Astonishing! The Presto con fuoco is driven like the middle or even the late sonatas, revealing the indispensable drama. It's there from the beginning and Backhaus never misjudges what the score tells him. He embraces the indecorous as well as the poetry. He doesn't play down to it or edit or embellish it; he lets it speak and doesn't try to tame it.
Very interesting how the repetition of the exposition seemed to become more important for Backhaus here at the very end of his career. Just as in the Waldstein Backhaus played the repetition in a 1969 recital. He didn’t do that in his Decca recordings and not in earlier live performances either. Fabulous how the 85 years old master still is able to realize his musical intentions. Bravo!!!
What a thoroughly inspired live performance here by the still virtuosic octogenarian, Wilhelm Backhaus. Delightful from beginning to end! Thanks for sharing this marvelous rendition.
What a brilliant artist! He was a gift to this world... May he rest in peace and I hope he knows how deeply appreciated and admired he still is... GENIUS!
El año que se atribuye a esta grabación en vivo es el del fallecimiento del gran pianista. Resulta difícil aceptar la fecha si se compara el vigor de esta versión con el del pianista del último recital, precisamente del mismo año.
Wonderful. Backhaus at 85, shortly before his passing, still was one of the best.

Thanks for post. Amazing performance for an 85 year old. Love this sonata.

Grande Intérprete de Beethoven !!! Um Primor !
This is shockingly MAGNIFICENT! Thanks SO much for the upload!

im guessing this is not from his last recital, it was a bit curious but he decided not to go into the last movement
Odd. I hear a last movement...
