Sounds like the previous owner has done the BST Magic to the carb. I've done it to two DR's with great results but this last one has the plugs sooting up like yours. I dropped the needle one position to lean it up a bit as a temporary fix before my last trip to the high country but believe my problem is the float height as it sometimes leaks from the overflow pipe. You could possibly have a too big a pilot jet also or like you said you've restricted air flow with the sock and over lubed the air filter. You were only 30 minutes from me at Kangaroo Valley.
So close yet so far! We stopped in the Valley for a cold drink and carried on. We swapped out the needle and jet for something more standard - running sweet now.
@@2wheels2everywhere22 Cool, definately sounds like the BST Magic was done to your bike which involves grinding the needle down a bit. Glad the standard needle fixed your problem👍.
If the bike is running rich with a modded carb probably worth replacing the needle and needle jet, the needle jet has a tendency to become oval if the needle is not central in the jet, you can sometimes see the wear on the needle but after market needles are steel so don’t show the wear as much, the factory needle is anodised aluminium, factory needle jets were brass on the earlier ones but the newer ones or at least the new needle jets from Suzuki are steel so as not to wear as much I guess. I replaced needle and needle jet on my DR before shipping it to Europe and the fuel economy improved a fair bit.

Yep. New needle & jet did the trick. Oh, and cleaning the excess oil from the filter didn't hurt either. Cheers.
Nice vid. It's not an adventure without some shit parts. My carb gives me trouble all the time I think fuel injected is the way to go.
