Im a recovered Alcoholic/addict. I am a counselor for a recovery center in southern Oregon. I shred this video with my online group. I appreciate you and Ted talks for making this video possible
I just got out of rehab for the first time in my life. I love these videos. I am forever grateful to recovery institutions. It changed my life. I have a daughter that is struggling with the same addiction that I had. I want her to go to rehab but I know it won't work until she is ready. It took me till I was 45 to even attempt it. All I can do is be there when she is ready. I want her to watch this video.
I just got home from a 90 day residential program today. I am an alcoholic and I have 95 days sober. In rehab I started writing poetry for my friends graduating. Then other housemates started asking for poems too. I will be making a recovery poetry book. Recovery has become a passion for me. I’m so happy I came upon your talk. Thank you!
Wow.. thank you for sharing your story. I firmly believe the sobriety journey is easier when we support each other. I also went through a terrible relationship with substances and, when I quit, my life started! It was so great that I decided to start a TH-cam channel to help people change their relationship with alcohol :') Thanks for the inspo! God bless!
From my own experience, the number one thing that people need to know in a residential setting is, NOBODY gets sober there! What you get is much needed medical care, food, rest, and knowledge from dedicated counselors. Much like you Nichole, I'm sure! The thing that determines whether we will live or die, is what we do the minute we walk out the door and return to the real world. "Relapse" is a term used incorrectly by so many people. You can't relapse from something you were never a part of. THAT'S just being "not ready" to live in the solution a day at a time. A relapse occurs the minute we stop engaging in the path that got us sober in the first place. For those who are "repeat customers" Nichole, ask them how much of an effort they put into sobriety after leaving their last residential stay, compared to the effort they put into drinking and using. It won't even be close, and that applies to people regardless of the number of years of continuous recovery! Not a single person will EVER match the effort regarding sobriety, that they put into trying to kill themselves. Thank you for your dedication Nichole. What you do is honorable in every sense of the word! Mark 5/8/1994
Thank you to TEDxBillings and TED for giving us the opportunity to share our stories with your audience. We are a nonprofit community service who believes the medical community and everyone in recovery are a team for the war against pain, suffering and death caused by addiction. We connect people to resources for free and for purpose. If you need help finding recovery, reach out to whoever you believe in your heart you should. That is the pathway to recovery meant for you. Blessings.
This is an amazing story that kept me on the edge of my seat. This needs to be shared with every person who is struggling so they can see what's possible!
I work at a detox center and get to share my story of recovery all the time... And every time someone says I give them hope, my heart swells with gratitude... It gives my pain from the past purpose❤
Amen! Thank you for being on the front lines. It’s crazy to think how many people could be impacted by just ONE person who you impact… one person impacted me with their story for me to be inspired to recover and help others… you’re that one person for many people 🙏

11+ years of mental health recovery and 1441 days of sobriety. I attend a Smart Recovery Group every Wednesday for the reasons you talk about. My most favorite saying I learned from Al-Anon in the late 90's is LET IT BEGIN WITH ME. Your message is so important and we need to share our lives with everyone. I turn 65 tomorrow and a while ago I didn't know if I would make it to 60. One of my favorite Wayne Dyer sayings is Change your thoughts, Change your life. When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Bro, you are incredible, and I'm so happy I got to meet you before you got sober and watch your journey. I'm proud to be your friend and love you so much, man.
I was clean for 2 an half years an now I’m back to using every day again… I don’t know how I got her moved back home to help my parents financially… from there it went south… I think im trying to find my way back
Adam, this is amazing!! I'm a counselor and I showed my video during one of my groups today. They loved it!! We used it to show how the power of peer support is one of the best tools for recovery. Thank you and continued success with your mission!!
Adam you and others inspired me to keep going w my recovery groups and keep living in God's purpose. Ive been in recovery for 10yrs after 25yrs in addiction. I was a chronic relapser and no1 thought id make it. I did everything different this time around and God willing, July 4th, ill have 4yrs clean and sober and am the GSR of my AA homegroup! My recovery groups are still running and i post daily. But most importantly, ive Gotten closer to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And God has shown me im doing His will by the messages i get telling me i helped them. I ALWAYS tell them that God helped them and I'm just grateful He used me!
Yep… he was a brilliant stock broker who created a new kind of business survey where he traveled around to businesses and reported back to New York which businesses to invest in. Alcohol ruined it for him. He had a huge opportunity that he lost from drinking.
For 37 yrs., Ive been around AA rooms and tried believing in Jesus and saw that that only works for very very few. And then, there's inspirational speakers like this man who come along selling books and encouraging others to start doing what he does. I'm truly glad it works for him. Get your story out brother! The first time I shared mine, there were only a few watching... But every time you share your story, someone watching will be impacted.
Wow!!! Adam, I am a recovering alcoholic too from Nairobi, Kenya. We share a recovery year, I am 4th August 2017. I have been feeling the need to share my story and you have just spoken into that in a powerful way. My life has turned around from what it was while I was using. Today, I know joy, today I know peace, today I know me. It is time I started talking, thank you!!
You are amazing and I am so proud of you! I am grateful you are taking this message as your own and getting out there to help more people with your story and your joy!
I just ran across this and I’m in recovery 9/21/15 thank you for your story I’d love to share my story , recovering out loud wasn’t really a thing but went from suffering in silence to sharing a shot of hope!!!
I've Struggled with Substance abuse and alcoholism for many years. Prison, violent encounters, and self degradation! Sad how many lives I've impacted negatively. 2009 I got out of prison after 10 yrs. I found recovery. 2020 I was a proud business owner only to squander it all again. Now again back on the wagon with 1 yr clean, I'm working in the county jails educating and supporting my peers! There's not a better job for me in this world, nothing more gratifying then helping another find their way in life. Thanks for sharing your experience on a national stage Adam G., keep carrying the message. I'd love to chop it up with you if you end up seeing this.
I am proud of you for surviving the fall and standing back up brother! And yes, there is nothing that has made me feel alive more than helping others. Keep it up brother!
thank you for sharing, one day i will tell my story. its not an easy thing, doing what you did. its easy to talk about the smart and shinney good things but telling something like this, to open up and let it out is very hard. I appriciae it.
It took me 8 years to start opening up with the truth. And another 2 to get sober. And another 2 to publish the book. I hope you let this be the kick you need not to wait as long as I did to share 🙏
Hi, Adam. Very happy to stumble across this. Congratulations on your sober lifestyle and this talk! Your morning affirmations have been a personal favorite for weeks.
You're awesome! I am glad you found it as well! I am going to be making a new Positive Affirmations video soon. What theme do you think would be helpful?
@@RecoveredOnPurpose The content on your website is pretty comprehensive, thanks for providing all of that. Knowledge is power! 🧡📚 Maybe a vid specifically for the very first days of recovery and / or for the addict just out of rehab and back in the real world. It could be kind of a complement to your Relapse Prevention meditation. "I will learn to respect my body and make healthy decisions." "Every hour that I don't use, my body and soul are repairing themselves." "I am proud of myself for choosing Recovery." "I will build a community of support to strengthen me in my Recovery."
Had to watch this video over again tonight. I watched it for the first time a few days ago on Friday morning. After this video I knew I wanted to change and his story definitely started this for me. Thank you Adam for the great talk! I reached out to him and he called me back and has been checking on me every single day like he said he would. Day 3 and I’m still chugging along. Trust me it’s not easy and lots of times today I thought about using but I stayed strong and I’m glad I did. Few more days and this too shall pass! Looking forward to putting all of this behind me and moving forward with my life. Thank you Adam! Love u bro!💯🤙🏼👌🏼
Currently in school to be an addiction counselor, looking to provide some home for others. I'll be 8 years sober this summer. I did it on my own and wouldn't recommend but it can be done. I am also writing a book for my boys about my past so they'll always have some answers to possible questions should they need them. This video has me thinking I should expand the audience.
Wow. What a powerful message. I am 4 months clean sober after a 4.5 year relapse that almost took me out. This relapse happened after I had 7 years clean in the states. I started my own TH-cam channel called Dissapointing Your Demons to tell my story and hopefully save lives. Even if it's just one. I have 77 subscribers as I write this with about 2k views on my videos combined. Recently a woman from NZ contacted me to let me know that my story, my channel, has helped her to dig herself out of deep dark hole that is alsoholism/ addiction. And that, my friends, has made what I am doing all worthwhile. Thank-you for this content and this message. But for the grace of god go I...
Amen my friend! Keep going and never worry about the numbers... I NEVER thought about numbers to chase them... I thought about sharing the message and knowing someone could hear it and change their lives with everything I put out... I grew from 0 to here too my friend. Keep going! I am proud of you.
@RecoveredOnPurpose thank you for responding! This made my day! I don't worry about the numbers. When I started the thing I thought maybe 10 people would watch. It's not monetized and i don't think I ever want it to be. The way I look at it is my channel is as big or as small as God wants it to be. I'm just trying to get the message out there that there is a way out and don't give up. Ever.
This video is really amazing. I am feeling each word that you are saying. I also have an addictive personality and I am recovering. It's been two months sober. I found my way to recovery from TH-cam videos, Internet, Josh talks channel from TH-cam. I have scheduled one hour daily to watch someone's story on TH-cam or anywhere. As it helps me to feel that there is hope.😊
You are awesome and congratulations on your recovery! It is amazing how we are able to find the message from 1,000's of miles away on a device in our hands that helps us recover like they did in the old days through the mail! Proud of you.
@@RecoveredOnPurpose Thanks 😊. I live in a rural Area and going to support groups is not possible. Although people suffer from alcoholism in my village too but they never accept that they have problem with alcohol. My brother is 90 kg and he wants to reduce weight but he never asks for help or support and tries to do it on his own. I try to share and tell them to share problems but it doesn't work. Anyways I want to join you. Is there a way??
Yea, the disease is very insidious. I have a sponsee who did the same thing. Coma for 2 months, was shooting up 72 hours out of the hospital. How can people think it is a matter of will power?
Its a shame that our society still criminalizes a disease which is as devastating as cancer. Stip building jails and start building rehabilitation centers. I am in recovery. Thanks to the rehabs i have needed and the people who run them. I owe my life to them. ❤
It still does for me on a regular basis watching people's lives change. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be alive and help others. Very blessed.
Sorry, but AA's success rates are 8%-12%. But there are a ton of great alternatives to check out, for anyone who didn't have success with AA, try SMART Recovery, She Recovers, Recovery Darma, Women for Sobriety, The Phoenix, Lifering, there are others 🥰🥰 I'm so glad that we have so many choices now! .. I'm 1 1/2 years sober with Women for Sobriety. Sending love to you all on your journey 💜
Yes! That’s the message being shared here also! Only one other person on the list of the books I showed here did 12 steps. 😊 proud of you on your 1.5 years! Keep it up!
Love you Chan! Thank you for always being a huge support and a positive influence in this space. Keep going with everything you are doing with your story and your music and many many multiples more people will be impacted and have their lives changed!
I told my friend that drugs have never been fun for me all they do and did is lead me to others who used some where I fit in all my life I've been different in that world but as long as I had drugs I wasn't completely alone now I'm back where I started all alone no one to talk to
It's tough. Ultimately we're alone but fortunately that's only one person we must care for. I think all addicts have a deep longing but once you realize nobodys coming it really opens up.
Dear guys, never lose hope. You are precious how you are and you realy matter to the world. We need you and I need you, even if we are not connected. You have everything to beat additction and live a life in freedom and prosperity. Just walk in the direction of a additction free life, understand that failing is part of the process and get your healing from that desease. But whatever happens just keep moving in the right direction, you will find the right support over time, you will learn the right things and you will recover. My promise. Every small progress you make should motivate you even if an addictfree life seems far away. Just keep going in the right direction. Good things take time. Dont feel lost or hopeless. Probably you are changing right now for good. I don't know you but I have courage that you will have your life that is ment for you. ❤❤❤
This is great information. Have you seen Dr. KJ Foster and Fostering Resilience? She also has great info on sobriety, recovery, mental health, meditation, etc.
Absolutely. Yes. 100%. I work with therapists all over the country who deeply deeply care about us in the community. There is a clinical aspect of addiction treatment, and there is a recovery side of addiction recovery. We need to work together and not step on each other's toes so we can help more people. Treatment/therapy/clinical is different than a recovery program where addicts and alcoholics help each other without motive.
What medicine to use to help yourself at home and not at a center bcuz if u can dot there you can do it at home also, same at the place is at home, any info or help i can go get or use at home
I have a home remedie video on our channel, but I recommend always getting medical help if it is available. We also need to be around community because it is so hard to stay clean/sober without people around us who get it and have recovered.
were missing a good point here. Dude has a disease that left untreated equals death and they arrested and charged him and threatened jail, not rehab, not treatment, but jail. Unless he was dealing, jail shouldnt be used to force addicts to be clean. its ridiculous
I am 100% with you and still have this thing hanging on my head as a life sentence to check a box as a felon because I had about .1 grams of dope left on me and paraphernalia. It has progressed quite a bit since 2015 when this happened... But, I am with you, there is a lot more work to do around this disease. Thank you for the comment and message.
Si, yo tambien. I am going to make a Spanish channel soon and take all my videos and translate them. I speak about 50% Spanish and lived in South America for a couple years. A lot of people all over the world need help and a message.
It is worth it. It is so much better on this side. It takes work, dedication, and a strong decision to do whatever it takes... But it is possible and extremely rewarding. Message me if you want to talk about options for help.
Am I ever gonna want it? Am I? I want to want it..... but I don't.... I'm selfish. my babies are grown. It is my time. I just don't enjoy being sober. Why? Is it because I was born an addict?? Am I just bound to be one??
I can’t speak for you… I wanted it for years, but it came down to me doing what I had to to make it happen… I have seen men and women with grown children completely change their relationships with them and be happier than ever in recovery… and I’ve seen people suffering with addiction into their 60’s trying to get clean/sober… no one needs to tell anyone what to do with their life. If you want to stop, reach out any time. I’m easy to find on Facebook or google and I always reply and always will ❤
I haven’t had that experience with 12 step programs. I have had the experience of sharing my personal story of experience strength and hope with people and it helping the ones it is meant to help. We all have a story worth sharing. Including you.
How are you guys helping by talking at different places but NO REAL help or info to use just talking abut who help you what did they do to help explain its really real. I cannot go NO where but home any info, help or medicine to take while on your journey to recovery
Addiction is a hard thing to understand when you have not experienced it. I get it and don’t blame you for having that thought. It’s hard to imagine a disease centering in the mind that takes away someone’s will power. We love you though ❤

This guy Ted has a lot of wisdom. I’m glad Ted is clean and sober today. Thanks for sharing! Good talk.
Thank you for the encouragement! My name is Adam, but Ted has a ton of wisdom too 😂
Maybe a vid specifically for the very first days of recovery and / or for the addict just out of rehab and back in the real world.
Thank you Adam! And Recovery on Purpose for being a change maker in my life and others!
Love you bro!
@@RecoveredOnPurpose Love you Brotha! 💪
Bout to check out Adam on his Ted talk Aa
Love you too brother and I’m proud of you 🎉
Currently in school to be an addiction counselor, looking to provide some home for others. I'll be 8 years sober this summer. I did it on my own and wouldn't recommend but it can be done. I am also writing a book for my boys about my past so they'll always have some answers to possible questions should they need them. This video has me thinking I should expand the audience.
Great work Bryan!
Ever.
@@Disappointingyourdemons When you're ready and have some systems built for it, let's do an episode my friend.
@@RecoveredOnPurpose that would be amazing. I'm totally down for that. Thank you! How would I get in contact with you?
I should this video to a group I teach at work for relapse prevention and they love it and gave them hope to change and help others
love, love, love, this! such a true and heartfelt message. Thank you sir, i needed to hear this today
You’re amazing. Thank you for the encouragement! 🙏 ❤ 🙏
Is there a way??
just played this in my group i facilitate and thank you brother!!!!!
Amazing! I love hearing this. I hope more and more and more people will be inspired to share their stories and help others!
I can relate was on life support n still woke up from a coma n shot up it's crazy asf
Yea, the disease is very insidious. I have a sponsee who did the same thing. Coma for 2 months, was shooting up 72 hours out of the hospital. How can people think it is a matter of will power?
Amazing story, going to help so many!
Thank you for the kind words brother!
Its a shame that our society still criminalizes a disease which is as devastating as cancer. Stip building jails and start building rehabilitation centers. I am in recovery. Thanks to the rehabs i have needed and the people who run them. I owe my life to them. ❤
Amen! I have the amazing opportunity of working in the field outside of this nonprofit work we do. Bless you and your recovery!
This is an amazing story ❤
You’re amazing!
This is fire 🔥
It is a great message -- the dates on Bill's story threw me off. But yeah - great job! Proud of you
What about them with Bill's story? Just to clarify. Thank you for the message!
May God bless you.
God bless you too ❤
There is hope❤
Yes there is!
Sure is. END DRUG PROHIBITION
I love this im 4 years sober me and my wife
So proud of you! And your wife! Sober partners have a strong story together!
What you do is amazing my friend.😊 Keep fighting the good fight. I would love to share my story.
Thank you for the kind words 🙌 it starts with sharing it with one person. Then another. Then another.
Man that jerked some tears 😢❤❤
It still does for me on a regular basis watching people's lives change. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be alive and help others. Very blessed.
That's a powerful story ❤
Thank you! ❤
hey man i love you brother and god loves you too.
Love you too brother! Thank you so much for saying that!
Awesome story.
Thank you Michael! I just hope the people who need it hear it!
Sorry, but AA's success rates are 8%-12%.
But there are a ton of great alternatives to check out, for anyone who didn't have success with AA, try SMART Recovery, She Recovers, Recovery Darma, Women for Sobriety, The Phoenix, Lifering, there are others 🥰🥰
I'm so glad that we have so many choices now! .. I'm 1 1/2 years sober with Women for Sobriety.
Sending love to you all on your journey 💜
Yes! That’s the message being shared here also! Only one other person on the list of the books I showed here did 12 steps. 😊 proud of you on your 1.5 years! Keep it up!
You are inspiring. Please reach out. There are so many things that I want to share with you about my journey and my hopes...
Let's go that's amazing!!!!
Love you Chan! Thank you for always being a huge support and a positive influence in this space. Keep going with everything you are doing with your story and your music and many many multiples more people will be impacted and have their lives changed!
GOING ON 6 MONTHS CLEAN FROM OPIOIDS AND WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITH JESUS AT MY SIDE... JESUS CHRIST IS TRULY KING 👑👑👑
Congratulations brother! So stoked for you and proud of you!
Congratulations!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Love this
Love you. Thank you for the encouragement 🙏
I need help
Please get help. It is possible. Don't do it alone. There is support out there. You matter. It is possible! God bless you!
Me too 😢 just got home from bender,as much as I try it won’t stop i don’t know what to do so I searched this…
Dear guys, never lose hope. ❤❤❤
Call never use alone or Rachel's line. They will help you.
Same here man! I hope everyone that posted on this is still with us. Don’t worry about solving all the problems now, just focus on not giving up.
2/5/84❤. 12 step model.
Thank you for paving the way! ❤
Perfect!
🙌🙌🙌
This is great information. Have you seen Dr. KJ Foster and Fostering Resilience? She also has great info on sobriety, recovery, mental health, meditation, etc.
My brother needs help.
How about links to all the podcasts, books, and speeches? That would be helpful.
This wasn’t meant to promote the business or link to those things. It was meant to empower others to share their story. We are not hard to find.
I'm so curious on how to write my own book if u could reach out I would greatly appreciate it
So as someone who has not dealt with addiction in my personal life, can I still have a place in helping others in recovery as a therapist
Absolutely. Yes.
Story was on mothersday weekend bill and bob met
Yes! And Bob drank again about 3 weeks later when he went to a doctor convention and then he got sober... And now we are alive haha
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤❤❤
Why’d he have to look at me like that. Good move sir. 🎉😮😅
God I hope, I can make it out like you
were missing a good point here.
I wish Tedx videos had subtitles in Spanish.
Si, yo tambien. I am going to make a Spanish channel soon and take all my videos and translate them. I speak about 50% Spanish and lived in South America for a couple years. A lot of people all over the world need help and a message.
i want to quit.
I’m easy to find on Facebook or google and I always reply and always will ❤
I need help someone who believes in me
I do Do you believe you can
@@Richie-489 Yes I do I believe in me
You’re capable!
You can do this but you got to want it more than anything
AA DOESNT CARE ABOUT YOUR LIFE OR RECOVRY!!!! UNLESS YOUR TESTIMONY TELLS THEIR VERSION OF YOUR testimony
?
Good 8 minutes of actually sharing how to get sober another 10 telling me to buy his book or watch his podcast, joke.
That was not the intention of the talk and I am sorry you felt that way. I hope the good 8 minutes helps.
Prevention what BS. Just change your habit or is it too much to ask for yourself...
Addiction is a hard thing to understand when you have not experienced it. I get it and don’t blame you for having that thought. It’s hard to imagine a disease centering in the mind that takes away someone’s will power. We love you though ❤
Roy, you have no idea of the struggles and pain of both the addiction or their families. Please do some research before making crass comments
