I am undone. I am spell bound. I am a new person. Battle's Sophie is one of the most gorgeous pieces of vocal music making ever. Period. Hands down. What in all hell?????
Lohengrin O agreed, truly exceptional. Yes I'd never heard it before I found this recently. As I say, I love the recording of Bonney/graham mentioned above too.
I don't know if any Sophie can live up to this. Battle is perfection in the high and light Strauss roles (Her Zdenka? Amazing.) My contemporary favorite is Erin Morley.
Yes I agree and her Zdenka is the best that I've ever heard yet.. I have the whole Arabella with her as Zdenka from 1983 and I listen to it with radiance :)
I was lucky enough to see them either that year or the previous year. They were incredible. And I agree that currently Erin Morley is the best Sophie around
Kathleen Battle's Sophie is without equal. If you want to read the New York Times review, here it is: www.nytimes.com/1985/09/29/arts/opera-rosenkavalier-at-the-met.html

I was lucky enough to see them live! Incredible!
Fabulous spin and dome and Troyanos like butter. Both 2 of the most fantastic musicians of the 20th century
A great Strauss duet. This is a treasured live recording Battle sounds like a child angel. I would be interested in the rest of it for sure.

So glad you enjoyed and that I could bring you it - what this channel is all about. She is incredible I agree.
You mean, what in all HEAVEN! Hers is a celestial, heavenly, Divine voice.
This is rare isnt it? She is GORGEOUS... probably the vocally most Gorgeous Sophie ever...

Sublime , Divino. Che voci stupende
Her highest notes are so full and silvery. Swoon.
We are all praising Battle, but Troyanos here is fantastic.

I agree. Morley is up there. Popp is my favorite, but I was lucky enough to see these 2 in 1985!

As perfect as it gets
And the tempo? Nobody would ever attempt this. They both knew how special this moment was and milked it.
lotte lehmann said the best is anneliese rothenberger
Indeed for the 1950’s 1960’s maybe. But there have been many.
