      All the people mad about the fat shaming are most likely fat or have a loved one thats fat. If you support people being extremely over weight then in my eyes YOU are the problem. You are telling people its ok to let yourself die faster because you don't have self control with food or lack motivation to lose the weight. If its a medical issue and you can't lose weight thats one thing but so many people CAN lose the weight but simple don't try and blame us on them being fat.

    The whole Insatiable situation is incredibly ironic because the backlash was caused by people judging the show by the bare minimum that there is to know about it, even though they claim to be fighting against that very same type of judgement.
    Food for thought.

    Phil, reference fat shaming, it happened to me in reverse. I was a rescue firefighter with a doctors note to weigh more than average because of the muscle content of my body. After several line-of-duty injuries, including a major back injury, I found myself unable to work out and my weight began to increase.
    Soon, due to those injuries, I was unable to walk any kind of distance and was actually confined to a wheelchair. Again between body changes and medications my weight increased even more. Add to that after my last surgery I took almost a year to heal, so no doctor will suggest even bariatric surgery. I've even had to retire from my job because of the pain and meds effecting my ability to concentrate. Not a great feature for an emergency dispatcher.
    Now everyone who doesn't know me assumes I'm in a wheelchair because I'm fat and lazy. Try working past that. It's the main reason I don't appear in my own TH-cam videos. My entire career has been in service to others and now no one seems to care.

      As Bob Sees It That is so terrible! I am so sorry! I think the big problem with “fat shaming” is that people assume that weight is due to laziness and over-eating when sometimes it is not. People should just judge people based on who they are, not how they look.

    Debbie Ryan has faced YEARS of fat-shaming and shitty people as well as went through a period of self-harm and an abusive relationship. I'm sure she didn't just throw those experiences to the wayside when she filmed this Netflix movie. Debby Ryan still isn't "Hollywood thin". People need to wait until they can actually watch a freaking movie before slamming the actresses in it.

    I really don't get why people care so much about the Insatiable trailer. Just because the main character loses weight and only then begins to fit in doesn't imply that her fellow students' behavior is good or amiable and neither does the main character's newfound lust for revenge say that you have to be 'conventionally attractive' first and then you can get back at all your harassers. It's a god damn story, not a list of rules to live by.

    I hate the whole "fat shaming" things. It's like we're telling people its ok and healthy to be huge. I went from 340 to 190 in 2 years so I know what it's like being big. How would it have helped me if people told me I am perfect just the way I am and nothing is wrong. There was plenty of shit wrong like my BMI, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, heart rate, knees, and ankles. You don't have to tear a fat person down, but you also don't need to lie to them

    • @Adam-hp2xg
      @Adam-hp2xg 6 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      I definitely agree that some people take it way too far, but you said it yourself we don't need to actively tear fat people down just for being fat. Should we encourage them to live a healthier lifestyle? Absolutely. But is it justifies to make them feel like less of a human being because they're fat? No.

      I agree. Obesity issues are at an all time high and it's (obesity) mostly the fault of the sufferer barring a few underlying health issues. The idea that societies needs to stop pressuring people to be thin is absurd considering just how fat (and getting fatter) society is.

    On the whole fat shaming thing. obviously its not ok to shame or harass anyone for any reason... but more and more it feels like its less and less about stopping bullies and more about normalizing and almost promoting being over weight as a good thing.
    The most common message along these lines that i hear everywhere, even in this video is "its ok to be fat"... and while i know the original meaning was "you shouldn't be judged just because of your weight because you are still a person inside", now a days it gets conflated by everyone and is taken literally as "its OK to be fat" that "its fine to live as over weight and obese and you don't need to change because its fine and normal". its like they have taken it a step too far just to be accepted...
    and a lot of time, not all the time, but a lot of time this new more extreme message is promoted by people who aren't fat, because they want to be inclusive. but by promoting it so heavily, by removing any reason for fat people to want to slim down, i think in the long term its going to hurt more then it helps.
    i also take issue with the "being attractive is just a point of view" thing to an extent. why wouldn't a physically fit human be generally on average more attractive then one who isn't? did i miss a memo? was evolution and natural selection completely debunked? or did it just never apply to humans for some reason???

      I think the power of the "fat acceptance" movement is greatly overexaggerated. Like the power of the Nazi party in America. It exists, but the vast majority of people aren't actually being affected by the message. (Also, since you're talking evolution, being plump has historically equalled longer life, since you were less likely to starve to death over the winter when there was little food. It's only in the last century or so that we have a year-round over-abundance of food, and we have the luxury of being skinny.)

    • @nfzeta128
      @nfzeta128 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Its like people are trying to deny the social and even biological norms but not to people's benefit.
      The slim people tell the fat people they're fine while sitting back and enjoying all the perks of their better situation. Its also the classic situation of people cuddling others but not actually caring about them.
      Just as with any other habit/lifestyle/actions people indulge in its the very people who just enable you in your vices that lead you down a bad path simply because they don't care enough to help you change things they actually see as detrimental.
      This whole thing has turned into people basically telling others to not bother to improve themselves.

    The insatiable backlash is 100% outrage culture. If we go down this route then what about those films which feature assholes? Are they promoting it? What about those which features revenge stories? What about those which feature dreams coming true? We all know how rare that is in real life but that's a similar 'perfection' story, just not about weight.
    If we were to denounce every story or piece of fiction based on them covering plausible but uncommon facets of life then no visual entertainment would exist.

    Obesity is the real problem not fat people. Just like we shun people who use drugs habitually we shun people who are chronically overweight (sometimes less overweight than others) Maybe we shouldn't treat health problems like a taboo and actually set up a community and culture that fosters healing and growth.

    If you look at the mgm story, in my opinion you can’t hold the hotel responsible for the shooting. They weren’t cutting corners on safety as far as I know, and it was just unfortunate for them that it happened there. Plus it lines up with the 2002 safety act rather well so I would say that it’s not their fault. However, I do think that it looks really bad at a surface level for mgm and the exaggerated headline is the only think the general public tends to see, so I can se it going either way

      Fletcher Vogt I think there’s a point that everyone forgets. The security dispatch at Mandalay Bay bungled something huge. Their security guard was shot and called it out over their radio. They delayed calling the police for at least 4 minutes. It may not sound like much, but that four minutes with an exact location could’ve helped police. They were already on scene, under fire with the rest of us, and trying to get people out.
      Many are also upset at the amount of exits that were available. The venue only had 4 for thousands of people, of which only 2 were immediately accessible. I was lucky enough, in a weird way, to not be able to get out until towards his last few rounds. They had managed to open up an exit that didn’t force you to run towards the bullets to get out. The exit thing isn’t necessarily my biggest problem with MGM, but I want to say it’s brought up in at least a few of the lawsuits. The original 1 or 2 had it listed.
      Personally, it’s disgusting that someone cheating in their casinos can be caught around the clock, but someone drilling an emergency exit closed in the middle of the day can get away with it easily.

    I'm glad I used to be fat. It made me a better person by overcompensating in other aspects of my life. Now I am no longer fat AND I retained all the things that I learned when I was fat like winning people over with just my personality, and the importance of humility and integrity.
    I also learned the struggles of being fat, so I can shut down all the nonsensical rhetoric coming from the "tolerant left" on the issue. I was fat because of my own chosing and it was terrible. The worst part was, I was angry with myself, because I was the only one to blame.

      Jerrad Johnson I'm a fat guy who is working on getting healthier and I agree with you here. Idk if you listen to Bill Burr, but he seems to have a very similar mindset and even made a joke of it: "You ate your way in, you can walk your way out!"
      I get that today's method is to say that everything is fat shaming, but unless you have a serious health issue, everyone has the ability to lose weight so long as they actually put in the work. All that said, I would say the whole "jaw wired shut" premise can be miscontrued as "stop eating and you'll be happy" but it's a movie and movies are usually about extremes. Though, to be fair, it is funny to see some overreacting in the same way other people have been known to overreact. Snake eating its own tail and all that.

If citizens try to subvert the legal government, and the government responds with force from police etc, a foriegn nation can't step in and support rebels without inflaming the situation or possibly starting a civil war. It's not as simple as sending in the troops to calm things down. Tends to have the opposite effect really, it's a risk not worth taking for deaths in the tens, as horrible as that sounds. The world seems to be watching closely though.

    Please keep reporting and raising awareness about the situation in Nicaragua. It's important to show people what a dictatorship looks like. The "terrorists" are just students trying to defend their freedom of speech and rights. And then the government escalated it, putting snipers in the streets and targeting civilians. Nicaragua is one of the most peaceful with the warmest people I've ever been. The fact that this is still going on after 3 months goes to show how terrible the situation really is. And because the media is controlled by the government, you almost don't hear about all of this. My heart breaks for my friends and family over there

    I am overweight and have been most of my life. It is true, people do treat you differently when you’re overweight. This new series is very truthful. It’s not fat shaming or saying you should bully fat people, it’s showing what really happens.
    The Pitch Perfect series featured 2 commentators that said horrible things about people’s weight and race and women and they were posed as jokes and the hosts laughed about it. Yet there wasn’t a big stink made about that. How I met your mother featured several fat jokes. They constantly equated being fat as “the worst thing that could ever happen” and that dating a fat person was unthinkable and repulsive. However, that show was still a hit. Many movies and shows make fun of fat people and society has just accepted it and encourages it.
    News flash, shaming and bullying does not bring about change. If you’re shaming someone for their weight, you do not care about that person. Shaming someone for their weight goes one of three ways, they develop a disorder like Anorexia or Bulimia, they become depressed and eat more and gain more weight, or they get revenge and hurt someone. There is a very small number of people that do take bullying and turn it into a positive and start eating healthy and exercising and improve their health, but most don’t.
    Shaming and bullying are not an effective way to bring change.
    It would be refreshing to have a series with people of all sizes and never have a fat or a skinny shaming joke or plot line. Just let people be people.

      If you’re genuinely concerned about their health, there is a way to go about telling them that you’re concerned and offering to support them emotionally through their lifestyle change. Overweight people know it’s not healthy and know they need to change, and often receive criticism from those they consider friends and family. It’s hard not having a support system. No one should be bullied for their weight. Like Phil said, they’re worthy of love and support.

It makes me really sad seeing the country like this considering I've been going there for the past 7 years every year. If the venue was aware of gaps in there security protocol prior to the shooting which could have prevented the shooting, I'd say the hotel is culpable. At this point we don't know all the facts so I'd say its a bit to early to let them venue off the hook.

Airport security are actively looking for these such threats and have the rules and policies in place to find and take care of them and if something like 911 happens, then it's on them since they could have stopped it. Resorts and hotels on the other hand are not equipped or required to have that level of security. It's like comparing a minimum wage security guard to a police officer lmao gtfo

      People aren't focusing on it because a Central or South American country being on the brink of civil war or experiencing large scale violence or killings is nothing new, it has been happening to one country or another for decades. It's just people get desensitized to it. Venezuela is a prime example, you hear very little about how far down the rabbit hole the country is. Should more people care, yes. If you believe in self-governance they should be left to their own devices. If another country steps in, they are blamed for interfering and installing a government that is made the way that country wants, and as recent history ( Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam. Egypt, Syria, Libya, Yemen ) has shown still leads to internal conflict. So what do you do?

    I'm kinda in the Milo Yinappolis train of thought on fat shaming.
    Being fat isn't healthy or conventionally attractive.
    I think people can definitely say some very cruel things to people that are overweight. And I in no way condone that. But I think we should accept people for whatever they look like, but society should definitely encourage people to take care of their health. We just need to do it in constructive, and NOT malicious ways.

    • @danaeduran8309
      @danaeduran8309 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      I think with fat shaming something that people don't always understand is that just because they look fat doesn't mean they are. I had plenty of friends that looked fatter than me, but could run miles and lift way more than I could in weights. Body types are different, you can never know someone's health just by looking at them.

      Lincoln Wise how do you constructively tell someone they are over-weight to yhe point they will care enough to fix it and NOT be offended by it? The thing is if they had an issue with it they would do something. I dont think you can be *shamed* for weight so much as criticized for unhealthy habits and lifestyles.

    • @annaknowsu
      @annaknowsu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Calling it "fat-shaming" is distracting from the real issue. What the film is showing is just plain bullying. Once you see it for what it is you can easily separate the health issue from the real issue.

    • @dannydorito7998
      @dannydorito7998 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Kermit of Rivia you got the wrong message. Now I'm not very fond of Milo but I have to agree with that. I used to weigh 269 and I've lost over 40 pounds. Instead of accepting fat shamers, we should encourage eating healthy! Being fat or obese (excluding the BMI scale cause it's so innacurate) is just not okay. Not because it supposedly makes people less attractive, BUT because it harms your body. I see this show as nothing more but the ideas that you can now do those things cause of weight loss. I wanna see a movie where is an overweight person who struggles, accepts she can still do what she can, can still be viewed as pretty, and in the end decides to workout and the weight loss be the last resort.

    As someone who's always walked the line between being heavyset and built/muscular (I've been both extremes, and am currently somewhere in the middle) it's important that we define the difference between not judging someone for their physical appearance, and ignoring the very real health concerns with being either overweight or underweight.
    Fat-shaming is a real thing, but so is fat acceptance. It's not "okay" that someone is not in good health, but someones personal health shouldn't be a point of societal targeting.
    The message of promoting a healthier way of life through nutrition and exercise (or whatever else you may need, using prescribed medication is perfectly okay!!) is objectively a good one. However promoting it via a medium of revenge and vindication is severely unhealthy and should be reevaluated.
    TL:DR Societal fat shaming is cruel. Societal fat acceptance is dangerous. Deliver the message in a way that promotes self love, and not anger.

    Do people even know what the word promote means. When people are shown that something exists it's not considered a "promotion" of it. When the people who are fat shaming the protagonist are shown to be villians it openly discourages the act.
    Fahrenheit 451 doesn't promote book burning simply because it's shown to be a thing.
    Does this show promote murderers, school shooters, and "douchebags" because Phil mentions them?
    No obviously not. All of those examples are painted in a bad light and that openly discourages those acts to anyone that consumes the media
    Are these people actually stupid or are they just saying anything to make their argument sound reasonable? I think it may be both

    Quick opinions
    1) Verbally attacking people simply for their weight is reprehensible, period.
    2) Using the broad term "Fat Shaming" to refer to any and all negativity regarding obesity is both naive and counter-productive.
    3) Self-hate is a very real and dangerous issue, but the answer does not lie in simply shouting "fat acceptance" and moving on with our lives without taking responsibility for our own health.
    4) Getting all worked up about a TV SHOW portraying an overweight person being bullied doesn't solve anything.
    5) To place the blame of *any* of your personal issues on "societal standards" is to be irresponsible, and is to dig yourself into an unproductive rut at the expense of everyone around you.

      I guess I think the problem is not that shes fat and becomes skinny it is that she becomes skinny by not eating. Maybe if she spent the summer working out and eating healthy there would be a different response. But to me, it looks like a show that shows a overweight girl with problems, problems that get solved by not eating solid foods for en extended period of time.
      Maybe a show like this shouldn’t be targeted to middle school and high school aged kids.

      Except there is. Reviewers have pointed out the numerous faults with the writing & messages, the show pretends to be starting a conversation without having anything of substance to say, Netflix even asked a mental health expert if the show was OK, he warned not to release the show, & then they released it anyway. This show, ironically, is so pretentious about opening people's eyes to serious topics that SJWs would be the audience most likely to like this show.

    • @werpqaz
      @werpqaz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I'm not sure about the SJW controversy, but 13 reasons why is a representation of everything wrong with mental health. Hannah is manipulative, and ends up hurting people who have not wronged her. She blames those who have done relatively mild taunting to her for her death. The show also tries to state that living as a victim is better than coming forward, or seeking help.

    • @RockBandRS
      @RockBandRS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      David Hattie As someone who was bullied in school and suffered depression, I think it portrays how bullying affects the victims' mental health pretty accurately. But, then also as someone who has attempted suicide I do believe the portrayal of suicide as a good way to get back at the bullies problematic. It's also a fantasy. Bullies, by definition, lack empathy. They don't care about you when you're alive, and being dead won't change that. I think they should have promoted seeking help, and not romanticizing suicide. That's only going to push people with suicidal tendencies towards actually going through with it.

      I think it's more the whole "she wasn't able to eat at and thus lost large amounts of weight quickly" things that worries people more. As someone who's had an eating disorder, I can attest that there is a difference to losing weight in a healthy way and losing weight in a emotionally and physically damaging way.
      Personally, I can understand some of the concerns, but don't think that's the type of message the show's going for, and that it's wrong to preemptively pass judgement. It's best to leave the debate until after people can actually watch it, lol

      Yes and no. That generally is what happens when you eat less, but the point they were making is that eating less typically involves a pretty serious eating disorder, which is obviously a bad thing. I completely agreed with them on that. And I get why people are so quick to defend the show, but I personally don't trust Netflix to do series like this well. Not after 13 Reasons glamorized suicide, and Atypical made a joke out of autistic people dating.

      A lot of overweight people are that way not really because they eat more, but because their diet consists of mostly, if not only, unhealthy food. That's fairly common in America where fast foods are cheap and everywhere.

    I was a fatty when I was in primary school. and I guess I've been losing weight through out the years and never noticed and still wore the same size uniform until one day in secondary school, I wore my sisters old uniform, which was 2 sizes smaller than my own, cause I was late and ran out of clean uniform, so I got to school and like everyone was giving me looks, and I just though oh I'm wearing a smaller uniform and its weirding them out. and then one guy was like did you have lipo? and I was like wtf? and and then I realised oh I'm not as fat as i once was. and then when I got home, I told my mom, she started laughing and then we went shopping for uniforms in my newly discovered size. the end.

    I think that Debby Ryan Netflix show looks awesome and I’m super excited for it. I liked her in her Disney shows so I’m glad she’s getting more work! As for the “controversy,” people need to get the whole story before they judge something. Also, this transformation plot has been done countless times with no issue and this story even takes a pretty interesting twist on it.

      I think part of the issue is that the world is changing (as it should). And people and stories need to change as well.
      There are plenty of racist shit that people did countless times in the past that just won't work now because it is problematic.
      This obviously does not hit that far, but people need to stop giving other people image issues and treat other with respect and kindness. I'm not saying that is what this movie is trying to do. I'm not entirely sure what it's trying to do, so I'll wait and see.
      Regardless, I completely understand the response to this type of story choice, and I have my own reservations.

      Jonathon There's a large difference between someone's race and their weight. No one can control their race. Everyone can control their weight. If you don't like people making fun of you because you're fat, lose weight. "Fat Shaming" is by far the most effective method of obesity control. Fat acceptance is not a progressive movement, it's a regressive one that acts contrary to years of research and evidence that prove that a person's choice to be obese is quite literally them choosing to kill themselves, in which case they obviously don't care about themselves so why should we care about them either.

      Optical Enthusiast It just looks like they're being arseholes actually, and that's the problem - people feel justified in bullying fat people if it "encourages them to be healthy". Most of the time, it doesn't work anyway!

    • @Deltajugg
      @Deltajugg 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Optical Enthusiast I find it hard to believe that treating somebody with health issues like a subhuman, mocking his appearance which stems from other health issues, either mental or physical, can be in any way considered encouraging. I've been struggling with my weight all my life and I've been called many names, treated like shit, beaten up and people said that because I weigh more than them that I do not deserve to be happy and I don't deserve love and I should just die. That's not encouraging, that's just kicking a man when he's down. Encouragement should come from people's respect, support and understanding of other people's issues, not from amplifying the misery of a person in distress trying to break him. How come when someone gets cancer, is struggling with addiction or suffers in any other way health-wise people are helpful to them but it's so hard for everyone to NOT beat up a fat kid for looking differently than others? Talking from experience, the only thing your "society" ever encouraged me to do was put a noose around my neck, 'cause nobody has ever shown any support and help in my struggles by bullying me.

    • @Raverenz06
      @Raverenz06 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      JJJ 444 That’s such bullshit. I went to medical school and genetics play a HUGE part into obesity, as well as how you are raised. Kids have food put on their plate. If their parents eat like shit, they have to eat like shit. A 10 year old isn’t going to go get a job so he can afford to buy his own food. Some parents won’t let kids leave the table until he finishes his plate. But keep victim blaming, it makes you look so nice.

    I struggled with my weight as well during my late teens and early twenties, although my weight issue was being underweight, not over.
    When I was 15, I caught the H1N1 flu virus and dropped 15 pounds in a week, becoming underweight at 120 pounds being 5' 11" tall. After that, I battled the inability to eat. Food just wasn't satisfying and often made me sick to my stomach if I ate even half of the portions I was supposed to eat. I was pretty weak and often would get dizzy if I did anything super strenuous.
    It wasn't until the age of 21, after graduating at a community college, that I finally started to eat right and gain weight again. I'm now 24 and sitting at 140 pounds. I feel so much better than I did back then, even though there's still some holdover anxiety about food, I'm getting better.
    It's important to remember that if you struggle with being either over or underweight that you're still important, valued, and loved no matter your body type.
