I've just had one of those beautiful moments where another human has provided me with EXACTLY what I needed! I've been leaning into my piano in the past year as a reaction to some rough life stuff. I spent the first half of the year obsessed with Jazz, but that just led me further back in time to classical. I'm a sucker for big emotions and romanticism, so naturally gravitated towards these stunning ballades of Chopin's. After listening to them on repeat for weeks, I decided I wanted to be able to play them. I tried my best but was struggling with only sheet music. I could tell exactly what I needed to help me along and THIS VIDEO IS IT. Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge, passion, and time. You're an extremely efficient educator and a brilliant pianist. It's people like you who keep this glorious music alive. I've been playing Piano for about 16 years. Work and other things got in the way of my practicing and motivation over the years. Now I am 30 and have been very motivated to tackle pieces I never had the confidence for. Started working on this 3 days ago and I'm so excited to be working through page 6 so far. This video helped me to correct a minor mistake I was making. Extremely helpful. And I love how he gives you an idea of how the composer might have been feeling in each section when he wrote it, as well as giving instructions on the Dynamics. Thank you!!

@@samuelguzmann Personally I think the middle section with the first Key change is the hardest. (Mostly because I have small hands) But the Coda is hard to play even as slow as 160 BPM for me currently.
the worst part is: after months of practicing you think youre done and then you discover a new performance with completely different accents, or a different interpretation completely and you think "wow I want to implement these thoughts into my playing, too". Youre never done with a piece like this. For example: Horowitz vs Zimmermann - two different pieces Overall I like Zimmermann more, but some ideas in horowitz interpretation are just incredible. Especially in the beginning he emphasizes the left hand WAY more than Zimmermann and I love that. I dont like his Coda though, for example.

As someone who was taught to play with a huge emphasis on technique and performance, I was actually surprised at how well you go over this. You don’t see videos that really offer something very often. Saying that, this is probably more useful to someone like me who has already had 17+ years and has got a grip on her technique and mastering some of the turns and attention to detail on touch and weight.

I was afraid of picking up this piece for years. With the help of this video, I'm close to adding la Ballade into my repertoire. 13:06 in the first bar (measure 50) - I think I spot a mistake here. You go an octave lower on the first F#-B♭ of the measure, when the ottava sign ends after the measure. That said, this video has helped me a lot and still does, which I can't thank you enough for :)

I couldn't find if you had addressed this anywhere already, but I did notice at 13:50 in practice section 2, a Bb is played where a G and F# are written in the second half of those two arpeggio measures. This happens again at 14:05 with those two arpeggios that have the Gb and F written.

This, for some reason, made me regre at the fact that I didn't try that much in my piano in my piano classes. I started not taking it seriously and I learned so little in 2 years. I am going to start taking classes again and this time I will for sure try harder to be able to play these hard piano peaces without needing videos and just the notes on the paper.

bro idk what it is about this ballade, but everytime I listed to it I feel an unbelievable amount of motivation to improve at piano and one day be able to play this.
There will be much more details you would tend to pay attention to as you get better than piano. 'Harder' doesnt mean technically harder nor getting all the right notes and playing them at the right time, but 'harder' as in finding the right dynamics right phrasing right expression and feeling to the music and conveying these properly to the audience.

If only from couple of months .. i would not recommend you to do this .. Trust me you will regret later ^^ instead of that go more for basics about technics and stuffs (Bach anna magdalena, Czerny op 599 and scales+ arpeggios ).. Once you feel confident with these books .. you start to increase the level (Bach 2nd part invention, Czerny op 299+ scales+arpegios) .. After that you can start wth Bach 3rd part invention with some Chopin Mazukras, Preludes, and Valses (ofc the easy one) .. The ballade no 1 is still a very high level compared to what i cited ... (pls don't think that i am selfish or smthing i m just trying to guide you since you learned by your self, don't push your self too fast) and Good Luck !! :)
@@AsaWRLD47 Sry i don't remember the names and the books are not with me from a while .. u can find anything good over the internet but if you do the books i have mentioned for you in a serious way with a Metronome ( for rythm if u find it hard at first) .. you will really improve a lot for sure... If u think the books i sent previously are hard to begin .. you can start with a book called Beyer ( you can find it on IMSLP for free) .. it's really the basics of learning the piano and it's so good for a starter :)
im a 15 year old pianist and i understand how difficult this piece is but my new years resolution is to learn it this year no matter how much practice and how many hours it will take! So glad i found this video, Im going to try to take 2-3 weeks to practice each section, possibly more for the ones which are more difficult. Ill keep updating!!! btw i dont have a teacher but my mom knows how to play and she occasionally helps when i have questions but this will mostly be done on my own
You're just not ready for this piece most likely. Get a teacher, and don't attempt by yourself. If you haven't even played any of Chopin's Etudes, you're not ready for this piece.
One must always remember... that a ballade is the telling a story. A story shared between... the two of us. as in: "Remember when....?" and the other remembers the theme and answers back. "Oh yes, and then..." Each hand speaks and then joins in the telling of the story. And then the themes are remembered... and remembered to this day. As a musical form, a ballade is a unique musical form. The ability to tell a story with two hands is paramount here> Left-hand and right-hand conversation. Ballade in g minor. A conversation... kind of. Never rush. Delight in being able to slow down... and create an accelerando... at will. A Ballade.

At 13:45, the small g minor arpeggio that spans one measure, you play a Bb in the right hand on beat 5, when it is written as a G, I think you do this for some of the other arpeggios too

This, for some reason, made me regre at the fact that I didn't try that much in my piano in my piano classes. I started not taking it seriously and I learned so little in 2 years. I am going to start taking classes again and this time I will for sure try harder to be able to play these hard piano peaces without needing videos and just the notes on the paper.
i have no idea how should i thank you paul for this, cause i started this piece to learn today and i was so confused, then i found you! i literally feel gilty of using ur experiences free, the least thing i can do is to appreaciate youre effor from bottom of my hear
bro idk what it is about this ballade, but everytime I listed to it I feel an unbelievable amount of motivation to improve at piano and one day be able to play this.

nezkeys79 You get more ambitious and that results in you trying out harder pieces as the years pass by...
You also notice more of what you should improve on, making it harder.
Still dony see how that makes the ballade harder. The ballade should get easier as you get better at piano, not harder
There will be much more details you would tend to pay attention to as you get better than piano. 'Harder' doesnt mean technically harder nor getting all the right notes and playing them at the right time, but 'harder' as in finding the right dynamics right phrasing right expression and feeling to the music and conveying these properly to the audience.
Over time, playing notes on piano gets easier but also more difficult because our understanding of "music" grows.
A very wonderful tutorial Paul, thank you so much. It's well organized, and you go into such great detail of the piece's subtle nuances. Please release one on Chopin Etude Op. 10 No.5! (I'm currently learning it at the moment myself lol)

If only from couple of months .. i would not recommend you to do this .. Trust me you will regret later ^^ instead of that go more for basics about technics and stuffs (Bach anna magdalena, Czerny op 599 and scales+ arpeggios ).. Once you feel confident with these books .. you start to increase the level (Bach 2nd part invention, Czerny op 299+ scales+arpegios) .. After that you can start wth Bach 3rd part invention with some Chopin Mazukras, Preludes, and Valses (ofc the easy one) .. The ballade no 1 is still a very high level compared to what i cited ... (pls don't think that i am selfish or smthing i m just trying to guide you since you learned by your self, don't push your self too fast) and Good Luck !! :)

@@AsaWRLD47 Sry i don't remember the names and the books are not with me from a while .. u can find anything good over the internet but if you do the books i have mentioned for you in a serious way with a Metronome ( for rythm if u find it hard at first) .. you will really improve a lot for sure... If u think the books i sent previously are hard to begin .. you can start with a book called Beyer ( you can find it on IMSLP for free) .. it's really the basics of learning the piano and it's so good for a starter :)

Really helpful! Before Im confused about several fingering issues but now it's solved.....
im a 15 year old pianist and i understand how difficult this piece is but my new years resolution is to learn it this year no matter how much practice and how many hours it will take! So glad i found this video, Im going to try to take 2-3 weeks to practice each section, possibly more for the ones which are more difficult. Ill keep updating!!! btw i dont have a teacher but my mom knows how to play and she occasionally helps when i have questions but this will mostly be done on my own

You're just not ready for this piece most likely. Get a teacher, and don't attempt by yourself. If you haven't even played any of Chopin's Etudes, you're not ready for this piece.

One must always remember... that a ballade is the telling a story. A story shared between... the two of us. as in: "Remember when....?" and the other remembers the theme and answers back. "Oh yes, and then..." Each hand speaks and then joins in the telling of the story. And then the themes are remembered... and remembered to this day. As a musical form, a ballade is a unique musical form. The ability to tell a story with two hands is paramount here> Left-hand and right-hand conversation. Ballade in g minor. A conversation... kind of.
Never rush. Delight in being able to slow down... and create an accelerando... at will. A Ballade.

At 13:45, the small g minor arpeggio that spans one measure, you play a Bb in the right hand on beat 5, when it is written as a G, I think you do this for some of the other arpeggios too
