A city builder colony sim at this scale is definitely what I've been searching for. Glad to see there is a good amount of progress being made in development. I'll be keeping an eye on this one so thanks for giving games the spotlight they deserve.
It’s like dwarf fortress
But with more factions and easier ui and controls
You should try dwarf fortress if you liked this one, just take into account that it’s very unoptimized so I recommend setting a limit to how much dwarfs and citizens come to 125
This is also because there is more than 200 z levels that need to render because yes you can mine to lava, building structures is tricky and base dwarf fortress doesn’t let you build that much unless you use dfhack
I just impulsively bought this last weekend and I freaking love it. Everything about it from music to mechanics is just amazing. I think I'm an unpopular opinion though when I say I actually love the graphics the way they are. They're so unique and well done in my opinion.
No I think you're right. Plus keeping the graphics like this is less taxing on the system allowing for larger scale.
Is there any way you can increase the size of the icons and the numbers in the UI? The game looks good, but that stuff is _way_ too small for my eyes.
Agreed 100%, the style fits the game
I hope they have an isometric camera option in later updates.
Graphic style reminds of MAX 2: Assault and Exploration (an old strategy game)
My giants always go insane and start murdering everyone they're in close proximity to, but my giant police do a really good job of keeping that in check. Until they start killing everyone they're in close proximity to. The circle of giant life!
Roll Beta V59. It’s a much better version of the game and pretty stable compared to V58
One thing I tested that I'm glad I did is, doesn't matter if you bulldoze or pave or build over forageables, they will still grow back in the same spot no matter what if you later remove the buildings.
Same with trees even if you clear cut them, they don't spread, they just grow back in the same spots.
Also making tiny crates in storage wastes like half of space, only the boxes count as storage place, the little decoration part is mandatory for each piece. So 1x2 boxes only has 1 box while 1x6 has 5 and only 1 wasted space. (the "little square" is just decoration and is never interacted with and doesn't even need to be accessible, same for things like beds. The only thing that needs a path to is the big squares).
Coziness doesn't make people happier, I don't think, it makes them rest more efficiently. So you always want that 100%...
I started playing this game today and love it so far.
Its so relaxing to watch the little dudes working and listen to the great music.
i think this game would make a decent miniseries to run
Does he ever do miniseries?
@@Jordy2277 He used to! E.g. for Gnomoria
The grumpiness of giants is keenly connected to their ability to do anything. Because they can do anything they're expected to do everything, so it just makes them a bit grumpy...
Executioners throughout a lot of societies everywhere had wildly different status. Japan would give disgraced Ronin a new job being the lord's sword tester. How did they test swords? By cutting off prisoner heads! They had a fairly comfortable life even if they were ostracized by the villagers.
IMO the devs should change the building footprint to include the walls and just not the floor space. Having to mentally keep track of where walls will be added is annoying.
When you are placing a room that button right next to what material will toggle walls being placed and will let you pick door spots too
To be honest the building mechanism should be improved, it takes a lot of time to learn these things like autowalls and simple things like building a door, all things considered, the game is not really finished as stated in the open disclaimer and you should learn how to play before arguing, not real gamer
You don't even need the walls
@@TheColonels64 14:20 case in point. It's annoying.
It's only one dev ;)
Idk what took me so long to subscribe but I genuinely think this channel proves to be of great assistance for those who buy Indie games but don't want to blindly trust the quality of them.
This game looks hella interesting, and im glad you spoke up on it.
The background music is really good.
Yeah and I like all the little animations of jobs being performed, like hunters breaking down carcasses.
been a fan of this game for a long time, happy to see you doing a video! Kinda dense at the beginning, but if youre a fan of rimworld or dwarf fortress, this is a great game with a lot of potential
Had this in my list for a few months now. Glad you covered it, Splat. I'm definitely going to pick it up now.
11:34 Grow some zucchini in your backyard. It's a lot like golf, you have to be doing it to be excited about it.
"Yeah! Zucchini!" SplatterCat 2021
Is that why it hurts when he walks 😎
>we are never gonna have 400 chairs...
on the next episode of Spiffing Brit: Songs of Syx is a wonderful little game where you can absolutely wreck the economy producing just chairs!
Yes! This game needed more attention!
This looks like it's heavily inspired by Dwarf Fortress. Looks very interesting!
The creator even said inspired by Pharaoh, Dwarf Fortress and Rome Total War.
The combat is even designed with unit cards, formations and length/width/flanking etc
@@MrShamus22 nice
Now that you're saying it in every video, I thought I'd come by and mention that "stopgap" does not mean what you think it means.
Cheers.
Fuck. Yes. This is exactly what I bought RimWorld for and I was immediately disappointed by the very small scale of it, the game is good, but the tiny scale really breaks my interest
RimWorld is a fun story generator. It's good for small stories of survival and failure. It's more intimate which makes it unique imo.
i prefer starting near the river because of farming is MUCH more efficient next to the water.
Looks like Total Annihilation map.
TA was so good. I remember when Starcraft was released a year later and became all the rage. I tried it and thought it looked and played like a kiddie game compared to the complexity and coolness of TA.
I wish I could like this twice. There seem to be so few who remember TA. I still watch the intro cinematic sometimes when I want chills
@@OneEvanescent Not so few ;) . There's an entire community that built around the open-source Spring Engine that was originally built to emulate TA. Check out Zero-K on Steam, it's probably the most popular of the TA-style games built on that engine.
TA... best RTS ever :)
I'm already hearing the "Hey hey, people..."
Giving a like for Splatty correcting himself when he said "triangles." (I would've given a like anyway, but extra cudos for cathing this terrible mistake!)
The graphics are heavily pixelated but do have a kind of charm to them. They kind of remind me of the old SSI games, like Warwind.
Looks like DF but it’s not a major pain in the A to do things. Definitely keeping an eye on that one.
With tiny farms like that, no wonder you have food problems. Build at least a 20x30 tile farm of each available plant type. Use at least 6 people per farm and build a water canal on at least two sides of each field for irrigation. Never build over wild plants! Plan your settlement around them as much as possible, they are an infinite source of food in the summer and fall seasons since they almost immediately grow back after being harvested, unlike your farm fields which only yield a harvest once per year.
The amount of times SplatterCat mentions "in all honesty" leads me to believe that he is having some type of existential crisis.. ;)
He actually said it while I was reading your comment, which was pretty surreal.
It's "stopgap" I always notice him saying (because he uses it incorrectly).
REG: Yeah. All right, Stan. Don't labour the point. And what have they ever given us in return?!
XERXES: The aqueduct?
REG: What?
XERXES: The aqueduct.
REG: Oh. Yeah, yeah. They did give us that. Uh, that's true. Yeah.
COMMANDO #3: And the sanitation.
LORETTA: Oh, yeah, the sanitation, Reg. Remember what the city used to be like?
REG: Yeah. All right. I'll grant you the aqueduct and the sanitation are two things that the Romans have done.
MATTHIAS: And the roads.
REG: Well, yeah. Obviously the roads. I mean, the roads go without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation, the aqueduct, and the roads--
COMMANDO: Irrigation.
XERXES: Medicine.
COMMANDOS: Huh? Heh? Huh...
COMMANDO #2: Education.
COMMANDOS: Ohh...
REG: Yeah, yeah. All right. Fair enough.
COMMANDO #1: And the wine.
COMMANDOS: Oh, yes. Yeah...
FRANCIS: Yeah. Yeah, that's something we'd really miss, Reg, if the Romans left. Huh.
COMMANDO: Public baths.
LORETTA: And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now, Reg.
FRANCIS: Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it. They're the only ones who could in a place like this.
COMMANDOS: Hehh, heh. Heh heh heh heh heh heh heh.
REG: All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
I will say on the resources being spread out on beg maps. While it may not seem ideal, setting up a small outpost with its own stock pile and dorms may be your best solution. It's pretty realistic too since a lot of mining towns start solely based on access to one resource and became self sustaining later.
I played the demo and it's a brilliant game. Will be getting it for sure.
the dude who die of heat exhaustion just left a shadow on the crate lol
When you're placing crates in the warehouse or any other storage containers you can press the + to make a larger set of crates that are way way more spec efficient. I think you could've fit twice as much storage in that first warehouse.
I do not find this anywhere like Rimworld. However the is another game I comapre it too.
The way you build houses reminds me a lot of Theme Hospital/Two point Hospital/Startopia Room building.
I think everyone else missed the Tai Lopez reference.
KNOWLEDGE
FUEL UNITS
beyond a normal colony builder.*
*what a colony builder ought to be
Warehouses are Super Important. They almost flopped my last playthrough. Usually you have to build big ones, and around your Bulk production. Aka Farms and production areas. The more a citizen have to walk, the slower gathering becomes, by multiplication. Aka travel time instead of 1-2, becomes 4, 6, 10, 20. And after that, they just collect nothing.
I like the nerd castle. I live in a nerd castle myself.
3:10 literally had me looking for green triangles for a second.
Executioners were very high status wise
fun fact the humans are the newest race to the game, the first are the Dondorians which are kinda dwarfish.
ROCK AND STONE!!
If it's scaled to hundreds of colonists it not "like rimworld" anymore :D
Automation in this game looks great :)
Dwarf fortress but on the surface and focusing on humans with actual graphics. Nice.
"Everybody gets the Kings backwash!" :D
Gosh SplatterCat, you exposed my mind to facts !
We need some splat merch that says "and so anyways" lol
Wow was not expecting that gorgeous background music
Oh man Iver been playing with the new rimworld expansion, and the new medieval mod, and the thing that got me was that I can't have a full city. The game kinda breakers down with more than ~20ish pawns for me. This definitely looks like something I'd love.
Just keep in mind that there really isn’t any personal issues. Just need issues.
I too, rub my eyes on an open flame. It's oddly relaxing.
executioner was a highly respected position in the middle ages. like dependent on the country, but still. you are the punishing hand of the ruler, despising the judgment on the wicked, passing their souls to god for further judgment. some executioners were known around the country like rock stars. they were still sort of a pariahs but not in a shameful or discriminatory way.
some societies looked down on them and made them live outside the main living area.
"Rimworld scaled to castle defense levels" - so like Dwarf Fortress?
trickle-down backwashenomics? in MY grimdark low fantasy hellscape?
Fun fact the lowest was a knacker. They had to carry the buckets of crap out of the streets.
yeah...do not make gemstones or sith ore any kind of priority for your starting town...you need a functioning empire and a just ludacrous amount of knowledge to research the ability to mine either, let alone both
When farming, you can dig water trenches, boosting the irrigation. If the irrigation value is 100%, your farm will yield 10% more output. Never explained anywhere and I found it by just reading the tooltip and wondering how to get irrigation. Turns out you can dig watertrenches anywhere so thats how you do that, making it essential since..well..who doesnt wonna have 10% more food?
Also your warehouse is pretty bad. With the mousewheel you can make crateracks bigger or smaller to fit larger structures and give more store room. Massively so. But yeah a lot of that stuff would be explained to oyu with the use of tooltips aka just hoveirng oyur mouse over icons but the game itself will often not go far beyond that. Even though it has an ingame way to look up things it's still a bit wonky here and there and unfinished. So take this episode more as a showcase what the game looks like but, for the love of your gaming experience, not as a guide.
demo on steam. I would personally luv at least slightly better graphics. I know this is not a high end graphics "type" of game, but something a bit more visually appealing would be nice.
I have been addicted to this lately. Lots to learn though. You can accept only partial numbers of of immigrants, you don’t have to accept all of them. My food issues went away after I learned that.
Playing the new immigrant update made me learn that very quickly when I was on year 25 with every generation starving to death.
A big part of these types of civilisation builder games is managing population growth.
More people is great for filling in roles in the society but if you don't have enough food/resources/beds etc to support them it can cause a doomspiral.
I would really like to see this game have an improvement with the graphics, otherwise feels pretty interesting! Wouldn't mind checking a series on it too! Maybe I'll check the vods from twitch to get more from it. Really enjoyed it!
There are graphics in this game? All I see is endless squares and giant pixels.
Well the better it looks the harder it will run think about 10k people walking in 4k around i think any pc will blow up
At first glance, I'm turned off by the terrible graphics, but it's supposed to be really good if you can get past that.
@@ItsGroundhogDay i really like the game but at some point it feels like a grind to get a crazy big army and food with armor
@@gustavmeier1953 Really hard to eat!
Did any struggle with the look/design of the game but decided to buy it anyway and ended up enjoying it
I love the design and so does my poor overworked 3070 lol
This would make a great playthrough
Quoted the Princess Bride will buy 10/10
I had to deal with worker strikes harshly in order to survive a bad famine, which escalated into a full on race war. 5/5
I kinda like how this game feels, gonna try it!
The vegans are the easiest to start with. I think they have the best stats for a mixed area. You don't want a barren area. Messes with the economy. Which is the whole game.
I'm still a bit confused with how I feel about the graphics, not bothered too much, just an odd feeling. Given the scale of maps and city you can build I can understand it. The rest of the game I'm rather enthused by, everything seem to flow and with good management tools it sure looks fun.
I'm bothered by the fact that the terrain looks so bad and blends together so thoroughly in it's awfulness that you need to turn on an identifier overlay to be able to tell what is what. Once it gets covered with structures it looks acceptable though, so that's a plus.
This game reminds me a lot of Dwarf Fortress.
13:47 its their right to lick rats if they want to
My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die.
That right there is almost enough for me to buy the game outright, what an opening quote... big boots now buddys.
Game looks like a calculator sim to me
This is Stronghold, lol.
A modern version of it.
OMG IT IS! HOW DIDNT I SEE THAT BEFORE?
@@riotriguez5854 haha, I love that game. Still play it occasionally, so this game is definitely on my, "must play," list.
Who remembers the game Populous?
YAY ZUCCINI
I lmao'ed so hard
i already had it, its a really good game
Rimworld but bigger and more expansive is dwarf fortress
Speaking as a Very Hairy Old Bloke, often referred to as a Rampaging Wildman...
I approve of this.
you could have moved the road so that the building doesn't overlap it
Also available on GOG.
Sypholon....?? STD based ore?? I mean, anything is possible in a fantasy based world:/
Do a series of this game please!
yeah, nice game.
I love it
So this is just dwarf fortress without the individual characters and anarchism?
"iam accepting all immigrants because why not" also: "i tend to die to starvation, i have no idea why"
This dude said charcoal burners tanners and executioners were low in medieval society lmao
It feels much too clunky to be honest. It has a lot of potential but it needs a great deal of polishing
describing this as "like rimworld" is a massive insult to it lmao
🖤
can you construct a buildng in like L shape - or only rectangles?
what's preventing One from just doing one giant ever growing building?
zucchini hurrah!
Looks good. I'm a long time player of Dwarf Fortress but getting increasingly disillusioned. The idea is great but it's just getting so buggy and old bugs not fixed. Tarn needs to get more professional. Nice to see some alternatives.
So... is this basically Rimworld + Stronghold + Total War?
You have food problems because you do the opposite of every guide. You should have built hunting lodges first, along with trade depot (import and export) this would allow you to sell excess items and trade for the clay you need, foraging/hunting will always outproduce farms early on. Building farms before 50 pop is something you should always avoid, hunters and berry gathers AoE style is where its at early game.
Whelp, I'm sold. Why? Why must you hurt my wallet so? :P
How do you NOT get excited about zucchini?
nice
I would love to play this but the graphics are so gritty I can't really see what I'm looking at
Mornin’
the graphic reminds me of rpgmaker
Is it bad to always use a huge map?
for your food problems, do you keep the population to automatically allow new immigrants? Sometimes my city will skyrocket by a few hundred citizens then it'll slowly decline because I didnt prepare the food for the new immigrants, Generally I place a new major source of food for every hundred or so pop I think my current city is 1.3k at 6/7 days of food but I'll have to log in soon to verify
