      Man, I WISH that was considered "too low." People in general just aren't all that enthused about forking over even $100 for something like this. Not when cheap alternatives exist. I mean, Moleskines (ugh) are already considered quite the luxury, especially where I'm from.

If you want to net that much then most like youll have to make double the amount.
      Considering at 20,000 minimum you are making 54 of these per day for the year it just can happen with so many processes taking a week at least (the drying the pasting the pressing) and then who would even be willing to purchase even 1000 of these over the course of 5 10 years let alone the 20,000 you have made (of course including variation as a minimum).
      And then you have made the product and that is 5% of what is needed in order to sell it. Theres marketing (the biggest one) , financing, targeting, and much more which will even give you the chance to be somewhat competitive.
      I am sorry for tearing you apart like this but you do not have the faintest clue of what you are talking about.

    • @abz4852
      @abz4852 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @DAVE ADAM you made a business plan that was bank approved? Really? I have no idea why you find that so reliable considering:
      1. In current period banks are giving out and printing money like madmen
      2. Any decent person knows how many so called bank approved businesses still failed at the end of the day. Hint: Its not a small percentage.
      Then you may say a well its a well thought out plan, it will not fail as bad. You are challenging the art market. We are not talking about content filled books that a whole entire topic entirely. These books will be sold empty and are being bought purely off the quality and the aesthetic.
      What goes though you seem to think youve nailed it hard with your idea of very easily finding 1000-10000 individual consumers looking for this precise product at a price range of $350+. Then you say we can use assembly sub-assembly and a standardisation process, so bam well done you have destroyed the quality of the world slash that price in half and you have also up the expenses. Can you contribute something useful? Mynti Girl who I wont assume has no knowledge of creating these books, may do very well with your so called insight and understanding of the market but this is only with your insight. Otherwise she will be sitting with 10,000 books produced (which btw she wont produce this many in a year, its still close to 3 books per day assuming she works at it every single day) , head level in debt and cursing herself for listening to some random stranger on the internet.
      To whoever does make 10,000 of these in a year, I will personally give them 1 million, thats how sure I am of it. And you are right, I would never purchase this, I may make this myself but I will never purchase this, and if any of the rich people who have read the likes of Think and Grow Rich, How to Win Friends and Influence People, the Richest Man in Babylon, or even Rich dad poor dad. If any of them buy one of these Ill commend them for being willing to spend that much money on something that goes against all their teachings, unless they a collectors. Which again a niche within a niche. Such a sadly small market.

    • @abz4852
      @abz4852 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @DAVE ADAM oh sure, I will head off but before I do I must ask with your incredible self assurance on the fact that the mass production of this book type and selling of it would be so successful, why do you not do it yourself? Surely you would be ever so successful at it that I would be willing to prostrate before you. Also you are very right. I in fact do not own 1 million dollars, I am what you can consider the living slave, working about 60 hours a week, which does not make me rich enough to afford a home where I live but certainly not poor enough to make large sums of investments.
      In my current sickness I have gone to spending a short while of time on youtube and have entered quite a useless argument with you. But anyways I plan to change all that and I would like you to answer my above question.

    • @abz4852
      @abz4852 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @DAVE ADAM okay well I hope to see you do well in if you profit in producing this product. I understand the entrepreneur mindset and am sure for one that its not something I will have. My negativity is natural for me and I tend to prefer to live life with a bit of a more harsher view if you will.
      Thank you for your concern over my health. I personally do enjoy creating things in my free time. I currently am in the process of writing a series of books my self while I keep my full time work and transition to learning a trade I enjoy. You are right I am quite lacking in marketing. I know a little marketing myself such as social media marketing, email, website, cold calling, lead generating, seo, sem, influencer marketing, affiliate marketing, relationship marketing and then all the pricing strategies with upselling and what not but I have zero experience using them. I am sure if you make use of alot of these or to a proficient level you may get your target audience but for me I am far happier providing services and then carefully investing since I can obtain a far greater return for very low effort.
      If something you say pisses me off in the future Ill come argue with you later so until then.

    As a leather worker, some tips I would recommend is a beveler stamp tool for relieving designs instead of just plain cutting them. Go lighter on the dye. Contact cement instead of glue. Keep the leather damp while working with it with water and mink oil. A final coating of neatsfoot oil when done, no wax.

    Hey, thanks for this tutorial. I am half-way through my first attempt, and it is going great. I am even using a chair for my jig for stitching the signatures together, too!
    For reference, I soaked each piece of paper individually in the tea for 4 minutes, then baked for 8 minutes at 210F. This allowed for two in the oven and one in the tea at the same time, then I rotated them every 4 minutes; took out the dried paper, shifted the half-dried one over, and added the new one. Took only 2 hours for the 30 pieces I'm using.

    I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it (since there are over 1,000 comments), but the baking paper that you used is called Parchment Paper. It's the only kind of baking paper my family uses, because the Wax Paper didn't work as well for baking... Also, you should be careful what kind of eraser you use on leather if you're going to stain it. Some erasers leave a slight residue that you can feel, if you run clean fingers over the area you used it. That residue can alter the color of the stain on both wood and leather. Sadly I can't recall what the best eraser is for that, as I'm more into drawing and painting. I did paint a wooden serving tray (about 18 years ago) and erased the marks I made to center the design, I sealed it with a tinted varnish. The areas where I used the eraser were not the same color as the rest of the tray. No one else ever noticed it, but I did since I knew it should have been a more even color. I'm not sure if this is a problem you've ever had or not, but I just wanted to let you know it is a possibility.

    • @RassTheKing
      @RassTheKing 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've had a lot of success aging paper with instant coffee and microwaving it and spraying/paint the edges with an extra dose of instant coffee when its a bit damp to get an aged look. It's a lot faster, uses less energy and is easier to experiment with.
    I've also seen leather thinned out with a drum sander on a dremel tool (as a substitute for a knife)
    And as a precaution, when using pliers to clamp the metal book ends down, you can slip in a piece of cloth, cardboard or leather in between the pliers nose and the decorative metal surface to prevent any tool marks from marring the surface. (I didn't see any problems with that here, but just something to keep in mind)
    This was a really cool video! I really loved how accessible the tools where and how easy to follow the video was! Like damn, I wish more videos were like this!

    This video was a lifesaver! I was gifted leather for a bookbinding project that was too thick to use, and I thought I wouldn’t be able to use it. I had no idea carving it down thinner would work so well! Thank you!

  • @Alchemetica
    @Alchemetica 6 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    I enjoyed watching your bookbinding episode, below are some alternate methods and/or suggestions to use.
    Another solution to obtain an aged or antique look for the leather is to use good quality leather dyes and antique finish, followed by leather penetrating oils and waxes to give the leather a high degree of pliability where it folds. As mentioned, the leather is somewhat thick for the purposes of bookbinding. There are better techniques and choices to age the paper using PH neutral products.
    When making paper ageing solution, be it tea or a paint based solution, use PH indicator strips and aim for a PH of 7 for page ageing. Below 7, the solution is becoming acidic and will shorten the life of the paper. To use tea stain on paper, start with quality paper, such as, archival, it has a long life; but is expensive. If the purified water and colouring material is not Neutral; but acidic add to several litres of colouring water an eighth of a teaspoon of baking soda, dissolve, measure PH and if necessary repeat unit PH 7 is obtained. Do not us lemon to lower the acidity as it relies on a chemical reaction in your stomach to work at lowering the acidity.
    PVA white glue should be replaced with suitable book binding glue, A weak PVA is used to make writing pads, designed to tear off pages. It also used for perfect bound paper books where the pages eventually start falling out. In summary, not glue designed for long life in printing and bookbinding.
    One last thing, perhaps add marbled front and back inside cover sheets using blacks and greys to add a Gothic look and may be add to the look of the the books intended use.

    • @false0start
      @false0start 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the first time I've ever seen someone downplay PVA. Granted, I've only been involved in the hobby for six months or so. What would you recommend as a "suitable bookbinding glue"?

    • @buci131
      @buci131 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@false0start You can use good quality, archival PVA bookbinding glue (better to pick it up from a bookbinding materials supplier like Talas or Hollanders) that will work just fine but the more traditional type of glue to use for leather bindings would be wheat paste (or wheat paste mixed with methyl cellulose)--one of the main reasons is that it has a longer working time so you have a bit more time to get the leather positioned and shaped properly.

    This style of book is really catchy. You could try to let the pages soak in tea for longer, or for have them tea-painted (and dried) multiple times. Another thing you could do is use dirt or coffee to randomly stain the pages in random places, as well as fold a corner of some pages, as a bookmark, if you ever get to actually writing and/or drawing on those pages.

    Just a warning, though: tea can get quite acidic, especially if you over-steep it (which is basically what's going on here), so either apply an antacid like a baking soda/alum bath to counteract that, or use another staining material. Pigments powders like iron oxide will do. Otherwise, the acid is going to eat into your paper over time. Would be a waste of all that effort.

      She baked the paper to dry it. Baking soda reacts to heat by forming carbon dioxide, along with soda ash and water. That's how quickbreads like pancakes are leavened. Could've caused problems with structure or aesthetics if unreacted baking soda remained on the sheets as they baked.

      Hi I know this was a few months ago now so I hope you still see this.
      This book on its own has character but without your words it'll never have a real life with all the good and bad things that make that up. Leaving a book so beautiful but empty of life is so much worse than any writing, erasing and rewriting you might do. If you wrote enough in this book by the end of it your writing would be calmer, more decisive and the books would have a real story of your progress in it.
      Bring life to a beautiful book today!

    Beautiful work. I am curious why you didn't choose a stronger, flexible glue like Rena's Colle de Cologne? It's a waterproof leather/urethane contact cement that bonds to just about anything. I've been a professional leather worker for 20+yrs and that stuff is the best, hands down. It's expensive but the results are worth it.

    • @buci131
      @buci131 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      One of the standards in bookbinding is using adhesives that can be reversed, if needed. It doesn't look like the Colle de Cologne is reversible, more of an extremely strong, permanent adhesive. PVA is one of the most common modern glues you can use for bookbinding because it's strong, flexible, and usually archival. Though, traditionally, in working with leather binders would use wheat paste, sometimes mixed with methyl cellulose, because it extends the drying time which gives you more time to finish the binding.
