Very cool what you did. That's more wiring than I've seen most people do. I had an st1300. It was a good bike. The only thing for me and my wife on a road trip was the lack of storage. Thanks for posting.
Rodney Barcus thank you. We had that issue for 2up touring in the beginning too. We added a 56 liter Givi top case and we have been fine since. We go moto camping all the time and once you learn to pack right for the ride, the storage room is sufficient. Thanks for watching.

Great idea on the fuel bottles! I have the same plastic container in my garage, didn't even know the fuel bottle fit in it. Go figure. I might do the tour pack power tip to charge my helmet. I tour on a ZX14 and by far the best mod I made was mounting the LSL/Speigler tubular handlebar conversion kit. I had tried just risers for the stock clip-ons and they were ok, but it just doesn't touch the conversion kit in terms of comfort and utility. See, "Pops" here just can't fold up on a sporting bike the way he used to, especially for 500+ mile days. This mod mounts 2" bend superbike handlebars up another inch-and-a-half and moves them toward the rider about 2". This results in the rider sitting up straighter and taking a lot of weight off the wrists and un-cricking the neck from having to look up all the time. Law of unexpected consequences: I can see around me much better now because I'm sitting up straight and my neck is not at an uncomfortable angle, resulting in far less tunnel vision. One downside is that it causes a subtle shift in weight towards the rear of the bike because of rider position. This made the front end feel somewhat vague when cornering until I lowered the front ride height about a half inch.
All in all, the best money I've spent on this bike.
Sounds similar to the helibars. I added risers on my cbr 600 and I agree, it makes a huge difference. But it didn’t bring the bars closer just higher. Sounds like a great mod. People are so afraid to mess with the ergonomic of the bike but fail to realize that the bike is not custom built for their comfort. You have to make mods. Ride safe brother.

Excellent video! Let's see? On the fjr, we had very similar mods. On the ultra, we haven't added much for comfort other than highway pegs. I do have a drivers backrest but haven't installed it yet. We also have a beverage holder but need to come up with a tube long enough to reach Mrs Den.

I also have a drivers backrest which I never installed. I have a cup & a bottle holder which I only use on short day rides. For the long rides, I have a Platypus 3 Liter Water bladder in the tankbag. The hose is plenty long for the Mrs. I'm sure you can buy a longer hose to fit.
Motorcycle den you have a drivers backrest? What seat did you have on the fjr? I didn't know they made a seat with a for fjr with a drivers backrest just one for the passenger

ST1300 with cruise control is a great bike. I had oportunity to drive one. Only what lacks with ST1300 is a stability of ST1100. ST1100 is the most stabile motorcycle at high speed in compare to others Touring models.
I know some have had issues with stability at high speeds. I personally have not experienced anything in triple digits. To me, with a few modifications, it is the perfect touring machine.

Not too many people travel with their "better half" I do, always and it's really great, I like to see it too, it brings couples closer. We are at the other end of the cc scale, with a Vespa GTS in Europe and a 350 Royal Enfield Meteor in Asia, both great bikes, but we travel much lighter. Not sure I would like to do those long highways in the States, preferring the mountain twisties of Portugal and Thailand. Enjoy your riding.

Hey a bike is a bike, but yeah, I don't think it would be ideal (but doable) for the long streches of highways we have here.
We just completed a tour of the entire North Ease, from Florida up to Maine. 16 days. It was awesome.
Lots of highway riding, but also some mountain twisties in VT, PA, and upstate NY.
We hope to make out to Porugal & Thailand one day.

When I'm doing long trips...especially multi-day tours, I use Crampbusters on both grips. It's great to be able to relax both hands and arms while cruising down the road. I have Cruise Control on my bike, but it's difficult to use it except for the occasions when I'm out on the open road and without much traffic. The Crampbusters are amazing!
I agree. I am actually planning on picking up another one for the left grip.
Always wanted cruise control, but it's a tough install so I just use the throttlemeister throttle lock. It works great.
Several Go Pro cameras charging all the time, controlled by a handlebar mount. I like it!

That looks like a DCT transmission bike which is also a great add on for longer trips . I have a 6 speed FJR but I think I may add a Goldwing to my garage and it will b DCT .
Hi, the ST is a 5 speed, I do wish it had the extra. gear. I have been eyeing the Goldwing as well. It looks SOOO comfortable.

I ride a 2002 ST1100ABSII, my top comfort farkles was electronic cruise control. I have heated grips, I run power to my tank bag and tail case. Helibars, Corbin saddle. Wind deflectors, both on the mirrors and fairings. Just added a Givi Airflow adjustable windshield. Enjoy, cheers

I have an FJR 1300 ..and have done most of these upgrades..except the fuel cans .. I will think about it .
I might also add for those suffering the seat problems..try a Purple Seat pad or aIR HAWK.. i IN FACT HAVE USED BOTH AT THE SAME TIME ..OR WILL MIX AND MATCH DURING A LONG RIDE :) a Laminar Lip if your screen isnt high enough ,,and drop pegs if pegs not low enough :)

That's called a dash shelf. There was a company that made them year's ago but they are no longer selling them.

Handle bar muffs with heated gips, perfect match. Only problem on the ST1300 is it covers a small part of the mirrors.
Since I have Heli bar risers, my mirrors are already partially covered so that wouldn't work for me. But I can see how that would be a great match. I am actually looking into bark busters, just to keep the wind, rain, and flying debris off of my hands.

I use a combination of google maps, and honda trip planner. Then after planning, I export it to my Garmin Zumo 665.

Great videos! It occurs to me your type of riding and add-ons you installed might lead you to a Goldwing? Several of your items are included on a tour model and the others are available for additions.
IMHO, I would suggest a 2021 or 2022 GW tour with a DCT transmission. The DCT will rock your world as it has mine. The DCT is a 7 speed with gears 5, 6 and seven all being overdrives! In addition, it also has a reverse and forward 'walk mode' that runs off the starter/alternator and not part of the transmission! Don't forget, you can let it shift or manually shift with finger controlled 'paddle' levers! Four electronic ride modes along with electronic load control, wow!
Many of the other pluses you talked about are on the GW with a few critical updates made in 2021 and carried into 2022. These years are identical except color choices. Fuel was decreased by a gallon and many folks have been bashing this change BUT...they have not 'done their homework.' The new GW gets better mileage then the previous generation. I have owned both of these last generations (and an original 1975). Recent past generation touring mileage, 42 MPG. My 2021 DCT touring mileage, 45-55 ! Yes, 55. The 55 was not at 75 MPH on an interstate but you get the idea. My average overall is in the high 40's, 47 or 48. Good Rides
Thanks for the great info. I have seriously considered the Goldwing as our next bike. I admit, I did consider the gallon less in the tank as a drawback, but I guess the better mpg makes up for it. But, it would be nice to have both. Better mpg and the extra 50 mile range.
In the end I guess the total tank range is what's important.
@@MRMRS2wheeler I rode 50,000+ miles on my 2008 GW ABS with 42 MPG every time while touring. Touring is 97% of my riding. My 2021 has given me a range between -30 to +40 per tank, depending on where I was riding and the speed. My older GW never went above the 42 even when I was riding in extended slower conditions, as in all day in a national park...my new GW will show much higher MPG when riding in those same slow cases. @@MRMRS2wheeler My trips are varied but my average is 260-275 maximum. I don't want to push the limit too often so my stops are 225-250. My rear end is always ready for a break by then and most of the time before then. Good Rides

Hi Mike! My bike might be alittle overkill, But I added an auxiliary 12 port fusebox from the main battery controlled by a relay....so when I kill the switch everything goes off! Also I ran a snake of 6 sepperate fused wires to the front of the bike run my accessories!
A clearview taller winscreen with a vent!
A inflatable Butt cushion!
I also converted all the light bulbs and reflectors to led to save power! With an led underbody kit.
I also went with the Kuryakian iso is grips...with crampbusters.
And last but not least a Breakway cruse control....
Geezz...im out cintrol!..haha
Great mods. Not overkill at all. If we're going to spend a lot of time in the saddle, we need to make these modifications for our comfort and safety (that's what I tell the Mrs, lol).

I`m having trouble figuring out a lot of your mounting hardware. (3:02) On your faring you have a triple ball setup. Where can I find that plastic/metal piece where the three ball mount to?
The mount you see there is called a dash shelf. The company no longer makes them.

Hi, I use these:
Gerbing Heated liner ,Gerbing heated pants,
and Gerbing T5 Hybrid gloves. I found they work really well.
I used them on my trip to Wyoming last May, in 30°f temps, rain, mixed snow and hair. and while I did have an issue getting the gloves to work, it turned out I just wired them wrong.

No tire pressure monitoring system? I had two tire incidents in two weekends. I found it really hard to tell my tire was flat and rode on it for too long. I tore up the side wall of a still good tire. 😅 Woopsies. Lol. I've had a rear flat before, but I just couldn't tell on this fjr1300.
@Agustin I do have a TPMS system on the bike. Not sure if I had it when I made the video or if I just forgot to include it.
It has saved my butt more than once.

Finally got my ST1300 and working on some modifications now! I’m extremely excited and so far I’m loving the bike. One thing I’m interested in doing is adding the Ram ball mounts seen in your video here. Do you have any details on how you made these mounts work or your install process?
Congrats on the ST. The mods is the fun part. Which ram ball mounts are you referring to? I have 8 total on the bike.

The one you're referring to is called a dash shelf.
Those are kind of hard to find. There was a guy making them custom for the St 1300 and 1100. It was on the St owners forum. If you haven't yet, I recommend joining the forum. Lots of great info and tutorials on there.

Hey Doug,
I wired them to the fuzeblok to one of the switched plugs, so that it turns off when I turn off ignition.
You must make sure you have a high enough amperage fuse, but it's a great failsafe to prevent draining your battery if you forget to turn it off (which I have done repeatedly when I had it wired directly to the battery).

I haven't had any issues with electric, and I have a LOT of modifications on the bike. The only time I have a large electrical draw is when we are both running out heated suits.

I already have the Oxford heated grips, the grip puppies and a throttle rest and the Heli bars riser... But the highway pegs? Does that really work? How tall are you? Im sure my legs would be too squashed
I'm 5'8, but know of guys over 6 ft that use them. They work great. Problem is they are hard to find. The company that made mine closed after the owner passed away. There is one company (as far as i know) that makes them for the ST bikes that's PSR. Haven't tried them so can't really comment.

The highway pegs I have were from a company called MCL, but they are not producing them anymore.
There is an upgraded version to them, which I would like to replace mine with by a company called PSR.

Only downside to them is that you have to cut your own crash bar cover, where as MCL included new ones in the kit.
They do provide a template, but I am a chicken when it comes to that stuff 😉

You maybe able to build a set pretty easy. 3 strips of metal bar. lay one on top and one underneath the crash bar and bolt together. At the front end insert a spacer between the bars and place the third bar laid on top drill a hole and bolt through the bar laid on top down through the spacer and through the lower bar and bolt together. if you want the top bar to sit closer to the bike you will have to notch it where it touches the bolts holding the top to the bottom.
make sure the end nut is tight making the fold out a little hard. sit on the bike and fold the bar out to where you want it. get off the bike and drill a small hole between the blade bar and the brace bar underneath. remove the top bar (blade bar) and cut the corner into where the small hole is. bolt a small bolt through the top bar. reattach the blade bar. now when fully extended the blade bar will hit the small bar and prevent it going further round. you just saved £240 to cut the cover fold the blade in and put some vaseline along the edge. replace the crash cover and with a little screwdriver push the blade untill it hits the cover remove the cover and cut a line using the vaseline as a guide
That is some impressive engineering. Sounds like you have some experience in the field.
Did you build the brackets for the tool tubes? Did you make a template by any chance? Recently got some but trying to figure out where to put them etc...
I did build it. It was a very simple install. Just a metal plate that I drilled a few holes and mounted. No template, but I might have some pics. I'll look for them and let you know.
What bike to you have?
That would be great. I’ve the 1300 also but with the Honda topbox and mount. But be good to see how you mounted.

It is an awesome forum, I have been a member for many years, and have met many members on RTE's and RTC's, events that they host across the US.
The recovery is a slow and painful one and sadly I might need a second surgery. Riding is out of the question for now, but I am starting to plan some review videos.

Sorry for the delay in replying. That piece is not from Ram. It was custom made for the St1300. I purchased it from the St-owners website through one of the vendors there.

Great video very useful. If you have to travel cross country, I mean example africa countries. Which brand or model of motorcycle you recommend to buy . Especially in comfortable for long distance and availability of spare parts.
If I was travel in countries like Africa, I would either go with the Honda Africa twin, or the BMW GSA-1200 for their on and off road capabilities. Both have been proven to be great bikes for long distance travel, and due to their popularity, finding parts and getting service on them should be fairly simple. Plus you have the added bonus of many tutorials on DIY maintenance on youtube.

Hey thanks. The Givi I have is a 56L. At the time was the biggest. I LOVE it! We can fit both our modular helmets in there.
Large (mine) & small (hers).
The wife doesn't complain at all. I added the Givi backrest, and she loves it.

I also have the Givi 56L top trunk(remember when we called them Scoot Boots?) on my 2016 Kawasaki Versys 1000LT. I also bought the pad for my wife. She doesn't like the pad because it makes her lean forward. I've removed it. It all depends on how the Top Box fits on your bike. It looks like your Givi is a little more rearward on the ST1100. Also full disclosure: we used to have a 1985 Goldwing Aspencade which we called the 2 wheel Barcalounger. My wife doesn't care for the Versys because it places her too high, so most of our touring is done on a 1014 Dyna Super Glide Custom with a Corbin dual touring seat. I love the Versys, so I'll just have to enjoy it on solo tours & day rides in the twisties.
Just bought a 05' ST1300. Going to Alaska from the northeast. Wondering what your thoughts are on aftermarket cruise control? I see you use the throttle lock and cramp buster.
Congrats, you're gonna love that bike.
I considered cruise control, but the dealers don't want to install it (it's a liability) and I don't trust myself with that install.
I use the throttlemeister with the cramp buster like you mentioned, and I have been extremely happy with it. Had it on my CBR before the ST and never had any issues. That combination has worked very well for me on the long distance rides.
Alaska has long been on my bucket list. Going to do it in summer of 2020 but from Florida. Planning on at least 3 weeks on the road.

This one you can order from Europe. I was driving the bike with same model of cruise control. It is a lot cheaper than one from Australia. The problem is you need to find someone to mount it. The problem is, I'm not sure if they are making the same one. On this website they are all sold. Maybe you can look for the model in the USA or Canada? Anyway this fits ST1300.

Hey there. I installed both USB outlets and connected them to the Fuzeblock shown in the video at 9:31 that is under the seat. You can connect it straight to the battery, but I wanted everything to shut off when I turn of the ignition so it's not draining the battery. Hope this helps. Ride safe.

@@stephenbaines7394 Sure. But first of all, do you have a fuzeblock? If not, then your only option is the battery, or maybe tap into the headlight or some other accessory that only comes on when you switch on the ignition. What kind of bike is it?

Those pegs are from a compony called MCL. They are no longer in business. There are some people selling them on St-owners.com website evey now and then.
I bought This model in 2008 brand new and I rode it for 200 miles, my back and shoulders were screaming bloody murder so I went back to the same dealership and traded it in for a Goldwing. I lost a lot of money for that mistake, but My only regret was not getting the Gwing in the first place.
I forgot to mention the lack of cruise control was a nightmare

A simple fix would have been the helibars, but no you would not have had cruise control. That never bothered me much.
The ST & the goldwing are two different animals. The goldwing wins at comfort but can't beat the ST for performance/handling. The goldwing is more suited fol long highway stretches, while the ST will bo loads more fun in the canyons hitting twisties. With that said, I have had no problem riding 600-700 miles a day for 10 days straight, or over 1,000 miles in a single day with the modifications I made.
As I get older and more out of shape, my next bike will most likely be a goldwing.

Does your GP remote turn on/off both GPs in synch?
When it wants to work, it does. It controls alll of them. But sometimes when the hero 7 is turned off, it won't turn on while the hero 4 and session do. Go figure. I asked GoPro about it, their response was " the remote is not made for hero 7".

how do you deal with weight of the bike?not to drop it?
The bike handles very well for is size and weight. It maneuvers like a smaller lighter bike. I have to be more cautious and smooth with it when it's loaded and the Mrs is on the back, but it's not difficult.
That's not to say I haven't had some close calls.

@@ashingco That's not fun. It's a heavy bike to get back up from a drop. Are they just tipovers, or drops while riding? One thing I learned, is no abrupt stops, or launches with the bars turned.

@@MRMRS2wheeler I called Russell to open some dialog about their "day long" seat. They have a 3 month timeline before they can even work on my order. I have to also mail them my original seat while they do the work. I hear a ton of complaints and praise for Corbin seats. I dont know man, spending 6 to 800$ on something that I will be disappointed in really turns me off.
@@joshmoore6165 I hear you Josh, the struggle is real. Finding a comfortable seat is very tricky.
The best tips I can give you are:
1. Find someone with a similar bike and try out their seat.
2. If you live near Russel, you can actually drive in and get the work done in a much shorter time period (a few days) and depending on the bike, they sometimes have a few seats laying around that they will let you burrow while they are working on it.
3. Ask people what they have and if they are happy with it. More specific, how long they spend in the seat before getting uncomfortable.
4. If you do go the RDL route, you could purchase a used seat (OEM for you model) and send that one in. Condition isn't very important as long as the actual seat pan is in good shape. They replace everything else.
Russel Day Long seats have a great reputation with the "Long Distance" riders for a reason. They build the seat specifically to your body, bike, and riding style, while most seats are a "one size fits all deal"
I got lucky with my Saddlemen seat as it came with the bike. I would have never purchased it otherwise.
I had a corbin on my last bike and I hated it. I found it way too stiff and unforgiving for long rides.
I intend on getting a RDL at some point and I have a spare seat to use while the work is getting done.

@@joshmoore6165 Glad to help. I don't think you could go wrong with RDL. Just send them all the pictures they ask for. The more detailed the better they can make your seat. And if I remember correctly, they offer one or two adjustments after you receive it incase there are any issues.
Keep in mind one thing, the RDL seats do raise you higher than the stock seat. If you barely touch the floor, that may be an issue.

I like your helibar horizion handlebars. would also like to get the footpegs but they are not cheap. for mine i made a luggage shelf very similar to how a tow bar mounts to hold a 5kg tent its super handy and for you would hold a full size fuel bottle or a bigger flat canister type. i have a video th-cam.com/video/rNWUBxYMtfo/w-d-xo.html that shows it. if i were you i would install a led flasher relay and change all the bulbs to natgic 7443 from amazon. i would use red on the brake though as white make it look yellow. for headlights i highly recommend novsight h4 led on amazon you will see my bike in the reviews. i also recommend going to bikequip and getting a rad guard and front and rear fenda extenda worth every penny to prevent long term wear
The helibar horizon are probably my favorite mod on the bike. It adds so much comfort for long distance riding. The highway blades help out when I need to stretch the legs. They run about $250 USD. Well worth it imo.
I checked out your video, and man... you take first place in addons haha. I am really diggin that rack on the back. Sweet looking Pan by the way.
I have since the video upgraded to LED's on the headlights and the marker lights, but not the brakes (yet).

@@MRMRS2wheeler You have given me food for thought. i can build the highway blades for silly cheap by using three pieces of flat steel bar sandwich the crash bar between two bolted together and bolt the third piece on top at the end so it will pivot out but i have a deflector kit so my concern is my legs are forced out too much but i might lose the kit and build the highway blades instead. i also want a driver backrest. helibars look awesome just so expensive and they never come up used. The colour really gets me out of shit when people are not paying attention. The shelf was super easy. thanks for your thoughts be well you have a great bike. Thanks for your video
@@luc1ferblack There is a company here called PSR I believe that make a newer version of these blades. They're supposed to be improved over the old ones. I can look for the link if you are interested.
The crash bars are actually from a Goldwing with a plate modified to fit them to the St1300. You can find them on ebay in chrome or black as many people sell them after converting to trikes. I think I paid around $50 USD.
I am still intrigued by that shelf. It's brilliant.

Wouldn’t a gold wing make more sense for your type of riding
I have considered the goldwing, but there a few downfalls that prevent me from pulling the trigger. Fuel range is lower, not as sporty of a ride (which coming from a crotch rocket, I still enjoy) and I am still not ready for the switch to DCT.
But it is not off the table.

Just get an R1200 RT and you'll be all set with almost no modifications. Good video, but for me I think the lay out of all the addones end up being kind of messy
Luis Cuadro Moreno having that many add one can get messy. But the benefits outweigh the mess.
I would love to the r1200, but it is a bit pricey for me, especially maintenance and repairs. I love the st1300, for long distance. It is know to be a bulletproof bike mechanically.

Why a 1300 ?
A 1300 is a bigger engine which has the power to carry 2 riders and all the gear (and there is lots of it). Being so powerful, it doesn't strain as much over long rides and will last much longer then say a 600cc.
Plus the power feels REAL GOOD 😜

No gloves? Don’t you ever worry that, like all humans, if anything happens you put your hands out are take off all the flesh on your hands? Did you discount mesh gloves? Just seems crazy to me.
Hi, I wear gloves during trips or when we are touring, but when I am riding local I usually don't. I have about 7 pairs of gloves. Leather, mesh, textile, waterproof, heated etc. My problem is I can't find a comfortable enough pair that I can stand for more than an hour. They're are just not comfortable.
I do need to keep searching for a more comfortable set that I can tolerate.
