- The brake booster vacuum pump leaking engine oil is common on FSI engines. Replacing an FSI vacuum pump, or the pump seal is a very easy DIY with just a couple of tools needed. I just got an estimate from a VW dealership yesterday to replace mine while I was getting a bent wheel replaced and an alignment and they wanted $500 lol. I'll definitely be doing this job myself. Seems fairly simple to do.

Hi HumbleMechanic :) and all the friendly peeps out there. Looking for some urgent assistance. We have a BMW 318i F30 2016 - B38 engine. We replaced the oil cooler, oil filter housing and pressure converter electric valve. Vehicle is now running nicely with no more leaks or overheating. Problem is that the brake pedal is now very hard? Please advise? Thanks so much.
This video stands out from so many others on this repair, simply because of the angle that you're able to show the pump removal/replacement procedure with.. specifically the hardest to reach bolt that requires that really dumb bracket (Why, Audi? Why?) to line up when putting the replacement back on! Didn't catch this on the first go, after watching your video, I saw the bracket and went OMG AHA! Ran right out to the garage and bam! After some lining up work, the screw finally threaded in.. thank you for being straightforward but showing all the critical areas!

Thanks, It's just the perfect tutorial that I need. I just got an oil change from the dealer and they said that I need a new vacuum pump because it's leaking oil and they gave me a $720.00 estimate for it.

@@dexterflorey3676 save yourself some money, I bought the seal from eBay it’s not for much and it’s easy to install just be careful the tubes they might be brittle.

I did this same repair on my '08 Passat. Also replaced the HPFP bolts with studs so I could periodically check the cam follower...except the local dealer took my studs and put bolts back in (I forget now why shop had it apart). Wasn't to happy about that. Keep the videos coming! BTW, I just passed 260k miles!

Yep my vacume pump on my octavia vrs leaked. And it was the outer cover. Covered my flipping spotless engine bay with oil

Wished I’d have listened to this video 2 weeks earlier 😂 absolutely love the content on the 2.0 Tfsi engines. I’ve got some very skeptics repairs after looking further into it... I broke the pipe on 1.18 seconds in😂 got to get one tomorrow. Decided to go for an aluminium one with extra long pipe for the small pipe to sit👍🏼
Thanks to your video I was able to get the courage to do this repair and completed it. As you pointed out, the extra black fitting one needs to be careful of not losing. The third screw attaching the vacuum pump to the engine at 4 o'clock is blind to access and must be very careful not to drop it, or the Torx drive one may be using on it. Those screws use a T27 wrench. I was able to save 700.00 from the dealer quoted repair, who said the part could not be rebuilt.

I did the math based on your help compared to dealership estimates for repairs such as hpfp replacement,follower, vacuum pump etc. and You have saved me close to $1000.00 in costs. hi ive replaced the oring due to leak but still leaking, can i get away with using sealant, it seems to be leaking from bottom end of case
this might be right on time. just had a clutch replacement since the rms was leaking. looks like that wasn't the only thing leaking. Nice DIY

I work on BMW `s , and they use the exact same pump on some of their older models[ the E90`s] for the most time, the seal that will fail, is the seal under the large cover [ the one you didnt take off]
And for some time , BMW didnt stock seals for this pump, you had to buy a brand spanking new pump !!
So what we did in the shop, was buying the oil filter for that car , and using the seal that came with the filter, and used that - as the seal for the pump !
On he E90 models , the pump sits at the rear of the engine , leaking oil on the exhaust !
That is AWESOME!!!

I'm having trouble with an oil leak on a audi A6 just under the vacuum pump or high pressure fuel pump. It's also leaking on the alternator as well not sure what's causing this problem but I'd like to fix it before I trade it in as New Zealand is very hard to get the parts for it.
Simple Green reacts over time with most aluminium alloys. Try soda blasting or good old dishwashing liquid.
Same process on a 2010 Passat 2.0t? Not sure which pump I need and if the hpfp needs to be removed. Thanks
Hey how’s it going I love your videos first off second I’m having a problem with my 2006 Audi A4 Quatro 2.0 FSI engine I recently had it into the shop to have the rear brakes done and now the brake pedal is fading to the floor they told me it was the master cylinder so we were pleased the master cylinder and we still have the same problem

Do you have to bleed the vaccum lines after you are done and if so how do you do that?
I just did this thanks a bunch. I just realised though as I reinserted the pump into the cam shaft I did not check which was driven/drive end. I started car and tested brakes seems OK. I heard a clink as I screwed the pump back in. Would this be the drive inserting into the cam? What could the consequences of getting the drive the wrong way around be?
Have you ever seen a VAG vacuum pump leak oil into the intake? On my 2011 Cayenne VR6, it was burning a quart in half an hour, and I found the path to be from the vacuum pump (after replacing the PCV diaphragm, and then bypassing the PCV/CCV, and finally arriving at plugging the vacuum pump). I'm not sure if it's a failed check valve, or there's something more complicated. Thanks!! At least this comment might help other frustrated VR6 owners thinking they need a rebuild.
What would cause hard brake pedal after rebuild? I have vacuum at pump outlet AND at booster end of hose by valve. No other leaks or noises.

Hey Charles. Great video. I’ve replaced mine, but can’t figure the two brackets that fit together that has the last special bolt.
My one is a Audi A6 2011 sedan this is my part 06E 103 535 A but it says it's a high pressure fuel pump not sure if it's a vacuum pump or not. New Zealand is hard to get the parts needed to fix oil leak problems. Oil leaks on the engine coolant inlet flange hose and drips off onto the ground. And there's a small leak just below the valve cover gasket on the cylinder head. Any ideas on what this issue would be? I am definetly leaking oil on the drivers side even oil leaking on alternator.
Hi Charles I notice that when I do the vacuum pump on the 5 cylinder engine I also remove the cover and the plastic fittings and I reseal the cover and the fitting with sealant .

I replaced the seals on the vacuum pump 6 months ago, I tried removing my vacuum pump tonight to get my cam chain cover off, but the vacuum pump didnt want to wiggle off -_- any suggestions or reason it didn’t come off? I put the car in tdc before taking off the 3 t screws lol idk if that locked the vacuum pump in there good

I had grime all over mine in my 2019 Alltrack. Can this housing leak cause misfires? I have brand new spark plugs, brand new coil packs, and I checked for a vacuum leak all over. I'm getting misfires in cylinder 3 mostly on cold starts but around 5 or so in all cylinders after it warms up. This vac pump is definitely leaking, so I was wondering if this could be causing my misfires. Thanks.
Have you ever replaced the o-ring under the nipple on the pump that goes to the booster? Have one that the nipple pulsates up and down making a knocking noise when it is cold.

@HumbleMechanic Great video, I have a Mk7 gti but the gasket is a metal gasket. Have you replaced a vacuum pump gasket on a mk7 gti before?? If so do you have any tips?? I replaced the gasket on mine because it was leaking but now it still keeps leaking, do you think I may need to resurface the vacuum pump??
has it got any return valve to stop engine oil from coming off to the brake booster in case the one in booster failed ,I have one here gave me aheadache to find out how come the oil in booster , the brake booster literally filled with oil , I would assume this happening during engine shutdown as that vacuum on booster will suck any oil in pump if it has not got valve at the outlet where vacuum hose connected to it , can you elaborate in this please

Recently i found out that my brake booster hose was cracked and i bought a new one. I replaced it, but the new one has a breather valve and my old one didn't have it. In VW they say this is an upgrade and there is no more replacments like mine, and that i should just close the breather valve with a rubber cap.
Is this for real? What is your advice?

Hi Humble Mechanic, great tutorial video. My wife's 2006 TT is leaking slightly at the bottom of this pump. Is there an O ring also behind the front cover plate of this? If so should I just replace this first or is it more likely the O ring that you replaced? Thanks
vaccum pump in oil in bmw isnt that what i think. its not broken pump. but one direction valve. it takes oil vapours and pul it in break underpressue lines. valve to repleace whole lines to clean and breaks servo

They make seal kits. You can try that before replacing.

Thanks for the video! I took apart the entire pump to replace all three O-rings/gaskets on the pump and found that there was a substantial amount of oil inside the pump. After cleaning the outer portion of the pump, I re-oiled the internal chamber of the pump and added Permatex Engine assembly lube to all the moving parts and gaskets. Is oil inside the vacuum pump normal? Also, I stripped the threads in the hole on the engine block side of the bolt at 430oclock position. So I screwed that bolt in with blue loctight, but it certainly didnt feel tight like the other two bolts as I was tightening it. Should I be concerned about this? Thank you!

Hi, related question. '07 jetta 1.6 bse, stiff brake pedal in the mornings, works ok when engine runs. Checked booster as recommended, seems ok. Changed vacuum valve+hose+ring where it enters into the booster. No better nor worse. Brakes ok. If i repeatedly press pedal hard and fast, a fiss can be heard. What should i do? Changing booster ? What is that thick coolant hose underneath the pump? I need a new one and can't find the part. It goes to a plack plastic piece.

Hi there. I tried replacing my brake booster hose which had split in 2 places (2008 GTI FSI), but it broke off the nipple in the coolant flange, and it looks like a bear to try to replace. How hard would that be as a DIY for the flange? Thanks!
I changed that part because it was leaking and still have to stand on the brakes to get it to stop. AND it sounds like I’ve fouled out some plugs.
On the 2.5 engine with the 09g transmission you have to disassemble the pump to this job. Or you will have to take the transmission out of the car..

I used this video to learn how to fix my 2015 for Fusion that suddenly developed a hard brake.
I ordered the part from partsgeek.com and waited a week for it to come.
20 minutes off with the old part, and 20 minutes back on with the new part.
Part Number for my 2015 Ford Fusion was : 119724-07964442

total was under $100.00 plus my time
I watched the TH-cam above about replacing a similar part on an Audi/VW and it was almost exact, except the o-ring is not an o-ring in the Fusion part, and therefore you have to replace the part, not just the o-ring. The fusion version is a large o-ring with a smaller one attached

Just wondering! Why not get rid of the pump, block that passage, and install and an electric vacuum pump?
Seems like a ton of work and cost to install something that is just as likely if not more to fail.
hello humble mechanic Love your shows anyhow I don't know any other way to get a hold of you as I'm not very tech savvy My 2014 TDI is having frequent DPF regens and the dealer tried to charge me $3,000 and said it was the thermostats and the air water you know radiator and saying that it wasn't getting up to 87° c well I proved them wrong it was getting up to 87 Celsius and it had a successful region several times they tried to charge me $3,000 so I stated that already and I thought it was complete crap they did not even take it on a road trip as I see the mileage so when I picked it back up I took it out on about a 50 mi ride and it successfully regent not to keep on going on I'm just wondering why is it that it's getting such frequent regions any help would be greatly appreciated also they tried to tell me that it was not under warranty now I am back to having failing regions quite often but sometimes you know regening and dropping back down to like 23% please help me also I only have about 58,000 mi on the vehicle and treat it like a baby I changed the oil way too often probably at about 2500 mi should go says it goes for 10,000 and I use the mobile one that is for the emission system synthetic and it's approved thanks sorry for any mistakes in my writing and keep up the good work

This looks like a mk5 gti vac. pump. I have a mk5 rabbit with the 2.5l. I have already used the delete kit from APR. It too seems like leaking seals are the only issue I could detect wrong. Do you think the seals could be replaced on that pump as well or do you only recommend a replacement pump for the 2.5l. like in one of your previous videos?

What do you do with the old pump for a home mechanic? Do you chuck it in trash?
Or bring it to a shop and ask them to recycle it. You can hold it for scrap but that is kinda pointless
