This band could & did go through different singers at times, but without Gary there is no REO.......period. R.I.P. -- Gary Richrath......one hell of an amazing guitar player......

    • @rafaelsale6364
      @rafaelsale6364 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Yeah, but Reo never sounded that same without him. Gary rocking riffs and energy made that band great. Even when Cronin changed them to a power ballad band. Gary's searing guitar solos made Cronin's ballad songs worth listening to.

The origins of REO Speedwagon are almost as far apart from commercial REO as the old Fleetwood Mac blues band was from the commercial Fleetwood Mac. It really gives you a respect for the dues these guys paid to make it to the top.
You know they played shit holes and dives, and had major ups and downs on the way to the top. They are as "rock n' roll" as any band out there, despite the overshadowing of the 1980s power ballad fame.
These guys were ready to be sacked by their label by the time Hi Infidelity was finished. And just like that, boom, an entirely new chapter, leaving the thoughts of this R.E.O in the dust bin of history.
When you consider the era, and Gary Richrath's skill level compared against the other heavy hitters in rock guitar, he was easily as good as anyone out there. Almost has a Hendrix-like quality to him in this video.
Gary stayed true to his roots -- wielding a Les Paul and a 50-watt Marshall. He didn't sell out to a Boss pedal train and a solid state GK amp in the 80s. Gary was a purist, and simplicity was his genius.

      I caught that and am

      The thing is though,
Kevin Cronin wrote three of the
      eight songs on R.E.O. / T.W.O.
      and Terry Luttrell has no
      writing credits on the album.
      I'm wondering if it's possible
that they did record a second
      album with Terry Luttrell and
the label rejected it and had
them go back and do it again.
      Perhaps that would be one
factor that led to Terry's exit ???

1st Lp era, the vocalist lacks all the key ingredients. I'm actually surprised they got signed by Clive Davis at this time as this is just mediocre bar band level stuff...but they got better shortly after this.

Kevin Cronin didn't add anything positive to this band.

REO to me was Gary or Gary and Kevin. All Kevin, is Kevin, not REO. Just because Gary was drinking and Kevin couldn't work with him is no excuse for Kevin not realizing why Gary was drinking. Ya, those ballads are nice Kevin and I'm sure the ladies liked them as well as the record guys, but it's not rock you wussy.

@@chuckHart70 Yes, I agree, especially after leaving the band. As a young boy, from the Midwest, I think a learned a long time ago that Gary had a lot of Indian heritage which I thought was cool especially on Golden Country. Somebody needed to keep him away from the booze. I'd have been all in on working out and cannabis. Alcohol is so hard of a drug, you don't realize it till you're old.

Cronin changed the bands income 100 fold. Most people do not know this version. Great guitar but vocals suck imo

Terry was the best. I never bought another REO album after Terry, really dislike Cronin's voice. His whole act is so scripted with little originality or creativity.

@@johnstrika9170 They were still a middle of the road club band even with Kevin. The only difference is that before Kevin, the band stayed true to their original sound. When Kevin joined for the second time, he gave them a more pop sound. Then he turned REO into a power ballad band with the hi infidelity album. He made them commercially successful, but sacrificed the band's identity for it.

I think Bud's trying to say, Hi Infidelity was a 10x platinum ($$$) "sellout", and provided REO with the success they had been seeking all along. Kevin's weepy power ballads combined with Gary's overdriven rock and roll guitar formed a unique sound ushering in the power ballad and hair metal of the 80s.

I think Allan, Neal, Greg and Bruce were great players. Don't get me wrong, in my opinion Gary was the main attraction and inspiration that made REO Speedwagon along with those 4 players. Allan, Neal, Greg and Bruce are great at what they did, and I love to watch them all play in tune.

      Have you even listened to
      R.E.O. / T.W.O. (1972), R.E.O. (1976),
      LIVE - YOU GET WHAT
      YOU PLAY FOR (1977),
      YOU CAN TUNE A PIANO,
BUT YOU CAN'T TUNA FISH (1978)
      or NINE LIVES (1979) ???
      There are two undeniable facts.
      1) Without Kevin Cronin,
      REO Speedwagon would not
even made it into the 80s.
      2) You're a idiot ..... Period.
