I like that he finally shuts up when the guitars overwhelm him - like they do to everyone who hears it for the first time. NO ONE can resist, lol! Man they are a fantastic band and even though well-known to us classic rockers, they are still underrated. A top five American band for sure. Imagine what music they would have made if not for the tragic plane crash. They were really coming into their own, and Steve Gaines was opening another chapter and really re-energizing the band. Check out Skynyrd's live Free Bird in Oakland 1977. It's freakin' stunning.
"I was not ready for that.." No. Most newcomers aren't. And most end up falling in love with probably the most epic guitar play in history. Welcome, brother.
Seriously, when you had to get up and leave I nearly fell off my chair! Love it... This is not intended to be a put down of newer music - there's definitely good stuff out there - but the majority of popular bands back in the day were just on another level of musicianship and songwriting. There were no crazy studio effects to hide behind, no social media fanbase, you had to blow people's minds with your music, pure and simple. You had to be a PLAYER. Beatles, Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, The Who, Hendrix, Cream, Yes, Allman Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, on and on - these were creators of true masterpieces. This song is almost FIFTY YEARS OLD! I don't know how many of today's hits will be blowing minds in 50 years. Enjoyed your video, you have open ears and an open heart which will make your life a much richer journey. PEACE
This was my high school class song from 1979. We had over 1000 graduates that year, the largest ever for that high school (new high school split the classes after us). It tickles me to see you enjoy this song as much as we did then, and still do today. When my son married in 2017, our mother-son dance was to Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Another timeless classic rock. This style was known as Southern Rock back in the 70's. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Doobie Brothers, Allman Brothers, etc.
In the day, there was no bigger encore song than Freebird. And they were huge, headlined stadium tours. You’ve heard some of their other songs, guaranteed.
I agree! Isn’t that the one where they opened fornthe Rolling Stones? It was smokin’ hot! They could have played all night and the audience went wild for them! Great suggestion! ❤️
Man is it ever a bending/vibrato extravaganza...it takes alot of finger endurance to play it correctly...and i have been playing 20 years, but that solo still gives me pains. I think it's pretty much one of the hardest solos I've learned to play when you consider all the bending in it.
The genre is Southern Rock. Other bands in this genre include The Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels, Molly Hatchet, to name a few. Lynyrd Skynyrd first released this song in 1973.
The lead singer here died in a plane crash a couple years after this song was released. The first lyrics you liked "If I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me" were almost prophetic.
Was fortunate enough to go to a Skynyrd concert. Was so AWESOME!!! At the end drummer gave me his drumsticks. Will never forget it. Long live Skynyrd!!!!
On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 passenger aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed in a wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi. Chartered by the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd from L&J Company of Addison, Texas, it was near the end of its flight from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Lead vocalist/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray all died as a result of the crash while 20 others survive
My favorite reaction vids are when people hear Freebird for the first time, next favs are a any Stevie Ray Vaughn, Righteous Brothers, Chris Stapleton & Haley Rinehart's Creep.
Music in the 60s 70s and 80s was some really good stuff. Unbelievable instrumentals and vocals that just blow your mind. Went to countless concerts in my time and some of the best memories I've ever had.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was Southern Rock at its finest. Their best known song was probably "Sweet Home Alabama", and I strongly suggest that you check out "Simple Man" and "Gimme Three Steps", a very funny song that is a true story.
Lynyard Skynrd was a 70s Southern Rock Band and the main members died in the a plane crash in October of 1977. "That Smell" off their last album has some of their best guitar work of most of their songs. There are many great songs for you to check out, Tuedays Gone, Simple Man, Sweet Home Alabama and What's your Name are just a few you should check out.
I loved your reaction, man! The first time I heard Skynyrd was in 1975 and it was Freebird. I was all of 16 years old and I reacted like you did! I STILL love that song till this day! When a song makes you feel like you are hearing it for the first time...it is definitely timeless. That's how I feel each time I listen to it! Take a listen to Simple Man, Call Me The Breeze, Ballad of Curtis Loew, Saturday Night Special.
I know I'm ten months late, but I just caught this video, and I'm an avid Lynyrd Skynyrd fan. I totally loved your reaction. It's very cool checking out a much younger generation react to the music I grew up with. The absolute finest decade for Rock-n-Roll and R&B was the 1970's. My top two genres of music.✌
Song was written in tribute to Duane Allman, lead guitar and founder of the Allman Brothers Band, who had died in a motorcycle accident. The guitar “bird” notes were a signature of Duane’s slide guitar style. Duane also played slide on the Eric Clapton (Derek And The Dominoes) megahit “Layla”, the “bird” notes are especially noticeable in the coda of the song.
I've noticed the last couple years that "Freebird" has finally unseated Stairway as the #1 rock song in a lot of the annual year end Top 100 countdowns. I would be hard pressed to think of one more deserving.
@@daughterdirtysouth WHAT?! Who told you that. It was a takeoff on the name of their HS PE teacher "Leonard Skinner" who gave them crap about their long hair and said they'd never amount to anything. That comes straight from an interview with the band back in the 70's.

I got to see them at Willie's Picnic in Tulsa, OK in 1977 a few months before their plane crash. Following a performance at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, South Carolina, on October 20, 1977, the band boarded a chartered Convair CV-240 bound for Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they were scheduled to appear at LSU the following night. After running out of fuel the pilots attempted an emergency landing before crashing in a heavily forested area five miles northeast of Gillsburg, Mississippi. Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, along with backup singer Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray were killed on impact. Other band members (Collins, Rossington, Wilkeson, Powell, Pyle, and Hawkins), tour manager Ron Eckerman, and several road crew members suffered serious injuries. Ronnie was the lead singer and main spokesperson of the group. lynyrdskynyrd.com/

You'll have to react to Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man, Ballad of Curtis Loew, Gimmie three steps, Tuesday's Gone, Sweet Home Alabama.. It's southern rock!
Check out the great Live version soon . The one in Oakland 3 months before the plane crash is really good . I personally like the one down south a little more than a year before the accident in 1977 . That's my favorite clip of this brilliant song .
Lynyrd Skynyrd is a southern rock band, another one of the most famous songs the original band wrote was sweet home Alabama. You may have never heard of the band for one main reason, the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and 5 other band members died in a plane crash in 1977, they named the band Lynyrd Skynyrd after Ronnie’s strict high school gym teacher and they decided to name the band after him, Ronnie’s brother Johnny Van Zant decided to regroup the band adding some new members and the surviving members of the original band, 10 years after the plane crash, some members survived the crash, hence the first album produced, “The Last of The Street Survivors” now, the band is ending they’re final and different tour called, “The Last of The Street Survivors Farewell Tour” back to the crash, it was a McDonnell Douglas Convair CV 240, it was a 40 year old plane, Aerosmith turned down the exact same plane that the band took, right before the plane started taxing to the runway, Ronnie said, “whatever happens while I’m on this plane, the lord will choose what happens” I think, but what people think is that the planes dual propeller engines must have burnt fuel extra fast somehow because the plane had enough fuel to make it to the exact location with plenty to spare, or the engines went bad because one of the surviving band members from the crash said that as they were going down, he saw fuel being dumped from the plane, so that there would be no fire, and that’s what saved a good majority of the crash, but anyways an airport worker, a couple days after the crash as another CV 240 was starting up it’s engines, it shot out massive flames burning up a lot of fuel. That’s all I got
Lynyrd Skynrd, is a southern rock back from Jacksonville FL, they were at their prime in the early 70s, the adapted the name from the name of their coach or gym teacher and Free Bird is their biggest hit, along with Sweet Home Alabama and several others. Most of the band was killed in a plane crash in Oct 1977.

Welcome young man. You will never be the same after hearing that. 70s rock baby.
"I was not ready for that.."
No. Most newcomers aren't. And most end up falling in love with probably the most epic guitar play in history. Welcome, brother.
Ballad of Curtis Loew my friend. It is a ballad of a young white boy who loved to hear an old black man play the Blues on his guitar
How many people have told you to watch the 1977 live Oakland concert?
Nah, Knebworth!! Less focus on the crowd and much longer outro.
Yes
@@candicescott7176 but, not all of the Knebworth show was available.
George Price , true, but the best Freebird.
wes alker The BEST EVER!!! Must see! You’ll never be the same!
In the day, there was no bigger encore song than Freebird. And they were huge, headlined stadium tours. You’ve heard some of their other songs, guaranteed.
You have to do the live version. Knebworth 1976!
Or the live version at Oakland Coliseum in 1977
I agree! Isn’t that the one where they opened fornthe Rolling Stones? It was smokin’ hot! They could have played all night and the audience went wild for them! Great suggestion! ❤️
Absolutely! Watch it live..unbelievable talent behind that guitar..
You absolutely have to watch a live version of this. Will blow your mind.
Shannon Pace I got to see this same tour back in 1976!
Oooh this is nice
-everyone: just wait till the solo Holmes :)
It's called string bending & hammer-ons with pull-offs mixed in. It's all Allen Collins r.i.p.
Man is it ever a bending/vibrato extravaganza...it takes alot of finger endurance to play it correctly...and i have been playing 20 years, but that solo still gives me pains. I think it's pretty much one of the hardest solos I've learned to play when you consider all the bending in it.
It's called one hell of a guitarist.
Listen to either "Tuesday's Gone" or "Simple Man" next !
Skynyrd is Southern Rock and to us Southerners that is Classic Rock
Russell Barwick im from Michigan and they’re classic rock to me too. That good ol classic feel good rock.
More like your official regional sound.
@@blankslate6590 Most would say country music is. However, we are sixty miles from the Hip Hop capital.....the ATL and 150 miles from Nashville.
It is Classic Southern Rock One of the Best Bands the WORLD has ever Known.
The genre is Southern Rock. Other bands in this genre include The Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels, Molly Hatchet, to name a few.
Lynyrd Skynyrd first released this song in 1973.
Blackfoot?
The lead singer here died in a plane crash a couple years after this song was released. The first lyrics you liked "If I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me" were almost prophetic.
there is a lot of great Skynyrd songs some I like are Gimme Three Steps, Whats Your Name, The Ballad of Curtis Loew, Down South Jukin', Tuesdays Gone
Personally one of my favs too is That’s smell
Love Curtis Loew, I haven't heard that one in ages.
@@joshjensen9244 Whiskey bottle, brand new car, oak tree you're in my way😂

I’m sure he did
On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 passenger aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed in a wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi.
Huge SRV fan too, but they gotta watch it live to get the whole experience!
Robert Johnson , definitely live! Freebird at Knebworth would've been far better than this studio version too!
@@robertjohnson1681 Stevie Ray Vaughan: Voodoo Chile live!

Whipping post live at Fillmore East!
Alo gotta check the instrumental "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". 🔥
I was jamming on that song in 1983 last week of the Navy!! I am happy that it still touch the SOUL..
Music in the 60s 70s and 80s was some really good stuff. Unbelievable instrumentals and vocals that just blow your mind. Went to countless concerts in my time and some of the best memories I've ever had.
This is like going to grandpa's attic and opening a trunk and finding a pile of gold.
Very well said there
Yeah, during the vocals I was thinking, "you ain't seen nothin' yet."
Welcome to the wonderful world of classic rock. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.
"Gimme Three Steps" sone of the funniest Southern Rocksongs you will ever hear.
Great tune. Funny story telling at it's finest.

The one from Knebworth when they opened for the Stones!!!!
Saw them in 1976 and they blew everyone away. Great reaction! Instant subscribe 😀
One of the greatest bands of all time my guy.
Simple Man, Ballad of Curtis Lowe, That Smell, Sweet Home Alabama and on and on. Saw them in 77, great show.
Very nice!!!

Alternative?????? Hell no, southern rock from before you were even a thought. The 70s. Top 5 songs ever written
The hunt. I get so excited when someone discovers skynyrd for the first time
This song came out in the 70’s.. southern rock
Short-timers in the Navy in 1983 play that song!! God bless that SOUND.
This song was played at my fiance's funeral , it was one of her favorite songs from them .

Throughout the latter 70's and well into the 80's "Freebird" and "Stairway To Heaven" were the 2 most requested songs on rock radio.
I've noticed the last couple years that "Freebird" has finally unseated Stairway as the #1 rock song in a lot of the annual year end Top 100 countdowns. I would be hard pressed to think of one more deserving.
Still are in most cases
Lynyrd and Skynyrd was the last names of the two brothers in their cousins that made up the band.
@@daughterdirtysouth WHAT?! Who told you that. It was a takeoff on the name of their HS PE teacher "Leonard Skinner" who gave them crap about their long hair and said they'd never amount to anything. That comes straight from an interview with the band back in the 70's.
@@7thkansascav468 sorry about that my brother told me this story about 20 years ago. so I just Googled and you were right. My brother is a ding dong, I should probably Google some other things that he's told me. LoL

Welcome to the 70s young man!! We are glad to call you brother. I was 18 when that song came out. It was an anthem for our generation. We are happy you are moved by this great song. There's so much more 70s rock to enjoy. Thank you for reacting to this. I just subscribed to your channel. Keep up the good work!
The guitar solo is actually 3 guitars battling .... watch the live version and you can see ....its amazing to watch
You'll have to react to Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man, Ballad of Curtis Loew, Gimmie three steps, Tuesday's Gone, Sweet Home Alabama.. It's southern rock!
How to go through life not knowing who Lynyrd skynyrd is. Like. This song was my whole childhood
Out of all the reaction videos I have watched, this young man has the best broadcast presence. I could see him hosting his own show.
Check out the great Live version soon . The one in Oakland 3 months before the plane crash is really good . I personally like the one down south a little more than a year before the accident in 1977 . That's my favorite clip of this brilliant song .
"Tuesdays Gone " " Gimme 3 Steps " "Sweet Home Alabama" Many more .
Other songs: "Tuesday's gone" and "Simple Man"
True that, great songs!

I can see you are already a "Skynyrd" fan. Keep looking there's more.
