    Imho I think it should have been maximum yield torque before permanent deformation. So from 1st to last.
    1st 120
    2nd 240
    3rd 180
    4th 620
    5th 240
    Last 300

      Right; also (certainly on the first one) even the deformed max of 300 measured was when the press head was further up the handle, so the distance changed quite a bit... was only like 240 before then.

    You should measure force before the tool bends, not maximum force during the press. The wrench is obviously destroyed waaaaayyyyy before the maximum force point. The first wrench looks like it fails around 85 kg, while the expensive wrench gets to about 200 kg before it's wrecked. The force gets a lot higher after the wrenches are trashed.

  • @GeorgeJFW
    @GeorgeJFW 5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    There is definitely diminishing returns as tools get more expensive, you're paying for the finish not so much all in strength. Great video!

    • @LazerLord10
      @LazerLord10 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      But finish can be the difference between a tool that enjoyable to use and one that isn't. If you're using it every day, getting the good stuff initially is probably a good bet. After all, you only buy one wrench assuming you don't lose it. (maybe the more expensive one will have an intensive to keep track of it!).

    • @damasek219
      @damasek219 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can't evaluate it by what it can resist divided by money. There is only certain limit a steel can endure and getting closer to that limit demands more and more quality as you are coming closer. Just like the best sportscars. You don't compare them by how fast they can go divided by how much they cost. When you're approaching better and better results, every extra kph or every extra bhp demands a lot more cost and quality because that extra little speed can be the final difference between first and second place or between success and failure. So the value goes up exponentially with quality. You could make a wrench from crap and sell it for 10 pence. It would still hold 100 kg, which makes it's performance/money ratio many times better than all the stuff we have seen in the video, but when you need to fix really tough stuff you will need something better and the tougher it gets the tougher tools you will need, so that extra 100 or 200 kg resistance can be the difference between your success or failure. Good wrench will not only resist some more pressure but it will also keep it's shape for the rest of your live while the cheap one will bend and wear out just like we saw in the video.

    As a heavy duty mechanic, the only reason you buy more expensive wrenches are because they take longer to wear out the 12 point box section, and the strength of the open end. That and they feel nice.
    The box section is always strong enough and it's very very rare to bend them in the middle, even on $5 wrenches. Test the open end and you should find a bigger difference.

    • @ionstorm66
      @ionstorm66 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the cheaper wrenches tend to be looser fit on the box and open end too. Loose fit means more rounded bolts and nuts.

    The Biltema ”premium” is basically a rough copy of the old Bacho PU, which are the best spanners I have ever worked with. Bacho PU can still be bought for peanuts in fleamarkets around Scandinavia. Second hand PU:s beat chinese spanners any day and are probably the most cost effective way to get proper tools I can think of. I do own a set of the Biltema ripoffs though. Some of them bent more evenly across the length of the tool, so even though the maximum load might not be much higher, they'll undergo elastic deformation (spring back after bending) at loads where as the ones just bend just at one spot undergo plastic deformation (permanently bent).

    I'm not sure but the 340kg from the first wrench look a little bit strange.
    It was ~260kg all the time, until the wrench startet to bend more and the pressing cylinder was turning - when it stopped turing, there were 260kg again.
    Maybe something went wrong when the pressing cylinder rotated?

    • @klontjespap

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems to be measuring downward force vs rotational torque force. Wouldn't rotational torque be what matters most? Measuring downward force may skew results based on lever length.

    Crazy to realize that the whole time the wrench is moving, it's not because it's turning a bolt, but because the wrench is being bent.

  • @walkercobb2808
    @walkercobb2808 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that it's likely that these are all made of relatively inexpensive low alloy steels, and likely have the same heat-treatment- austenitize and air-cool. I'd bet the biggest factor in the difference in strength is the geometry of the wrench, particularly the cross-section of the handle. The strongest wrench was different from the others in that its handle was much wider, and was thicker towards the outside like an I-beam- requiring much higher stress to achieve the same strain as the others.

    I dont usually have any problems with the closed end of a wrench, or a good fastener.
    You should repeat this test but round the corners of the bolt slightly, and use 6 sided wrenches (vs 12 point)
    And also test the open end.
    Those are the two modes I find most annoying with cheap wrenches, and why I swapped to nicer ones.

  • @marks6663

    Sometimes when you pay more for a wrench, you get a more precise fit on the box and open ends. Basically you’re less likely to round off a fastener, and if your getting a better bite you transfer more torque to the faster
