This is Irish musician, Shane MacGowan of The Pogues. He just passed away on 30 November, about a month before his 66th birthday. You should check out his documentary, Crock of Gold : A Few Rounds With Shane McGowan. Johnny Depp is one of his close friends and was a pallbearer at his funeral. His back story is really sad. He was addicted to drugs and alcohol. He began drinking at age five, when his family would give him Guinness to help him sleep. He would often accompany his father to the local pub while he drank with his friends. Shane suffered physically from years of binge drinking. Interesting fact, Shane couldn't play piano, so his band's pianist, James Fearnley, had to put Shane's rings on and play the piano so it looked like Shane was playing. He said he found the experience humiliating but accepted the idea that it looked better in the video to show Shane seated at the piano. The song was named after J.P. Donleavy's 1973 novel, A Fairytale of New York. The song was written by Shane MacGowan and Jem Finer, and was released as a single in 1987, then was featured on their album, If I Should Fall from Grace with God, in 1988.
I have to say I've watched many reactions to this song this year, and none of them have been edited to take out the original words. This is the first one that I've seen. I hope it's the only one. RIP to Shane, Kirstie, and Phil Chevron.
It's the antidote to saccharine Xmas songs. Shane McGowan has written many fantastic songs. He's a very gifted songwriter. I think one of the reasons people like the song is that it's down to earth but romantic and fun at the same time. Shane MCGowan when asked why the song was so popular said 'I dunno. Maybe it's because it's not so irritatingly happy' as many others.
Song was released in 1987 . The band is the Pogues , the Shane MacGowan who passed away on November 30th . A massively successful band in the 80's and 90's . Check out the song a rainy night in soho
Irish group The Pogues. My wife & I have this playing every Christmas. Both Kirsty & Shane (singers) are no longer with us. It’s a great Irish group & very popular …. Very different, but very catchy song. All their songs are great.
The Pogues have many songs and this is a classic...this isn't the original version you listened to...this is the edited version. Watch the version from Shane McGowans funeral afew weeks ago in the Church with Glen Hansard singing Shane's part. It came out in 1987.
Yo .... I decided to subscribe as I like the range of material you choose to react to. Both Kirsty and Shane have passed but their duet on Shane's composition will live forever. Shane is an Irish songwriting icon. I Would love to hear your reaction to another Irish icon: Imelda May. She is an amazing songwriter, singer, arranger, and producer. Her original material ranges from Rock-a- Billy (Johnny got a boom boom) to torch ballads (black tears) and fantastic covers like Kermit's "it ain't easy being green", U2s "still haven't found what I am looking for", or Les Paul and Mary Ford's "how high the moon" with the late, great Jeff Beck. Fair winds and Happy New Year.
You don't seem to have grasped the true sentiments with this song. It's supposed to be an old drunken couple bemoaning how badly their have turned out. Shane MacGowan was son of an Irish couple who lived much of his life in Ireland. He was a true poet. Try find some more of his writing. And this is an edited version. Please listen to and watch the real song. His funeral was just a few weeks ago and among the mourners in Tipperary was Johnny Depp, Nick Cave and President of Ireland.
Not the one curse word just Irish terms of endearment..figgot is a very old Irish word it means acted silly or stupid, similar to maggot. Shane read alot of old Irish books and poems...
I think where i was coming from was for a Christmas song lol. That all happens with rap songs isn't a lot of them don't have any real value to their songs any more (RAP songs i mean)
@@ko0974 I think that's simplifying it a bit. "Scumbag" in NY slang was a word for a condom. Slut? Endearing? MacGowan himself said that the characters weren't supposed to be "nice".
@@moominpic condom is not a curse ...scum is used to describe dirt ..none of the words he uses are curse words in Ireland at all ,but are descriptive ways of insulting people ..not cursing . In munster often used go way ya whore , etc slut ..now we Irish definitely do use actually course words proper ones like f you, but also it completely depends on how and tone as to weather it was meant to be a curse, an insult or a term of endearment
Are you taking the piss. You don’t know Shane and the pogues. I don’t believe you. And in particular given you knew where to stop the song before a change occurred
Hey, my son, you did not understsnd the song at all. If you start your videos bring offended by curse words, you will not be able to ever understand this song anyway. Rip Shane and Kirsty 💚🇮🇪
They are not the curse words. They doctored or dumbed it to be more pplctally correct. Hate that. Look for original lyrics. 1987 and Shane mc gowan and the pogues featuring kktsty maccoll RIP to both of them.

This is the Pogues! OMG! A classic and one of the coolest Christmas songs of all time! Love love love it! Happy Christmas! 🤗🎄💜
Irish song at it's finest RIP Shane 🇮🇪🙏 and Kirsty who died 23 years ago. And the original version is best. Always listen to the proper lyrics
Best Christmas song, RIP Shane🕊
WTF! They've doctored the lyrics. What an insult to the memory of both Kirsty and Shane.
Facts, it’s tantamount to book burning .
@@michealjones9863 too right. An absolute disgrace.- I cant watch it on tv or listen to it on the radio anymore coz it make my blood boil.
yeah woke scumbags
At his funeral in the church they sung the original as should be ❤
Why change the lyrics if you want to hear the song as it was sang .takes away from it as he wrote it.pity 😢

Good God, is this doctored, softy version the one we have to listen to now? Bring back the gritty original or Shane will haunt you.
Releasd back in '87. Thanks man.

Did you spot that the cop at the beginning was the actor Matt Dillon?
It’s about a drunk couple having an argument on Christmas Day 😉

Kirstie was killed by a speedboat. you have a wonderful speaking voice !🇬🇧
Punk''s not dead
A love song. BBC says controversial
I thought it was a fun song really.
This one is censored.
Changed lyrics?
Took 2 years for Shane to write this song.
The pogues are an Irish folk band 🇬🇧
Union jack?
The union Jack is because I’m British 👍
Sorry that Union Jack was from me I meant 🏴
@@CaseysRepository the pogues were born in 🇬🇧, right?
Pouges name look them up... Shane McGowan 😢RIP
You need to edit
Pity about the version - a fantastic band - high point 83-87.

aww you played the limp wristed liberal version of the song
I just noticed that this version had some different lyrics than the "regular" version. 😞 I still like it but . . . .
lyrics are changed:(
George Orwell changed the lyrics. Happy holidays brace new world

Yet another one who missed the police officer in the beginning of the video. J.D.
This is badly meddled with. The original never said haggard.
It changed maggot to haggard. What a disappointment
Wrong version
Doctored Lyrics .. me Arse... sorry im ou😡
