I resonate with a lot of this and I found your straight forward feedback helpful too. I used to do design (which I'm rubbish at) to make ends meet even though I was a much stronger illustrator. It was just the type of work my friends, and friends of friends, happen to need. Skip forward a few years into my mishmash of an art career (I did costumes, graphic design, portraits, terrible logos, etc...) and I had become a full time freelance digital illustrator. For the last nine years I've drawn for film/TV advertising and I've been incredibly fortunate, sneaking through without advertising or intentionally branding my own work. Now I'm hoping to focus more on my "fine art" career and even though I work in advertising, I am not at all comfortable making a brand for myself.
Appreciate your channel so much. I’m literally studying your channel before I launch my own online shop for prints of my original work. I’m very nervous. I don’t want my real name out there on the internet. I want to be as anonymous as possible 😣
I’ve been using the pseudonym Imelda Green for 5 years and never saw any disadvantages. I chose it because my real name is just impossible to pronounce abroad and I was looking for clients internationally. Funnily enough, it only happens rarely that international clients find me, but I don’t think it has anything to do with my pseudonym or real name. Great points Kendyll, thank you for the vid
Thanks for this video! I also attempted to develop various brand names over the years for design work, but illustration just resonated with me more. I thought about creating a brand name for my illustration work, but I am already all over the search engine under my own name as an artist 😅 lucky for me to have a very unique name haha
I have started going to an art space (MADE StLouis) to work on art (hobby) a few times a week to spend an hour or so sketching and I am getting SO much done. I then remembered your reasoning for renting the studio space and it totally totally make sense now. Informative video as always. Thanks. ❤️
"I just like bread" 😂😂 Great video! It makes me feel better to know that other creatives are also struggling with their branding. I don't want to use my legal name, or even my nickname, only because I'm not really a fan of either. My married name (Hudy) is annoying to pronounce to people/help them spell. I spell it and always get "H-U-V-Y?" or "H-U-E-Y?" repeated back to me. I've been trying for years to find a way to get my name into my brand name as frannerd and katnipp have. I want to be known for the fun, quirky illustrator that I am and using my legal name feels too "serious" haha
I feel you on the tough name! "Kendyll" with a y is bad enough -- but adding "Hillegas" to the mix makes a real mouthful. People mispronounce or misspell them all.the.time. For what it's worth, I like the name Becky!💞
The main thing why I chose a brand / pseudonym is because I have a kinda rare surname that is being spelled wrong in every imaginable way already all my life and it just annoys me 🙄😅
That's weird ... I personally find your name quite easy. I'd say welcome to the club of a life of misspelled surnames then :D (Mine is Avenius by the way ... got everything already here. From beer brands, to car names, to half english-ized versions ... At least I maybe lately found out where it actually comes from.)
11:47 "I just like bread" LOL! Few things have ever been more relatable. Great video as always, Kendyll.
😂😂😂 thank you Emma! I can always tell that I'll get along with someone if we agree on the importance of that point!

Have you launched yet?

Ahh, YOU'RE Imelda Green? I always see you instagram and had noticed the name. It's a good one! Very memorable.
Kendyll Hillegas uh ah, you know who I am 😱😍 Yes that’s me!
I really like your channel, this is very informative for a starting artist.
Hey Kendyll, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said it’ll develop naturally over time. -kali

Excellent discussion & talk. Full of useful information.
Thank you!
Thanks so much for this video. It answers a questing I was wondering for a long time and was unsure what to do. It really helped!
Yay! I'm so glad to hear that, Lotty! Thank you!
I have a question too, do you have any info on trademarking? I want to do this to protect my brand.
The main thing why I chose a brand / pseudonym is because I have a kinda rare surname that is being spelled wrong in every imaginable way already all my life and it just annoys me 🙄😅
SAME. I wish I had done that too now. Hillegas gets so many crazy mispronunciations.

may I ask you if that was done officially like paper governments?
Thank you sweetheart.
I am struggling finding clients, how and where can I find clients?
I've made some videos about this before! Try looking back through some of my older videos.
