Sorry about your dad. Must have been rough figuring everything out without that, and with a mom covering both shifts too. My dad is alive, so I didn't have that particular journey. But. Sometimes the version where they're there .. sometimes it ain't pretty, is all I'll say on that. I know a few guys who have this awesome vibe with their dads though, so I know that really does exist. I collected a couple mentors to kinda be that role at some level. They know what's up and say they have extra dad-ness to go around. We work on our stuff together and you know how real those conversations get on long project hours haha. Anyhow, I wish you the same. Fill in dads will never make up for what childhood may have stole, but they can be pretty great and show what it is to be a good man.

Good job on the video guys! I appreciate how your keeping it clean, It always helps with a better finished product 👍. Quick grouting tip, 2 - almost full (5gall buckets) helps dilute and keep clean, 1 bucket with sponge and 1 with microfibers. Use the sponge to remove excess grout and shape the joints, then use the microfiber to stop any grout bleeding and to remove 90% of the end haze. Much respect for You and all of the Real Fathers out there taking their responsibility as a Man/Teacher seriously. Show em how to fly, then always be there if they need flight lessons (that's real Love) =) .
I know the video is almost a year ago and I just discovered your channel few days ago and I am enjoying it so far. I done lot of low voltage jobs so I wanted to share a tip with you. Those led strip with adhesive on back doesn’t really stick to wood very well and often comes loose under it own weight. Use contact cement and a small disposable brush to lightly brush it on the wood where you plan to stick the led strip. Let the contact dry a bit to a light tacky touch the place the led strip adhesive along on the contact cement on the wood you brushed on. It’ll never come off on it own weight and make it a lot easier to lay it down on corners too since that where led strip are most painful at to get it as flat as possible. Big box store sell contact cement in a small bottle instead a quart can.

Do you have a video on hardwiring those cabinet lights (both strips and undermounted)? I’m curious about the best method to hook those up according to code, where to use conduit, and how to keep the wiring hidden and clean.
I use grout caulk same as the grout color on inside corners and around counter tops, bathtubs, showers. I've noticed that in a lot of homes the corners are cracking because tile installers used regular grout instead of grout caulk. Great job, guys.
Awesomeness. I just thought an idea, when cutting a very small piece of material with the miter, you might want to tape that end piece to the bottom plate to keep it from flying off and getting damage, that idea just came to me as I saw you cutting those small corners. God is good, all the time.
I'm a new subscriber but an old 66 woodworker. I have done a lot of solid surface work at the job I recently retired from, and I am still learning. We used denatured alcohol to clean joints on solid surface material before using the epoxy glue. I did not know that silicone does not stick to it. Learn something new. I like your videos.
Using painter's tape to make a perfect edge with silicone caulk also works great. You put down the tape, press it in hard, use the silicone caulk, rub it in with your finger and take off the tape almost immediately. It makes laser sharp caulk lines.
Pro tip: When installing permanent led strips, every so often place a small dab of silicone. In environments that periodically get warm, that stock 3m tape will pull loose.
I enjoy the Father/Son dynamic you two have. Reminds me of when I worked with my Dad in Construction and Apartment Maintenance. I went on to construct homes for Habitat for Humanity. Now I am a design consultant at a flooring store. All my past experiences have been helpful with guiding my clients in their home reno projects. While I know a lot I still have more to learn such as working with natural stone.

I will use that sealant tool on my next project, never knew they existed at a such quality product level, always used the old standard forming tools. That tool works good. Denatured works great for clean up but i've found just water works fine also for pretooling. The silicon won't stick to the wet surface only the joint thats dry.
When the contractor did my kitchen install, they didn't caulk between the tile backsplash, they just grouted it along with the rest of the backsplash. Over time, the grout in that space cracked. I have patched it once by mixing more grout and re-grouting after removing the loose chunks of grout. But that also cracked. My backsplash tile is made of long skinny horizontal tiles, some glass, some natural stone. Some of the natural stone tiles have bumps on them that protrude about 1/16" or more past the tile surface. I bought the profiling kit in your video and did a dry run to see how it would glide over the tile. The first tile at the bottom sits below the little black "sled runner," so it does not help it glide as much as I'd like. When I press it into the corner and pull, the spreader still snags on grout lines below the runner and also on the bumps in the stone tiles. I remember, years ago I had an apartment that I painted. It was an old building with plaster walls. As the building settled, the plaster cracked. I patched the cracks with plaster of paris. The cracks came back after a few weeks. Then I heard about some liquid that had latex or something in it that was meant to be mixed in with patching compound to make it crack resistant. I got that and mixed it with the plaster and it lasted years before cracking. I'm wondering if I'd be better off getting some of that liquid and mixing it into the grout and re-grouting the joint between the countertop and the tile, rather than caulking it with silicone. If I don't do that and caulk, do you have any suggestions for getting the profiling kit to work better on this type of tile?

You know what- when I read the title to the video I thought to myself "this is not going to work." However the results of the caulking tool were really good! And for anyone that reads my comment, this is one of the few appropriate places that 100% silicone should be used. If you're ever going to use 100% silicone, ask yourself this one question- is there any chance that I will want to paint on top of the caulk, or adjacent to it? If the answer is yes, or even maybe, then don't use 100% silicone. PAINT DOES NOT STICK TO SILICONE, and there's not a real good remedy (primer really doesn't work, neither does caulking over it) for getting paint to stick. Even you guys who are using silicone to glue down countertops on cabinets. For the love of God, don't let any of that silicone lap over onto the face of the boxes. Sometime down the road, the home owner will probably want to paint or refinish the cabinets, and it's a PITA to remove the silicone.
I like these guys. Not a lot of BS straight to the point. Oh, and great tip on using denatured alcohol when using 100% silicone. I still like using my finger when caulking but hey, old dog new tricks right.
I like the way that you cover the closet light with clear plastic to protect it, but to keep the lighting available to you as you spray to see everything by!
Paul, The denatured alcohol and the cut pieces of rag, brilliant. I just finished all three bathrooms in my house using your method and they look great. I had recently siliconed a large piece of glass that we had to re-install after replaced the bathroom countertops not using your method, all I can say is, I am glad it was clear silicone. Tip for all of you out there. If you don't use all of the silicone or caulk just place Frog tape over the top of the tip and around it. Once done you dunk the tip in water and it will last for months. Here in AZ where it is hot as hell, it lasts for months.

I don't usually click like, don't usually comment... but DUDE!!! the caulk tool plus DENATURED ALCOHOL is life changing for me!!!! I've despised silicon caulk since forever... this should be it's own 3 minute video!!
i got the 12 bosch offset driver with multiple heads. Milwaukee has one also. Get one and it will become you standard driver. You don't need the big ones anymore unless you're a framer.
I always use blue painters tape to mask above and below the caulk joint between the tile and the counter. I run the caulk quickly, imbedding/smoothing with a finger. Then I remove the tape immediately, before the caulk skins, pulling the tape over itself at a sharp angle.
I know in a previous video you mentioned you have a hard time of finding consistent products especially for under cabinet lighting, just when you find a product you like they stop making it. Seeing how the LED strips worked out under the cabinet, have you been considering just going with the strips? I am sure it is a larger cost savings and minimal impact on installation. Once more question for you, I am in the process of building my own deck......what would it take to get you guys up to good ol' NJ? Another great video! keep them coming!
Those Cramer tools work amazing!! They don't even need a spray. The problem with the spray is anywhere that the silicone had gaps and the alcohol (or soapy water) gets behind the silicone...it prevents it from sticking where you want it to stick. Try using the Cramer tools without a wetting agent....
I'm about Paul's age and I grew up on the Westbank. Cap used to mean insult or name calling, "You cappin' on me, bruh?" So I can see where youngins could get kidding from. True story: The word "nice" originally (hundreds of years ago) meant "stupid", so go out and tell someone how nice they are today!

About the silicone, I’m a plumber and we use siliconized tub and tile caulk and have never had any issue. We don’t use it in showers but we do put it around lavs, toilets, and kitchen sinks. I have worked for a plumber who used the 100% silicone but like you mentioned in the video it’s super messy. It’s so much easier to clean up a water based product. I don’t know that all of it is siliconized (to be honest I don’t know what that actually means) but it does say mold and mildew proof. It may have something extra in it that regular siliconized caulk doesn’t have.

i love the work i really liked the trick you used on settimg the shadow box. with your grout if you use a spray bottle and mist your wall not to much when you spred your grout it will pack down and cover smoothly leaving no air bubble pits with glass tile i let my grout flash a few mins then i use a plastic blade like you used to shape my grout joints then you can just sweep the grout up when done take a micro fiber towel and just buff the tile right up easy and you never get haze then take your spray bottle mist one last time and detail clean your work and eavrything will be dry enough to chaulk right away it will give full joints first pass and never will you have low spots or pin holes to touch up just always do it in sections that are managable
Great job. I did find one brand of silicone caulk that wouldn't EVER set up after using denatured alcohol. First time I removed it all and started over with a new batch from a different tile store. BUT it was the same brand since it was color matched to the caulking, not much of a choice. Same results. I learned my lesson. Tried Caulk-EZ (the third time) and it worked great. Every since then, I've been using Caulk-EZ only. A lot more expensive than denatured alcohol but time is money when you have to redo a project. If you already have experience and know the alcohol will work, that is the way to go for cost effectiveness. Like Paul said - practice, practice, practice! Couldn't agree more.
What stops mildew is a squeegee and then a shammy cloth wipe. Squeegee for most of the water and the shammy for the rest of it. Been using that combo for over a year and zero mildew present in my shower. Only takes a couple of minutes after each shower. Well worth it. And a step further after that is run a small fan into the bathroom to blow out the hot steam after the hot shower or bath. You'll never see any mold or mildew buildup.
As regards to silicon, not sure if called the same thing but in the UK us plumbers use ‘sanitary silicon’. Whatever they put in it, it works. It stays stuck, doesn’t develop mold or discolour. Any silicon will over time deteriorate, but in any bathroom applications or wet areas unless it’s stamped with ‘sanitary’ don’t use it. Most tubes of the stuff you see on the shelf aren’t sanitary and will fail pretty quickly, quicker if not cleaned regularly.
I enjoy your videos, I have learned a few tricks. things are not always what I would do but they work. My tip for you is build yourself a set of saw horses with the pink studs you see in big box stores. The advantage is no one will steal them and if another contractor comes on the job, they are reluctant to want to use them. I got a lot of laughs but only a few people knew my reasoning.
Guys I noticed the chisel to get the grout out of the corners of the niche'. NICE!!! DID YOU USE SCHLUTER TRIM FOR THE CONERS AROUND THE NICHE? Looks nice! The trick with that Mapei Ultra Color FA is mix by hand not with a drill, the drill at to much air to mixture and makes that rapid setting grout kick off

I use popsicle sticks for caulk. Cheap. Also works for grout lines. Pick up a little spray bottle in the beauty/travel aisle. Then you don't need a big bottle. The spray is much more even.
I do bathroom remodels and I use the exact same products and the exact same method to silicone my tubs and walls the denatured alcohol in the bottle works miracles and the tool gives u a nice clean straight bead
@@OGCJ10 usually silicone is best because grout will eventually crack where your talking about use a 100 % silicone that's meant for bathrooms its flexible and water proof

I've seen a lot of caulking tools, but not one with the sleds to skip over the grout lines. Do you have a source/manufacturer? My tile/countertop joint was grouted and it's cracking. I need to remove the grout before I can apply sealant. I don't want to use a grout saw, as it will scratch the countertop. Any recommendations for a grout removal tool that won't scratch the countertop?
While grouting, if the grout starts setting up in the bucket... Just add more water with a plastic container/cup. When wiping the excess grout off(cleaning), wipe in one direction once, flip the sponge(clean side) and wipe again. Then back into the water bucket to clean the sponge. It helps to have a 3/4 full bucket of water. That way the sediment goes away from the water up top. making for a cleaner sponge to wipe with. Don't worry much about the film till the end and buff. While caulking... Use a small opening on the tip cut at a 45 degree angle. Also caulking to you uses less caulk while pushing it into the grove. You can see how much caulk you are laying and won't be having to fix areas where you left to little(like in the vid after using the tool). The cramer tool is nice, but not really needed. Practice laying a bead and finger wiping. Just wipe your finger on a rag/towel laid out flat. Guys/gals, take note that sponsors like videos that work in promoting products into their videos regardless of the product. As long as it isn't in direct competition to the sponsor.
I watched this video when it first aired, but had forgotten about it. I just bought and used one of those Cramer kits in the shower I just finished and I agree, it's absolutely the best! I used color matched Mapei Mapesil T silicone and the results are amazing. You can do a great job, even without using the denatured alcohol. I used the square edged tool to fine tune the inside 3 way corners and they look perfect. Highly recommended!

I have always hated caulking, or, er, applying silicone... until I read about pushing instead of pulling. So much less work creating a straight bead!

I just thought an idea, when cutting a very small piece of material with the miter, you might want to tape that end piece to the bottom plate to keep it from flying off and getting damage, that idea just came to me as I saw you cutting those small corners.

I'm a new subscriber but an old 66 woodworker. I have done a lot of solid surface work at the job I recently retired from, and I am still learning. We used denatured alcohol to clean joints on solid surface material before using the epoxy glue. I did not know that silicone does not stick to it. Learn something new. I like your videos.
Using painter's tape to make a perfect edge with silicone caulk also works great. You put down the tape, press it in hard, use the silicone caulk, rub it in with your finger and take off the tape almost immediately. It makes laser sharp caulk lines.

Tape can lift the edge of the silicone when you remove the tape , only by a micron but enough to left water in

Pro tip: When installing permanent led strips, every so often place a small dab of silicone. In environments that periodically get warm, that stock 3m tape will pull loose.
Real pro tip is to use diffusers.
I enjoy the Father/Son dynamic you two have. Reminds me of when I worked with my Dad in Construction and Apartment Maintenance. I went on to construct homes for Habitat for Humanity. Now I am a design consultant at a flooring store. All my past experiences have been helpful with guiding my clients in their home reno projects. While I know a lot I still have more to learn such as working with natural stone.

Very meticulous work gents, just like I do, possibly a 1/128th" better! I will use that sealant tool on my next project, never knew they existed at a such quality product level, always used the old standard forming tools.

That tool works good. Denatured works great for clean up but i've found just water works fine also for pretooling. The silicon won't stick to the wet surface only the joint thats dry.
When the contractor did my kitchen install, they didn't caulk between the tile backsplash, they just grouted it along with the rest of the backsplash. Over time, the grout in that space cracked. I have patched it once by mixing more grout and re-grouting after removing the loose chunks of grout. But that also cracked.
My backsplash tile is made of long skinny horizontal tiles, some glass, some natural stone. Some of the natural stone tiles have bumps on them that protrude about 1/16" or more past the tile surface.
I bought the profiling kit in your video and did a dry run to see how it would glide over the tile. The first tile at the bottom sits below the little black "sled runner," so it does not help it glide as much as I'd like. When I press it into the corner and pull, the spreader still snags on grout lines below the runner and also on the bumps in the stone tiles.
I remember, years ago I had an apartment that I painted. It was an old building with plaster walls. As the building settled, the plaster cracked. I patched the cracks with plaster of paris. The cracks came back after a few weeks. Then I heard about some liquid that had latex or something in it that was meant to be mixed in with patching compound to make it crack resistant. I got that and mixed it with the plaster and it lasted years before cracking.
I'm wondering if I'd be better off getting some of that liquid and mixing it into the grout and re-grouting the joint between the countertop and the tile, rather than caulking it with silicone. If I don't do that and caulk, do you have any suggestions for getting the profiling kit to work better on this type of tile?

Led strip need a channel housing with milky shade cover it doesn't reduce light much but takes away those too bright areas making light more uniform.
Another option is to use COB light strips. No bright spots.
The tiles look amazing, and the nook is top notch with that herring bone pattern. Love the idea of mounting your LEDs on a rip of wood to angle them in. Ingenious!

You know what- when I read the title to the video I thought to myself "this is not going to work." However the results of the caulking tool were really good! And for anyone that reads my comment, this is one of the few appropriate places that 100% silicone should be used. If you're ever going to use 100% silicone, ask yourself this one question- is there any chance that I will want to paint on top of the caulk, or adjacent to it? If the answer is yes, or even maybe, then don't use 100% silicone. PAINT DOES NOT STICK TO SILICONE, and there's not a real good remedy (primer really doesn't work, neither does caulking over it) for getting paint to stick. Even you guys who are using silicone to glue down countertops on cabinets. For the love of God, don't let any of that silicone lap over onto the face of the boxes. Sometime down the road, the home owner will probably want to paint or refinish the cabinets, and it's a PITA to remove the silicone.
I like these guys. Not a lot of BS straight to the point. Oh, and great tip on using denatured alcohol when using 100% silicone. I still like using my finger when caulking but hey, old dog new tricks right.
I like the way that you cover the closet light with clear plastic to protect it, but to keep the lighting available to you as you spray to see everything by!

The denatured alcohol and the cut pieces of rag, brilliant. I just finished all three bathrooms in my house using your method and they look great. I had recently siliconed a large piece of glass that we had to re-install after replaced the bathroom countertops not using your method, all I can say is, I am glad it was clear silicone.

Used all kinds of shaping tools on caulk over the years but that one with the wings is slick!
I love that you use a measured amount of water and a timer when mixing. That grout will embed and set correctly.
Tip for all of you out there. If you don't use all of the silicone or caulk just place Frog tape over the top of the tip and around it. Once done you dunk the tip in water and it will last for months. Here in AZ where it is hot as hell, it lasts for months.

I always use blue painters tape to mask above and below the caulk joint between the tile and the counter. I run the caulk quickly, imbedding/smoothing with a finger. Then I remove the tape immediately, before the caulk skins, pulling the tape over itself at a sharp angle.

I know in a previous video you mentioned you have a hard time of finding consistent products especially for under cabinet lighting, just when you find a product you like they stop making it. Seeing how the LED strips worked out under the cabinet, have you been considering just going with the strips? I am sure it is a larger cost savings and minimal impact on installation. Once more question for you, I am in the process of building my own deck......what would it take to get you guys up to good ol' NJ? Another great video! keep them coming!
Those Cramer tools work amazing!! They don't even need a spray. The problem with the spray is anywhere that the silicone had gaps and the alcohol (or soapy water) gets behind the silicone...it prevents it from sticking where you want it to stick. Try using the Cramer tools without a wetting agent....

I'm about Paul's age and I grew up on the Westbank. Cap used to mean insult or name calling, "You cappin' on me, bruh?" So I can see where youngins could get kidding from. True story: The word "nice" originally (hundreds of years ago) meant "stupid", so go out and tell someone how nice they are today!

About the silicone, I’m a plumber and we use siliconized tub and tile caulk and have never had any issue. We don’t use it in showers but we do put it around lavs, toilets, and kitchen sinks. I have worked for a plumber who used the 100% silicone but like you mentioned in the video it’s super messy. It’s so much easier to clean up a water based product. I don’t know that all of it is siliconized (to be honest I don’t know what that actually means) but it does say mold and mildew proof. It may have something extra in it that regular siliconized caulk doesn’t have.

The carpenter I occasionally superintend uses the two part glue occasionally. He introduced me to it five or six tears ago. It is a great product.
i love the work i really liked the trick you used on settimg the shadow box. with your grout if you use a spray bottle and mist your wall not to much when you spred your grout it will pack down and cover smoothly leaving no air bubble pits with glass tile i let my grout flash a few mins then i use a plastic blade like you used to shape my grout joints then you can just sweep the grout up when done take a micro fiber towel and just buff the tile right up easy and you never get haze then take your spray bottle mist one last time and detail clean your work and eavrything will be dry enough to chaulk right away it will give full joints first pass and never will you have low spots or pin holes to touch up just always do it in sections that are managable
Great job. I did find one brand of silicone caulk that wouldn't EVER set up after using denatured alcohol. First time I removed it all and started over with a new batch from a different tile store. BUT it was the same brand since it was color matched to the caulking, not much of a choice. Same results. I learned my lesson. Tried Caulk-EZ (the third time) and it worked great. Every since then, I've been using Caulk-EZ only. A lot more expensive than denatured alcohol but time is money when you have to redo a project. If you already have experience and know the alcohol will work, that is the way to go for cost effectiveness. Like Paul said - practice, practice, practice! Couldn't agree more.

What stops mildew is a squeegee and then a shammy cloth wipe. Squeegee for most of the water and the shammy for the rest of it. Been using that combo for over a year and zero mildew present in my shower. Only takes a couple of minutes after each shower. Well worth it. And a step further after that is run a small fan into the bathroom to blow out the hot steam after the hot shower or bath. You'll never see any mold or mildew buildup.
As regards to silicon, not sure if called the same thing but in the UK us plumbers use ‘sanitary silicon’. Whatever they put in it, it works. It stays stuck, doesn’t develop mold or discolour. Any silicon will over time deteriorate, but in any bathroom applications or wet areas unless it’s stamped with ‘sanitary’ don’t use it. Most tubes of the stuff you see on the shelf aren’t sanitary and will fail pretty quickly, quicker if not cleaned regularly.

I enjoy your videos, I have learned a few tricks. things are not always what I would do but they work. My tip for you is build yourself a set of saw horses with the pink studs you see in big box stores. The advantage is no one will steal them and if another contractor comes on the job, they are reluctant to want to use them. I got a lot of laughs but only a few people knew my reasoning.

I learned to use water/dishsoap mix instead of denatured alcohol. Cheap and at hand, but will give the DA a try.
The trick with that Mapei Ultra Color FA is mix by hand not with a drill, the drill at to much air to mixture and makes that rapid setting grout kick off

I use popsicle sticks for caulk. Cheap. Also works for grout lines. Pick up a little spray bottle in the beauty/travel aisle. Then you don't need a big bottle. The spray is much more even.

I do bathroom remodels and I use the exact same products and the exact same method to silicone my tubs and walls the denatured alcohol in the bottle works miracles and the tool gives u a nice clean straight bead
Is it proper to use silicone for the shower base where the floor meets the walls? Or is it grout
@@OGCJ10 usually silicone is best because grout will eventually crack where your talking about use a 100 % silicone that's meant for bathrooms its flexible and water proof

One thing I have learned from using fast setting grout is to hand mix for the five minutes and the lower rpm’s help it set slower.
You can buy aluminum extrusions like that for LEDs with a diffuser on the front that will dissipate heat from the LEDs and diffuser the light better
I've seen a lot of caulking tools, but not one with the sleds to skip over the grout lines. Do you have a source/manufacturer? My tile/countertop joint was grouted and it's cracking. I need to remove the grout before I can apply sealant. I don't want to use a grout saw, as it will scratch the countertop. Any recommendations for a grout removal tool that won't scratch the countertop?
Great idea of spraying the alcohol to keep the silicone off the counter and backslash.
My experience with self adhesive LED strips is that they come off sooner or later. Putting strips into aluminum channels works better.
Helps with heat dissipation also, makes led strips last longer👍🏻

While grouting, if the grout starts setting up in the bucket... Just add more water with a plastic container/cup. When wiping the excess grout off(cleaning), wipe in one direction once, flip the sponge(clean side) and wipe again. Then back into the water bucket to clean the sponge. It helps to have a 3/4 full bucket of water. That way the sediment goes away from the water up top. making for a cleaner sponge to wipe with. Don't worry much about the film till the end and buff. While caulking... Use a small opening on the tip cut at a 45 degree angle. Also caulking to you uses less caulk while pushing it into the grove. You can see how much caulk you are laying and won't be having to fix areas where you left to little(like in the vid after using the tool). The cramer tool is nice, but not really needed. Practice laying a bead and finger wiping. Just wipe your finger on a rag/towel laid out flat. Guys/gals, take note that sponsors like videos that work in promoting products into their videos regardless of the product. As long as it isn't in direct competition to the sponsor.
I occasionally see descriptions of using original 409 spray cleaner much as you describe using denatured alcohol.
Look into Lutron claro series for the counter outlets , You could almost match the tile color and get rid of those white outlets
I watched this video when it first aired, but had forgotten about it. I just bought and used one of those Cramer kits in the shower I just finished and I agree, it's absolutely the best! I used color matched Mapei Mapesil T silicone and the results are amazing. You can do a great job, even without using the denatured alcohol. I used the square edged tool to fine tune the inside 3 way corners and they look perfect. Highly recommended!
