- Rain or shine won’t keep these mail jumpers from their appointed rounds. Each year a bunch of high school seniors try out as mail jumpers on Wisconsin's Lake Geneva and it may be the best summer job ever. The challenge is to dash to the mailbox and race back to the boat before it pulls away. The boat slows down but never stops so you have to be quick. In order to get a job, tryouts are required and each employee must wear a life vest. #InsideEdition

Believe it or not, I'm Lexi from the video. I've actually continued working at the cruise line for many years. I became a bartender and a crew person since mail jumping was not my calling. I am currently pursuing a masters degree in Speech Language Pathology and am happy to report that I'm not in a full body cast lol.

I need to add I’m not surprised by this. I work as a rural carrier for USPS and during orientation/academy they stressed safety first. Once I started working safety quickly took a back seat to speed.

They hire teenagers. The turnover rate is probably high lol.
Its not a permanent job. They're all interns 😁. If no applications come in (which has never happened recently) the mailboat stops at each pier. So to make the route faster and more fun for teens they dont stop the boat, just slow it down. Also, this is somewhat of a dramatic enactment 😅

Yup. Worked on this lakefront a summer camp, boss had the mail boat come to our dock. I was in charge of the waterfront and eventually every day I had everyone get out of the water and off the dock for when the mail boat came. It was the only way I could be sure it didn’t kill someone. No amount of complaints would change my bosses mind about paying for the mail boat because they convinced him it was good marketing.
If only there were a central location where everyone could bring their mail to send out and when the new mail came in they could pick it up....maybe some day.

a) require all mail boxes to be at the end of the dock
b) design a box that can be swapped out mechanically. IE current box with mail to be picked up is picked up, new box with mail for delivery is dropped off. Or just use bags on hooks!!
c) from a,b you just need to load the mechanism on the boat before the next dock and all is good
Basically, how they did it with pickup and delivery from trains. I understand boats can be a bit of a pain to stop and get going, but this running halfway down a dock is nonsense.
