I'm sure Backaus was old enough to hear the "famous" students of Liszt and Chopin... and they all played with such GREAT refinement... an utter elegance... and their sound was always more "relaxed" and subtler then what we normally hear now a days... For those of you who find Backhaus' playing of the Opus 25 Etudes impressive here, I recommend you look for his 1953 Lugano recital, which features seven of them (1,2,3,6,8,9,5) along with the Nocturne in D flat major and the Waltz in E flat major. The playing is truly magical -- even more flowing and beautiful in tone than with this early legendary recording. You can find it on the super budget Membran 10cd box, "Great Pianists" (along with recitals by Gulda, Serkin, Cherkassky, Berman, Gilels, Anda, Cziffra, and others).

Contrast 25.7 with 25.12, Wow. It's impressive when you can't even tell the same man is playing both etudes except for them being played on the same piano. The styles are so different. And I don't mean just the mood of the pieces.
Its such a human play not like the unhuman Pollini play. The phrases are beautiful done the structure is solid and the sound never aggresiv but round. no lack of energy or power though. despite of freedom of expression great understanding and respect of the text and his details.
This assessment is delibarate libel -- not new, you commented Backhaus' play of the etudes no. 10 likewise and seem to be fond of your spiteful formulation. Backhaus not only certainly masters all technical difficulties but makes the exercises sing. Bravo.

Imagine if they had the recording technics back then like they have now. Wilhelm Backhaus playing was just incredible.

I had the privilege of attending his recitals when he came to Buenos Aires many years ago, at the Teatro Colón. He was outstanding !!!!!!
