    I have the fully loaded version of this bike, and have been riding it for about a year now. Few things to note:
    - The default Road mode doesn't do the bike justice. While its tame for riding around town and has plenty of punch, if you want to get snappy instant throttle response you need to use the Dynamic or Dynamic pro option. BMW should have just enabled those from the factory instead of making it an option.
    - Adaptive suspension is amazing, very confidence inspiring and love how the bike totally transforms as soon as you go from Road mode to Dynamic (Also changes suspension settings). Passenger mode is amazing too, the bike's height increases to compensate for the passenger.
    - Default sound is meh, threw a SC Project in there and it sounds much better now.
    - Tech is amazing. It was buggy at first but most bugs got fixed after the update at the dealership. BMW's app is the best compared to every other manufacturer and shows amazing data about all the rides. All this is recorded automatically once the app is setup, and can be exported to formats recognizable by a bunch of software.
    - Little things like heated grips, auto cancelling turn signals etc make a huge difference. BMW has so much tech all over the place, you do not even realize you need all this tech till you have it. There are a tons of things that give you peace of mind like tire pressure monitoring system, cornering abs etc that work behind the scenes.
    - Few cons: Huge tail, get a fender eliminator kit. A bit on the heavy side but you wont notice it at all while riding as the weight disappears while riding. The TFT screen is amazing but gets fingerprints and smudges easily. Get a screen protector for that.
    Overall very happy with the bike. Its the perfect blend of practical and fun, and probably one of the best bikes for riding with a passenger. If you like tech, this is it.

    I’ve had this bike for over a year now, and I can totally say your assessment is on point. It’s down on power versus the competition but has the tech and fit and finish typically only seen on top model bikes. It’s a premium middleweight naked at a price most can actually afford, that’s why I like it. I don’t like to feel like I’m riding on a plastic heap, same sentiment applies to cars. I love small cars but hate that most small cars feel like shit inside. I think what you’re sensing, Chase, is that the bike allows the rider to be a complete slack ass in their riding. You really don’t have to be in some specific gear or rev range to feel any pull from it since the torque comes on at a really low rpm. It makes for a chill commuter but also means you aren’t actively engaged in the bike trying to stay in that sweet spot. It IS very robotic in that sense. Additionally, I think if you had some twisties to take this bike on, it’d make more sense to you on what it’s purpose is. It isn’t nearly as flickable as an 890 Duke or Monster, but it tracks and holds a line extremely well and instills tons of confidence in the corners. Also, that low down torque really comes into its own in the twisties as you can practically have little throttle going into a corner, then just open her up on exit without the engine being lugged down too hard, it’ll pull you out without much fuss. It won’t set your hair on fire in straight lines and indeed, highway pulls are not its thing, but taking it into the mountains and keeping it in the mid range is 👌

      @@akuin811 ah, nice! Ya, I’d say if there’s anything that pops up more often than any other “wish” for my bike is if it had just a little bit more power, something around 120 would be perfect, so I imagine the Monster 1200 suits you very well! Not sure what you mean by “race mode” but I know “Dynamic Pro” and maybe Dynamic (?) was only offered as an option and had to spec up to get it, is that what you mean? The bike also has a lap timer onboard and I think that actually comes standard? But the Dynamic mode definitely makes the bike feel more alive and less “sedate” haha. The throttle is more reactive and it could be a placebo, but I feel the exhaust also crackles and pops more while on Dynamic (I have the Akra Carbon slip on). Dynamic Pro just means you can customize a setting to set the bike exactly as you wish. I set mine on “Dynamic” Throttle with everything else set on the standard “road” mode so I still get all the traction and aids but with a bit more life out of the throttle 👌

      @@chaseontwowheels Totally! Ya I think it can throw people off because it looks and feels like a top end bike, but without that top end power and rush. I think it fills a great niche that really hasn’t ever been addressed till recently. The Aprilia 660 line also comes to mind as well, as Premium spec bikes but middleweight size and power.

    Hi Chase, as the owner of a "Style Sport" variant of F900R for the past 4 months as well as coming from a 08 R6, The F900R catches alot more attention on the streets (with OEM engine spoiler and Evotech Tailtidy installed) as compared to my R6 which almost everyone has. I would call it the BMW Z4 of motorcycles. A gentleman's Roadster. No loud exhaust notes, No need to wring its neck to sky high Rpm for power, but still performs when you wants it to while keeping your rubber side down with all the tech. If I were to pick between a R6/R1 and a F900R, My heart would go for the R6/R1 while my head will pick the F900R. Would sacrifice top end performance for practicality. You nailed it; it doesn't scare you. I started riding 3 years ago at 47 years old, first bike was a Kawi Vulcan S. Great starter bike, but too slow after ~7,000 miles. Traded that for a 2021 MT 09 which I absolutely loved, but just taunted you to ride it in what could be considered an unsafe manner. Traded the Mt09 (put ~8,000 miles on it) for 2021 F900R and it's just smooth, all the tech I wanted (cruise control, heated grips, IMU). The build quality is top-notch and it rides soooo good. I do miss the rowdy nature of the MT09, but now don't feel like I may do something to kill myself every ride.

    12:42 the brake indicator is measuring deceleration in meters per second squared. On the app it will also read out acceleration and deceleration G-forces, and will show you anywhere on your route that the electronics intervened (ABS or DTC).

  • @PMitchell106
    @PMitchell106 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    3:36 that adjustable rear shock is stock, and is the lower option of the two factory suspension options available. The upgraded rear suspension is electronically adjustable for both damping and preload, BMW calls it Dynamic ESA.

  • @PMitchell106
    @PMitchell106 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    22:12, you need to turn off traction control and ABS in Dynamic mode for it to feel more direct, and even then the stock throttle mapping will mute things a bit. In Dynamic it still has wheelie control active, only Dynamic Pro mode allows the front wheel to come up, if configured to do so.

  • @PMitchell106
    @PMitchell106 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    5:13 it is lean angle, the IMU doesn't read it while you're not moving. Using the included BMW connected app, it will also record lean angle along your route so that you can see how far you leaned at each corner on a ride.

      I picked one up coming from a Ninja 650 as my first bike. I was looking for something like the Ninja, a good, all rounder since I commute on it, canyon carve, and mile munch via road trips. I looked into the Z900 and MT09, but while those bikes beat the F900R on power and outright hooliganism, I chose the Beemer for its touring potential with cruise control, heated seats, and quality saddlebags straight from the factory. Also comes with some upmarket equipment like Brembo brakes and steel braided lines and overall a nicer fit and finish. I feel for what you get, it’s a great value. I don’t expect everyone to love the F900R, no bike does that, but it suits my needs flawlessly. Enjoy the bike, bud!

    I testrode the F900XR model (the adventure/tourer twin of this F900R) and my feelings where EXACTLY the same as you describe here. It's a very good motorcycle, it has all the little things I would want on a bike (cc, dash, quickshifter, heated grips, good brakes, ..) but it didn't excite me at all. No butterflies in the stomach at whatever speed or gear or mode. I was looking for a comfortable, safe commuter that I could take my girlfriend on occasionaly. The F900XR would give me exactly that on paper, but as soon as I rode it, I didn't want it anymore. Then I rode some Ducati's and the rest is history.

    Compared to the Ducati Monster it just pulls at 130 which is insane. So the BMW is great for someone looking at a medium based speed and comfort. You ain’t going 160 on it. But 100-125 no issue. So it ain’t slow.

    I own this bike , I commute from the ‘burbs into central London plus fun in the summer etc and I love it. It’s fun enough to make your commute more enjoyable but also relaxed enough to not feel like an effort like a street triple RS or something , it might be a touch down on power but the quality and tech, plus dealer support , in my opinion ,makes it the better choice for me personally . Quick shifter not great at low speeds

    Coming from all Yamahas and an R6 just prior to having this, I love my BMW even more than the R6.
    Fully loaded, (I wouldn’t consider a base anything, ever.) just such a usable bike. I’ve gotten to a point where I don’t want to get racked every time I hit a pebble. Going 180 is fun, but also just going 75 with your arms crossed is so much better than wrist and back pain.
    I drive a luxury car, I wanted to finally match with a luxury bike. Just like the car I have, it’s muted and elegant, quiet and wafty, but it can do exactly what you ask in attack mode. It’s just a direct German feel versus a feral SS Japanese feel. Only EVER use the quickshifter above 8K RPM. That’s what it’s meant for, period.
    Also, being my first naked, I can finally ride without earplugs. The R6 windscreen was a nightmare without crouching. I have an expensive AGV and it’s whisper quiet up to about 90 on the BMW. I can actually USE MY SENA AGAIN. The newer bikes include connectivity, where the screen is the middleman for your phone and Sena. You can change music, get turn by turn directions, make phone calls. Even the $25k tourers use the same switchgear. It’s refreshing and calms my FOMO.
    I love my grunty little techy bike. It’s much harder to steal than an R6, has an OEM alarm that arms itself, and generally makes me feel better. The compliments and rubber-necking is also a small bonus. That badge on the side makes people wonder.
    Tldr: techy, safe, understated, flashy. My thing.
    Edit: I rode this bike from Denver to NYC and back, bought the OEM bags and it was amazing the entire way. Cruise was vital, or course. I also bought the PureBoxer jacket, which actually caught a lot of wind, strapping it to the back of the bike solved that issue. Great bike, great ride.

    OC: Not all bikes are made to be love affairs or drugs. Some bikes are made for a purpose and a utility, generally to get you from point A to point B on your day to day. I think this bike has more in common with say....the Honda NC750. Big bore parallel twins seem to be so linearly balanced that whatever eccentricities there are to other engine styles, they simply melt away under a wave of predictability.
    I wonder how well this bike actually sells in the States, where bikes aren't as popular for commuting. Europe, however, probably sells tons of these to folks who are just trying to commute to work.

It's for older guys. Like me. As you get older you want different things in a bike. I don't want a Harley or a hyper bike (what you like). I have a TL1000S that I still love, but the TL will hurt you if you dont respect that throttle as i found out when I first got on it. I wound up looking directly at the sky. As a young guy, I didn't need to go any faster then. Love the beast especially how it sounds with a Yoshi RS3. But i don't want to ride it like i stole it any more. I want something a little sporty and maneuverable with enough punch to get me out of trouble... (that might be an issue on the highway from what youre saying.) Don't know. I'm in the UK and it's 105bhp and 92nm of torque, in the US, I'm sure you only get 99bhp? I've also found out that the electronics only deliver the full whack in the last 20% of the throttle, so if you aren't using all the throttle it can feel muted. Once you know this, it supposedly transforms the bike and it comes alive.

    I think the feeling your missing and most people that ride more for the sport and less for utility is character. I feel that a lot of great all around daily usable bikes get bad review because they lack it, but gain a great following from those that use them long term. I think many standard configuration parallel twin and 4 cylinders fall into this category. The boxers, v twins and 270 degree parallel twins often have the character people seek. I'm still riding the FZ6 that I bought new in 2007 that got lackluster reviews and still love it. I've not found anything worth trading it in for and decided to keep it even after I save and get a new bike. Character will be a factor in my decision, but not the deciding one.

I did the Tail of the Dragon at Deal's Gap in Sept 2022 and it was just magic, but unless you've got Dynamic or Dynamic Pro enabled, it's boring!! I've ridden it twice in Road and both times at the first stop sign or red light, put it right back in Dynamic. OC comment - I think all the tech and refinement just gets in the way of the riding experience on a light or middleweight bike. You'd be damn happy you had all that safety stuff on a 170hp monster machine or a perfectly balanced engine in a massive touring bike, but with 100hp on the street you want to be able to use all of it without a ride-by-wire throttle or traction/wheelie control module telling you "no".
    The purpose of the technology is to act as a safety net, and none of us got into motorcycling because it's safe. The F900R is an objectively better motorcycle than an MT-07, but objectively better motorcycles have less character flaws to learn to love. They become better transport solutions and worse motorcycles as we think of them.

  • @JCrozier1

    OC. My takeaway is that you're saying this bike is boring like a Honda. It's a tool to do a job and it does exactly as expected.

    OC: From the video, as much as I could tell, the bike has short gears, power is distributed evenly (more or less) along the entire rpm range and is slowly released via ECU. That only could deprive you of power. In the highway section, you were complaining about not able to shift down as you were already at the top of the rpm. I think that explains why you weren't able to enjoy the bike. May be there's a setting you overlooked. Try that. Thanks for the video. PS: I'm not an expert on bikes, it's just my humble opinion.😊

    • @PMitchell106
      @PMitchell106 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A few small things to be aware of on the BMW from an owner's perspective:
      Quickshifter is not smooth on upshifts from first to second or second to third unless near redline at wide open throttle. All downshifts are smooth and satisfying, and upshifts to 4th, 5th, and 6th are always fine.
      The cornering headlight is nice, but the corner element is a bit less intense than I imagined, the headlight itself is excellent though.
      Ride modes pro is great to have, but keep in mind that "Dynamic Pro" is just a customizable configuration of "Dynamic", it is not a higher power mode and will not be more any more responsive than Dynamic.
      The rear ABS tends to intervene earlier than most people want, even in Dynamic mode. It can be turned off, but not independently of the front ABS.
      The engine runs best on 87 octane (US/AKI) as recommended by the owner's manual, a lot of people who insist on premium fuel have cold starting issues.
      Some 2020's had clutch issues, but for most of the 2021's, they've switched to the clutch used in the 850GS.

    • @7oyful
      @7oyful 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PMitchell106 Thank You for the info too. Its good to hear that its still the one for You out of the competition. Monster's quickshifter also doesnt work that well from first to second gear. I heard that its very similar in both those motorcycles. The headlight in Ducati is not what I was expecting also. It has lens instead of reflector so I was counting on more but its not impressive at all. I bet that f900r lighting is much better.
