Doesn’t one continuity claim that Mind Flayers are mutated humans from the future? What if Illithids were actually created by cults experimenting with Aboleth genes and mucus years in the future? (Also, still waiting on that vid talking about the Elder Brains, now that you’re doing D&D videos again I’d love to see that...)
My headcanon is that the Illithid are what the Aboleths evolved into out of necessity. They have really pathetic land movement, and are at their best in the water. I think they evolved into a humanoid form to better traverse the land and skies (although I love the idea of Aboleths basically becoming space-whales) after civilizations wrecked the planet and left it devoid of the water that the Aboleths need. This to me explains the slimy film that covers every mind flayer, which is a kind of capacitor for their psionic abilities, as well as serving as magical resistance.
Slaad are the essence of chaos, Illithids are always Lawful, so I don't think the Illithids are what happens when a Slaad Tadpole takes over an Aboleth. I would be more favorable of the theory that an Illithid is the ultimate evolution of the Aboleth, or perhaps human, or perhaps some Aboleth/Human arcane hybrid. I mean, some drunk mage came up with Owlbears, right? Why not? Aboleth + Human = Illithid. Then, of course, their creations ran amok, as they always and invariably do, and proceed to consume the galaxy until it died out.

Maybe... the Aboleth evolve into the Mind Flayers? It's a long shot, but we're talking about possibly billions, if not trillions, of years of evolution.
I thought that same thing. But if the Aboleths are born with the memories of all their generations, and the Mind Flayers are basically their distant grandchildren, what if the Mind Flayers remember being Aboleths, even remember the specific LINEAGE of Aboleth they come from, and they know all this, which is why they are willing to ally with, basically, their ancestors? So while the Aboleths don't know what the Mind Flayers are or where they come from, the Mind Flayers DO know the Aboleths, and even know the Aboleths don't know, because they remember from when they were Aboleths. This would also mean that the Mind Flayers have a vested interest in the Aboleths surviving, as they know they must survive in order for the Mind Flayers to eventually come to be, such that if the Aboleths were somehow destroyed entirely, the Mind Flayers would cease to exist in a paradox.
@@SubduedRadical While most science fiction uses a time paradox in this way. If you were to acount for two timelines, no one could even cease to exist. As in timeline 1 mind flayers would survive and live until they would have gone back in time (we know this because they exist in timeline 2). Even if they were to die in our timeline (timeline 2) they have already been to the end of time and already survived in their timeline. (All theoretical nothing comfirmed just my view of it.)
I'm starting to fall more into this theory. Maybe sometime down the evolutionary line, the aboleth start to lose the the ability to be sustained by the slime, and they begin to experiment on how to survive without it. Becoming bipedal, brain-eating creatures could be what the best option is.
@Regular Slime Well, I mean it's not like we could prevent major human deaths without compromising our own cultural integrity, could we? Certain things have to take place in order for the Mind Flayers to be born, and in the case of evolution, that entails that a lot of specific aboleths have to die.
Your videos on Beholders inspired me to write my first successful campaign that survived more than one session, with the mind flayers video giving some inspiration for the sequel. This one is really inspiring me to make something new, something like Mass Effect of a looming primordial threat nobody has much knowledge about.

That was great. I loved the inclusion of the Illithid in the lore. I hope we get Dark Sun or Spelljammer setting someday. Both are way overdue for a comeback.
My favourite TH-cam series of all time finally continues! Great to see you back on the DnD videos. If this keeps up, I might become a patron if my financial situation allows it in a few months. Would be well worth it! One question at 10:20 Wouldn't this simply mean that as the species itself grows older, the longer the memory tentacles? Or are personal memories less dense or more nuanced requiring more space? Or does it lack an explanation because it wasn't though of?
Personal memories require more space, hence the older they get and the more life experience they accrue; the longer the brain stem gets. The reason racial (parent) memories are not as big, is because they are very compressed. In fact the aboleth needs to search within his memories and almost "relive" those memories in order to unlock them. It takes a while for an aboleth to recall specific old memories from his ancestors.
Thank you so much... Your videos, everything about them is just so amazing.. Inspiring. The music, your choice of wording.. I feel entranced whenever I watch them. You are a genius.
This video was so packed with information! Didn't even realize there was so much to know, excellent research. May I say though that for the subject matter I felt like the music choice was a bit... spa-like, less "incredibly powerful and extremely dangerous Eldritch monster"
Wow, this was an amazing video and as someone who’s been playing D&D for over 6 years I still learned things I didn’t know. It was very organized and easy to follow and another amazing video
Oh goodness, I didn't know time travel was canon in D&D. I suppose that either means that the Illithid will eventually win no matter what or that the canonical world of D&D is a parallel dimension to the one where they do win.
You can travel in time D&D, but the Gods usually prevent it from happening when it's attempted. So Illithid time travel might only be possible when the Gods are gone in the future.
Well yes. But the fact that the Illithid canonically exist in D&D means that the gods are gone in the future and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. Either that or time travel creates parallel universes.
@@barbecuedkoala1420 I'm not saying time travel is implausible in a world such as DnD. I'm saying that time travel carries with it a lot of implications, such as paradoxes and alternate timelines.
Nathan Anderson That's another paradox that I can't remember the proper name of. Imagine that you're walking around and an older version of you walks up to you and hands you a pot. You keep this pot for years and then travel back in time to give yourself the pot. Where did the pot come from?
You covered so much, but there is SO much more! Types of Aboleth and their personality differences, the return of Xxiphu, Aboleth gods that they dont really worship, their creation and the Blood Queen, how they claim to have created the Astral, their empires and downfall, that gods hunt them but they still persist.
I don't know how I didn't see any of these videos before. I'm going to watch ALL of the lore ones again and again, they already gave me so many ideas for campaigns, encounters, adventures... If you are still accepting suggestions, I would love to see an episode about the Shadow Dragons and Shadowfell in general
Woah, this was highly entertaining and I learned quite a bit about aboleths. Maybe I’ll make a campaign based off of them, thx a lot for the lore and keep it coming ^^
Could the Illithid (Apologies if I spelt that wrong) Mind Flayers be the final evolutionary point of the Aboleth? I mean I can't have genetic memory of what my race is to become in the future right?
A lot of old school D&D forums speculate that Mind Flayers are the creation of humanoids trying to become immortal so they experimented with Abaleths inside of Dark rituals and forbidden sciences.
Hmm you forgot that aboleth when killed reincarnate in the water plane. So aboleth has the ability to reproduce, so then they will endlessly continue to grow in, now that scary
Upon an aboleths death in the material plane their soul is transported to the plane of water where a new body is created and their soul placed inside they then can eventually find a way back to the material plane. So for all intents and purposes they are immortal and they can reproduce so eventually they will be the only thing left on the material plane.
I love the lore of Aboleths, but damn they're just so squishy. Even if they manage to knock everyone into the water, they're still incredibly weak based on the 5e CR table.
More aboleths and minions is the solution. I calculate encounters in my head and a lot of times I give the players curve balls. I just make sure they can win on a very slight margin. 1 death or so every few sessions or just dropped to zero. It makes the players feel like they are just barely getting through my dungeons though there is rarely a party wipe
Lamune Baba Well I’m soooo sorry that us casual gamers don’t what to deal with a possible TPK every encounter. And may I remind you that 5e has gotten more people into D&D than any previous edition.
Well you should feel sorry. :3 Keeping themselves safe from monsters far stronger than them should be a thing should it not? If you run into a situation where there is an enemy that can not be dealt with... RUN! I would say it makes a fair bit of sense that the thing is not too strong though. It was the boss in the past while everything was still weak. But adventurers of higher levels would probably be a lot stronger than what they would have to deal with before the gods. 20 level 1's would probably not have an easy time fighting them. :3
Caim Pact If you feel it’s too weak, beef it up. I do it all the time. And there are plenty of scenarios of having to run. I also plan on throwing a few to my players.
That is indeed the good part of the games. One can just change stuff more or less any way one wants to fit the purpose. If humans can have such differences in stats... why not the strange creatures you run into?

A ninth level spells stops time in a radius why wouldn’t a tenth level spell travel through it. That was my idea of time travel
Where did the pot come from?
absolutely fascinating stuff, please do more videos like these ones that really go in to the very obscure lore of lesser used monsters :)
I'm glad these are back
Well done! A fantastic, informative and interesting video!
Your lore helps me a lot. I’m a DM. Your lore helps me explain what the creature is doing or what the character could do.
What nerdy stuff, this was pure amazing content, keep up the good work!
Every campaign needs more aboleths. I am impressed with your knowledge of the lore.
EXCELLENT presentation! Very helpful. Thanks for creating and sharing.
so, what you are saying is that the most optimal humanoid translator for aboleth would be a barbershop quartet?
*rubbing hands together*
"Yyyes, my players will have much trouble with this creature."
Excellent overview and narration - awesome villains!
You covered so much, but there is SO much more!
Types of Aboleth and their personality differences, the return of Xxiphu, Aboleth gods that they dont really worship, their creation and the Blood Queen, how they claim to have created the Astral, their empires and downfall, that gods hunt them but they still persist.
i'm so glad that the D&D videos are back
I don't know how I didn't see any of these videos before. I'm going to watch ALL of the lore ones again and again, they already gave me so many ideas for campaigns, encounters, adventures...
If you are still accepting suggestions, I would love to see an episode about the Shadow Dragons and Shadowfell in general
I've just been binge watching your videos for 2 days
im planning to dm my first game next year and your vids are a massive help. im going to throw things at the players that they have never thought of
How I longed for your D&D lore videos! As a fellow DM, thanks yet again for the great inspiration!
Amazing episode man, Very well tailored
This made me remember "a night below" an old 2nd edition campaign...... so many memories
I love these videos pls make more
That was awesome and well written, thanks for sharing this !
I loved this. Great detailed lore. Let other pages rinse and repeat short reading the monster manual.
Woah, this was highly entertaining and I learned quite a bit about aboleths. Maybe I’ll make a campaign based off of them, thx a lot for the lore and keep it coming ^^
THERE IS NEVER TOO MUCH INFORMATION AND THAT SHIT WAS AMAZING
My favorite aberrations! Thank you for these!
loved it keep doing these LORE VIDEOS, best Aboleth Lore on youtube
Love these D&D vids! keep em coming :D Great work!
thank you for that lesson! I learned something new today about some awesome raises!
I will aways imagine Aboleths in maid dresses being humiliated by Asmodeus in their afterlives, one of the multiverse's true chess players.
oh my GOD u compiled so much information, well done
I love that extra lore at the end. And don't be sorry for being nerdy, we all are and all want to hear it.
Great video Rhexx!!!
I dig this scientific approach. Good work.
The Aboleth wouldn’t be the Illithid but the Elder Brains, which control the Illithid.
But do mindflayers have perfect memories of their race’s past?
Hmm you forgot that aboleth when killed reincarnate in the water plane. So aboleth has the ability to reproduce, so then they will endlessly continue to grow in, now that scary
exactly 😵🦑🐟 "they"(aboleth's) are innevitable...
Ok let get rid of the water plane
@@Frostedlyre yeah good luck with that ☺
carlos salazar can someone explain this in proper english please
Upon an aboleths death in the material plane their soul is transported to the plane of water where a new body is created and their soul placed inside they then can eventually find a way back to the material plane. So for all intents and purposes they are immortal and they can reproduce so eventually they will be the only thing left on the material plane.
I really enjoy your DnD videos! Keep it up
Thanks a lot my friend i was thinking on adding these to my great lore in my campaign, cheers
solid ending to this video good work dude
Great video . Hope i can see more of dnd here
I've been waiting for this video! :D
