  • Following on from the disappointment of Part 26 ( • Broken Big Turbo! - AU... ) back in October, we realised we needed to get our behinds into gear and sort the A5 before we give it away!
    With the freshly repaired Big BIG turbo in hand Owen set about installing that along with the new modified manifolds (Listed on our site soon)
    We managed to get onto the dyno where we exceeded our goal of 500bhp netting a healthy 507bhp and 650lbs of torque!
    The next video will be some on board video's and if we make it to the track some performance figures!

    It would be interesting to see what the performance cams would do. They should improve spool time on the large turbo. It would be interesting to see if they allow the smaller turbo to make more power since it would be working at a lower PR and may shift it around to a different airflow in the compressor map.

    I've been really looking forward to this particular episode, it was a bit of a letdown without any dyno run shots, or rolling footage. I hope you recorded some footage now and will release some more of the tuning steps with the giant turbo like you did early on in the process on that other guy's dyno with the original silver looks.

    It's absolutely no fun but turbo motors are subject to the exact same rules as naturally aspirated motors. If your motor makes 200hp NA, then it will make 400hp with 17.5 intercooled psi.
    If you can port the heads, install new cams, build custom equal length headers and get 350hp NA, then you will have 700hp with 17.5 intercooled psi of boost. The 3 psi over 1 bar (14.7psi) is making up for the losses from timing changes and heat.
    So, if you build equal length headers out of 2" schedule 40 pipe and separate the odd and even firing pulses, the back pressure will go way down while providing the same boost. Simply because the exit route is optimized and the pulses are equally spaced so it escapes much easier without smashing into each other causing constant back ups. Picture it as crowds of people being organized and funneled down hallways and they are timed to leave left right left right etc without banging into each other. Exhaust is the same, even more so through a turbo because the hallways are already overcrowded.

      Some assumptions there, 2" headers are way too big, 1.5" maybe too big for a turbo motor. You have to consider packaging on this kind of thing too, what works on paper rarely fits!

      @@DarksideDevelopments Unfortunately there aren't many options for schedule 40. 1.5 is something like 1.4 id and 2 is 1.8 id it's cast steel pipe that will never break. Great on big block turbo trucks.

    I see you are still running the factory airbox (with an upgraded intake pipe). Do you see hp gains when upgrading or modifying factory intake airboxes on TDI's? Like the RS6 airbox on the 3.0 BiTDI for example.

      We tried with none and gains were minimal on the dyno but at speed bigger would help!

    The exhaust from a Q7 has the cast ones ...bolts straight on to that car !

      Those are the ZF8 same as most late model cars. In future we will have 3.0 with that gearbox

      Doubtful, the flywheels judder easily with lots of torque

    Add an Inline fuel pump and the things will change for the better. I've added an 8bar inline fuel pump and had no low rail pressure dtc ever since and it pulls to 5200rpm without power loss.

    Does that engine have an inline fuel pump under the drivers floor next to the fuel filter? I'm just wondering if you could improvise with that.

      We remove that, it's the tank pump that can't cope.

    Probably a stupid question but thought I better ask the experts. Is there much difference in the 3.0tdi engines or is the block, head, injectors all relatively the same just the turbos etc which differs between the 204bhp and 300bhp ?? So many really nice quattros about but most of them are the lower powered versions and I imagine to get them 300+ would be a bit costly ie huge borgwarner lol cheers guys

      The engines are very similar but the gearbox is usually the weaker one on the 204hp, the ZF8 is the best one. 300+ with a tune, up to 400 with a bigger turbo.

    Look into TVS Engineering software that will sort out your clutch slipping. Have the software on my and the wife car and all I can say is it’s fantastic. You should sell this software

      We do our own and software won't fix on this gearbox! We have the maximum clutch pressure possible.

    I'm considering to buy the AC C6 facelift 3 liter TDI Quattro with the CDYA engine code. It's already remapped in Germany by the well known MTM guys.
    But i never experienced a four wheel drive car. I always drove Merc CDI's. 2.2 diesels.
    Give these cars a punch on your back when you floor it when you have 285hp?

    Love your work guys! Might be a bit biased since I drive a 2008 a5 3.0TDI at stage 2 (DPF delete, EGR Off and Tune) running 317hp/673Nm . I don't know if the info I got was accurate, but I've been told the manual Gearbox can hold up to 600hp and something like 900Nm. Seems to me you guys went with the wrong gearbox setup :) Maybe a manual next time? Keep up the good work mates. Love from Belgium

      The manual can take 420 bhp 900 Nm, the box they should have went for is the ZF 6HP28 1000Nm+

    is the gtd2872 good for 500bhp on the a5 3.0tdi?

      Not quite, it will easily see 400bhp+ but for 500bhp you would need something bigger and not an easy bolt on

      Gearbox was at it's limit with torque, this one was then swapped back to the 2566 and dropped to 400bhp and 600lbs/ft for the competition

      Thats neck and neck with a Lamborghini Gallardo SE, which is 562hp rated, and faster than a porche 996TT, so sounds in the right ballpark for a modified turbo car to me.

    would love to see all thease bits on a manual a5 just so you could put a nasty clutch in it and see what the engines really capable of or even better a manual a6 just for the lolz.

      Is there an uprated clutch for these? I don't think so. A manual will start slipping above 900Nm. The gearbox to have is the ZF6HP28.

      I have a manual A4 CCWA. I am going to try . I have the injectors and the pump kit but no big turbo yet . Now i!m trying to learn to remap the EDC17.

      @@ryanp6138 im not convinced it would be. If you start in 2nd, you save time on a gear shift and can use the full power and 4x4 even with 500bhp assuming the clutch held that. With auto, you have to go through 1st.

      Man a diesel is something else if it has 200hp it feels like 300 because of the torque really comfortable on long rides and they get incredible mpg’s

      Its fast, figures are on a video somewhere, it did drive better with 420hp and a smaller turbo but we never quote dyno only figures
