    Things I’d love to see personally:
    - Your coffee travel setup (if you have one)
    - And maybe, the way you pack for travel?
    - How you research cafes to check out
    - Thoughts on what each destination does best
    - Thoughts on the general coffee culture in that city

      Thanks for the excellent videos. I don’t watch many other coffee presenters because your vids are bot educational and so relaxing, I’m afraid everyone else will be shouting at me.

    Indonesian here, interesting to see hear your view of the indonesian coffee market. Yes, the common coffee trend in here goes more to the sweeter side. We kind of have a sweet tooth. Interesting note, so many people here use the ROK to pull the espresso for making the Kopi Susu.
    The single origins are definitely around, just not as common.

    • @TheWeepingMan
      @TheWeepingMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not that actual specialty doesn't exist. I can get fairly decent, recently-roasted 250g beans at... roughly 9 USD, I think. Selection is limited to only Indonesian origins of course, and I'm not sure how specific they are, but it's still fairly nice. Cheap burr grinder is 10~ USD, if you drink it traditionally you probably won't need french press (cheap ones can be as low as 10~ USD too if you're lucky).
      Also, many stores has began to carry whole coffee beans, as opposed to pre-ground. And I don't mean big store - I mean independent convenience store, small supermarket, that sort of thing. Sure, they are all... not the best, but the fact they do it at all is a surprise. They usually never bother.
      You can buy actual, brewed specialty coffee, but at 1> USD per cup imo it's generally not worth it, unless you want to try something new or you drink for socialization.

    • @hanselsihotang
      @hanselsihotang 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@TheWeepingMan man, I think even 9 USD per 250gr is a bit too much for single origin coffee here.
      I often buy some roasted specialty-coffee beans from online shops and cafe, they usually sells for about 4-7 USD per 250gr pack for decent ones like Arabica Sidikalang or Toraja, and even cheaper for robusta. The only beans that I think can reach above 9USD are probably Wine coffee, Luwak coffee and some other purposely process-modified coffee.

    • @Fatbutnotflat
      @Fatbutnotflat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheWeepingMan I think you're looking at the wrong place, there is a lot of great specialty place already in jkt/bdg and also a lot of great roasters. They charge more though, 18USD+ per 250g probably.

    • @TheWeepingMan
      @TheWeepingMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, 7 USD-ish. I still use the old rule of thumb where 10k IDR = 1 USD, sigh. I am not on Java unfortunately, but it's nice to know beans are also cheaper there.
      Probably can't buy lot of 'em regardless, I prefer freshly-roasted beans :p

    • @hanselsihotang
      @hanselsihotang 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheWeepingMan yeah, many stuffs will be cheaper in Java because most things would be shipped there first. But, where do you live? I think most main islands have their own specialty coffee, oftentimes multiple of them. Surely they should be cheaper on its source than in Java, aren't they?
      Sometimes if you're lucky and try hard enough, you may find some good coffee from less recognized origins. I.e in North Sumatera the main sells are probably Mandheling and Sidikalang. But coffee from Samosir tastes nice too.

Interesting to hear your thoughts about Jakarta and didn't realise how different the accessibility for coffee is back home and here in the UK (currently studying here), I miss being able to order coffee with gojek/grab and have it by my door step in less than an hour.

    Indonesian here. Commonly, in order to stay on business, almost all coffee shops in Indonesia rely on ice milk-based coffee beverage to stay in business. Fortunately, for small coffee shops, they always exploring with local coffee beans and give coffee lovers a wide-range of single origin coffee, especially pour over or filter (V60). For this typical coffee shops, a customer like me, I can learn more about coffee, from farming to brewing stage, which is I love learning than come, order and sitting for about an hour in a big busy coffee shop.
    Interesting enough, our coffee culture has another side story and I guess it is particular to Indonesia. Our prime time visiting a coffee shop is after work around 5-6pm, having a chat with, sometimes, random people, sharing interest and idea. And quite often, an informal meeting in a coffee shop opens up new community or even new business. I guess that is the beauty of Indonesian Coffee Shop.
    Hope You will be back again to Indonesia, and try our range of coffee from big to small player here. Last and foremost, thanks for visiting Indonesia. Cheers Mate!!!

      Same. I started out with instant coffee at first, and then moved to a Drip Brewer, then French Press, and finally settled for a Moka Pot. There's nothing wrong with putting milk and sugar in coffee though. I usually put a shotglass of milk and a teaspoon of sugar in my coffee just to cut back the intensity of a Moka Pot brew.

    One thing about Indonesian coffee scene that I think you wont find anywhere else is that we use ROK Presso for commercial use. And by commercial I mean we torture it to its limit. And there are so many local custom workshops that make Upgrade Kit for your ROK Presso such as custom porta, metal chamber and shower screen, etc etc.
    That's one thing I love about coffee in Indonesia. You'll find so many micro coffeeshop with very minimalist setup but yet people still come and gather to have good time with friends and a cup of a good, humble coffee.

    - What does coffee mean to people in different parts of the world? Is it more about the ceremony and science, or simply just a morning caffeine hit?
    - With the above in mind, what else could boost coffee culture in cities you visit, where perhaps it isn’t as strong as the likes of London
    - It would also be interesting to learn about the backgrounds of baristas in cafes and where their passion for coffee originated. Particularly in the likes of Jakarta and Saudi
    - Any unfamiliar modern quirks being adopted in the coffee world

    I am a big fan of "kopi tubruk" which I personally think is the ultimate and most simple way of making coffee. Just yesterday a colleague of mine and I stopped by a place in Jakarta called "Bakoel Koffie" in center Jakarta (Koffie is the Dutch spelling for coffee), where they served me a most amazing tubruk made from Timor coffee. They roast all their coffee themselves. A well made tubruk has a lot of body, the perfect cup bringing out all the flavors available in a coffee without changing it by any particular way of preparing your coffee. Tubruk grind is similar to Turkish, so very fine though a bit courser as true Turkish, finer as espresso though. Any medium or finer grind can make a nice tubruk, but finer grinds are preferred. After pouring your near boiling water on the ground coffee in your cup let it steep, then add sugar if you want (no milk), stir and wait for the grounds to have settled in the bottom of your cup. Blow the top of your cup (to have any ground coffee still present in the "crema" sink down as well) and enjoy.

    JAKARTA - I lived in JKT / Indonesia for many years - most of the locals drink coffee that tends to be very acidic. Filtered through a large SIV made from cheesecloth.. The SUSU - is condensed sweet milk from a can- very thick and very sweet. (too sweet for my taste similar to can 'leche' is South/ Central America - both words mean 'milk' but different than a container of whole milk per se) Over the last several years, more coffee shops opened - to compete with Starbucks and offer coffee from machines and some franchises offer a set-up where the operator actually roast the beans on the premises. (sometimes there can be inconsistencies through) Indonesia does offer a fine selection of coffee & beans, if you had the time to go to one of the large supermarkets, you can buy coffee ground or beans from many of the wonderful locations/coffee plantations. I just came across your videos and subscribed. Very well done. cheers

    Interesting to hear your observations. I'm from Malaysia, so I think in terms of coffee culture,we're probably alike in some ways. We don't have the "kopi susu" type thing here, but the closest to it that we have here would probably be the Taiwanese boba tea milk stuff. I gotta give the Indonesians props though for not being shy to show you what is trending over there, and I love that you try to put some thought into why such a thing makes sense there. Not something that most purists/traditionalists would consider "real coffee experience" (if such a thing exists), but your open-minded approach is very refreshing.

    Honestly, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I think keeping things short and to the point really works. I normally dislike travel vlogs because they tend to be long and superfluous. I’d love to hear more about a given city’s coffee culture-unique drinks, when and where people drink coffee, etc.-and, if relevant, visits to notable cafes or roasteries.
    On a side note, I ordered some coffee from Square Mile (I live in the US!). Delicious! Worth the effort (and the exchange rate).

    Would love to see more videos like this. Often finding myself wondering what other scenes are like compared to where I live (Berlin).
    Tried some Square Mile Red Brick the other week for the first time at Companion Coffee. it was 🤔a little less experimental than I imagined. It's all in the name 'red brick', not sure why I didn't think it through! :) Hope to see more videos, thanks for making these. I really enjoy watching.

      I hope you enjoyed Red Brick - it is our staple espresso blend, and so designed to be as enjoyable as possible to as many people as possible while still (hopefully) being interesting. For something more experimental we have Sweet Shop, a far sillier blend all around.

    Oh yes milk and coffee is very much love here. Part of the culture milk coffee = Kopi susu, is part ground coffee and condensed milk or coffee + milk + sugar. Morning coffee, afternoon coffee (usually with fried banana or other snack). Anyway, love you video! Thank you for coming to my city. I would love to see more of this type of video: visiting countries and try their local coffee or how the local brew. 🙏

    Definitely need you to come back! Would love to hear your thoughts on the unique duality Indonesia possesses - it's one of the world's biggest coffee producers while at the same time it's starting to make its mark on the world stage (an Indonesian came 4th in the 2019 WBC). I may be wrong but not many coffee producing countries enjoy this kind of privilege.

    I hope the next time you visit Indonesia, you have the time visit the neighboring cities like Bandung, Bogor, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and maybe even check out some of the coffee plantations that are spread across the country and take a peek of our beautiful landscapes.

    I live in Singapore, which is also in the Southeast Asia region. The local coffee here, aside from having sugar and milk added,is also roasted differently. Not sure if it’s the same as in Indonesia, but as the type of beans we get here are different, it’s usually roasted in butter and sugar till dark. Thus the body is a lot heavier and therefore requires the milk and sugar. Pretty interesting to note the difference in taste as I’ve switched to drinking single origin coffees and suddenly noticed this cultural difference. You could look it up, it’s called the Nanyang style coffee

    So you're going to Portland. I used to live there, and still visit every once in a while. My absolute must-visit roaster there on every journey, is Water Avenue Coffee. They are right next door to Clive Coffee, and walking distance from Coava. These days, Stumptown is only interesting from a volume perspective.

    First of all welcome to Indonesia, and sory for bad traffic (it's kind of problem that Jakarta face to long), but nice to hear that you have a great trip. The trend of Indonesia coffee now it's milk coffee (kopi susu) basic that get some variation (boba it's trending now), but maybe if you stay longer you can find so many great coffee because Indonesia have a lot of great Bean's, hope you can back and explore more. Always like you're content and love from Indonesia

    Jakartan here, 5:20 it is indeed what your vision is, well at least for me. Back then i drink only milky sweet coffee stuff when the craze about coffee started to take off in here. Then i started chasing that perfection, started to search for espresso perfection, build a home barista setup, watch youtube coffee videos like yours, upgrading my gears until i now have a big flat burrs grinder and a NS commercial machine. Trying single origin for espresso, trying various roasting profile for espresso. Now i want to learn about roasting but it seems whole other different beasts. I lost my time so much in this chase of a better coffee 😂
    I’m glad you are taken care of in here, just jealous i didn’t know that you were here, would like to meet.
    Btw about that traffic condition, i bet you’re here on a weekend ?, the traffic is so much different here on a week days 😁

  • @jawa011

    Found out a trick for Dolce Gusto. You put in the capsule, start the machine for couple of seconds so the water enters the capsule but doesnt start dripping. then leave it like that for 15 seconds. When you start it again, the extraction is longer, which makes a better espresso in the end.
