- Just a project playing around with different materials. Kind of a bit of a tutorial on how to make a leather notebook. You could say it's a bit of a How to on making a leather journal as well, Really it's me doing a DIY book binding video on book binding and sticking a note book which has a a hardback leather cover. Which ever way you look at it, I hope you enjoy it and get inspired about doing something your self! :-)

You now know why bookbinding has truly been an art of its own for centuries. This was your first attempt, and you're disappointed in it? I think you did pretty bloody good! Don't be too quick to point out errors. It's a rare person indeed that achieves perfection on their first go at something like this. I think it looks great, and would be more than proud to own it. But It was still a lot of fun. I had in my head that i would have the leather much tighter across the cover, and try to emboss it, I think this to be the main cause for disappointment. The leather was pretty poor quality, and could probably have do with stretching a little more.
That said, it's still a book, that can be used, so watch out for future videos along these lines :-)

The amount of encouragement and love in these comments is really heartwarming! I just recently also made one by using Sea Lemon's tutorial and I had similar complaints with mine. I had the opposite problem with my edge though, it was just a little too short, so the the end pages almost were longer. But I too look forward to future achievements!
I'm a Bookbinder & I think you did a really good job for a first effort! The 'cover papers' you mentioned are called 'Endpapers' & book covers &/or spines are debossed, not embossed (a very common misconception). A small book press would have ironed out the leather cover. Keep on keeping on :)

You actually did very well for your first try. This is a true art. Careful stretching and precision alignment are not easily achieved. Your gaps between the spine board and face boards should be 1/4". the face boards should only be 1/4" bigger then the book. Book binding leather is much thinner then jacket leather so you had considerable obstacles to over come.
Very nice work though. I wouldn't hang my head after that.

Great project. Love the reuse of an old jacket for the leather. When I run out of composition books I'll have to try this. Thanks.
It was definitely worth having a bash at reusing the leather. Although a couple of people have said that bookbinding leather is thinner (which makes a lot of sense now), Expect some other note books in the future, I've also invested in one of those punches to round the page corners ;-)
I have to make a portfolio for an architecture class and this is seriously the most useful video everr!!!!

Don't be too hard on yourself! You did bloody well to be honest. I'm only just starting out with papercrafting but jewellery making and leatherwork is my background. My day job is nursing so I completely appreciated your stitching-it's way better than mine 😂

Well done :) I'd rather be creative than spend lots of money on books. Im trying to find the right tools to make a ring binder.
Great project! I have done this many times before but using paper instead of leather. You can find some pretty good quality papers for this purpose in most craft stores to practice before you use leather again.
In my experience, the spine cardboard piece makes the book look nicer but limits how much flex it has. For everyday notes, I leave it out (Moleskine notebooks leave it out too.)

thanks, it's a pretty cool product, nice and easy to use. seemed easier to use that than mess about with something from a tube or tin. :-)

I hope you mean "TOME" and not "TOMB"! HAHAHA I wouldn't have much faith in the longevity of a tomb built from glue, leather, and cardboard!

Thank you for this, I thought this was a great idea for a gift. I have just spent several enjoyable hours looking at lots of bookbinding videos. Sea Lemon is good but have a,look at bookbinderschronicle as well for a more in-depth look. Whilst your video looks similar to the Diresta one, you took the time to sew in the sentences whilst Diresta used a modified version of the "Perfect" system used for magazines etc. Yours should last longer! Thank you again I now know a lot more about bookbinding than I did before I watched your video!

I would be the first to admit that I know very little about book binding, but learnt a lot myself whilst having a go.
Although I admit to taking inspiration from Jimmy, and others, I tried to put my own stamp on this project. There will be other videos around this idea in the future.
I thought it was great. Esp by hand and eyeball. Good eye. If you don't like the end papers, add another piece of paper over it to cover it, But I thought it was great. We are always our greatest critics. Nice leather, too

I recently made my own bookbinding and the result was better than expected, didnt know how it was gonna turn out and now im filling it with dessert recipes (im a pastry chef XD)

Nice recycle of old leather jacket. I'll keep that in mind for sourcing leather in the future. Thrift stores have a bunch of them.
I find they're a good place, and I otherwise probably wouldn't use them, so it's all for a good cause.

What kind of adhesive did you use to connect the leather with the cardboard? Great job btw
its just a spray contact adhesive - just because its an near instant bond. PVA wood glue works fine, but it takes awhile to dry.

What type of card/material did you cover with the leather to make it hardback?
Also would this method work if the book had far fewer, tea stained pages in? I want to make something like this as brides maids invites but I only need 14 pages.
Oh also that wooden thing you were using to clamp the pages did you make that or can you buy them?

Thanks +Jessica McCluskey !! Firstly I am no book binder! If a professional book binder watched this they would probably feint! :-) to answer your questions though....
I simply used the cardboard from the back of the paper pad that i got the pages from - when you buy a refill pad of paper theres a piece of card to keep the pad stiff so i just used that.
I don't think the number of pages will have a great effect on the outcome, but I've never tried it. That said you can buy thick heavy hardback books and small thin ones too!
To clamp the pages and parts I simply used a couple of scraps of plywood 18mm thick and some woodworking clamps I had. You can buy book presses, but i figured it was easy enough use what i had. check out the channel "Sea Lemon" she has loads of tutorials, and is far better at book binding than I! :-)

Could this work if you printed the pages of a book? Like say for instance you printed the pages of the book on a thicker paper?
Yes, I don't see why not, at the end of the day thats how books are made! I think it would be a good idea to make you printed pages slightly oversized to your planned finished size though - that way you'll have a better chance of getting the printed area in line with your trimmed edges. Give it a go!!

What glues did you use. Did you use 22 pound paper or 26# .
Sticky glue, and white paper.
Thanks for the tutorial! How do you stitch together the groups of paper. It looks like you are stitching together only a few at a time and then combining them.
Thanks for watching... It's called "saddle stitching" it's pretty straightforward, and means you can effectively have as many groups of pages as you want and therefore create really think bound volumes. the channel "sea lemon" has some brilliant saddle stitch notebook tutorials!

really nice job sir, i've been hesitating to do one myself for a little cosplay, i'd need a more massive book, something like B5 format and the leather cover rims enclosed with metal, any tips on how could i do that ?

I've always been intimidated by hard case binding because I can never get the cover measurements right. I'm always scared of it being too short or too small for the block or maybe I didn't add enough space in the gutters between the boards. How do I get over this?
Is there a certain formula to follow?
+sally al-ashary Thanks for watching. TBH I can't remember what measurements I used, "I think" it was 1/2" but not sure. Check out "Sea Lemons, the channel - she does some great book binding videos, that go into a good amount of detail. With things like this though, try not to avoid trying something for fear of failing! Go Get stuck in!!!!! If you can make it once, you can make it again if you mess it up. learn and enjoy.

I have a question! At 6:06 you press it down onto the card then lift it back up and I hear a distinct ripping sound. My guess is that you used something like Easy-Tack? Otherwise I am confused on how it was sticky, or tacky. Great video though and I don't see anything wonky at all! I love your technique. If I were doing it, Lord help! It would look like a 3-year-old did it. I'm good at making a design for it. Not so much actually doing it. lol!
HA HA!!! No, that was the table creaking as I'm pressing down! :-) I did this project on the kitchen table as there's a light directly overhead! The glue used for this project is called LP61, it's a permanent fix contact adhesive.

I see a lot of fingers doing the job that the bone folder is there for. You should get one, or use a sturdy credit card to smooth out you leather
I completely agree! If i were doing this a lot, I probably would, but when you put leather onto a surface with contact adhesive, it's stuck, there's no way to move it or stretch it, it's fixed.
I'm not a book binder or leather worker, i just like making things, except music, i'm not musical either, other than having an opinion on it.

That is a product called "LP61" It's made by a company called TensorGrip, they are available through many suppliers here in the UK, and part of "Quinn Global" in the US. They are a great company, and the people who work there are friendly, knowledgable and Fun too. They know there stuff! contact them via twitter (AT TensorGlobal) if you have any questions, or check local availability! Its really great stuff. I now don't use any other form of spray adhesive that needs to be permanent.

this was an old leather jacket that i got from a charity shop and cut up.
Yeah, I don't think Dog watched the video, else Dog would've known. When I saw you pull out that jacket, I cringed knowing what you were about to do! I don't know, I think in my mind I felt like there is a law somewhere that says you aren't supposed to desecrate anything that's made from leather (though yours is probably faux but I have no way of knowing), ever. lol! Still, I think it's great that you're not just tossing it. You're getting more use out of it and that's a fantastic thing to do. My congrats on a great technique and it's absolutely beautiful!
Thanks! thats really nice to say! further to the jacket, I knew someone who worked at the charity shop in question, they used to get lots of clothing so the things that didn't sell to customers would get back loaded and sold off per kilo to a firm, the jacket, and a skirt were taken from this pile and used. that was about 5 years ago, and i still have some of it. looking at the back, it is real leather - but very thin stuff.

what kind of stitch did you use on the signatures?
It’s been a while since I did this but it was probably either pamphlet or kettle stitch. 🤔🤔
It looked like the kettle stitch to me. (also, props to BrainFizz for still being active on a 7 year old video!)
What is the spray glue you are using?
Its one of the Tensor grip range (L12 or LP62 I think), great stuff - the only contact adhesive you'll likely see me use now!
Hey, how many unfolded pages did you use?
I can't remember to be honest! LOL! It really doesn't matter much though, as you make up the smaller sections and then stick them together at the end. this means you can make it as many pages long as you need.

you don't need very much, aside the obvious leather, paper, card, needle and thread, it's just wood glue, an awl, knife, ruler, some boards to clamp with and some patience.

It's just a cutting mat to stop you damaging your table top, you can use anything thats flat and you don't mind being cut into.

+jamie frost using this method only requires a few sheets of printer paper, or scrap paper cut to a suitable size and a needle and thread. plus whatever you use for the cover. No expensive pieces of parchment required. :-)

LaughingLion4Ever I'd Never done anything like this before, so doing a "how-to style tutorial route" seemed a little bit adventurous. Prior to this christmas I was also making lots of projects for gifts, and didn't particularly want to spend 60% of the time shooting video scenes, so I just got the camera out and got on with it.
It wasn't meant to be a rip off of Jimmy's work, I can see the similarities, but an "exact copy" seems a little harsh.

It was a charity shop find, and got for the purpose... But yeah, you could look at it that way.... another way is, someone going in wanting a coat would get a coat, i wanted this one, so the charity sold two coats, not just one coat...
