i have to say, after using salamanders extensively in competitive play since the supplement dropped, i am extremely impressed by the combos they can pull off. In all seriousness this is the best army to control the midfield or defend against rush/close combat armies. there hasn't been a single game that i didn't completely dominate the mid field, even with semi-competitive fluffy lists.
The only issue i frequently come across is gunline armies, against which this army does struggle to a degree. So the strategy i use now is that i keep 3 units of suppressors in cover in the backfield, without any character support because they use master artisans to buff themselves. they are also supported by a quad las relic contemptor dreadnought (which can also use duty eternal and wisdom of the ancients on them). this little firebase helps to fill out the brigade, contributes firepower at long range exactly where you need it, benefits from devastator doctrine on the first turn and is very mobile as well (12" or 9" movement). I ALWAYS outrange my opponents ripdides/ leviathans/ castellan robots/ centurion devastators etc. if i want to be extra cheesy i throw in 3 units of eliminators for heavy support.
meanwhile an advancing bolter/flamer/melee blob supported by many characters either draws all the firepower, claims the midfield and smashes the face of anyone that gets close or is left unchecked and reaches the enemy gunline, completely destroying it (although the latter very raraly happens, but that's a good thing because the damage dealers don't attract firepower and the midfield is still mine because the opponent always tries to stay back fro).
After mastering the playstyle of the army and learning a lot after getting wrecked in a game vs iron hands and another vs ultramarines using other, not very competitive lists (still dominated the midfield though), i haven't had a loss yet even against those same armies.

My favorite chapter. I hum the Trogdor song while burninating my enemies off the table.

Thank for the detailed information. I'm putting together a Salamander army. I will certainly use your guide to make a very fluffy flamer unit

Dragon Rage Bolts have a nifty little combo on the Primaris Captain, because they stack with the Marksman's Honors warlord trait to boost every To-Wound roll to D2. He can potentially deal 12 damage that way.

I'm a pretty new player. I watched these and surfed reddit a bit before making my purchases. I noticed a lot of other people strongly recommend Dreadnoughts with Salamanders, which made sense to me. But I didn't really hear you talk about their synergy with the chapter. Do you disagree? I went ahead and bought a venerable and a redemptor, and so far the venerable has worked okay. The redemptor less so.
I struggled a little bit against my friend who plays Mechanicum who went with a Cawl Castle strat. I'm trying to think about the different ways I can close distance on long range armies. I'm thinking of Impulsor like you mentioned but I'm not sure how effective it will be.

Using 10 intercessors to shield the advancing aggressor blob with sacrifice, a 6+fnp, +1t and -1 to hit seems quite good.

I've created my own successor chapter for salamanders. Can someone PLEASE outline exactly what I can take from the salamanders codex and what is off limits. Most seem to agree that successors get access to warlord traits, detatchment trait, strategems and can pay the 1cp to access a relic. However, all the warlord traits specifically say 'can be taken by a SALAMANDERS unit and not by a successor. Also, a lot of stratagems and warlord traits specifically mention SALAMANDERS in their effect. Can someone shed some light on this??? Thanks in advance

Cam custom chapters use all of two tactics or two halves to form one new tactic?

Does anyone find weird that the IF tank hunters is 2 cp and only works on vehicles but the Salamanders get any unit for 1 cp am I missing something?

Flame craft so that's all flame weapons in a unit, or a single model in that unit

All flame weapons in a unit, so 3 aggressors with flamestorm gauntlets could hypothetically shoot all 72 shots and hit all 72. This is if they dont move and are able to shoot twice i.e. 12 shots per single model.
