however its because you said the brittle plastic... I closed my door and the door plastic came off
I have had to replace window regulators on both front doors, a 20 minute change out if you watch and follow the video's it's not difficult, my heated seats don't work anymore, and my sunroof broke and wont retract, it will pop open but wont slide back, have to take the entire roof panel out, haven't done it yet because it's a lot of work from video's I've seen, and same goes for seat heater replacement., some day....and yes, blender doors.
Engine computer is a common failure item. I've replaced mine 4 times on my 1999 WJ 4.7 4x4. Usually, it will stall and not restart when it happens. This last time, the voltage regulation for the charging system was the culprit. Window regulators go out frequently. Valve cover gaskets leak on the 4.7.
I'm on my 3rd computer as well. I have a 2000 wj with the 4.7 and I heard you have to replace the alternator at the same time you replace the computer. I guess half of the voltage regulator is in the alternator. Have you guys heard that before?
How about talking about roof rack nutsert cracks, so people have a tendency to overload Jeep roof racks and the nutsert is six sided which causes cracks in the sheet metal, this also causes water leakage into the cabin. I just repaired mine by reinforcing with panel washers and installing new nutserts
Here is another few problems I faced with my jeep the neutral safety switch wires short out and blow fuse #20, 10 amp which causes AC, reverse Lights, Turn Signals and a few others from working

You just reminded my why I will never buy another WJ. I had an 01 with the 4.7 V8. Don't get me wrong, when everything was working I loved it, but my god there was always something to fix. Even though mine was fairly low milage the list of things I repaired in the 3 years I owned it could fill a book. Never again
@@NajarOffroad After alot of thinking, I went with a 2016 WK2 Limited with the Hemi. I've installed a 3" lift that I cobbled together myself, and installed 32" tall BFG all terrains. Even though it now has 125K miles it's been very reliable despite what many people say. The only real repair has been O2 sensors and camshaft sensor
And its usually the fan sensor on the wj my buddy bought a new 1 and hooked it up and it still went out 2 weeks later so had to buy another 1 and i told him to cut the connector clip off and solder the wires togather works great now.
You are correct about the fans going bad. You are also right about the door wiring breaking. And you are also correct about the rotors getting warped. And yet again you are also correct about the tail lights going bad. But I found with those that there is a metal tab coming off of the circuit board and those metal tabs can get bent or just need to be clean. I just hit 212k on my WJ! I hope you have many more miles on yours, too. Also, awesome drone shots in your video. Leep them coming!!
I've been pretty darn lucky i guess. My '99 WJ has been trouble-free pretty much. I recently fixed a broken wire in the door rubber boot. But i think that's about it really. One thing i can think of, that was a flaw from the factory, is that the exhaust really needs an extra hanger or two. It only has the one, right at the back, and that's alot of weight put on the muffler connections, with no additional hangers taking the load. Mine just wore out the tailpipe where it meets the muffler at the rear. And from the records of the previous owner, he was replacing the tailpipe often.
to fix door wiring issues you must install new piece of wire. make connections inside door and in the body. soldering in the boot where the wire broke is waste of time it will brake again. multiple broken wires in one door boot? get a door harness its plug and play.
Those tweeters are a pain!! I had to buy an aftermarket head for my 2001 along with the head gasket I’ve replaced almost the whole cooling system and my jeep still runs hot and now I got a transmission leak somewhere every time I take a turn it slips so hard. Everything in this video is spot on though.

Rear taillights went out on me two times. Front dive line rebuilt 2 times. Tensioner pulley causing the idler pulley to fail just replace the whole part. Power seat, power window and door lock motors, I've replace them all and I mean all of them. And yeah my as almost caught fire LoL. Non of my front speakers work. I have done a time of work on these jeeps. Hit me up if you have questions. Thanks for the video I just thought I'd add onto the common problems and they are very common.
Just bought an 02 WJ Laredo L6 4.0. Need to check the switch for the windshield wiper handle, they stick when on delay mode but work fine when switched to constant on (auto)
The turn signal relay soldering cracked and blower relay overheated and melted on mine. Also the outside / inside air regulator flap hinges broke. Apart from these I'm very happy with my old WJ, there's just normal wear and tear.
The crankshaft position sensor’s another common problem that needs to be replaced. My Jeep would shut off when I took turns, which could’ve been dangerous! Also vacuum lines in any older car usually end up needing replacement. My Jeep also needed that.
Great Video Owned 2 late model Jeeps, and now a third...It boils down to $50 a month Take $50 and put it in a coffee can every month...If you make it through the year...Great!!! Keep on contributing because your going to need that $600+++ the 2nd and 3rd year.. When you concede to $50 a month in future repairs you could eliminate the anxiety of the many repairs it with ultimately need and "enjoy the ride"
I'm about to buy another WJ. An '04 special edition, with the 4.7 engine. My '99 has the 4L 6 cyl and it's been awesome. The issues many have with the 4.7 don't give me confidence. But this one is so clean, and only 180,000 kms. It's been very well taken care of, and is priced decently, $2500 canadian. That's like $700 american.
4.7s are good. They run into issues because people don't do maintenance and overheat them. My parents have had a dakota with the 4.7 for years and it's been the most reliable part of that truck.
You forgot about the sticking front calipers lol, i have a 2003 4.slo 108k (owned her for 2years) dealing with wobbles and will def replace my balljoints

I had a 1999 Quardra, the LEAK SITUATION with the roof. OK I lived in Portland, which means PINE NEEDLES, so you want to make sure your drain hose running down the track on the roof is clear, OR MAKE SURE THE HOSE IS CONNECTED front towards driver and passenger front doors and all the way to the back hatch. Lift your hatch and make sure cuz those pop off.
Try oil with ZDDP in it. The engines were designed to have oil with zinc in it. Newer oils dont have zinc cause newer engines dont need it. Try Shell rotella T5!! Itll get rid of the ticking.
They will ALL - I repeat - ALL sound like that upon cold start, no matter WHAT kind of snake oil someone says to use, but I run a bottle of Gunk/Motor Medic 5-min. Motor Flush through when doing every oil change, and my engine sounds great.....*once it's warmed-up properly, of course.
I must’ve been fortunate. I’m in Cleveland Ohio and have none of those. 01 with 162,000 miles. Sounds like my passenger front hardware is good but the glass doesn’t move with the mechanism. That’s my only issue. Thanks for the videos. New to your channel.
The way I took out the blend doors, I went through glove department. I sawed off the plastic barrier to get the the blend door. Yanked that thing off. Now my AC is like a damn wind blower.
You gotta watch the axle cups, sometimes moisture and salt will get in there and there isnt much you can do about it. The cups will start to rust and eventually give out. You can buy a kit to fix your cup but you have to take the entire differential off in order to do so. Can be a pain in the ass but once fixed they'll be sturdy as hell.
There was one issue when I was told that the fluid in my front and back transfer case had to be changed. When that was done on my 02' Grand Cherokee Overland, on warm days it started to make a grinding sound when I turned the steering wheel. When I asked my mechanic about that he just shook his head and said " It's not worth the cost to fix that". I took it to another guy who worked on Jeeps told me that a thicker oil would likely be the remedy for that noise problem. I was skeptical when he drained my new fluid with the the thicker kind. It worked. 5 years now and not a sound! That was $110 well spent. Hope this helps someone.
Hi Christopher good to know that. Do you know how many miles or km that oil change should be done? I recently bought my WJ and not sure if that has been done before.
@@jesusrperezd Not sure. My oil was still relatively clear when it was done in 2017. My guess is that it needs about the same maintenance you would for your transmition.

Have an 02 overland and the only issues I have had was a engine replacement before 150,000 miles which is not that bad. On the 3rd engine as of last month and still under 200,000 miles. Also I work in an off road/jeep/Toyota shop that also does regular automotive work as well as we specialize in geartrain building and rebuilding. I am a tech of almost 20 years in the field and really this list is not that accurate but close. Still definitely points to issues I see not as often as more of the common issues.
Haven’t run into all these problems... but the one that caught my attention and I have a question about is how high of a lift did you do to need to change the shaft? My 96 has a 3” lift and to my knowledge nothing else. Have the last bits coming in to do a 2” on my girls 01 GC but if I’m going to have that problem I might not.
You will be fine with either of those height lifts. I originally installed a 3 inch lift with spring spacers and shocks from Supreme Suspension. No issues at all with the driveshaft. Didn't have any issues with it until I decided that it wasn't high enough for me. So I took out the spacers and switched out the springs to 6 inch longer than stock and longer shocks. I've replaced the driveshaft twice since. Gonna be switching to a double cardan driveshaft real soon.

I’m not sure! Guess it depends on repairs! The 4.0 are easy to work on because you have a lot of space! So if you want to save money by working on it yourself go with the 4.0
We have an '04 Grand Cherokee Columbia Edition (it's the equivalent of Ford's Eddie Bauer) with the PowerTech straight 6. Another common failure is the rear differential planetary/spider gears. If you do any kind of rugged off-roading, you can bet your ass the rear end will take a shit before anything else. It's not a hard fix, if you're mechanically inclined. But still, it's worth mentioning that the '99-'04 Grand Cherokees suffer from this failure more often that not.
Scott Bedoe Mine actually turned out to be an aftermarket lunchbox locker that wasn't unlocking to let the wheels turn at different speeds. But there wasn't any leaking near the rotors or brake pads. Something else is going on with it now, so I parked it in the front yard.
Amazing to consider that the Jeep WJ weighs a full 600 pounds lighter than the lightest of the WK Jeep Grand Cherokee product line that ran from 2005 to 2010. That 600 pounds are equivalent to having three grown adult men seated in the WK Jeep at all times, in addition to the driver, as compared to the WJ's curb weight. This thrust-to-weight ratio is another reason I prefer the WJ over any other Jeep Grand Cherokee generation ever made.

Broooooo You literally got everything on the money with my Jeep 😭
😂 I’m glad I was able to hit the nail on the head! Now have you fixed everything?
sameee🙄🙄
Yup everything I have Repaired on my 02 limited with the 4.0. Only thing I would add is the leaking oil pan/gasket (at least the 4.0) and in northern salt states like mine not only does the sunroof drains become brittle and need replaced but the edge of the sunroof opening becomes rusty (no real rott any where else) and causes it to leak through the roof (seen it a couple times) so I sanded it and patched it. You will notice bubbles in the paint on the edging when it's open. Then it leaks only with a hard rain down the visor.
@@NajarOffroad I’m just now starting to just fix it from the ground up😂 ima get me a lil civic to ride around in the meantime
Also the Crankshaft position sensor. Mine was bad and left me stranded for an hour one time. The mount had broken and wasnt connected well so I replaced it and the jeep hasn't shut off ever since
That’s good to know!
OMG the crankshaft sensor gave me ptsd.. stranded twice on road trips because of that. $600 dollar tow... was not a fawn memory of mine
Would it start sometimes or was it just done? I think im dealing with the same thing.
As a grand Cherokee owner I agree...
Nice video. I'm aware of some of these problems, had/have some of them. Will watch for the others.
This is a model for how to make this type of video. Straightforward, to the point, good video, etc.
Some other videos I've seen where they just ramble on and on, repeating things like 10 times, just awful.
03 overland I had every problem mention except the wires in the door breaking (🤞🏾).
The computer fail I see more in the ZJs! But luckily my WJ computer hasn’t failed!
I'm on my 3rd computer as well. I have a 2000 wj with the 4.7 and I heard you have to replace the alternator at the same time you replace the computer. I guess half of the voltage regulator is in the alternator. Have you guys heard that before?
I have 02 overland. Blower motor resistor, cheapest leather seats EVER , fuel pressure regulator, oil pressure sensor.
Yea my leather is long gone😂 I need to get my seats redone!
cheap but comfortable lmao i recommend the really cushy 99-00 seats
Yep. Oil pressure sending unit. But really easy to. fix
Oh no way! Shorted all that out?
I think you're pretty straight bro very informative good s*** my daughter has one and a brake switch just went out of course I know how to fix it but I had a lot of extra stuff in there I didn't know anything about so I just started googling and I saw your vid good shit thanks lmao father in FLA
Thanks mate , probably checked every problem I have with my jeep...
Never again
It’s definitely a love hate relationship😂 what do you drive now?
@@NajarOffroad After alot of thinking, I went with a 2016 WK2 Limited with the Hemi. I've installed a 3" lift that I cobbled together myself, and installed 32" tall BFG all terrains. Even though it now has 125K miles it's been very reliable despite what many people say. The only real repair has been O2 sensors and camshaft sensor
I love those send me a picture of it to my Instagram @Jonathug so I can feature it on my next video
With the all Drive models the low range 4 wheel drive doesn't like to engage I've had it with three different transfer cases and it really sucks
Also the v8 has trouble with the trans solenoid
Thanks bro! I'm about to get a wj cherokee from someone and wanted to see what it's about, glad you made this. I'm excited to mess with this thing.
I am in Australia and drive a 1998 GC Ltd ZG. I have had all the same problems too. Otherwise still my daily drive.
Those tweeters are a pain!! I had to buy an aftermarket head for my 2001 along with the head gasket I’ve replaced almost the whole cooling system and my jeep still runs hot and now I got a transmission leak somewhere every time I take a turn it slips so hard. Everything in this video is spot on though.
r 2001 You're right tell lights window regulator skip thing for the alarm Jeep grand cheer key. Whatever it is fully loaded your cell, right? Whatever you think it goes around.
Track bar going bad causes death wobble, and track bar bolt holes ovel out over time .
Yes sir! And also ball joint is a big one! Honestly just replace every joint in the front end I mean I’m sure most cars over 17 years old need it haha
Yea mine did that as well! Not fun replacing it haha. Yea i bet the rubber get worn out.
I've replaced the CPS twice in 165,000 miles in my '02 4.0
I've had the no key detection/ecu and crankshaft position and camshaft position sensors go out
Great Video
Owned 2 late model Jeeps, and now a third...It boils down to $50 a month
Take $50 and put it in a coffee can every month...If you make it through the year...Great!!!
Bro, this is an awesome channel. I’ve started a few new projects cause of WJ videos. Keep it going 🤙🏼
Thanks man! What have you done?
Najar Entertainment No problem bro, thank you. Mostly cosmetic projects like painting the trim and buffing out the headlights. Currently trying to figure how I can tighten up the play in my steering.
@@VeniVidiMarti have you found a method to join that? I would like to do the same on mine. I work at Nissan dealership driving brand new cars all day with their very precise steering and then I get into my Jeep at the end of the day oh boy turn the steering wheel about 6 in of still going straight 🤣
Henry Martinez theirs a video for that! look it up buddy
The lifter tick in the 4.0's is the most common issue.
But at the same time not an issue.. Been driving a 4.0 with tick since I bought it 2 years ago.. Only had to replace water pump so far
Just grabbed one myself and have a couple of these I need to fix. I off-road in Colorado so maybe I'll put something up if I can hit a trail this Summer
Nice! That sounds like fun!
I'm building a 93 bug job floor was gone, front end was completely gone to, 3000 in repairs and counting counting but it's worth it.
Or the rods will just bend if the dont break and a pry bar will fix it back my 97 zj did that
Hey man I really appreciate the video! Nearly made a purchase on one today!
Why didn’t you?
@@NajarOffroad It was a 03 WJ limited with a 4.0 and only like 144k miles for $2k, before the guy could even reply to me it was already sold 😂such a good deal too!
Lift your hatch and make sure cuz those pop off.
excellent info mate! I'm about to by an 03 crd with quadra drive . Thanks from australia
!
I enjoyed the info.
99-04 4.0 motors have issues with lifters. Annoying ticking sound...
That’s a good one😂 I get it once in a while
@@NajarOffroad I just uploaded my WJ offroad. Check it out...
They'll still run forever though, with that engine knock.
Now my AC is like a damn wind blower.
also it pretty much is only a problem with the ones that have dual climate control. Not like the one he shown.
@@christopherjohn8521 thank you
The vent flaps that control the heat were a piece of shit especially when its late fall in New York and the windows fog up and the heat does not make it to the windshield. Brakes wore out yearly. A bearing needed to be replaced.
Excellent job
Pretty much nailed my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Had 300,000 miles before I gave it to my neighbor. Still running
Every single one of those issues on my WJ and quote a few more lol ! !
02 JGC Laredo and the signal relay will go out overtime, had to remove the dash driver side just to replace it.
Tracbar holes oval out and make steering wander
Yea I already welded washers over the holes
02 grand cherokee v8 quaddrive icnition issues driveshaft ball joints back seat belts stick battery issues airbag issues passenger side 109 miles runs good has issues limited model
My 2004 Grand Cherokee Limited has a fuck ton of wiring problems in the door. But it has tow mirrors so its a moose. MOOSE POWER!!
So I shouldn’t get this for my first car if I don’t want to have to do work to it
Haven’t run into all these problems... but the one that caught my attention and I have a question about is how high of a lift did you do to need to change the shaft? My 96 has a 3” lift and to my knowledge nothing else. Have the last bits coming in to do a 2” on my girls 01 GC but if I’m going to have that problem I might not.
You will be fine with either of those height lifts. I originally installed a 3 inch lift with spring spacers and shocks from Supreme Suspension. No issues at all with the driveshaft. Didn't have any issues with it until I decided that it wasn't high enough for me. So I took out the spacers and switched out the springs to 6 inch longer than stock and longer shocks. I've replaced the driveshaft twice since. Gonna be switching to a double cardan driveshaft real soon.
i bought a WJ for 1000$ and i need to only swap a driver side head cause of a dropped valve. i heard this is VERY common i can fix it. i got a 2nd hand head for only $150. other then that the car has done 117k km and everything works perfectly.
Quick question can you 15 inch rims on these Jeep’s?
2000 jeep laredo, 4.0. Seller know trans was going and sold it to me for $2000. NOTE Trans in the 4.0 jeeps are JUNK at 200k miles.. Always ask seller have You EVER changed the trans fluid? If not RUNAWAY.
Driverside seat bracket... radiator fan relay under passenger headlight.. 3way lights reaistor.. for blinkers lol love my wjs tho
Seat bracket!!!! Ive been through 3 in one year. They all crack in exact same spot. The junk yard has tons of parts, but all the seats are cracked.. im gonna have to sit on a milk crate i guess.
Hey hey hey, quick question. Accidently rolled over my tach and speedometer needle on my 99 wj and was thinking about swapping it out for an upgraded cluster. Any store or brand you know that has something?
I want a beater Cherokee, and I did find one for $500. It runs needs battery. How much should the whole engine transmission repair run me when we they do mess up. Just want something that’ll be less than $5,000 in repairs/mods
I’m not sure! Guess it depends on repairs! The 4.0 are easy to work on because you have a lot of space! So if you want to save money by working on it yourself go with the 4.0
I’ve had to replace my radiator and blower fan. I have trouble with my tail lights too! 🥴
Have you replaced the from tweeters? I want to go after market but can’t seem to find the right fit
The drives seat is notorious for breaking.Welding is needed to repair
We have an '04 Grand Cherokee Columbia Edition (it's the equivalent of Ford's Eddie Bauer) with the PowerTech straight 6. Another common failure is the rear differential planetary/spider gears. If you do any kind of rugged off-roading, you can bet your ass the rear end will take a shit before anything else. It's not a hard fix, if you're mechanically inclined. But still, it's worth mentioning that the '99-'04 Grand Cherokees suffer from this failure more often that not.
I think that's what's happening to mine. Does it leak on the rotor or brake pads?
Scott Bedoe Mine actually turned out to be an aftermarket lunchbox locker that wasn't unlocking to let the wheels turn at different speeds. But there wasn't any leaking near the rotors or brake pads. Something else is going on with it now, so I parked it in the front yard.
@@leejones1072 thanks for the response! I guess worst case for me I'll just replace the axle. Oh man, I guess I'll be staying busy...
WJ is just an awesome vehicle
Heather seats have a recall on all WJ’s
Im ready for a Rivian...
You should make a video about rusting fenders and how to prevent them.
if you have rust sand it and if you need too bondo it up. Then prime and repaint it. to prevent make sure it has no exposed (unpainted) metal and clean them on the inside water mud and salt will build up on the inner side so just keep it clean
I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee larengo
