- I added the t1-11, roof rafters, and metal to the off grid cabin addition. Just a couple of minor things to do then it’s time for windows. Then it will be officially dried in and ready for interior work. #diy #homestead #outdoors

I remember watching him on the first cabin and my Mom Heart dropping watching him straddle his logs while alone in the woods.
We need more Kyles in this world!
Thanks for sharing.
I love the chainsaw construction techniques. Your precision chainsaw cuts are awesome to watch. When you say "simple" many of us are amazed at the skill and knowledge it takes to do your build projects and make them look so good.

The entire time I was watching this video I couldn't help but think what a cool documentary of your life this is for your newborn baby. Your child is one day going to see how life was before it was born and know just exactly how cool mom and dad are. You've already packed a ton of life lessons in the history of your video making career. Well done Kyle.
So true and great idea to film.
You are so good at explaining how to do things, I think I could build a house myself--no maybe not.
I just started watching again. Now I saw Skeeter!! That made my day ♥️

I never said congratulations on the news about the baby. I absolutely love that you guys are so excited to have a baby and I can't wait to see that precious baby when it is born. I've never seen a man jump into action the way you have at the news of being a father. I love that you put everything else on hold to prepare your house for the arrival of your child! You are an amazing person Kyle. You'll be an amazing father!! Sierra is so blessed to have you in her life and that baby will be so blessed to have you as his (or her) father. Hi Kyle, I'm Stewart from Paisley in Scotland, I like many other think you are doing a fantastic job on both your cabins, I wish I had half your energy and drive, but I'm old and sore now, but you have given me great joy watching you this past year.
Love to you and your family, keep up the good work .
Stewart
I stopped watching for a couple years while life took a tangent, but have come back to find you continuing to thrive. Love the addition.
Dang you work fast Son! As always very good progress and lots to be proud of. Thanks for sharing.
If you ever want to see the making of a true superhero just watch a real man get told he is going to be a dad. And this is what you get keep up the hard work sir your going to be a awesome dad
You know for someone who said he is self taught. You do an excellent job of building a house.that roof truss ain't going no where.great job kyle.
Kyle you are amazing if you go with this speed you will be unstoppable My family and I wish you the best your family so lucky to have you ❤ This is from a mother to fifth son.
Small tip for the roof screws on the flatter section of roof on your extension - cover each screw with a waterproof sealant. It won't last forever and it'll be a pain in the arse to actually do it, but it'll protect the rubber seals on the actual screws and you can replace the sealant every other winter, instead of having to replace the screws.
Love watching your videos...
You are an amazing builder. Very nice.
It’s going to be a beautiful home in which to raise your child in. Wonderful life you’re making for your family.
Kyle, it's remarkable how a young guy can figure & engineer this entire build mostly alone. You are unbelievably smart...really smart. Thnx 4 sharing the process with all of us. Would like a blooper reel if you have such clips?
Born and raised in Maine. Do like my mom did Kyle. She kept the wood fire roaring in the Franklin. It was 93f in our house in winter and we always had water running off our house. No shoveling needed. Miss you mom!
Yay, you raised the walls and roof, awesome seeing the progress of your wonderful homestead 👍🏻👍🏻. Thanks for sharing with us and bringing a Smile to our face. So very proud of you both. Sending love to the animals too❤️ Stay safe. Love and Prayers For All ❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻
Sit on that roof and have a cool one. Toast a friend in Mississippi. :)
I am glad to see your positioning of the T1-11 onto the rim joist and below the bottom plate. I see to many cabin builder stop the T1-11 at the bottom plate of the wall.. I yell at the screen "at least go an inch past"!
Thar makes sense, but what about the top? Should it be flush with the top of the wall framing?
@@humb1s3rvant first off you want to run it past the bottom plate to do your best to ensure water won’t penetrate. I would even caulk where the bottom plate meets the sill plate - all the way around before I put the siding on. Not for water but for air penetration.
To answer your question, yes, you want to bring the T1-11 to the top plate, but, the downside of T111 is it’s only 96 inches. That would mean you would have to shorten up your wall heights by the amount of inches that you’re going past the bottom plate.
Your addition is coming along great! You do amazing work! Great job! 👏
The addition is looking fantastic Kyle 😊. Great job and everyone is rooting for you and Sierra!!! That's gonna be a very lucky baby 👶. Looking forward to seeing the next video!!! 😊
Your new addition is looking awesome!!!
You could at least wait til the addition is born before you say that. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂sorry couldn’t resist that I know you meant the cabin extension and it looks bloody great and it’s going up quicker than the cabin went up some 4 years or so ago.😊😊
Skeeter is such a sweet pup❤
It's very exciting to see the progress from week to week. Looks like it will be a great addition to the existing home. Your truly an inspiration to us DIY'ers out here watching from home.
Looking good! Love all the windows! This is going to be a light and airy addition for all 3 of yall.
Salt of the earth, you two are!
Ever hear of ice dams? Right where the pitch changes is where the freezing snow and ice will build a dam and allow water to run back under that flashing. It's an age old problem.
I'm more worried that he didn't install plywood sheathing before the tar paper. The roof load weights he quoted for the trusses are based on if he has plywood decking. That metal roof between joists will never hold snow load between joists and start to buckle
This young man is a super hero
Loving watching this build man! Your living the dream! Congratulations Dad!
You should be putting your screws on the rib. The displacement of water is much less on the rib, than on the flat part of the metal. That is the proper way to do it anyways. Happy for the new addition. You will be busy with the baby!
Yep. Never understand why people screw in the flats. You see it all the time
When you set your mind to something, you go right at it Kyle. Both builds are coming together good. Good luck fishing, hopefully you get a video of the two of you out on the lake
Wish I could buy stock in you, Kyle - talented, smart, well-spoken and hard-working. Hat Tip from an old timer
You just amaze me. It’s good Cierra can help too. Be safe.
Great Job Kyle, I can see you both will be Wonderful Parents. There's nothing like having your own child it's Great.
Sierra's pink work clogs. Kyle you're a hard-working young American!
Definitely coming together! ❤
You are a smart hard working guy...
I’m sure you know this, but be sure to stain the bottom edge of that siding. We have the same stuff on our well house, and it is now rotting along the bottom foot the entire length because while being painted, no one thought about that edge being as vulnerable as it is. The rain and weather bounces off the ground back up along it.
My concern would be ice build up at that angle joint. If snow isn't removed and the heat comes up an ice damn could build and push water back up to the joint. Ask me how I know. Too late now but a sharper roof angle might have helped fix this scenario. It will be fine if you keep it cleaned off.
Dude, been a fan for a while now. Congrats and thank you both… all 3 actually
Kyle your an amazing young man! God has gifted and greatly talented you! Your work ethic is outstanding! God bless you and your family! You’re a survivor in such times!
Shalom!
So impressive Kyle. Very impressive indeed.
Good old T1-11 it appears. Thx. Guy builds 2 homes at one time mostly by himself. Impressive.
Hi again KYLE
You're doing a great job with the new addition! That's going to be a super extention to your home there and the added footage will come in handy in so many ways.
Can hardly wait to see what you'll be doing with your new log home. So far so good!
Your craftsmanship is near perfect and your work ethic is amazing. A great combination to pass on to your kids.
Thx as always for sharing.
Catcha next one.
In winter run a stout rope across the roof where the cabin meets addition.
After big snow a person at each end grabs rope and pulls the rope outward over addition under-slicing the snow.
What’s up folks? 🤗
Looking Amazing Kyle! You're both livin' the dream - to be sure!
What a great worker you are! That room will look amazing when you are all finished with it! Love watching your videos Kyle! And also Sierras!,
IMPRESSIVE❗️look forward to your videos 💯🦋🌻
Kyle you have a fan here! You’re a remarkable young man! I would have loved that life just didn’t happen for me! Best to you Cierra and Skeeter😃!
Congrats on your new family, I see you’re still building a dream in the woods.
Kudos, Kyle! You are totally killin it! Thanks for sharing this ❤️
Your addition is coming along nicely. Looks good
You are certainly moving your job along at a pace! Great job.❤
That is an awesome addition, you work fast! Much respect.👊🏻😎💪🏻
Looks amazing Kyle
Having worked for Midwest Steel Erection Co. out of Waterloo Iowa back in the early 70s, we screwed down the metal sheeting through the ridges on roofs, and in the valleys on walls.
Looking great. I was so curious about the roofing tie-in to the existing roof. Looks like you have it worked out. Would still like to see how you do the corners to finish them out and completely seal them from rain/snow. Great job. Very interesting to watch. So happy about your growing family and can't wait to see the baby. God bless
It’s amazing how fast you can work
❤ New property? Did we miss an episode ? Good Deal ? Natural Gas and electricity? Wow happy for you . ❤
I've regretted every shed roof I've done, fast easy and cheap.
Damn dude. you are crushing it. A blessed life.
Never even thought about having to meet a snow load standard. Snow isn’t something we need to think about here. I imagine it gets fairly heavy though. I’ve been really impressed with your build on this and your log cabin so far. No pissin’ about, you just get it done.
The apron flashing you have that goes under the old roof and onto the new, has a lot of leak potential.
You haven't factored in wind driven rain, which will go straight up there because you haven't used foam fillers to block it.
The screws should be in the crown of the sheet, not the pan of the sheet, you've got a rubber washer at the top, but where the screw meets the roof there is no seal and the water will make its way into the screw hole over time.
I do these roofs for a living. I've seen these problems again and again, and people always drastically underestimate the effect of wind driven rain.
You need a foam filler in that flashing, and the screws in the crowns, preferably silicone the fillers in.
Just some advice from 20+ years experience doing it.
Agreed... Kyle pointed out correctly that the main roof will shed it all to that spot right there basically on the flat roof addition. So it'll be fine as long as no more than 5" accumulation occurs. More than that and it'll drain the easiest path under the flashing and down the wall inside. I didn't even consider wind driven as you pointed out. Good catch. 5 minutes ago was the best time to solve this future problem. Now, is still the best time to correct this. Was faced with an identical problem with a family member's house. What devastation we had to repair after they thought they had a roof leak. It was this precise arrangement that rotted that wall down to the foundation and caused the mold that forced them to move out for 4 months.
I’d be interested to see how you attached the new rafters to the existing cabin if you get a chance in the next video.
Thanks for all the great info and content. You guys are indeed living the dream.
It’s great to see how much work you’ve done so far. It looks amazing and looking forward to see the progress in your next video. Take care and be safe. (Judy NB)🇨🇦🌲
Wow Kyle that all happened so fast! Its more than half done! The addition will be a blessing for you both with newborn coming along. Cierra please dont try to do too much lifting..i know you want / need to assist at times. Just light work for the rest of the build. ❤
I have been looking forward to this build! Can’t wait to see the results and live watching you make it happen! Been anxiously awaiting the other build too!! Very creative! ❤😊
With the never ending newness of the weather perhaps you might want to put a storm shelter below your addition. Kinda like batmans cave. Complete with cinderblock walls canned goods, emergency lights, solar power backup, and a small wood burning heating unit with the appropriate fuel. Since you have the skills this is something for you to think about. And don't forget the metal door that only locks on the inside. God bless, amen.
The new addition looks great already!!
this country needs more Kyles!
Well the rooster is cheering you all on.
Hey Kyle, good vid. The project is really coming along. Good job on the roof transition. Only concern maybe if it piles up at the break and melts and runs back up under the flashing. Maybe a few squirts of sealant up under it. But it looks great. It may never be winter in Minnesota again like it was. I worked up there several years. All over. That's going to be nice to have all that extra room. Got to figure out the chimney pipe too. A haircut, hell let it grow while you are young. Time will take care of it. It has a lot of mine. Take care, work safe.
I fkn love your videos. A young man going for it all..
Wow! You have accomplished so much! Amazing work!👍
Amazing hard working as usual ! The result will be beautiful !
WOW! Lot of progress Sir Kyle. Great job.
