  • Check Out More Theories: • MY BEST THEORIES Kubo and the Two Strings is Laika’s best, alongside Coraline and ParaNorman. It has a wonderful ending, and my theory here, which I’m FINALLY releasing, revolves around the idea that the Eerie Sisters and the Moon King are only half of the movie’s story… And the whole OTHER side of this film… The lighter side… The SUNNY side… Is a metaphor that reveals a whole lot about Kubo, his parents, and YES… Even the film Coraline! A shared universe begins…

    I'd like to think that the sisters are born out of magic, just like how the moon king is. The moon king is most likely Tsukuyomi who is the moon God in Shintoism. He was born from the right eye of Izanagi, the creator which is probably why eyes were such a great deal in this movie. I also don't think there would be any reason to bring the moon king and the sun queen together because the sun queen would be his sister, Amaterasu. The two are in a feud due to Tsukuyomi killing Uke Mochi, the goddess of food, due to the fact that he didn't like how she created food, such as fish and rice fields. It was really shallow of him to do that so the two got into a feud and that's why night and day could never be together.
    If the movie is based off these myths then I'm pretty sure Tsukuyomi either birthed them from stars or had a good time with a goddess. The heavy use of sun motifs could be because Amaterasu is a highly regarded goddess.
    I suggest you read up on cultural aspects when coming up with theories about the family tree of Kubo because mythology is usually straightforward and doesn't need much thinking about.
    Lastly, it isn't a guitar. It's a shamisen.
    Keep up the good work!

    • @ThePoetUnderTheFall
      @ThePoetUnderTheFall 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Well it must have been a shock to find out all the food from the goddess was created via vomiting out the food, which was kept a secret so I'm guessing he got mad because of that and that's why he killed her.

      Yes, I think this is the most likely theory. I also think that the reason Kubo can use magic is because of his heritage, as his mother is the daughter of the Moon King. Theorizor said the instrument is a powerful object, but remember, in the movie, the “monkey” said that it was Kubo that was powerful.

    Interesting. So basically the older lady from the beginning is the Sun Queen so to say? I think she knows a lot more then she says. Also did you ever realize that the mom goes into a sort of trance like state when it’s daylight? Maybe she is the moon queen some how? Or is the heirs ether way the strongest of the family, obviously. The grandfather (moon king) wanted her daughter back because as the sisters said “were stronger together” so maybe he wasn’t after just kubos eye but kubo himself because he is a product of both moon and sun being more powerful then himself and his 3 daughters combined. In the beginning kubos mother says herself & the beetle were “rivals” so to speak almost forbidden, maybe because they were literally opposite. Moon & sun. Or maybe you said all of this already in the video and I was to excited to pay attention to detail lol. I feel like this particular theory is easy to over think just because all of the information is just at our fingertips. It is a good one though. Nice video!

      Your onto something and I can confirm because Husband (Shannon Tindle) created film and story. It’s partly inspired by my childhood. My mother had dementia at young age and suffered from the sun downers phenomenon. Since she’s a Moon princess her power and mind work clearly at night and suffers in the daylight hours. It’s fun that folks put so much thought into this film!!! All the Sun stuff is not there. This was all 4 years ago so I’m sure everyone has moved onto new mysteries! Thanks for supporting the film!

      Also consider this cup of Tea :
      She refers to her "dead husband" only metaphorically speaking - to be dead - and she mentions she cant get him to shut up, more likely a nod to his nature and personality.
      When the villagers visit the grave sight to see their deceased loved ones, she's the *only* one who doesnt get hers shown on screen, we dont see her visiting her husband, and we dont get to see his spirit - So it's more likely, that she could indeed be referring to the Moon King, as her husband, who she VERY much is aware is still alive, but just sends a lantern out as a nod to her once beloved relationship that is now ruined by him an his need for more power and family Vendettas, and in her metaphoric means- he's technically dead, the Husband she once knew

    This makes sense especially with the symbolism
    Lakia seems to take inspiration from mythology in this film;
    The Greek God Apollo is a God of light and music (especially fond on the lyre a harp thing) which in this case is Kubo's three stringed instrument.
    Also the Egyptian god Ra is a sun god who has sacred symbols including a scarab beetle
    Just some food for thought or a possible add on to the theory.

    Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but I will. In the scene when Kubo is out too late and his aunts find him and his mother comes to fight them. The scene is short but as Kubo's is flown away from his mother, you see her and her sisters unleash their full power.
    The sisters magic is blue similar to the Moon and matches their Fathers blue light. But, Kubo's mother her magic is a bright gold compared to the sisters.
    Even Kubo's magic is gold. If the theory is true that the Moon King married and produced offspring with the Sun Queen, it would make sense. Especially if the queen is more powerful than the king.
    The sisters in film do say that Kubo's mother was strong and the most powerful of the three, probably inheriting more of their mother's power while the twins got their father's powers.
    If this is true, I see the dynamic of the Moon king and Sun queen similar to that of Ponyos parents. Ponyos father is powerful and I think a wizard who helps keep the ocean in balance, but not as powerful as his wife Ponyos mother who is a goddess.

    Wait, so this might be a stretch, and it comes like a year late, but if we’re going to connect the Laika universe, consider this: in Coraline, she seems safe in her world during the day, and the nefarious events of the story all take place in the evening. If we’re considering the Beldam to be some sort of Moon Queen, could that explain why she doesn’t attack during the day and relies on the Cat’s powers/the Otherworld’s powers to even spy on Coraline? And/or, if Kubo is descended from the sun and moon and thus has a special protection against darkness, could Coraline be one of his descendants, which explains why Coraline of all the four children the Beldam attacked was able to defeat her?

      Good theory but then Kubo was based off a Japanese Myth , so it wouldn't really make sense for Kubo and Coraline to be related.

    I was wondering about this but do you think the villagers are just nice to the seemingly family-less street grandma because they know who she is? I know Japan is supposed to be based in politeness and reverence for elders but maybe if they remind a human-bound spirit of their origins they will die or lose some mysticism?
    After the Moon King becomes human-bound no one in the village goes to tell him who he is. They just go along with him being a new addition to the village. So if the same thing had happened to the Sun goddess, maybe like you suggested she used her power to save Kubo's parents essences should they die in the future and create the "Life Shamisen".
    She ends up in the village not know who she is but the villagers know and make sure she is alright. Kubo doesn't interact with anyone but her despite all of the children in the village like it is on purpose.
    idk. I'll think about it more but glad to see you were able to get back to this one

    Two quick things.
    First) This is just meant as an FYI, but it isn't a guitar, it's a Samisen/Shamisen (not sure on the spelling), a trditional Japanese String Instrument.
    Second) To my understanding, it's not the instrument itself that holds the power, but Kubo and his mother, and the instrument is simply a conduit for the power. Remember that, near the beginning of the movie, Kubo's Mother has a nightmare and the paper starts moving on its own. And we've seen on a few other occasions that Kubo's mother is capable of using her power with out playing the instrument. Kubo's likely only needs the instrument due to being (as far as we're aware due to what's said in the movie) Half-Mortal.

    I always imagined that there could have been a sun king, but that Kameyo is the sun queen? wow, that made my mind explode. although it doesn't sound so crazy ... Ancient cultures love the idea of duality XD, it occurs to me that, as you mentioned, Raiden (moon king) and the sun queen could have a relationship (the three sisters being born) and that have been confronted for many reasons (perhaps the ambition of the moon king for wanting more power than is due to him) ending in the sacrifice of the sun queen to protect humans. that would explain the hatred and disgust that the moon king has to the beings of the earth.
    /// And that I still haven't made any comments about what the sun queen might have been Hanzo's mother, oh boy ~~~

    I noticed something quite odd at 4:36. If you look in beetween the two bug trees, you can see what seems to be a blue, transparent body. What if THIS is the moon queen, seeing what happend after her husband's defeat. Idk just a small theory.

    Remember how you said how death works in corpse bride and paranorman? Well, in coraline the 3 ghost kids died by getting their eyes gouged out, and had there souls stolen, and they died needing their eyes back, needing to escape, and needing to go back to their mothers. They died suddenly and with unfinished business and couldn't move on, they stayed TRAPPED ad ghosts and when coraline got their eyes back, helped them escape, and let them go see their mothers, they could finally move on to heaven with their souls set free as Angels! Just like what happens in corpse bride an paranorman!

    Maybe how the liaka universe kolides is first comes Kubo and destroys the moon king. The moon queen/ beldemn finds out and gets mad and finishes what the moon king started then box trolls comes second because it's in the time of 1800s then Coraline and paronorman is in the same timline because in both movies you can see them using flip phones........OMG......... OH MY GOD!!!!!!! So if you remember in theorizers last Coraline video he said " the real question is, is Coraline safe?............no......she isn't because she's going to become the next beldemn" so this means Kubo has to fight Coraline next because she's the next moon queen/beldemn!!!!!!!!!

    I always thought that this being a film rooted and inspired by Japanese folklore, that the “sun goddess” was Amaterasu, the actual sun goddess in Shinto mythology, and “the moon king” was Tsukuyomi.

  • @YumegakaMurakumo
    @YumegakaMurakumo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The elderly woman could very well be a human incarnation of the goddess Amaterasu and the grandfather of course is Tsukuyomi AKA the moon king. The fact he is depicted as old instead of a young man and she also is very old and acts as Kubo's surrogate grandmother is very interesting. And if this theory is correct, it spins the Kojiki right on its head as Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi were brother and sister and were not romantically involved and had children together whatsoever. But I thought this too watching this movie of the grandmotherly lady being a possible incarnation of the sun goddess herself.
    The gods of ancient times had many incarnations especially in Hinduism so I wouldn't put it past the writers in developing the character as so without blatantly saying it in the film.
    I'd never have drawn correlations to Coraline and Kubo. This is pretty cool. Hoping we get a 2nd film of each!💜😁

    This should tie in with the Mort Theory, as you said that in DreamWorks the moon is symbolizing unification of the Sky Gods, one of the Sky Gods is probably this Moon King who should be referred to as a God, and the fact that intelligent animals are involved in this film makes me rethink that the Twisted Sisters are suppressing Hanzo in his spiritual Kabuto beetle avatar.

    I don't think the old woman is Hanso mother but mother of kubos mother the moon family as she is herself is wearing blue. As she knows kubo more than he knows himself. What if the old woman was transformed like the moon king. Is it possible that Hanso mother or could be cursed just like the beldam.
