Canon went large-sensor with the C100/300/500/700 range, leaving the small-sensor ILC market wide open. Shame there was never any lens adapter to put their VL and XL range of lenses in front of the Pentax Q or Nikon 1 cameras.
@@pacoreguenga I use a Shogun. The audio has to go through analog inputs though. Ausio embedded in the SDI is the difference between the XL-H1 and the XL-H1s
I used this camera in college when it was new... I still have it... don't use it as much now as the Hard disk media is so much easier and faster to work with in my new cameras... however this camera still holds up... just wish it took SD cards rather than HDV tapes now days....
Have you tried it with an external recorder, such as an Atomos Shogun or Blackmagic Design Video Assist? Would love to hear how it holds up - thinking about getting a secondhand one for Behind Scenes production.
HI, then what's the SD card port for? I bought my Canon XL H1 HD Camcorder in 2007. I recently dusted it off and noticed the SD card port on the hand-held panel. So, am I able to shoot HD directly to the card?
@@InnerAttainmentTV unfortunately no... that SD card is for memory settings in your camera you would like to keep and store. It also serves as the base for storing stills if for some reason you needed to take them. It's really a shame they didn't make an upgraded model of this camera. It's versatility was amazing... now you can get alot of its features in newer cameras but they are extremely expensive... just as this one was back in the day. I paid 2600$ for mine used... but my college had 3 of them at the time they were new and they cost about 8 grand then. Hope some of this info helps. 😁
@@PiDsPagePrototypes sorry for the delay on this response. I'm just now seeing this... anyways yes I used Blackmagic Design via SDI output to capture live 422 Pro Res video. It grabbed some great raw footage that way that imported through a converter into the mounted laptop I had on my rig that also served as a monitor. I loved the way it looked as I was able to literally manually adjust my settings while filming. Unfortunately I was only able to do this in my studio as the rig was just too Big and intuitive to take out into the field. But it worked great for studio and green screen work. Especially with the wide angle lens! But I have since moved on and now my XLH1 sits in a closet inside its transport Bag like an old sports veteran at the end of his career sitting at the end of the bench saying "I'm here if you need me!" 🤣 yeah kinda corny but exactly why I don't think I'll ever let it go. Hahahaha! LBS!
@@HQLBvideo Since typing that, an ex-demo XL-H1 popped up for sale near me, for AU$800, and I grabbed it as I already had suitable gear to match it from my XL-1. I hook it up to an Atomos Shogun to record - a little disappointing the XL-H1 SDI doesn't have audio embedded (the XL-H1s does) - I use analog out of camera in to the XLR in on the Shogun. From the Shogun I can feed the HDMI out in to an h.264 encoder for live streaming, etc. I'm adding a LANC zoom/focus controller, as for HD productions, it's a really good rig on a good tripod for local sports and drag racing :)
Hello Canon, I know this video is years old, But I am wondering was the ACTUAL film ever released, or is this the film? I am thinking of using this camera to shoot a TV series on travel!
Did you edit your footage in Final Cut Pro or Express? What export settings should you set in order to get the highest quality from your videos? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
For highest quality you should use the native format that your camera shoots in. For example if your camera is recording HDV, you should export/render your video in HDV.
Carlo Trevisan depends on the dslr. I like it more than dslr for ergonomics but the cinematic quality of a full frame sensor dslr such as the canon 5d mark 3 is a good bit better. I still love this camera though!
Dennis Sacksith open the iris as much as needed in low light and slow the shutter speed to allow more light. if you're getting to much noise in low light you probably have the gain set to high.
LONGING FOR FREEDOM is a 90 minute indie feature filmed with a Canon XL. Please visit my channel and have a look at the trailer and - if you like - let me know what you think. Thanks,

You would not believe how many people that ive talked to that use these cameras don't DE-INTERLACE their video...
I think it's about time for a SDXC/SDHC version of this camera. XLH2 anyone?
you can use it with an old Atomos Blade SDI and record Prores or raw from it.

i like the Jurassic park sound track at the end lol
Easy to use, but film looks much better for a feature. More control of the light and deep of field!
I have. I haven't even scratched the surface but the fun I'll have trying!

Oh, btw ,if you use a miniDV camera, when you capture the footage you have to set the capture settings at HDV or if is a StandardDef. camera DV .
Is it right that this camera is not produced enymore? Ive hurt it from a company in holland (Konijneberg) Please tell me!
Hello the XLH1A have the same quality on video?
yes but lacks SDI output
Canon should launch this model with at least 4k quality and with a memory card!
Nice...0:41-1:18 Music Please ?

Are there any videos of the xh a1?
I have this camera, I have a canon dslr 60d and I have a red and I just really still love this camera! for ergonomics it's my favourite.
Hey hey nice camera. Does the 1080i deinterlace automatically?
did you guys use a 35mm adapter on this?
cool is it havey how is the sound

It did have an SD card slot, but only for presets and photos...no video.
