Such a good kid.. He didn't waste food, understand exactly the meaning behind our food culture, and even know how to respect the villagers who made the food for him. Usually, we don't really expect foreigner to eat our local food but we are happy to see their response when eating it. I think the villagers are kind enough to not give them spicy food, but instead it is kinda like desert (I don't like it too but I'll eat it if a guest serve it)

      For me,
If I can't eat their food, I tell them right away and apologize for it.
I can eat everything but fresh fruit.
I just cant consume fresh fruit, I always puke when I eat them. Dont know why.
But it doesnt occured on fruit based snack. Just fresh fruits.
Its not picky if the problem is my stomach isnt it?~

    • @moondust2365

@@whtvrbro6081 True. Tho, the middle ground is tongue-based. We all have different tastes, so while eating something might not end up in them puking (or getting allergies or anything actually physically bad), it'd still be a bad experience (which some people are fine with enduring for the sake of politeness, but still). But yeah, it'd be nice if they at least ate half or said sorry for not liking the food. The not eating with their hands thing is fine tho. Even within SEA, some of us prefer using spoons (especially if it's not a dry solid food) after all.
Personally, if it's not spicy or bitter, or not _too_ sour, I'd at least eat half or endure eating all of it. But yeah, I'd at least try. If I *super* don't like it (or outright have a bad reaction to it), I'd say sorry, but at that point I wouldn't force myself.
As for being picky, I'd say it's fine as long as it's within a range of available food. Like, I'd rather someone just not like a certain dish (or a certain ingredient in a dish and taking it out) or heck not eat at all than actively asking for something that isn't there. Tho, I guess that'd just be sympathy from me since I also don't like certain things and either not put it in the first place (like if I was offered vinegar) or take it out (like liver and stuff). I'm a lot more enduring in a stranger's house than at a relative's house or our own tho lol.

@@moondust2365 agree. While it's understandable that some foreigners may not like the food it's really rude to just leave it like that. If I was the host I would be sad too since I don't know the guest's reaction and would think that there may be something wrong with my food. As the host I'd appreciate it more if they take some more bite or just tell me that they don't like it. That way I'll know that I didn't serve my guests something bad and it's just a matter of taste. I would snap too if I was Izuru

If you're visiting a new country and you're reluctant to try the food served to you, it will be considered as rude everywhere in the world tbh. And this is a school trip and I guess one of the 'mission' for making such overseas trip in the first place is to experience other culture so I guess his groupmates already failed that purpose. What a shame. Going to a new country to experience and refused to even experience it. I get why he got angry. I would be fuming too.

I don' think "rice with sugar" is that common in Indonesia. This is just a wild guess but one possibility of the "rice-sugar" Izuru is talking about is a traditional food in West Java named "gulampo" or "peuyeum ketan". Ketan is a type of sticky rice and it's a common ingredient to make sweet dish. Peuyeum ketan is fermented rice, when you take it at the right time it tastes sweet and a little bit alcoholic. As for gulampo, it's a sugar added peuyeum ketan.
Edit: sorry I forgot the Indo word for "peuyeum ketan", yes it is "tape ketan" 😭

    .
for your information, as indonesian many of us loves eating/drinking something sweet because probably we are in hot weather all the time except when raining. it has nothing to do with preservation, sticky rice will still go bad if its given sugar or not

  • @KhoiruunisaRF
    @KhoiruunisaRF ปีที่แล้ว +2

I respect Izuru for that, yes I also don't like to waste food. But I disagree if you can't refuse food you won't like to eat, as some people in Indonesia also have their own diet. For me, I prefer to be honest & politely refuse the food I can't eat, then going to search for the food I can eat by myself. With this, I wouldn't force myself to eat what I can't/don't like to eat & minimalize waste from leftovers.
There is an exception of course, for example in an emergency like when I go travelling somewhere (like Izuru has been through), where there are fewer options as to what I can eat, and/or there's the probability the gap between the next meal is long enough to make me starve & I have to do some activity in between, I would eat anything just for survive. So I think it can be situational.

the thing is, these friends go abroad to experience the culture and cuisine of the country they’re visiting. so it is rude that they simply refuse to even try. i would understand if they try and not like it but to outright refusing to try when they didn’t even know how it tastes is ridiculous.
also keep in mind that the host has kindly accepted to host them there on her house, the least they can be is grateful

5:23 As much as, especially considering the more conservative culture here in Asia, that definitely seems like a tough situation, it's not like was _that_ rude, tho again, depends on the family and whatnot. I can't speak for the family, of course, but the spoon part would've been perfectly fine most likely. The not eating much is a bit eh. I'd be more forgiving if they ate at least half, but not eating at all or just one spoonful is kinda yikes, tho we do have different tastes, so I kinda understand, but yeah, at least some of them tried, I guess. Everyone being able to eat the banana chips tho makes sense lol.
Also, fun fact, leftovers (if on a plate that was eaten on) are typically fed to pets since everyone below upper-middle class here in SEA (minus Singapore) can't really afford "proper" dog/cat food lol. Maybe that's a bit inaccurate, but hopefully close enough, but it could also just be a Philippines thing and I'm projecting it to all of SEA. XD
6:05 Now that's _too_ much politeness lol. If it's inedible (either for you specifically because of a condition or in general [like if it's something obvious like rocks or something arguable like moldy bread]), I'd call it out. Politely, yes, by using polite words, but I wouldn't force myself to eat it lol. Note that I said arguable for moldy bread since where I'm from (and I'm assuming it's the same for the rest of SEA), if it's just the outside that's moldy, we take the moldy part out and just eat the bread (tho some of us prefer heating the bread first after taking out the mold just to be sure; either by microwaving, toasting, or grilling). Of course, if a guest didn't like to eat moldy bread, I'd be perfectly fine with it. My parents might just force the idea that it's still fine to eat tho. XD
6:40 I guess? Tho, from my knowledge of history, I assume it's just us in maritime SEA trying to adapt the western concept of chips to local produce, and someone had the idea to use bananas, but because bananas are generally sweet, they decided to use sugar instead of salt, and it became a hit. The food whose origins _actually_ lie on preservation are typically salted, pickled, vinegar-ed, or smoked, as far as I know.
7:20 I'm somewhat like that with my classmates lol. Tho, usually it's more of a "how small is your appetite?" thing for me, since I know that food isn't actually wasted over here (unless you count feeding pets leftovers a waste of food). XD
7:30 That EN translation in chat is probably more accurate. It's the drying part that's typically done for the sake of preservation. Adding sugar is usually just adapting it either to local tastes or to the taste of the food.
7:42 Yeah, that sorta thing would've been fed to pets (or strays, even) here. Tho, for a burger with one bite, they'd probably give it to staff here as well, but to think they'd use that as an excuse to not pay him is just yikes. That's not a food wastage problem, that's a labor problem right there.
