One of my all time favourite programmes, ever! It was a fascinating story but also a comedy gem, not least because of Simon. So many immortal lines, I think my favourite was, when comforting a distraught Phiippa, 'you know, he could have had a hunchback and still have been a nice guy.' 😂
There were two things that impressed me when I first watched that program. First, the arrogance and bad manners of the "professionals" from the university, second, Simon's good manners and kindness to Philippa when she was upset.
I first saw Simon in the Mighty Boosh playing an intellectual with a head that looked like a conker. Next time I saw him he was looking over Richard III's skeleton whilst a batshit crazy lady fawned over it. Quite the leap.
By the sounds of it they were going to initially be taking the piss out of the people who initiated the dig, and then had to get super serious about it when it turned out that the Ricardians were right. That's why, by the sounds of it, they were offering Simon the job, because Horrible Histories was a comedic history program. I actually thought that it was a really good documentary, as was the follow up, so it's a real shame that all they offered him after that was, by the sounds of it, a totally ridiculous program and a total waste of his talents. I, for one, wouldn't mind seeing him doing more historical documentaries
I don't think it is a shame Simon got out of Documentary making - the result is we have lots more of Simon doing Ghosts and writing and staring in blockbuster films - presenting documentaries would be (to me) a waste of this guys immense talents. But if you are super-into documentaries hosted by Simon - I suppose I have no chance in convincing you otherwise! ;-)
This shows how serious they really took the idea of finding him was. They were going to do a 3 day archeology comedy skit. Hope to find the church they were looking for anyways. On another note: I’ve seen where Philippe says that the university didn’t give her credit. I’ve watched the footage and the university had included her and the r3 society as part as the group that found him. They made made a point to mention her. So, she was given credit.
Later on in this episode, I wish that Richard had raised the fact that Simon Farnaby's character in Star Wars was called "Farns Monsbee", a hilariously half-assed anagram...
I remember watching this. My take, as a history graduate, was that his successors exaggerated the hunchback. These days we cant always tell people with scoliosis, so maybe it wasnt as obvious then. Who knows.
I once stood above King Richard III's resting place. We were looking at one of the flats that were built around the car park - well vice versa really. They were rubbish!
It's a shame that Philippa was so upset about Shakespeare being right. What a wonderful achievement though, to have been instrumental in recovering this brave, maligned king's bones and giving them a fitting final resting place in Leicester Cathedral
So he became an actual historian for a bit ...bet he kinda rubbed that in Mackenzie Crook's face! 2:50 Anyone catch that? Deserved more laughs unless you don't like ancient-king-bashing.
Simon (and all the people laughing), I wonder how you can make fun of Philippa's hunch (backed by thorough research) when research alone didn't get the historians and archeologists anywhere close to Philippa's location. And her disbelief regarding the "hunchback" also proved correct - it was a sideways scoliosis, barely visible...
Richardians are kooky? Really? No. They are mostly historians or hobbiest historians who have done their research and chosen not to believe Tudor propaganda. Especially now with the new evidence about the princes. The richardians were right all along
Only the Ricardians could be the living proof that time heals all wounds...well not richards, but it's always felt strange that they're swooning over a double child murderer who only had the crown for 2 years.
I recently watched the documentary called ‘the princes in the tower’ it presented evidence that the young princes survived but it’s still a mystery. I’d like to know the truth of the matter
Because she's a self absorbed kook, fair play for getting the society to fund part of the effort but she's been given far too much credit, the resting place has been public knowledge since the 80's and she's recently gone forth with practical slander to try and elevate herself above others.

The audible "hmmm" after she said she KNEW she was on the grave. Beautiful
Or an unlucky monk🤣

It’s a fascinating documentary, and my first thought was ..”How the hell did Simon land this gig?” Now I know. 👍
Where can you watch?
@@Heatherssix I watched it on TH-cam.
So Richard III had a hunch, and so did Phillipa
Thank you for this sir, have a great day 😂
Yeah did he! Bloody Simon and Garfunkle stealing our finds again......
Top reference.

What’s this archeology nonsense? That’s way off the mark sir

the best documentaries are always the ones about a subject that the team and presenter actually care about
But Simon himself admits in this clip that's not where he's at. He's an incredibly talented and accomplished writer and actor.
2:47 Philippa just had a hunch... pun intended?

That's why it's such a great documentary. Everything gets subverted. There's so much going on in it. Brilliant TV.
Later on in this episode, I wish that Richard had raised the fact that Simon Farnaby's character in Star Wars was called "Farns Monsbee", a hilariously half-assed anagram...
It seems fitting that someone from Horrible Histories was a part of something as big as this😂
Glad I found this. He sneered at Phillipa through the whole thing. Now suddenly he is rewriting his own story.
I love that fella, I'd watch him reading the phonebook
Haha same!

A fitting resting place would have been in the North where he was loved. ..not at the place where he was the victim of treachery…🤨🇬🇧
@@Ionabrodie69 fair enough! Where would you have picked? Leicester Cathedral is better than under a car park though ;)
I'm really hoping the phrase 'I made this!' was used at some point in this lovely conversation.
Great as the inept security guard in Paddington 2
Stop that unusually attractive nun
And the writer of it
I remember that whole thing, and I still take utter joy in the fact that it was all down to one obsessed fangirl's stubbornness. 🙂
Perfect face for comedy. Probably one of our best comic actors.
Anyone know who his first wife was and why they split?
They sent him there because they wanted to make a clown of the richard the 3rd society but they joke was on them.
this is part of what makes it one of the greatest documentaries ever!
Fantastically funny interview. Shame you didn’t have time to talk about his brilliant turn as Sam Chatwin in Alan Partridge
Do you mean This Time? He's hilarious in it. Partridge was inspired by his run.
But "Never had a hump, and my arm was alright"?? :)
Even as a kid I found it absurd how quickly that line became obsolete
So he became an actual historian for a bit
...bet he kinda rubbed that in Mackenzie Crook's face!

A man of off Ghosts talking about a Skellington….soon be Halloween 👻
A nan who co-wrote and starred in Ghosts amongst other things.

But one doesn't get a hunchback from scoliosis. They're just a tad lopsided. I should know, I have it. 😂
that's the point, he didn't have a hunch but he had something that could be exaggerated into a hunch by future generations.
She had a hunch.......badum tishhhh
that's today's television feast
“Go on then, you’re through to the afterlife”
haha almost said 'the bone that I found'

There is a very good possibility that they survived Richard but not his usurper!

👏👏👏
"Historical digs/comedy expert? Get me Tony Robinson!"
"We've got Tony Robinson at home!"
Tony Robinson at home:
Tony Robinson wishes he was Simon Farnaby.
why take the piss out of Philippa Langley - the 'mastermind' behind the dig - when she was fucking right 😡
