- It's the jewel in the Fiji surfing crown and on this day it was enormous and pristine... light offshore winds with a solid groundswell.. close to 3 metres with an 18 second period. Cloudy was thundering.
We were lucky enough to be there to watch the pro show as they all flew in for a chance to tackle Cloudy at her best.
Some of the gladiators in the pit this day included local legend Che Slater, alongside the big names - Nathan Florence, Laura Enever, the Coffin brothers, Conner and Parker, Billy Kemper and more...
Got dragged across the reef there in 2002, thanks for showing the good, the bad and the wipeouts!

I used to bodysurf and boogie board bigger waves than this video shows but not as powerful. This wave is one of the most heaviest in the world. I've owned one surfboard but never got good at it because I spent most of my time racing sailboats and when I finally got a surfboard, I was about 16 which put me way behind all of my friends that surfed.
Its never too late my friend. Its not abnout how good you are, but how much enjoyment you get from it
Were they getting towed in that day?
For the couple hours we were there everybody was paddling in. 💪

Thanks for taking me to the big surf. It was 1967 in Redondo Beach California. This is the best video I could find - th-cam.com/video/ZpaJpFVMDas/w-d-xo.html - This is not that day. The waves were so big we had to walk on top of the breakwater wall, scamper down the rock, and throw our boards into the water to paddle out between sets. Somehow I lived that day, but one guy didn't, really sad. In high school my nickname was On-The-nose. I loved surfing more than breathing. That was 57 years ago. Thanks for taking me on the ride.

I believe the swell in 2018 might have been bigger, nevertheless this swell was still powerful and for most who caught a wave that day it was their “wave of a lifetime”

That is a tricky one. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll try leaving some without the slow mo next time but filming from a small inflatable dinghy means it’s almost impossible not to have jittery images so the SM helps.
Ahh, the magic of editing where every surfer appears in the same spot on the wave, and we see nothing except what surf editing has been doing since day one. Most of you have come a long way NOT !!
