All he wanted was to do the right thing. And they hated, hunted him for that. All of them united against the one person who was the only decent, noble human being among them. Some of them actively fought against him, cursing him and starting malicious rumors about him. Others just did nothing, which is probably worse. The few true supporters were silenced.
