I could watch those SSME's start up all day. A puff of flame, the engines shake, then the flame goes from orange to blue. The whole structure leans forward, eager to be released. And the shuttle seemingly leaps off the pad. I always somehow wished for a ride on that magnificent beast.
I have a particular fascination for the always concise and poetic messages the countdown narrator will add, STS135 for a starter is just epic!
Legendary comments always. I will have to do a "STS commentary" compilation :)

The space shuttle was a monster of a spacecraft, a space truck if you will, it put a lot of stuff in orbit and landed like an airplane, it was beautiful, the solid rocket boosters provided massive thrust to lift all that weight, the flaw was'nt the rocket it was man stupidity, however I think the Russian Soyuz is the most brilliant space craft concept, but now things have changed todays spacecraft are different, so different i don't know if they are real, so spacious and light, the engines look week, i don't know how they do it SPACEX

I am not a fan of SLS, however , the RS-25 engine i am a fan of, so to see and hear 4 in flight this year will be a unique experience. by the way, discovery launch... was there a combustion problem?, watch how the engine bells suddenly jump @7:43
Exactly that’s the only reason why I excited for sls
The engines were gimballing into flight configuration. It served as a test, because they needed to gimbal to steer the vehicle. If for whatever reason they were unable to move correctly, the shuttle's computer would shut them down, stop the count,and abort the launch.
Who started up the main engines and boosters on the space shuttle?
Computer. At T-15, computer would take over the ignition procedure
