I live in a beautiful college town in Maine. I can give you some insight into why the land in Camden won't go even for free. Camden, if you aren't aware, is where most of the celebrities with summer homes in Maine live. The land is subject to SO many prohibitive business regulations and taxes and other overhead costs that having a profitable business is not really possible. Also, since it is populated by the upper class and Mainers have referendums on everything, depending on what type of business you try to open you might have a huge fight from the locals who hate change. Maine is not a business friendly state. Tourism is our biggest employer. If it weren't for tourism there would be no jobs in Maine. Most people work in places they can't afford to live in, like Portland. Camden is crazy gentrified as well. Perhaps that will help clear things up, I hope you found it helpful. ❤😊
HD Warrior I lived in Freeport, in order to afford a decent home at a decent price I had to relocate to Florida!! I looked at a small 2 bedroom house in Portland- 287,000 - got a 4 bdrm home in Florida for 116,000 - was able to claim homestead for my property, so my property taxes won’t increase while I live in it ! I loved Maine- hated winters!

To combat the negative effect of inflation, it’s a good idea to diversify your portfolio across different asset classes, such as stocks, bonds, and real estate, since this can help protect your portfolio against inflation. I’ve heard testimonies of people accruing over $550k during this period
One way to save your stock portfolio against inflation is to invest in stocks of companies that are likely to perform well even in times of high inflation. There are actually a lot of ways to make high yields in a crisis, but such trades are best done under the supervision of an expert

As a resident of Maine, while our winters can be cold, when you're on the coast up here we have a warm ocean current so the coastal regions tend to have milder, warmer winters than our inland cities. Camden is a beautiful and amazing little town and definitely worth checking out!
I’m thinking the 2-car garage thing in Elwood, NE is to make sure you’re building an actual house rather than a trailer (NOT a homestead). Definition of a homestead is a temporary place that you just pass through generally for the job, it’s why trailers are good for those places. Sounds like NE is actually interested in growing the city.
Yes great narration. I considered Muskegon. It is beautiful. But in doing my environmental research before buying property I learned the west coast of MI has heavy particulate pollution in the air blowing across the lake from Chicago. I landed farther north and a bit inland. 45 to 50 min to TC. 25 to Cadillac. Hour to main freeway to downstate friends. Perfect. Wooded, hilly, and of course lots of rivers and lakes. Smoking deal too.
I'm only a minute in, but usually there are covenants attached to it like, "You must build a home worth at least x in x amount of time" or "You must be employed laying income tax", etc.
No, the land is free. When you buy a house it’s only part of the price, you’re paying for the land. And after you pay, you pay a tax on the property twice every year. And of course they’re looking to generate revenues, the land is just sitting there earning nothing, and the city owns the property, instead of selling it They are giving it away.
Been there and in Rockland, too. Beautiful area, but overall, Maine is a strange, sort of "Twilight Zone" sort of a state. Have gone up there for ten years to see our son and his family. I would NEVER live up there...ever.

I looked into the Camden, Maine situation - It’s toxic land where a tannery was build years ago. Lots of toxic chemicals everywhere. They cleaned it up, but it’s possible it’s in the water supply forever. Also you have to promise to build immediately at a cost of $200K. Then you have to hire 24 people within a year. That’s a lot to take on for “free” land. I can see why there are no takers.

I’m about an hour South of Camden, it’s nice, I like the scenic route to Bar Harbor on Rt1 in Maine. Camden is tricky for business, just like every coastal area north of Portland. Tourism is great a few months a year. Fishing is hard work, but some of these people are doing very well. Local services is really the best bet, food, beer, or a trade. So it’s a good small business opportunity. Research would be key, before moving to Maine. Retail is very tough outside of tourist and holiday seasons. Mainers are typically hard working and trustworthy, so a production company is good. Heating said production company cuts into the bottom line. It’s the only thing that keeps us from having large businesses, the people are typically amazing. That said, if you move here because you like it, please remember to leave it the way you found it. We like things this way too. Maine, The way Life Should Be
I'm thinking the 3 acres in Maine would be perfect for a whiskey distillery or beer brewery. You could also process maple syrup. Do tours during summer. Have a little tasting room and bistro.
I live not too far from Elwood and I think the two car garage thing is an attempt to get families to move there. Most of the population is elderly. It's actually something people around Elwood have been talking about for years now.
Maine sounds good to me! It is a really cute quaint state. Those lighthouses, love them! I wonder what happens if you don’t make your business profitable in five years, besides that you’re broke!

The last place is my favorite Maine, and how hilarious it is, I would not have come up with the question, to ask for directions to find the crummiest town, that is awesome. 🏰🏞🏔⚓👦🏻👍🏻❣
Elwood is in a good spot. It's 10 minutes to Johnson Lake, an hour to Harlan County Reservoir, 20 minutes from the interstate, on 2 main highways. Curtis started their homestead program almost 20 years ago, a half hour west. 20 minutes south Arapahoe has free lots, then another 15 minutes west, Cambridge has a bunch of lots of various sizes. The requirements for square footage, garages, appraised values, etc, is to assure that the property taxes will be enough to pay off the bonds taken out to pay for surveys, engineering, and putting in streets and utilities.
The reason skeetown (Muskegon) is offering up free to businesses is that most people don't want to live there and if they already do, they need more opportunities. The Lakeshore is certainly beautiful and the industrial areas offered are near Lake Michigan. My hometown is about 30 mi from there and in between is Manistee national forest, pictured in many Pure Michigan ads. There's tons of recreation and boating, and Michigan has more inland lakes than any other state besides Minnesota. Skeetown might not be the best place to live but it's worth starting a strong business there and living a little outside of town in the boundless beauty of nature. Haha, yes Michigan
I live on state land in Vienna in a van, I poach deer and turkey all year round for food and u can hammer down a well that's only 10 feet deep to have endless clean water
During WWII all cars were required to be kept under a structure. This was to make it look like the town had already been evacuated prior to an air invasion. That was usually a garage but could be a carport. Many municipalities legislated that it be a garage for aesthetic reasons. So, amny towns & cities still have those laws on the books.

foundation because Tornados. These are tiny plots... I was thinking more along the lines of 30 acres with waterfront access
Mobile homes can be put on permanent foundations, in fact in Kansas you definitely want to have a permanent foundation because of the tornadoes. A permanent foundation is just a cement slab that you anchor the mobile home too. Much safer.
A mobile home in Tornado Alley. What could possibly go wrong?
I think Earthbag or Aerocrete dome housing might be good if it is legal, or possibly in a bermed Geodesic Dome form. I think any form of housing when bermed is prob safer in Tornado country..
JMHO. You'd want a Tornado Shelter anyway..
I think I'd build an unassuming house and then get to work handigging an underground lair/storm shelter.
You can have it if I lived in Kansas I'd build my house into the foundation not just on top of the foundation
It sounds like the Puritans are alive and well. Nope, not for me.
I'm from Brunswick. You got that right for sure...my taxes doubled a year ago.
Open a profitable business and get 3 acres? Ok start llc, ebay some books you got from garage sales. I made $1 profit! = free 3 acres! Woohoo

I hate the cold too. I am originally from up north and I just go back to visit relatives. I ❤ my home now in South East Texas
Camden, Maine: "If you don't mind the cold, and if you like seafood..." The five states with the highest overall tax burden are:
New York: 12.97%
Hawaii: 11.71% Maine: 10.84% Vermont: 10.77% Minnesota: 10.25%
I hope this helps to clarify why these states are giving away land.
Taxes could be an important factor. Are there any other factors that we should consider?

To combat the negative effect of inflation, it’s a good idea to diversify your portfolio across different asset classes, such as stocks, bonds, and real estate, since this can help protect your portfolio against inflation. I’ve heard testimonies of people accruing over $550k during this period
One way to save your stock portfolio against inflation is to invest in stocks of companies that are likely to perform well even in times of high inflation. There are actually a lot of ways to make high yields in a crisis, but such trades are best done under the supervision of an expert

My family is from Camden. It is beautiful!
Hello my fellow Mainer. I'm in York county but have lived in Maines small towns and cities my whole life. It IS beautiful here.
Property taxes high there?
Yes great narration. I considered Muskegon. It is beautiful. But in doing my environmental research before buying property I learned the west coast of MI has heavy particulate pollution in the air blowing across the lake from Chicago. I landed farther north and a bit inland. 45 to 50 min to TC. 25 to Cadillac. Hour to main freeway to downstate friends. Perfect. Wooded, hilly, and of course lots of rivers and lakes. Smoking deal too.
We used to camp in Muskegon every summer. Beautiful area to have a campground.
Briggs I agree that Maine is without a doubt a great state to live in
I'm only a minute in, but usually there are covenants attached to it like, "You must build a home worth at least x in x amount of time" or "You must be employed laying income tax", etc.
They're not offering free land they're trying to generate income through taxation
Well, you're gonna pay taxes regardless, so...

I looked into the Camden, Maine situation - It’s toxic land where a tannery was build years ago. Lots of toxic chemicals everywhere.

The reason skeetown (Muskegon) is offering up free to businesses is that most people don't want to live there and if they already do, they need more opportunities. The Lakeshore is certainly beautiful and the industrial areas offered are near Lake Michigan.
I lost my house in a divorce. I might just have to check one of these places out. I’m also a storm chaser so Kansas looks promising
In other words got divorce raped. Usual.
Well that free land in Marquette had houses until a tornado took them. Night-time tornado.
Good luck to you!
Divorced storm chaser? I just don't understand.
before my ex filed for divorce I burned down the hole fucking house..she was pissed.SFW
Where I live (WA), we had to put the manufactured home on a slab (permanent foundation) to get a real estate mortgage. Otherwise, it is Personal Property and titled as such and the loan was a PP loan even if you own the land. Does anyone know if/where they will give a mortgage on a manufactured home without first eliminating the PP title? That would be outstanding. Thanks
Just curious, would the taxes on personal property be less than the property taxes?
I don't exactly know how I ended up here - I started out watching Adam and the Ants videos. Anyway, great video! I think you're hilarious.
Adam and the Ants rocks and they have a ton of good songs
I am a poor man with a family I can use it for the future
A lot of hillbillies in Maine
0:38 Oklahoma Land Race, portrayed in the movie Far and Away. Among my greatest favorite.
One of my favorite movies Far and Away. Your intro made me think about that movie.
Love that movie so much that I bought my own copy. Mentioning Far and Away makes me want to watch it again when I get home tonight.
My Irish co-worker absolutely hates the movie. Don't know why. Maybe Tom didn't get the Irish accent right.
Good movie, underappreciated. We need more movies about the immigrant experience.
I subscribed. This guy is super fun to listen to! 👍🏻
I love small town Main Street too! ❤️
I absolutely love them.
@@WorldAccordingToBriggs: I just had dinner an hour ago at the Twisted Rail Tavern in Honesdale PA. ;)
hets boring after the novelty wears off.
Wow, free land? That's awesome! Really cool to see towns doing this.
_"two car garage"_
one for your car, the other for your tractor ... or mule
I'm sure the 2 car garage is to discourage mobile homes, sure you can build a garage for a mobile home, but more than likely you aren't going to.
Ours would have to be 4. One for my suv, one for the truck, one for the mule and the tractor, and one for the Harley's 😂😂😂
This was actually a pretty cool video with a very interesting list of places! I, honestly, am interested and will pursue building a retirement home in one of the last 3 places on this list, just as soon as I win the lottery....
