As someone who's lived in tornado alley all her life. Make a go bag for March-July month time frame. With non-perishable snacks, water, diapers, wipes, extra oneies, flashlights, portable chargers, radio, blankets, dog food! So when the time comes you can grab it and go! Severe weather is so scary!! ❤
As someone who has also lived in tornado my entire life, I second this! The only thing I would add is make sure you have closed toed shoes! Safer for your feet if your house got hit.

That’s a good one my house was hit in December 2021 (I know weird time lol, and house just finally got finished this year 😅)luckily I had socks on but something caught my foot and ripped my socks! No injury! Thankfully! Even if it’s just a watch wear closed shoes just in case! ❤❤ oh and charge your phone too! Mine died and my friends were nervous I was no more 😅 oopsie

I think switching M's room sooner than later would be best. Just bc when baby comes, you want her to already be settled and loving her room! He's going to flip her world upside down regardless and having her room already her's and her not feeling like that's out of control too would be best!

Tornados are scary! I recommend putting together a tornado prep box every spring to keep in your basement. Flashlight, snacks, water, bike helmets, dog food, dog leash, shoes for everyone in the family, diapers, baby food, an extra car seat if you have one. Basically if your house is hit by a tornado, your heads are protected (helmets), you have a way to see if it’s nighttime (flashlight), your feet are protected from debris (shoes), and you have the essentials that you need. Your car may be damaged, so having a backup car seat is great. I would do those items as the basics but there are tornado prep videos on TH-cam that you can check out too.
As someone who lives in Nashville for over ten years, get a NOAA weather radio. It doesn't need any connectivity and a lot of newer models are battery powered. It will just go off and yell "TORNADO WARNING for the following counties... Etc. The warning has been lifted." It's really helpful, especially with how busy you are taking care of a little it would likely give you good peace of mind. ❤

Aww Jess! I love how honest you were about how scary the tornado warning was to you. I grew up with the warnings every summer so I was “used to” it but they terrified me every time. You mentioned not knowing what to do or what to grab and I know in that moment it’s all so rushed and scary. Here’s what we would always grab on our way down to the basement: our shoes, lamps/flashlights, water, our bike helmets, our weather radio, the dog haha and her leash, my mom would grab her phone charger and since you have Makaiah I’d recommend putting some of the essentials for her in a little bag that always stays near or in the basement so it’s always right there god forbid you need it. Blankets are perfect too. You did great for your first time dealing with it and while it’s always kind of scary, you’ll start feeling more confident that you have gotten your little family safe because you know and have what you need. 🩵

I live about two and a half hours from you- closer to Chattanooga. We had flood warnings and tornado warnings too. Luckily we didn’t get hit by the tornado at my house. We were in our basement. And luckily for us since we were down there we saw that our basement start flooding as it started leaking and we were able to move stuff that could get ruined quickly before it got bad. Thankful you guys were safe!
I’ve seen some really clever tornado preparedness bins that people put together, I bet you can look some up and DIY with a plastic bin in the basement so it’s ready to go all the time!

Hey Jess! So glad y’all didn’t get hit by the tornado. You might want to keep an emergency supply kit in the basement with water, non-perishable food/snacks, diapers, medical kit, etc. just in case. That way you’ll already be prepared during future tornado seasons, and it’ll give you peace of mind knowing you have everything you need already down there. Love y’all! ❤️
I’ll be 29 in September & was never afraid of storms until I was 12. My whole school was in the hallways taking cover and there were parents trying to pick up their kids from school so they knew they were safe but we were on lockdown and after the 1st tornado passed a lot us got checked out of school and 45 minutes later there was another tornado and it tore off our roof in the living room and ever since then that’s one of my biggest fears. I’ve been on anxiety and depression medication since I was 11 and now anytime there’s a tornado even just in my state (Arkansas) I have to take anxiety medicine because I have severe panic attacks along with asthma. And people with anxiety know the extent of hyperventilation that it causes, and because of that it triggers my asthma and has made me pass out 4 or 5 times throughout my life so I could literally feel your panic while watching this! But most of all I’m happy y’all are safe and sound! ❤
Our weather man always says to put your socks and shoes on in the basement too for tornado warnings in case the winds cause any glass to break and you need to walk outside afterwards

We get a lot of these in IL and I know Tennessee gets a few too. Just keep a like Hefty storage bin down there already packed. Extra outfit and PJs for the kids, diapers, wipes, snacks that can be stored for a while, waters, flash light, extra batteries, phone charger, blanket, maybe like crocs or something easy to put on and off for the kids. So if this ever happens you just grab the kids and Milo and go straight down and don’t have to stress about everything else.
We've been in the shelter at least twice a week in the past 7 months, it feels horrible and scary every time but it does get better eventually and you get used to everything in time. must've been scary to experience this as a mom, sending you a big hug and strength❤

I know it has been several weeks now, but praying for you in regards to the tornado. I experienced a tornado that devastated our city when my first child was 10 weeks old, and it definitely rattled me. My husband was at work, so we were alone too. We didn’t have a basement, so I had him strapped in his car seat in the bathtub, and covered us with pillows. It was extremely scary and has taken time for me to get over my fear of bad weather, especially when I’m home alone with my child. Miraculously, our house was one of the only ones in our neighborhood without damage.

I’ve been here my whole life and I always get scared during severe storms. The tornadoes in March 2020 were the most memorable for me. It took down the elementary and middle school I went to as well as many of my friends childhood homes. It was less than a mile from my mom’s house where I grew up, which is actually a manufactured home. Every time we have watches and warnings I worry about my loved ones and hope they can get to safe places in time.
Hey Jess so I live in the south (AR) and we get tornados too. The main thing to keep in mind is the trajectory of the tornado. There have been warnings that I slept through and the trajectory was not as much in our area. It's important to also be aware of the closet shelter that are in your area. I hope that helps!

If you live in an area where a natural disaster could happen or is common, DEFINITELY have a survival kit ready to go. You have a basement - perfect! Keep some of the necessities, like: water, dry food/snacks, dog food, blankets, whatever you might need for the babies, etc., in your basement AT ALL TIMES so that you're not scrambling in a panic state should there be a warning. Obviously switch things out so that you don't have expired stuff there :) But it is very important to be ready if, God forbid, disaster does strike..

Aww I feel so bad for your anxiety during the tornado warning!! Here in Houston Texas we’re used to crazy weather and natural disasters so much that my parents drove on the freeway during a literal tornado passing by them, there were sirens blasting and everything but nothing was shut down everyone was just driving like normal😅 I never really understood that other places weren’t like this!

Jess, please get a NOAA weather radio! You can find them online, walmart, target, many places. I live in SW TN and it saves lives. It's so loud, it WILL wake you up if needed so you dont have to stay awake. Another thing is learning a little ammature radar (I use radar omega like most). Nashville is usually in on the action so your "tornado product" would he the NOAA radio. ❤ stay safe, I know how hard it is. I'm always alone (my husband travels for work) whenever tornados come through and it's terrifying with my 4 year old. We just had one last Sunday (5/26) but it missed us, it was at 1:30 am.

Tornados never scared me like they do now that I’m a mom. I’ve lived in Nashville my whole life and don’t remember their being this many warnings as there was this year. I’m going to get an above ground tornado shelter! They sell a few different kinds. Also helmets are always great :)
