This song is associated with the end of the Soviet Union and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. The Scorpions played The Soviet Union in 1988 and 1989. On their 1989 visit, they noticed big changes in just a year "Winds of change".

What gets lost during this time is the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests where we actually saw millions of Chinese students stand up for democracy and human rights. No one knows how many people were murdered by the Chinese military when they cracked down but generations of younger Chinese people under 35 have no clue what their government did since the internet is censored. When push comes to shove the Chinese government is no different then the old Soviet Union or North Korea they are communist and every bit as controlling and brutal with their "re-education camps".

That song still touches my heart. Thanks for this.

Born in 1961, the year the wall was build. Always taught "beware of the evil from the east", only to find out 40 years later that there was no evil, only people that where taught otherwise. Now 20 years after that event try to teach my grandchildren one lesson for life: "Walls don´t protect, they divide." There are no races, there are only humans.
Remember the days a US President want´s to build a wall at the mexican border and let the mexicans pay for it? This days the mexicans would be happy to finance the wall to keep away the american covid people of texas and arizona away from mexico.

It’s sad because we had such hope for the future back then. There was so much less racial division… divisions in general of all kinds. I wish musicians and stars would do the uplifting, unifying kind of songs and concerts like they used to. I think it would make a difference culturally for our younger generation, and everyone actually.

So very true. I was at The Scorpions gig at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in '99. It was a concert to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. During this song all these denim and leather clad, hairy-arsed, heavy rock fans, many of whom were former East Germans, were openly crying and hugging each other. That night we really did feel like brothers and we felt we could change the world. Sometimes, these days, I feel so sad and angry about where we ended up. I do wish we could rekindle the feeling we had that night.

When Scorpions were in Russia for the Moscow Peace Festival 1989, Klaus Meine was impacted by the ending of the Cold War and being inspired by all those hundreds of thousands of kids who came to the show and the feeling of unity. Ironically, Klaus wrote this song just months before the wall came down thus making it sort of the theme song of that event, even though it wasn't directly associated with it, as many have been led to believe. It's a nice fairy tale though. Klaus is a very sensitive, beautiful person who feels things deeply. You have to also realize that he grew up in West Germany near the Wall. It's very important lyrics.
In Europe, it means something very heavy duty in that they have grown up with oppression and stories of that sort of thing, whereas here in the States, while we love the song, the impact isn't as meaningful.
When they start the song, they always say (not a quote), that their ancestors came with guns, they (Scorpions) come with guitars. Wish I could remember that quote.

It then transitioned to hope the fall of the Berlin Wall (reunification of Germany), the Pope visiting the USSR, Nelson Mandela in South Africa, and the meeting of President George Herbert Walker Bush with Mikhel Gorbachev of the USSR. (Sorry about the spelling) It was a strange time to be growing up in, you don't realize that history is in the making right in front of your eyes.

It's hard for people who didn't live though the Cold War to understand. It is in many ways how our grand parents would discuss the Great Depression and we couldn't understand. For us the Great Depression was a hard period of time. But for those who lived though it the Depression was going to last the rest of their lives. They were always going to be poor. They were always going to be one illness or one accident away from losing everything and dying of starvation.
The same is true for the Cold War. We didn't just think; we knew one day very soon, some incident or some accident would cause either the U.S. or U.S.S.R. to launch their missiles, the other side would reply and on that day the human race would die. PERIOD. We had no illusion of survival like our parents in the 50's and 60's. We were not taught "Duck and Cover." We were only taught to hope you are incinerated by an initial blast rather than wondering through the rubble blind with 3rd degree burns over your body until you died.
And the end of the Cold War was not all celebration either. It was a very scary time. We'd been taught that the other side isn't just going to roll over and die. Before they go down they'll launch their missile knowing it is the end of everything because that is how insane and crazy they are. To our surprise that did not happen. But like the end of the Depression the end of the Cold War was the end of an era which included an existential threat to our very lives. And like us with the Great Depression it is hard for those who did not live though the Cold War to appreciate the significance of its end.

Our world has been through so much. When I was your age, our threat was nuclear war. Still is but on a smaller scale since the agreement to reduce arms. When they ended the Cold War and brought down the Berlin Wall, we learned that if we are to survive we must strive for democracy, freedom, equality, environment protection … live like brothers. And although we disagreed, it was civil, it was negotiated, it was just. But now, I can see we’ve learned nothing from our past. 30 years ago I remember we had hope in our hearts, now hate dominates. It took only one man, just like it did in Germany, with Hitler. This song used to be inspirational, now it’s an anthem for what we lost, once again.

After the end of the cold war and former Soviet satellite states become independent and more democratic, I had the dream that the world would become a better place. But enemies are made for a $ to rule over the "powerless" (I use this word on purpose, but we,the people everywhere, are not powerless, we give our power away). Nothing really changed, it got even worse. We all, the ordinary people and artists, have to use and raise our voice for those who are unheard to make the wind of change a storm, blowing away the atrocities of our time and be friends instead of foes we don't know.

Me hearing this song and watching you to fairly cool people react to it makes me a little happy and a lot sad. I am old, I thought I'd be long dead by now but seeing your reaction and comments throughout this song is a clear illustration on how really bad things happen in the world... a complete lack of perspective and history.
First off this song is a heartfelt and very REAL celebration of the unofficial but quickly followed official end of the Cold War by a band that is from west Germany and specifically West Berlin. How anyone on the planet can be so "socially educated/indoctrinated by the media and the very few" but be completely unaware of even a smidgen of the real world just a few decades ago is shocking.
Here's the deal, if you were alive during the Cold War and lived anywhere in a metropolitan area of the US, the EU, the UK, or for that matter anywhere in the world you lived under the very real, very present, very clear and present threat of certain death at any moment best case... worst case you'd be sifting through the rubble in the horror show and breakdown of civilization in a poisonous stone age world of savagery a lot like Mad Max afterwards. The number of times the world literally almost came to a horrific end during my own lifetime was shocking.
My own particular generation both in the free world and in the USSR got a clue just a little bit and through sheer will power the massive race to the end of the world just stopped. Fear of "the other" no longer worked as a way to keep the masses supporting the delusion that propped it all up. Too bad SOMEHOW the people my generation would consider cavemen like thugs, goons, and buffoons along with the help of quite a few psychopaths and useful idiots has just decided to replay the entire recipe of fear and blame of "the other" to build a repressive order that nobody seems aware they can ignore and opt out of at this point.
You guys listen to enough 80's music to wake up...
maybe take a listen to Judas Priest Electric Eye as a start, that one's pretty clear and compare the lyrics to what you voluntarily submit to and way worse today. Then maybe start listening to Iron Maiden, Tesla, and a bunch of other 80's music and reinterpret what they are talking about.
Wanna know why 60's, '70s, '80's music is great? You'll note that it was saying exactly opposite of what the TV (that would be the internet now), The government stooges, and "the man" was shoving down your throat. How come they seem the same today? We'll gee, that would be easy to figure out wouldn't it. Wanna know who the big bad enemy is today? Well do a quick run down of whoever you "hate" and are supposed to be scared of... "the other", whoever you think is absolute evil based on who you are listening to... a giant trick to distract you from the corrupt fools put in charge of the place. They certainly don't want the finger put on them...

      @TheSwissChalet 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with everything you said except 80s music. It was projecting a generally positive message UNTIL 1984, when all the sudden it started promoting adultery, illicit drugs, tearing down traditions, anti-marriage, anti-personal responsibility, women becoming aggressive and independent, etc. 1984…yep…almost like it was “predicted”. Lol.

When I was in high school in the 1970's a neighbor hosted an exchange student from East Germany. The Berlin Wall still existed. She was utterly amazed that they could literally take her shopping and to restaurants all over the city or even into a different US state without having to stop at checkpoints to show "identification papers". That's what East Germany and West Germany was like after World War II. Divided. No going anywhere without showing "papers", no crossing the East/West border to visit family or friends without government permission. I was actually surprised the East German government gave this teenage student permission to spend a few months going to school in the US. At any rate, this is a great song by the Scorpions, thanks for reacting!

This was during the Cold War. I was stationed in Germany and have lived there for 20 years. I have family there. It was very sad to hear of all the people that have died trying to get into West Germany at the time. As a military guy, we could see the border but were always instructed not to say or make any gestures towards the East German guards. In the week or so of the wall coming down, there were people still dying trying to escape. Many years later as I was staying with family over there I had the chance to go to Checkpoint Charlie. They have a museum where you can go in and see all the different ways people tried to escape. The truly amazing part, there is a restaurant in Berlin that used to be a tv tower. It actually rotates 360 degrees giving you a great view of Berlin. We had gone up there to eat and as you look out the windows you could see the line between East and West. I wasn't a real line but you could see where all the newer buildings stand and where all the old East German buildings stand. It's gotten better over the years but seeing the difference was heartbreaking.

This wasn't Desert Storm. This was November 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell. I was stationed then in Germany (76th US Army Band). I had some friends in the 298th US Army Band (Berlin), who were partying on that wall with the students and citizens when it came down. A great feeling of relief and progress... at the time. They were like the ultimate baddies cos everything was black n white to me as a child. As I grew older I understood the value of hope n what it means to hope for the future. One which is better than our own for our children. I always cry by the end now cos I can empathize with those who waiting to be free, waiting to realise that hope. Thanks for the reaction guys. Hi guys, when you not afraid of very fast and hard metal/heavy metal/speed metal/power metal, just give "Accept" a try. A german Metal Band
from the early '70s till today but with frequent separations and reunions. My absolute favorite Band combo is with the front singer Udo Dirkschneider.
He has a absolute unique voice and i love all the Songs, sung by him. Udo Dirkschneider had a own band during the separations from Accept.
His band named U.D.O. and they had also a few world famous songs. Following Songs you should check out:
    Accept Songs:
    - Metal Heart
    - Princess of the Dawn
    - Fast as a Shark
    - Breaker
    - Restless and Wild
    - Balls to the Wall
    - Burning
    - London Leather Boys
    U.D.O. Songs:
    - Animal House
    - They Want War
    - Warrior
    - Mean Machine
    - Go Back to Hell
    - In the Darkness
    - Black Widow
    - Lay Down the Law

It's about the Cold War basically and also the fall of communism. There are scenes from the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Romanian (Eastern European) Revolution in it, for example.
The Wind of Change is basically about feeling the change of times in the wind. Like you know it's coming. It's inevitable. "Where the children of tomorrow dream away in the wind of change" :D
