    I recently bought this bike (2x9 version) and I'm very pleased so far. It's sooo much faster than my ancient old 26" MTB. The weight without any equipment is around 13.5kg according to my measurements, so it's quite light for a bike of this type. I would say this is ideal for someone mostly going on asphalt and paved roads but also regularly on dirt paths or gravel roads (not talking paths with rocks and roots).

    I spent most of my time on paved roads and was considering this. I wouldn't mind going through some trails every now and then, but I'm not crazy with it. Looks way better than the bikes I'd been using all my life to do it. Think I'll go for this one.

    I just ordered the 2022 version. (I'm in Taiwan so it's only available here for now) it comes only in a black finish and has the 2x9 shifting configuration (I prefer this for the reasons mentioned in this review). I'll be on paved roads about 90% of the time while hitting a few bumps on the backwater roads.

    I bought one of these end of last year, was a move up from a GT Transeo Sport. This is a marked improvement and very nice bike to ride, I regularly do 40-50 miles on it on various terrains mainly road and path but also through woodland and parks and it handles very well. very smooth gearing and moving from mechanical disc to hydraulic is definitely a step up. I'm 6'2" and got the larger frame which is perfectly sized, The XL frame would be best suited to someone 6'4" and upwards. All that and it looks nice as well.

    Bought one two months ago. This guy is spot on with his assessment. It is a bike for gentler cycling absolutely not for mountain biking. Good for distance, roads and hills and light gravel and dirt paths. I also have a Scott MTB rigid which is much more manoeuvrable with wider tyres and faster gearing. Two totally different rides. I prefer my Scott rigid frame. Itvsoaks up the road better and is great off road too.

    Just got one in Scotland. I like it, it flies well on the roads. My only tiny criticism would be the handle bars are quite wide, so for busy city roads you're slowing traffic down as you're a bit wide lol. I might just cut off a few cm's on either side if I can be arsed. The shop let me try out a medium and a large one. I'm 5'8 (176cm) - leg length 29" (73cm) and the large size fitted me better. I was a bit cramped on the medium.

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is always easier to cut handlebars than to add width so most companies seem to error towards offering wide handlebars.

    Super helpful, thanks. For someone looking to spend say 75% of their time on paved roads/paths and 25% on moderate mountain bike trails, which model by Giant do you recommend (if any)? Open to other brands if there's something more relevant, but I do like Giant. Also I understand this 75/25 breakdown is tough to choose one bike for. Thanks for any info

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Glad it was helpful! If you can track one down, a Talon with 29" wheels would probably suit you well. Talons are still excellent bikes for daily street use and with using it 25% of the time on trails I think a mountain bike will be the best options.

    • @yengsabio5315
      @yengsabio5315 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with Bike Bros. I will also suggest that you go with a Giant Talon.
      I have a Talon 2 (2017), medium, 27.5. It has 2x9 drivetrain. It's a very utilitarian bike for my needs (e.g., daily commute, trail biking, weekend long distance biking).
      Thanks to the 2x9 drivetrain, I can easily tackle various biking conditions. Fast enough on flats. Climbs easily on ascends.
      I only need to replace the Maxxis Ikon (default) tires with something gripier when trailing.
      I hope you find your best bike as soonest! And if you already have it, I wish you all the joy of biking! Lots'a love, cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines! #KeepBiking

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop

      Hi, I would recommend a mountain bike hardtail for what you describe. A mountain bike will handle street riding much better than a hybrid will handle roots and rocks. If you can track one down, something like the Giant Talon 1 would be a good option being one of the lightest and best equipped mountain bikes in that price range.

    Hi! Thanks for this review. I think the Roam would suit me for most of my riding (road and packed/light gravel) but I was wondering if the bike could be upgraded to work on loser/rougher gravel paths, too. Maybe you could give me some answers on the following questions?
    1. How much does the frame weigh? (just out of curiosity)
    2. Could you put bigger tires (e.g. 2.4") on the bike? And if so, would any components need to be exchanged?
    3. Is it possible to put on a bigger (e.g.100mm) fork?

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, no idea of frame weight. No, tire size is limited by space between the tire and frame/fork arch so you can probably only get away with tire size increase of a few mm safely. Yes, a bigger travel fork could be used. BUT: at the end of those changes what you essentially have done is made a Talon 29 with a not-so-good geometry at a higher cost

      Well, the fat tires is part of it, but the frame doesn't have space for them. Then there's the suspension: quite short, not sophisticated in its control and very flexible thanks to the thinness. Geometry: quite steep making the bike less stable than a mountain bike. Then there's the tubing diameter, wall thickness and reinforcement- not stiff enough or durable enough for mountain biking. The bikes even have different durability and stiffness standards they're manufactured to meet.

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heksogen4788 it could be Novatel or Formula. I don't know of any brand that divulges which hub manufacturer they deal with and it could be a case where Giant makes the hub but gets the freehub from a different supplier.

    • @heksogen4788
      @heksogen4788 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BikeBrosBikeShop Problem with formula hubs is that there's no spare parts for them. I have a friend who bought Roam disc in 2015, and recently he wanted me to service the hub. To my dismay you can't buy bearing cups for these, nor i havent found any cones. Basically the whole freehub has to be thrown off, but because the selection of suitable freehubs is low or nonexistent i've opted to changing his whole hub to a sealed bearing hub. Now it's a matter of few dollars to change the worn bearing... This is why im asking. The manufacturers cheap out on hubs, and these unsealed hubs can get rusty very easily, just by one trip during a rain. Mix a user who will not service and disassemble these hubs at least once a year, coupled with lack of spare parts and you get a disaster...

    The big flaw with this bike is that it’s crankset, hubs and bottom bracket aren’t shimano, whereas the Trek DS3 has it all

      I love getting as many Shimano parts on a bike too. But there is a 25% increase in price for the DS3 in Canada and I don't think the price warrants the extra money.

      I'm glad to hear the grips worked for you. My comments reflect the number of times we see these types of grips that have started to slide in or out or able to turn. Often a result of a minor accident that jams dirt into the end of the grip that causes the issue to start.

      Bob, absolutely true. At least in our case, the bias is obvious and we don't hide the fact that this is a store selling this product. I believe this is more honest to the consumer than many of the review sites or media sources that claim to offer honest reviews yet behind the scenes they are compelled to not offend advertisers or potential advertisers. And I wouldn't be surprised to hear the behind the scenes relationships between brands and media (in some cases at least) is resulting in strong bias.

Derailleur is misaligned.Since the rear wheel comes assembled I would have expected better.Assembly instructions poorly written, but that was not unexpected...just annoying.I just had the bike checked at a shop and was told that I should contact the seller about getting a whole rear wheel assembly with cartridge. (The bike shop could not do anything to help me).Not a good experience with this bike, so lesson learned.Added 3 stars for excellent customer serviceUpdate Sept 8 2020Just received a complete replacement wheel for free.
