In military terms he didn't almost die. If he tripped an IED and it didn't go off he didn't almost die. If he tripped an IED and it blew of both legs and he took a bunch of shrapnel then he almost died.
Funny thing is a F-14’s ejection handles sit next to the pilot’s head and not between the legs.
Just for the record a cag (commander, air group. Co of a carrier strike group) is traditionally from the aviation section of the navy. Meaning he's a pilot.

This is not a real story at least not of a naval captain. Pre requisite to taking command of a CSG is previous naval aviation experience.
It's good to know that the F-14's ejection system uses loops on the headrest and they are in fact not located between the pilot's or the RIO's legs. It's a nicely made up story though.
I have 2 things to say
