    OK, so according to a lot of folks, my “front bow” and “back bow” terms are REVERSED! Well, that’s how they taught me in homeschool. Oh well. Loosening the rod pulls the neck AWAY from the strings, tightening the rod brings it TOWARDS the strings. Call that whatever ya want!

    • @sauerkrautoneverything7807
      @sauerkrautoneverything7807 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I downloaded an image as a reference because you're right, depending on where you read how to adjust your truss rod, the same term can mean the exact opposite thing.

    • @icenic_wolf
      @icenic_wolf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I really prefer the "arch your back" versus "slouch" for explaining which direction the neck is bending. It's a lot more intuitive than concave vs convex to most people.

    • @sauerkrautoneverything7807
      @sauerkrautoneverything7807 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@icenic_wolf Slouch and arch makes a lot of sense. However, we're on the internet, and someone will confuse those terms, and create an group of people with the opposite perspective. Lol, can't win.
      That's why I use a picture that works for me that I saved on my computer incase I forget.

      Homeschool HAHA - I wish I was homeschooled. Anyways, someone back in the 80's told me, "Tighten for bow, loosen for warp" and it stuck with me ever since. I also did setups for a local Music-Go-Round franchise store.

      This is why I absolutely love tune-o-matic bridges on non trem guitars. Nine fact, I would never buy any non trem guitar without a tune-o-matic bridge. It is just so much easier adjusting the action with just 2 screws vs messing around with each string and messing up the radius.

    My best playing guitar is my cheapy "junk" Jackson. Why? Because I wasn't scared to wreck it learning to set it up myself. My more pricier LTD, Ibanez always came back from "techs" feeling terrible. Practice on a cheapy and you might be surprised!

    Ben........I'm 65 and I started playing when I was 11 or 12. I played with many other musicians in many bands over the years........one of them, since high school, became a famous and well known metal front man (still best buddies). All I gotta say is, even on my best day I couldn't come close to you bud. With that said (on top of it all), a bad car accident and a broken neck set me back even further (hand wise).......Regardless, I grabbed up my guitars again (good therapy) and your videos & teachings are helping me gain back what I lost in leaps & bounds........thanks amigo'......much appreciated

    My most irreplaceable/best playing guitar is a 1993 ESP KH-2 with serial #032. The only thing I don't love about it is the 81s, but I haven't had the heart to DiMarzio it.
    I really want a 20th anniversary JP Music Man, and I wanted to play a Majesty before pulling the trigger. Reasons. So I went to a local guitar store on Friday and picked up the 20th Anniversary EBMM Majesty with the gold hardware accents. My ESP has been hiding in it's case for the past 6 months, but I busted it out when I got home from the Majesty experience....and to my absolute amazement, my ESP felt better without question. By taking a little vacation from it, I was floored by just how incredible of a build that #32 is.
    I've had half a dozen folks try and fenagle it their way, but that's just not gonna happen. It was already sold once by an idiot....to me....and I'm gonna end that trend. I've had it since 1999, so it's not going anywhere.
    I still want that 20th anniversary JP6 though. I'm a sucker for a BFR, and don't have one yet. After that I need a Suhr Modern so I can be part of the cool kids club like Unkey B and Andy Woodshed.

    This is the outmost eye opening video about guitar works on nut, neck and string holder! Have never seen and heard more useful, precise and understandable words to understand the function of the parts (and why it didn't even work, when getting the guitar back from shop adjustment, it didn't work)!!! It seems, that even "pros" don't understand all the connection of the sum of the basic parts?! I learned to understand the combination of the "adjustment system", how I will call it.

    My best playing stock guitar is a PRS Custom 24 which I bought new in 2004. It is the guitar which “taught me” about the importance of nut action. I tried a couple Suhr guitars some years ago, which didn’t have the perfect nut setup my custom 24 has always had. Years after, I bought a nut files set, which I now use on newly acquired guitars and friends’ guitars when they ask me to set them up. The nut is the real game changer of a guitar setup. If you’re lucky enough, you can buy a fine guitar which someone feels “hard to play and buzzing” at a lower price, set the nut up and make it play like butter without any buzz (happened to me with a wonderful 2013 Les Paul)

    Great vid, Ben! Very down to earth!!
    For measurement geeks... Neck relief: capo at 1st fret, fret at body joint (17th fret is common) and look for 0.010"-0.014" gap at around fret 7, 0.012" is a common "out the door" setting. Pickup height starting point is generally about 1/8" & flavor to taste from there.
    Again, great video, Ben!!! Keep 'em coming!!

    My best playing guitar is my 1978 Vantage 700VP. Bought it in '93 and it's been my main ever since.

    Man, I've been the guy to know the important things about guitars (I've fixed my Dads' guitar that he's given up on that sat in it's case for like a decade and he taught me how to build an amplifier) of the town and I'm currently building a guitar of my own. I do not regret spending a buttload of internet bandwidth on this video. Your tips (and entertainment value) are very much appreciated.

    Great timing! Just moved two of my electrics to the UK and realised they are in need of a setup. Cheers, Ben!

    Great video. Suhr are great guitars. That Tone Talk episode with John is really interesting. I love his quote regarding the test for checking the nut "you can have almost nothing as long as you have something"

    While watching the vid I finally got the courage to play around with the Truss rod on my Fender Player Strat(it came with 09s and i swapped them to 08s). After doing that and playing a bit with the action and intonation, It feels nicer and less buzzier. Thanks mate.

    As always, brilliant noodling, wisdom, solid advice and, on occasion, something funny enough make me snort laugh hard enough I had to change my shirt. My Fender scale lifestyle has changed to 9.5/44 as I wind up on projects going back and forth to Gibby land and find the string tension almost identical.
    Heading to The Floyd vid as I’m sure there’s some data I need. Thanks bunches for your time as always.

    Dude you are Awesome, a few years back before this video I was all over TH-cam trying to figure out how I can have the relief I need in my neck, everything was confusing it was just a bunch of you need this you need feeler gauges I bought a straight edge I broke a truss rod in the process, but after all that trial and error I know how to have the perfect setup for myself 😂😂 I wish you would have made this video a few years back lol keep up the good work Uncle Ben
