@@paulinevince6219 They may have used it in Penny Dreadful but the song itself is centuries old. I first found it in a book of music put out by Joan Baez back in the 60s.
The tone you sing this in sounds far less accusatory and more... Gentle scolding. Like, "Why are you doing this to yourself? I love you enough to not want here."
Indeed! The full song this version is based upon is about a girl's dead lover telling her to move on. Goes to show how good the performance is when you get the message through sheer emotion with only half the lyrics. Edit: Small correction, the original is about a guy morning his dead girlfriend, I switched those up. Though there is a version with the genders swapped as described above.
The more I listen to it, the *earlier* the emotional impact hits. On the surface: the first two verses are intro, and after that is when it gets romantic, right? But then the second half of the second verse hits you. And then of course, the way the first half of that verse leads into that part. Each line in its own way. But then you start to appreciate that first verse... A ghost's initial reaction to being roused is something like your reaction when your alarm goes off twenty minutes too early: "Whaaaaaat? Whyyy? Oh. It's *you.* Then the second verse is, like, as she has her first cup of coffee. Still creepy -- more so, in the last line -- but, in a caring way. "You know this is dangerous for you, right? You don't really want to come join me, not *quite* yet?" And only after that, it grows less monotone, more musical, and more like your typical ballad. Those parts are good too, but post-climactic.
My PTSD use to keep me awake at night till I found this song! Then I found more of your music and ever since I can sleep at night now! Your voice helps the trauma I deal with from a life of war. So ty for being part my recovery ❤❤❤❤

I completely understand how hard that battle is and what she must be going through. It took me a really long time to find my confidence after a lot of insufferable bullying.
