Furthermore, she’s performing these feats while executing fluid tricky melismatic phrasing. What makes her melisma (runs, riffs, etc.) so complex are her multitude of textures and use of registers while executing them. Her control of texture is just as impressive. Not only can she switch vocal textures on a single line, she has this extraordinary ability to sing in this gauzy breathy tone that she can soften to an almost hushed whisper (that she’s able to make clearer or huskier by controlling the amount of airflow she produces). Most other big-caliber vocalists don’t have the texture and nuance in their voice to produce that breathy/textured ‘mixed’ voice singing that Mariah does, let alone the breath control and sense of pitch needed to produce that type of singing; it’s deceptively difficult. Again, I’ve yet to hear another vocalist master that type of vocal control. You can’t name any other singer with greater facility with and more complex register usage, melismatic phrasing, and the agility and flexibility to deliver sudden shifts of vocal textures at will, in any register. Another thing that separates Mariah from the other greats are the acoustics and stamina she possesses in the upper belt. No other singer has the particular harmonics nor retains the same tonal quality and brightness that Mariah possesses up there - youthful, girlish and almost childlike. Other singers may be able to belt higher, but no one's tone actually blossoms and rings with a bell-like quality at those heights like Mariah's does. And her stamina, being able to phrase so high up there, rather than simply just sustaining, is impressive. Lastly, putting Christina Aguilera and agility in the same sentence is one of the the most absentmindedly laughable things I’ve ever heard. A girl who throws her voice around with no musicality has NEVER been more agile than Mariah.
