That's about how I've been living for years now. I purchased raw land several times to build a custom spec home on it. What I have done several times is to get a very used travel trailer to live in while I build. Then I sell the trailer for what I paid for it which is usually about a grand and move into the house with a temporary kitchen set up. I live in a small section of the house with all the dust and tools to save money and protect all the tools and building materials from vandals. Then I sell that home and do it all over again. I save a lot of money by living this way and have been able to save up a nice retirement in doing so. Now I'm almost done with the second to last home that I'll build and then build our small vacation cabin on one of the local islands. this little one bedroom home will be our year around home but I want to build a catamaran like what your planing on doing or just purchasing one that is already built and travel the seas while always having a place to come back to that will be located right on the water with a private dock. My wife and I are almost there but shes not that interested in boat life. I'll have to try and change that somehow or get divorced and find someone that is into that sort of lifestyle.

Life is all a balancing act, and this video addresses the reality of sailing, on and off the water - well done! Secondly, anyone who drinks Creemore Springs beer has got to be a person with good taste!

That winch sounded like the guy who had far too much extra hot chilli for dinner ;)
Seriously though, it's only when a good understanding of a persons life without the little luxuries such as a sewerage system making their lives so much more comfortable, that people get to understand how committed to wanting to be on the water and "free", that you guys (and many others too) really are.
Keep up the great work guys :)

You took on a hard project and you have done a great job whether it has taken longer than you think or not. Now you will know more about your boat than most know about their lives and you will be able to explore the seas as you want. Patients is a virtue, I would say you have both been at the extreme end of that, I hope you get to sail soon, or at least splash in the water!

You guys are so inspiring! I've been working on my boat (in my back yard for two summers) Can imagine living and working in the same space like you have for 21 months. You really going to have something special when you done and something to be proud of. From what I can see, you doing a really great job too! It's not often that you find a girl who works so hard you have been truly blessed with a great mate! You make a really great couple and I enjoy and look forward to each and every video. Please keep up the good work, can't wait to see you on the water and on your first sail! God Bless and Good Luck! Bill S. s/v ODIN

Before that though, this building project is a dream of mine as well, and I will be enjoying every step as you continue building your boat. I hope you will keep us up to date with maintenance problem/solutions you guys are finding as you continue, those little secrets about replacing ball bearings and electronics and patching holes and starting 10 year old engines are invaluable to a dreamer!

best line so far. sunlight reflecting off the dirt. excellent.
i like this because the momentum is building nicely and you are driven do it yourselfers and locals which is very nice.
we will be driving up to Caledonia for Thanksgiving next week from Kalamazoo so it is nice to see a very nice local couple devoted to
task and each other. I havent looked ahead in your videos but after two years hard work you are going to have extra appreciation for
anything life on the sea brings. Though i feel you will look back one day, at your time of hard work on land and feel it was the
best years of your life. hopefully you are in a nice exotic place now that requires no sanding or painting!

Anyone who has camped a lot, or lived rough for any length of time can say how the experience of washing dishes outside gets easier the more you do it, and you learn to be very efficient with water and technique..things become "how is the fastest way I can do this passably?" But it's not a bad thing, although I'm sure you were glad to hit the water again ;) It is good you documented the not-so-nice parts too, as it makes a much more realistic viewing experience for us, and keep the vids coming please.

    Hi guys,
I just want to lift doubts and depression.......you are creating videos, creating a following and getting the boat done (the way you want) (at the least expense) and making memories that will never fade.
Stay in love, be gentle to each other and pursue those dreams. (When are you going to name her?)(are you looking for suggestions) and believe me when I say, if every marriage were this tough, it would be iron clad and be as strong as handcuffs.
We all want to see you successful, on your terms. You can do this and sail away. We are in this with you!
    Much love and respect, George

Re bathing..in the 70's I lived aboard a 36' mahogany sloop. During the warm months I used one of those hand held pressure spray containers that's used to spray trees with. So I'd bathe in my swimsuit on the dock or wherever seemed appropriate at the time, then sponge bathed with hot water from the stove in a large bowl or plastic container. Hard to wash your hair but... you do have help :)

We only did weekends when our boat was on the hard, I am surprised your fresh water tanks and system are not much higher on the to do list, right at the top just to be able to wash your hands is nice. Don't envy you the painting, it seems to take forever, been there...

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Truth be told, we don't trust the water here and would prefer not to have it in our tanks. We're going to wait on our first fill until we're at one of the marinas closer to the coast. And yes, the painting and sanding are really taking their toll on me. :)

On nights when you can't wash dishes, use disposable plates, and cutlery when possible. the pots and pans can be done in the clubhouse sink. I'm surprised they allow dumping grey water into the bushes. Usually grey water goes into the city drains or a dedicated sink in the washrooms. Black water, well that's obvious.

I'm still not sure why I would want to own an Aluminum Boat over a Fiberglass Boat? There seem to be too many drawbacks vs. the assets especially when it comes to painting. One thing I do like is that Aluminum bends first instead of cracking. Why not choose steel over Aluminum? Weight? Can you put fiberglass or Gel Coat over Aluminum? Questionns, Questions!

Well done. I stumbled onto your TH-cam page. After watching a few episodes I found out your from Grand Rapids (which is where I live.). Then I watched your episode in GR and when you went to eat at yesterdog, my mom was in your video ordering at the counter. Now I see you've been to Utila where my wife and I own a small lot of land. What a small world. I really enjoy watching the adventure you two are on. Can't wait to see that boat in the water. Best of luck.

Wow, what a crazy coincidence! It is strange to find out how small this world is sometimes. :)

Used to love the prime time show Quency ME (medical examiner) back in the 1980's. Anyone remember how he lived on a boat on the hard like forever? I did a some months of "time" on the hard across the lake at Glades Boatyard. Totally sucks but, is still kind of neat and now that we have a composter head it's just a bit easier. Glad we never had any year anniversaries though!

Wow. I have to give you a ton of credit. My wife would not put up with living like that in a reno zone for weeks, let alone months like you. You are awesome. Craig

Refits always take three times as long as estimated/hoped for and are about 3 times more costly as well.
The good thing is you both know every inch, nut, bolt, screw dowel and that thing there when it inevitably breaks, stops, binds, catches, plugs, leaks or mocks you in a seaway at the least opportune moment.
I don't even want to know about how you ended up in Indiantown. Stuart (not a great place) must seem positively urban in comparison. You could have ended up in Rio though :) FL not Brasil.

How long until you splash her? What are your plans after the boat is done? I just looked on google maps, do you take that canal to the ocean or truck the boat? Enjoying your videos, I am renovating a Cape Dory 33 for long distance sailing. Two years and gone.

We plan to splash her in May, then in June head to the Bahamas for about two months before running stateside again to wait out hurricane season. Lengthier future plans are discussed in our new Q&A video (link above). There is the Okeechobee Waterway that runs from the Gulf to the Atlantic, and we'll take that the 25 miles back out to the ICW. :)

Maybe write a cookbook ;) Sometimes on the vlogs I follow I hear complaints about how it gets so hot in the salon with the stove going.

The heat inland fl is excruciating do you have a small ac? I wonder about my ability to cruise ever, because I hate the heat down hear in Florida and couldn't imagine always being hot.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 7 ปีที่แล้ว

It almost forced me to give-up cruising when we hit the Bahamas/Caribbean the first time. Our friends Jackie and Ron made it to Florida and shipped the boat back to Michigan due to the heat. It's much better when on the water, but it still gets toasty.
