My sister got this as a Christmas gift a good while back and I quite enjoyed it, but a) my family doesn't really play too many strategic games, so it had been gathering dust, even though I really would love playing it more and b) that I wouldn't even have a chance to add expansions if I wanted to, kinda irked me a bit ....
You aren't missing much as this was widely considered the best version of Carc for a long time. You also don't need expansions if your family won't play. I hope that makes you feel a little better.
@@PurgeReviewsboardgames Hence the reissue they did recently, I guess 🤔 I'll try to be a nice girl and ask them if they'll play it with me at Christmas. We'd usually be celebrating at my granny's, but as we're probably heading into another complete lockdown here in Germany and nobody wants to risk our grandmother's life (she's over 90, after all), I guess we'll have more time on our hands than we would usually have. What better time than that to dust off and rediscover some older games 🥰?
@@PurgeReviewsboardgames Handy video anyway. Played the game on boardgamearena and it seem to have the newer art, menhirs instead of gold for example, but otherwise the same.
I've tried the base-game of Carcassone (owned and purged) and have (and have played) the Steam version. Perhaps it's me, but I didn't enjoy Carcassone that much. It hasn't been installed on my computer for a while now, and I doubt it will be any time soon (or ever). Not sure if that's because of the tile-placement mechanism that I don't like, but since I also don't like (owned and purged) "Lord of the Rings: The Search", I think that's a safe bet. "...if I do play Carcassone, which is never, let's be honest..." Those could have been my words. Thanks for the review!
I completely disagree with your assessment Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers is my 7th favorite game of all time but the original base game with expansions is only my 61st favorite game. We have a big box of the original and there are several that exist, and thus I have not played every original expansion, but have played all that came in our Big Box. A couple I don't like at all, a few are okay, and a couple I do really enjoy. But neither of these is my favorite Carcassonne and that would be: Carcassonne: Amazonas. As that is currently my 4th favorite game of all time. As I shared below in another comment, Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers, does have half an expansion, but it is horrible. I do consider the nugget tiles like an expansion in the game itself. The game is superior to the original Carcassonne, even with many expansions. I also want to say, another version of Carcassonne is also better than the original and that is: Ark of the Covenant, which is the Bible version. That is my 35th favorite game. There is another Carcassonne like game, which is also better than the original and that is Isle of Skye, which is my 12th favorite game, and HIGHLY recommend the 2nd expansion for that game. The 1st is okay, but the 2nd is great.
You seem like more of an expert on Carcassonne than I am. They all play roughly the same with some tweaks to each. It depends on which tweak you enjoy the most.
When we say base game. Is there only one version or is there a newer one that might have a different art or something? I’m asking as I don’t want to get one and find out some expansions are not compatible
@@PurgeReviewsboardgames False. There is half of a mini expansion, but it's horribly unbalanced and will never use it. It is called: Carcassonne: King & Scout. Half is for Hunters but the other half is for another game.
I also prefer the base game version and add expansions depending on how complex you want the game to be :)
Yes, and I think that is a strike against this version.

Is the forest complete in your example @ 07:40?
Great call. I had to zoom into see that but I think the answer would be no. That is a tough one to see. Thank you for pointing it out.

Yes, I'm sort of over the whole series. I've just moved past it.
I completely disagree with your assessment

@@PurgeReviewsboardgames It should be noted there is a reprint with new art and a slight rule change. Tom from the Dice Tower did a review.

This is a standalone with zero expansions. For the original Carc, there are two versions. The newest is the Z Man Games edition. I hope that helps.

There are I believe, 2 other editions, including a new edition that came out recently. No editions of more expansions though.
Purging this .....but keeping SeaFall????! :D
Nope, not keeping Seafall.
