This "performance" is the band mocking the demand from this show's producers that they play to a backing track. Maiden is one of those rare, truly talented bands that can actually nail a live performance - better even than the studio version. They are real musicians and take pride in that musicianship. Having to do a playback performance is like the ultimate insult - a lot of bands know they can't really pull off a live gig in tune, on beat, and on key, but Maiden definitely can, and do, night after night. Good on them.
There was nothing "live" about this performance... shows like this have bands play to backing tracks because it's cheaper and easier. Do you actually think that they can all play each other's parts, and multiple band members somehow miraculously sound exactly like Bruce? Please...😂😂😂

This was from 12 years wasted, a documentary about Iron Maiden. A British television show asked Maiden to appear and perform, which they agreed to do. The show insisted that Maiden lip sync the performance. Maiden protested, saying that they would not lip sync and would only do a live performance. Since both sides were at an impasse, the boys from Maiden decided to have a bit of fun. Producers from the show were pretty pissed off. Maiden's answer was "We told you, we only do live performances." I'm sure over the years I've forgotten some of the details, however, this is the basics behind this video.
Funny, I remember reading years ago a Metal Maniacs interview with Adrian about this performance, commenting that he was the only one that stuck to his part. He said he watched Top of the Pops as a kid, and everyone knew it was playback, but he was there to see the band, and the pros played the part. He didn't think it was right to deny the audience the chance to see their favorite band. He paused and made a comment about how, looking back, he thinks this might have been the beginning of the end with him and the band, shortly after the next album, he was no longer in Iron Maiden. Sad. I had looked for this performance for years after reading that article (from 1998, I believe), and this is my first time seeing it. Makes sense, now.
